Be ready: You're paying for the location, not the room. The biggest highlight isn't the hotel itself- it's the location. The ocean views are absolutely stunning, and the property has several beautiful viewpoints where you can sit with a coffee, take a walk, and simply enjoy the scenery. Waking up here and taking a morning stroll before continuing our drive was one of my favorite parts of the trip. We booked one of the more affordable rooms since we arrived late in the evening and left early the next morning. The room was clean but very basic. The AC was definitely older, and the room itself felt a bit dated. Since we only needed a place to sleep after a long day on the road, it worked perfectly for us. If you're planning to stay longer than one night, I'd definitely recommend spending a little more for a room with an ocean view. Just don't expect luxury accommodations, you are really paying for the incredible location. The only part we didn't enjoy was breakfast. We purchased it on-site, and unfortunately, it was very disappointing. That was probably the weakest part of our stay. Overall, this is a place I'd recommend because of the views, the peaceful atmosphere, and the experience of waking up on the Big Sur coast. It's simple, relaxed, and a wonderful stop along one of California's most beautiful drives. P.S. Cell service is extremely limited here, and we also weren't able to get Wi-Fi in our room. I love coming to Ragged Point. It has the most amazing views and is away from everything, which kind of makes it a hidden gem although many people know about it now. The rooms are spacious although they're older. This is a resort so it has a restaurant, coffee shop, grocery store and gift shop. This makes it convenient for you because everything is far away. On the weekends I stayed there, they had a wonderful barbecue on the lawn, along with live music. I love all of that, and the barbecue was pretty good. There is a very steep hiking trail to a secluded beach below the bluff. I decided to go down the trail and found it super sketchy and slippery. I don't know if it was worse going down or going up. Either way, it is very hard to do, and I won't do it again. However, it was worth it to get to the hidden beach with a small waterfall to the side and no one around. Other people I saw attempted it, but turned back around at a certain point. All and all, I will always return to Ragged Point! read more

What a unique resort on Big Sur! We spent a few days here exploring the property & area around Cambria. No WiFi or cell service while on the property, but it was not a negative to be unplugged for a bit. Beautiful views from room, fireplace & deep tub was bonus (jacuzzi tub not working). The rooms were charming but could use a good cleaning - they allow pets & our room did have pet smell. Beautiful sunsets & lots of spots to enjoy the resort & garden. Ants. Limited hours, lots of amenities closed in peak season. The grounds are gorgeous. The restaurant is amazing (reviewed separately), the host was kind and informational... though, as he was giving his run down of all the things we needed to know as guests, it was quickly apparent that he was pretty much running the show with a skeleton staff. The general store "could be open if you need it" and he'd be the one to do it, but only takes cash. The snack bar: closed. The room. Double beds, who has those anymore? They were pretty tight for 4 adults, one had to sleep on the ground (brought a sleeping pad just in case for this reason). We were told they did not have rollaway beds, but as we were walking back to our room the next morning to leave, we saw they had at least 2? Not sure why that was kept from us. The bathroom in the room needs to be updated badly. Sitting on the toilet you notice ants wandering around on the floor; not one, but many. You pay for the views, I guess. From the room the view was great, and really makes up for 2 of the 3 stars, and the 3rd is the amazing iced oat milk latte I got at the cafe on the day we left. The girl at the cafe was very sweet, and the coffee hit the spot. Would stay here again, but I'm hoping maybe some updates can be done or maybe at the very least some pest control. read more

I absolutely adored our time here. We came right before Highway 1 reopened so we experienced a quieter Ragged Inn than probably exists now. First off, get your calls and emails done before you get here. You will have very spotty wifi and zero cellular service. Frankly, I rather loved that. It was so nice to be forced to disconnect. I laughed out loud watching my teenage son discover his phone no longer worked. The view is spectacular and stretches on forever. There really is no bad room view wise. There is a fire pit, a coffee shop, a nice restaurant and a very, VERY steep hike than I only recommend to those planning to be careful. Go at low tide or the beach disappears. Bring a book and enjoy the quiet. I'll review the restaurant separately, but it is great to have this on site so you aren't driving back to Cambria to eat out. read more

