I've been dying to try this restaurant after seeing reviews and finding out it's chef owned (yes!). We had reservations on a recent Saturday afternoon at 3pm. The restaurant is small (only seats 48) so reservations are recommended. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable, there wasn't very many people while we were there so I'm not sure how loud it gets when busy. They have a full bar so I ordered a drink and my husband loves his craft beers and they had a few (but he always prefers if they have a beer menu so he can read the beer description). For appetizers we ordered shrimp cocktail and the meatball. The shrimp and sauce were delicious, and the meatball was HUGE (we almost could have a meal with that!!! The meatball came with lots of sauce and ricotta with 2 toasted bread slices (we devoured every bit!). For dinner we shared 2 entrees, we got the seafood casserole which came with choice of side (we picked baked potato) and a vegetable medley, and the southern fried pork chops that came with mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. The food was so delicious we ate what we could and had to bring food home. Our server was excellent and very knowledgeable of the menu. This was one of the best places we've tried in a while. We eat out at least weekly and most places we don't go back for a second visit, but Lucky Dog Tavern will definitely stay on our rotation of places we love. read more

So if you ever wake up and find yourself sitting at the bar at the Lucky Dog Tavern on a Thursday night you may find me sitting there. Recently I became somewhat of a regular because the food and the service here is impeccable. Tonight, critically acclaimed server turned bartender Lilly, suggested that I try to Sausage and Bean Soup. Not only does she rank amongst the top three servers I have ever had in my entire life but she was 100% right about the Sausage and Bean soup. Get your car drive to Lucky Dog Tavern and all the time you're on your way there cross your fingers that the Sausage and Bean Soup is on the menu. It was beyond excellent. Just a giant mouthful of flavors expertly orchestrated. Otherwise, It's a gigantic gigantic menu but if the Sausage & Bean Soup is on the special absolutely have it. Take one home with you too. Went here for my fiancé's bday. I was able to make a reservation the same day for a party of 3 on a Wednesday. I wasn't able to get the exact time I wanted but close enough. So, again, make sure you make those reservations! We had the beef and puff pastry, which was still just as delicious as it was the first time. Make sure to get some bread on the side to mop up all that sauce! French onion soup was also enjoyed just as much as last time. New items we tried: the most expensive things on the menu at $48(?) each. The filet mignon came with asparagus and a potato croquette. It was a tender and flavorful dish. The croquette had a lot of flavor! The New Zealand rack of lamb. Ugh. In a good way. Like ughhhhhhh! Soooo good!! The most tender lamb I've ever had. And the mashed potatoes that accompanied it was delicious - even to my child that doesn't usually like potatoes unless it's fried. Now, we saved room for dessert since it was a special occasion. This was a pleasant surprise!!! We hadn't planned a lunch and thanks to my Yelp App this popped up as highly rated in the area we would be traveling through. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE! - The hostess was so busy and was great at greeting customers and answering the phones and keeping everyone in priority order in her head as people kept arriving. Our waitress, was one of the best have ever encountered in a restaurant. She was well rehearsed with the specials and the details around the dishes on the menu and drinks etc. She was so friendly, articulate and engaging - her enthusiasm made everything sound so delicious! The FOOD!!! holy moly - everything tasted so fresh. No stale oil...no slimy fish...it was fresh crisp and tasty. LOVED my fish and chips. Best I have had since I was in Northern Ireland for work. Also - they have real HEINZ ketchup. Accept no substitutes. LOL I was so full from my entree, which I could only eat half of...I couldn't resist the lemon blueberry bread pudding, that came with blueberry Gifford Ice Cream....MAINE Made. YUM. For a Tavern the inside was more upscale than we anticipated. Dark wood, clean and - more of an upscale gastropub. Restroom (1 person at a time) clean and tidy. Parking - onsite private parking lot. With such a large menu, we were skeptical about how good everything could be, but we were so happily surprised! All of the food was delicious! We loved the fried calamari (RI style) to start. It came with a sauce drizzled over the top instead of for dipping, but was still crunchy and delicious. The only minor complaint about the food was that the burger was slightly overcooked, but still tasty. Our waitress was also so welcoming and friendly. We will be back! Disappointed -- Turned Away at 2pm with an Empty Parking Lot We were really disappointed by our experience today. We arrived around 2pm, a family of four, excited to finally try this restaurant after hearing great things. After waiting about 10 minutes for the hostess to acknowledge and seat us, we were told there was "no room," that several tables still needed cleaning, and that they were holding spots for a 4pm reservation. There were only about eight cars in the parking lot, so it didn't make sense. It honestly felt like we weren't welcome -- maybe because we were wearing our daughter's sports team shirts after her tournament win and just wanted to celebrate as a family. Food did look good. The place was not full there were a few patrons at the bar and several empty seats at the bar as well as a couple of empty tables. The host was rather dismissive in fact he said the bar seats were reserved for someone who wasn't going to be there for 35 minutes. I understand you might think this is okay but my feelings are valid. I typically wont even post unless it's either really good or really disappointing. I love this restaurant, despite one of the owner's who is completely over the top and does not know how to respond to customer criticism. However, I have to give her credit for her front of house. Went a few months ago and the service was fantastic. There were parts of my dish that I loved (the sauce) and parts I didn't care for, but that is on me for trying a new dish (seafood melody). This is actually only one of a few restaurants that I put enough faith in to try something I may not like. My wife's dish was fantastic and the food has always been top notch. All the Wow's! First visit was a meet up with long time friends. We all had a wonderful experience. The menu is extensive. The wait staff are all very well trained, professional and friendly. Check in with the hostess. I do recommend you make a reservation. Private parking lot, so all good there. Restrooms near the entrance/exit. You can see from the photos attached we had a variety of meal. All well prepared. My Diver Sea Scallops were perfectly cooked. They came with a sauce that was fine, but really extraneous to my preference of a fresh, well cooked scallop. The stuffed shrimp was devoured! Good meatball sub that didn't repeat itself (as others have)! That 'Bad dog burger' is a hefty, tasty meal. With these delicious entrees we just had to go for dessert. The chocolate cake, with the addition of vanilla ice cream is a huge, decadent dessert. Absolutely enough to share. The creme brulee is so rich and creamy. Called to order takeout, chicken parm and other items. Asked if I could substitute the red sauce for Alfredo, and was told it would be a charge of $16 extra. The person on the phone said that doesn't seem right, and put me on hold to check with the manager. Manager confirmed it would be $16 extra. I expected an extra charge, but that is just absurd!! They lost out on a $80+ order tonight, and any future orders. They offer an entire entree with chicken, broccoli, and pasta Alfredo for $21. Make it make sense. Response to pompous owner...The one with the big feelings is obviously you. It shows with your angry responses with each review 3 stars or less. You're clearly insulted anytime anyone criticizes your restaurant about anything, as if you can do no wrong. You seem to dwell on the negative. You don't thank anyone for good reviews. You'd prefer to respond to criticism only. Theres no way to justify charging $16 for a sauce. Cream, butter, and cheese don't add up to $16, premium ingredients or not. read more