If you want gorgeous secluded views in a remote off grid area this is for you. A friend recommended this location after seeing it off the highway. Hotel: It's not far from Hearst Castle or San Simeon. I was informed that it is the unofficial entrance for Big Sur. Big property with gorgeous views of the ocean. We booked our reservation online. Around 3:00pm the same day I received a call from an unknown number. They left a voicemail stating that if I didn't update my CC within 3 hours my reservation would be given away. I quickly called back and sorted it out. I arrived at the hotel a little after 7:00pm. Checked in at the front desk. I was given 2 keys along with 2 parking passes. Oh and be advised, there is LITTLE TO NO CELL SERVICE OR WIFI. I went upstairs to the room, it was pretty cute. We had to jiggle the lock for the balcony. The curtain for the window wasn't secured properly and fell on my friend. The shower turns on by itself. Oh and while being a pet friendly hotel sounds like a plus. Be advised the walls are paper thin. You will hear every bark and scratch throughout the night. Food / Gas: We went to the restaurant to get some food. We waited about 20 min to speak with someone. By then we decided to order the food to go. I ordered mushroom soup and a ham & cheese croissant. Only thing I can say is don't order the mushroom soup. Disgusting dishwater looking substance. We went to the gas station they have onsite to see if there were any snacks. It's a limited selection and cash only. while it sound like only negatives, I will say the views are breathtaking. The property itself is gorgeous. Outdoor benches and seating to enjoy the views. I read that there are also firepits. I didn't partake in it but it's nice to know. read more

I just did two years of cancer and my husband and I booked a room at ragged point to celebrate... And it was also my birthday. We paid quite a steep price for the room for two nights, but it was a very special occasion for us. We didn't expect nor want to get special treatment of any sort during our stay .... we just two day getaway.. When we booked our room weeks earlier we requested a room w 2 beds in it in a quiet building . He assured he had that available ... and we were told there are no big parties or anything at the inn on the weekends so it should be very nice and quiet . . When we we given a small room with one bed different area. we came back to the office and asked to be put in the two beds room that we requested. He said nothing was available he'd be super nice and throw in a rollaway bed but "for free" he would put a rollaway in the room... And he said we are very lucky to get the for free?!??. We were paying $370 a night for two beds and we got one bed and a rollaway. And the man ( Chris) at the front desk was very rude to us and did this in front of other customers waiting to check in. He then left the office and left everybody in there to go get a rollaway and shove it in that room. He said they're just very comfortable beds ..they're not ... Anything on wheels that you have to open and lay down is a rollawayis to us! He just told me to come see the manager the next day, but there were no rooms. . I saw the manager Nancy the next day and she was much kinder but had no solution .. all rooms were taken. . And we were not staying there to spend our days arguing in the office... I truly needed to drive up Hwy 1 for the day and celebrate being in remission. She did give me a $ monetary adjustment when we checked out. but we were in a tight room with a rollaway and not able to even use the fireplace because you couldn't get to it with a rollaway in it The man's attitude to us was applorable. We are 74 years old and there was zero respect given to us regardless of age. Others in the office in line Behind Us to said they would give us our room if they had one with two beds and they were blown away by how he treated us. And ragged point in which is called a resort is in no way a resort these days. Rooms are in need of repair...carpet in room filthy , the lawn not watered and dry... There was a party at the premises that night and loud music played. . we had kids riding motorbikes riding up and down the corridor in front of our room, there is construction on the property of a pond going on during the day. There is absolutely no phone service or Wi-Fi. They say you can use the phone in their office, but their office is closed all night. I have no idea what you were to do in an emergency. What they have going for them is a stunning location and the sweetest girl who works in the coffee shop in the morning named Olivia. Avoid Chris at the front desk if it all possible... And don't trust what he tells you on the phone. He does a bait and switch on you and you're stuck cause there are no other hotels nearby. And ragged point needs to take the word resort off their title until they make major improvements in the rooms and the personnel. read more

Our second stay at Ragged Point Inn was even more magical than our first. It's been about 15 or more years and all the things we loved here are the same, plus it's only gotten better. Our ocean front room was clean and fine for my hubby, our teen and me. I'm sure she would have preferred her own room but we barely spent any time there. We walked the grounds, photographed the view, relaxed and chilled in the incredible Big Sur air. Weather was perfect. Food at the restaurant was great! I enjoyed both breakfast (great avocado toast) and dinner. The koi in the pond are so friendly and went nuts for a bit of hand-fed bread! The views are exquisite - one could never tire of those cliff views. The gardens are lovely with hummingbirds galore. And kitties! Our teen was like a young girl again, running and playing with all the resort cats from sunrise to sunset. I can't wait to come back. To the locals and maybe people looking to go here as well outside of the area-- the customer service here is horrendous with an immense lack of communication and care for their clients. You can apparently lose your room at a moments notice depending on their mood and if they remember to communicate. I had an understanding that they wanted locals to stay as well as foreigners, and that dogs were welcome. My stay made me question that as well as the competency of the staff and the business. I paid ahead an ocean view dog friendly room and Nancy had helped me get the breakfast included winter special. I was wanting my 13yo small dog to go so I had one pet and also have a service dog. This was for my birthday and I was excited to go. I told her then and three other times that I am interested in buying another night in the room but needed to make sure my partner wanted to do that as well and they were busy working so I was having to wait and wanted to make sure there wasn't a cutoff time. She and the other front office ladies never specified a cutoff time that I should pay for the room and said it was no problem we could let them know later the same day. When I got there, alone, on my birthday, with my service dog, I was greeted in such a cold manner despite me coming in friendly and excited for the stay. They rushed me through the checking in process and commented grumpily about my ADA Service Dog, and instead of asking what questions they are legally allowed to ask me about my service animal, they made me feel discriminated with rude gestures and comments acting like they knew all the alerts and tasks an ADA service dog will make to their specific owner with a disability the person /should not have to address, talk about, or feel the need to defend/. It did not stop there. I went to a nice birthday dinner in Cambria and my partner agreed to another night. I went in with him to the front office after dinner and told her we were ready to purchase and finalize the second night. She tells me they sold the room 20min ago and we would have to stay somewhere else. I'm at this point shocked and confused why there was no communication. I am not sure if it was discrimination on my age but she also said "well they are paying for 2 dogs and /you/ have a service dog so you're only paying for one dog" Visibly SHRUGS). At this point that's blatant discrimination but it's my birthday and all I had been trying to do was be nice to them. I literally do not understand the hostility besides it being discrimination and lack of good customer service skills and communication. After MUCH back and forth she finds another room that we will then have to move to the next day. ((In the middle of this she exclaims that she needs to call another person to let them know they could not stay in their room tomorrow and called and left a message for them at 9pm (who does this??)) and I took a mental note how she couldn't even call me to communicate about my room but had time to throw a fit in front of us and call a customer about theirs. This was INSANE. Oh it doesn't stop there. The next morning I wake up trying to make this a new day and a good trip that we could still salvage besides the fireplace clicking loudly all night, and I go to the restaurant to get breakfast and the staff asked for my breakfast voucher. I never received or was told about a voucher. I then had to have a waitress walk me to the front office and without looking up the woman tells me "no she does not get one!" At this point I'm like what is going on here we've paid a lot of money and she looks up and says "oh sorry I didn't see it was you" and then helps me get a breakfast voucher. We then moved to the other room in the afternoon and had a quiet stay in the smaller garden room for the rest of the time. They waived my pet fee for the next one night, but honestly for ruining a birthday and doing this to a local who was trying to support another local business, I will be telling friends and family about this experience. *Discrimination against a person using a service dog who is trained to perform tasks to assist with the persons disability and question them even when the dog was under control and doing its job, no disruptive behavior and with me at all times, and favor someone without a service dog and treat me differently, is a HUGE reason why I have made this one star so others who have actual service dogs can be made aware of this experience and a caution for the upper management to swiftly find a resolution for this illegal behavior from their staff. The views are great, the rooms are nice, I felt like the grounds were pet friendly, and the customer service is discriminatory, unorganized, dishonest, lacks communication and professionalism and needs to be reviewed and managed. Proceed with caution, one night stay might be the way to go. Really was hoping for a better stay than the one I experienced. read more