This was my first time here. I actually never heard of this place but my girlfriend has been here and she said it was good. It's a small cozy place. We sat at the bar. The service was great. Our waitress was named Katelyn and she was very friendly and on point. We got a bottle of Malbec and Portuguese Calamari. The calamari was so good!! For our entree we got the Filet Mignon and that came with scallops, shrimp, croquette and asparagus. It was cooked to perfection and it was delicious!!! It was pricey at $48 but worth every penny! My husband & I went last Saturday- I have to say the menu is huge - we have gone there several times - I ordered the lobster roll my husband the ck parm - they brought out lobster ravoli - told the waiter it was suppose to be a lobster roll ' so i.put the plate to the side - a different waitress came over and said I could take it home - wow thought that was nice - thanked her when our waiter brought my correct meal he informed if I wanted to take home the lobster ravoli it would be added to my bill - I said that wasn't what I was told - then I didn't want it - he said someone in the kitchen would eat it - okay - at the end yhe manager came over and told him what happened he said it was an error when she told me I could take it home - I wasn't looking to get a free meal it was the waiters fault he never wrote anything down - he had also came back to ask my husband which pasta he wanted - when my husband order the chicken parm he asked for angel hair pasta - I just thought this was handled very unprofessionally read more

Wow! We randomly found this place on our way down to Newport and were able to get seats due to a cancelled reservation. The food and drinks were absolutely incredible. Zack the bartender was also really fun to talk to. The portion sizes are huge but worth every penny. Even though we didn't have any stomach capacity for desserts, we will be back. read more

It's easy to drive right past Lucky Dog Tavern and think it's your run-of-the-mill sports bar or neighborhood pub but it's actually an unassuming gem tucked away in the quiet suburbs of North Smithfield. The space itself is cozy, warm, and inviting. It feels like you're dining in someone's home as opposed to a restaurant and everyone from the hostess to the waitstaff to the bartenders are extremely friendly. I often prefer to order a few apps and small plates and share. My favorites include the Asian style sale & pepper calamari and rock shrimp, which are nice and crispy and the Thai chili sauce is the right amount of sweet and spicy. I also love the stuffed mushrooms. Topped with melted mozzarella and loaded with crab & lobster stuffing, these things melt in your mouth. The tuna tatake is another favorite of mine. Served with three different sauces (sweet soy, sriracha aioli, and wasabi aioli), you can sort of build your own bite to your liking. If you don't mind getting a little messy, definitely order the spicy Thai peanut wings aka flappers. These are the full wing (drum, flat, and all) and your hands will get covered in sauce, but it's worth it. Finally, be sure to inquire about their desserts. I don't know how we went so many years without finding this gem. The fact that it is chef owned is a big plus. Appetizers, mains, and deserts were all top notch. The menu is massive and portions were ample. Was told there is nothing available yet almost every seat was open. Plus no one sitting at the bar. We ordered one thing to go for someone who wanted us to bring food home. We waited and still only a few people came into the restaurant and we were never offered a seat. We could have been served by then, I dont get it. The most unwelcomed weve ever felt.