Finally went back for my husband's birthday. This place is so calming, but if you're looking for a lot to do, there isn't anything. They have a cute little gift shop, coffee, shop, and market. Some of the places were cash only. Gasoline was seven dollars plus a gallon but I guess it's because of where it's located. I asked for second story bedroom king size, and it was perfect. Left the door open a little bit so we could hear the waves at night. We took a walk around the grounds and bought a bottle of wine at the market along with a few crackers and sat down and relaxed. The bedroom is spacious and it has a fireplace. Our bathroom had two sinks, which was nice. I noted on there survey sheet that they needed some grab bars in the shower and also some towel bars. Coffee and tea are provided, and the coffee was pretty good. They also have a TV and you can sit out on the deck in some comfortable chairs just staring at the ocean. read more

What an amazing experience! This is definitely going to become an annual destination for us. First off, they are incredibly dog-friendly--truly dog-friendly. It's so easy to spend the day here with your furry friends. There's plenty of space to walk them around, and they're even welcome on the outdoor patio of the restaurant. Now, let's talk about the food. Everything we tried was fantastic, but the coffee bar and dinner menu were definite standouts. We also indulged in some amazing cake that was the perfect treat. As for the rooms, they were spacious with large patios that were perfect for relaxing and enjoying the day. The property itself has so much to offer. Not only were the views stunning, but between the restaurant with three separate menus, the coffee bar, a snack bar (closed during our visit), a store, and a gift shop, there was plenty to explore. Positives: Beautiful Location. Grounds are lovely with an arbor for weddings, fire pit, gift shop (also check in) restaurant with very good food all three breakfasts and dinners. Staff in restaurant super nice and accommodating. We reserved a ground floor room no second story in our building. Liked the swing chair outside our patio of room #26 to watch the sunset. Good to have a heater/fan in the bathroom with bath/shower and toilet. Extra sink outside the bathroom. The bedroom/sitting room is heated up by an electric fireplace. The mini fridge in cabinet was very large! Also was a microwave and Kuerig coffee,tea,hit cocoa system. Christiana in the gift store was super friendly. Roberto our waiter in the restaurant was exceptional. Negatives: Room #26 mattress sucked! Our friend's room #29 had a medium Firm mattress which was more than acceptable. I do prefer a soft mattress, but this one even I sunk down way too much and I weigh 118 lbs. Unacceptable mattress. Needs to be replaced immediately. My poor husband weighs 170 so you can imagine what it was like for him. He doesn't like to complain . I should have the second day. There's a very large textured window next to the exit door that lets the outside lights shine in. No curtain or blinds to cover it with. The fireplace which is a nice change took a really long time to warm the room up, flames were whimpy even set to the highest. Our friend's room #29 was not. The pillows are all Polly fill . Good thing I brought my own down one. It would have been nice to have a lobby to sit in with a fireplace. All in All we were mostly pleased except for the things mentioned above. read more

Wait, is that a coffee place? With a Pistachio Rose Latte?? Ragged Point is a bit of an expected kind of test stop and inn along Ca-1. Everything we saw was $2-$5 more than it needed to be. Because *they can* out here with literally no competition. But, despite my cynicism this is a cooler-than-it-needs-to-be cafe with an explorable coffee menu. The line became long while we waited as the single worker take orders and made drinks. But the drink was worth the wait. There is no cell service and no wi-fi. Was here in July for a wedding. The view is gorgeous. But I don't think the hotels are worth the rate. It was $350 for a night for the cheapest room when I booked it 7 months before the wedding. There's not much do to at night there. And I feel like they don't really put an effort in to make it nice at night. There were a couple string lights in a corner. The restaurant closes really early, there's no bar, no fire pits. Nothing within walking distance. The bakery coffee shop is good. The restaurant is ok. Stayed for 2 nights, on the positive side the setting is very scenic and the hike down to the black sand beach from the grounds was very fun. We enjoyed breakfast and one dinner at the inn. As far as the room, very basic. The receptionist tried to upsell us to a different room, but since we weren't spending much time in the room we declined. We asked her what was wrong with the garden room and she said nothing if you like looking at a wall....That kind of took us aback after driving 5 hours. She then proceeded to tell us the internet only worked sporadically which was true, if it worked at all. We could barely send a text which I find pretty unacceptable. These rooms on weekends off season are over 350.00 a night and for that price the internet should work. Additionally the restaurant and bakery closed at odd hours so when we got there at check in time everything was closed and there isn't anything within a half hour to grab food or a snack. I also found this pretty off putting. The hotel just really didn't seem that interested in guest comfort or experience. I would not stay again due to these factors, we would stay in Cambria where there are many options for dining and accommodations. If you don't need internet or any amenities nearby the ragged point inn is probably ok, and because we stayed during the week we did not pay the 350.00 plus for a room because it is most definitely not worth that. read more

Unable to do trip due to emergency hospitalization. All other hotels refunded in spite of cancellation policy, they did not for the one night booked the day prior to hospitalization. If you want a relaxing experience and a beautiful morning of sleep - this is NOT the place. Great location but terrible customer experience -- who runs this place? There is a complete lack of thoughtfulness for the guests. Who allows the landscaping to work early mornings on Saturday, weed wacking right outside your room for hours, and using the blower all morning -- right outside our room and balcony. My partner and I haven't been able to sleep at all since 7am. It's now 10am and this guy is still doing his thing right outside our room -- even after begging the front desk to have him relocate. I'm paying for this? I went to the front desk and friendly asked if they could have him stop, change locations or come back later -- and the guy at the front desk did absolutely nothing to help. He said "he does this everyday." My partner is furious. We came here to have a loving, relaxing and beautiful experience -- to rest and rejuvenate with each other and nature. And we are leaving more tired and exhausted. Management here does not care. Overall, I'm absolutely shocked that this place is managed this way and the service is so terrible. Don't stay here! This place is so horrible. Just enjoy the view elsewhere. I got an ocean facing room because they said they were "pet friendly." What they don't tell you is that there is a pet fee that you have to pay over and above your room fee. When I told the woman that it was not ok that they are unclear about it, she told me to go back to the Central Coast (She had my address in front of her). Way to treat locals. Then our bathroom doorknob broke and we we're locked out of the bathroom. It took an hour for maintenance to check it out and they basically told us not to close the door for fear of being locked in/out. They have no room service, so if you're staying at the hotel, you have to go to the restaurant, order your food and then sit there waiting for it. For breakfast they told me it was a 20 minute wait even though there was hardly anyone there and plenty of tables open. As if to add to this cruel joke of this excursion, the alarm in our room went off at 6 o'clock in the morning, waking up our toddler. So that was really fun too. I rarely splurge for trips because I can't really afford it. This was an important trip for me. I'm so sad that this is what I had to deal with while I was here. I will also say that their staff is really rude, but I was rude too because of the poor service. You can tell people don't care to work here. read more

Treat yourself, friends, or even Mom and Dad: here's a deal on excellent, unusual rooms and meals. It's a getaway to the Big Sur area! See end of review for Highway 1 road status. The "locals'" special drew us in: spend the same for a room and 2 meals a day (dinner, then breakfast) that you'll spend at a high end lodging elsewhere-plus here are the sounds and cliff side views of our Pacific Ocean, luxurious rooms and wonderful staff. Try the oysters- the steak- crab cake Benedict- huevos rancheros..such good food. Along with daily snack ice cream, cookies and candy from the little store at this resort- and we await the return of the outdoor cafe and music. As of 4/22/23 Highway 1 was closed 4 miles above Ragged Point. What better reason to stay right there? read more
