This is by far the worst grocery store I have ever shopped at. We have been living in Marina around 2 years and even though it is located 4 minutes away I would rather drive all the way to Sand City or Seaside for my groceries. Before this place I had never had the experience of buying spoiled meats but at this Lucky I have purchased bad meat and poultry. One time I even returned some bad pork chops and the clerk wasn't even surprised as if he was used to customers doing this. Another time I brought back a box of "fresh" strawberries only to bring them home and find mold on the bottom of the strawberries. Again they were totally unsurprised and they could have cared less. I honestly don't even understand why the health department hasn't shut them down yet. Don't buy anything here that isn't a paper product. read more

The produce here is always fresh and offers a great selection of fruits and vegetables. The sale prices are always a plus. However, I dislike going to any grocery store. Period. Today the store got hectic with customers at checkout and only two cashiers and one bagger. My cashier, a gentleman named Jared was closest to the unattended self-checkout. He had to stop scanning to clear my groceries. A customer had an issue and Jared quickly and politely excused himself to resolve the other customer's issue while the bagger caught up with bagging my items. A veteran employee walked up and saw all the customers in line and instead of helping said she's still on break :/ (Then go away.) I have been shopping at Lucky's for 7 years. Always check when you buy produce, usually not fresh. I have seen up to 10 carts or more in line and another line at self check with only one checker working. Believe me this happens on daily basis. Even though some of the checkers are not friendly and would rather talk to other staff about their schedule that be attenuative to the customer. I cannot blame them; it all goes back to Management. This store Manager is either clueless or just doesn't care. There is one particular person that when he or she has to check does not turn their light on, so people do not know whether to get in line. I have told a manger about this! Nothing done. However; the meat department and deli are great! I go to the grocery outlet most all of the time now and try to get to Safeway at Del Rey Oaks! I'm disappointed every time I come here for my grocery shopping. The fruit and vegetable section is never properly stocked and more often than, moldy fruit ( particularly the berries). The meat section is the same, low quality and rarely fully stocked. The evening shift seems to think they're shit don't stink. On a number of occasions, the cashiers and baggers will cuss and gossip with each other while they have a line of people waiting to be rang up. DO NOT buy their "fresh" seafood. Bought a lb. of shrimp, and I even asked the butcher how fresh it was, his response was "I got it in this morning". Went home and immediately knew after smelling it that it was far from fresh. Put some in a salad, and after a couple bites I had to toss it, really foul chemical taste. Threw the other 1/2 lb. away. Needed some weeekend items and popped in. We expected a bad experience after reading reviewed but were very pleasantly surprised by the store had all the items we needed seemed clean ( ok it's an older store and it shows but it's still appeared clean) the produced was good. Prices seemed typical for the coastal area. The cashier was very professional and had a great personality and was quite nice. We would have no problems coming here again to shop. read more

My biggest gripe with this store used to be the produce section. Walmart actually had better produce! But since Lucky's got remodeled, and Walmart is now too busy - I seem to come to Lucky's more now - 2-3 times a week actually. Fruit generally looks decent. The green veggies are now acceptable - however, I notice they are often out of things like fresh herbs (cilantro, basil or mint). They organic section is really lacking and needs more variety. But overall, I am happy with the produce. Meat section and deli - great. And rest of the store - well organized. I love the small size of the store. I can get through it quickly! It looks like the same staff here for a long time now. I've only ever had an issue with one woman checker on one occasion. Criticism - they need to make sure the person assigned to the self checkout area does not leave their post. Worst experience ever! It was such a big misunderstanding and she was being so rude about it! We had asked for bags since there were no bags at the end, she didn't give us bags and instead said "I don't really care!" when we asked for our bags the second time. GHETTO EXPERIENCE Take a look at the other negative reviews here and you will get the picture. The employees are rude and sullen, and I wonder if the manager's last job was as a bailiff in the county jail. The employees all act like they are doing you a favor handling your transaction. The area around the checkout stands is crowded and totally disorganized. Considering that you can find most things just down the road at Walmart or Grocery Outlet for less, where the employees are actually polite, there would seem little reason to shop here. They say that crap rolls downhill. This outfit is a perfect example. Downtown Marina is a zero growth area, and in fact, from a retail point of view, is shrinking. Save Mart Corporation doesn't appear to care about this location. I feel that corporate thinks that they have a strangle hold on Marina customers. Not me. Most of the employees seem to be nice and helpful. However, having lived in the big corporate world, is appears that corporate isn't fully supporting this store. Two days ago, we purchased food from their deli. It made us sick. Most would blame the store, and surly some of the blame should be placed accordingly. However, our attempt to deal at the corporate level was useless. I also need to mention late in the day the store has a choking smell, especially around the meat area. We simply shop in far better stores in nearby communities. In trying to stay within Yelp guidelines, I won't name the great stores we have discovered. However, I have found that overall the Yelp reviews will easily steer you to those alternate choices. read more

Always have a positive shopping experience at my local Marina Lucky. If I have a problem, easy to rectify with friendly staff. Always shop early in a.m. to avoid crowds & lines. Try to limit small load to use self checkout. Just take your time with sensitive sensors on self checkout. But the cashiers & courtesy clerks are always friendly & helpful to me. Savemart....which is now Lucky is located in the middle of Marina and is easy to get to. The employees for the most part are super kind and always helpful with anything I need. The prices are sometimes higher than they should be, but there is no other competition in Marina for groceries. I've never had a problem with the products. My only complaint is that sometimes the lines can be super long and they don't seem to care too much! Open up more lines and get us outta there faster! Overall a normal grocery store that can meet anyone's basic need of food, medicine and random other things. Overpriced. Understocked. Unfriendly. Three perfect adjectives to describe your experience at Marina's major grocer. In its third incarnation as "SaveMart", this place also failed miserably as Albertson's and as Lucky's prior to that. Throughout the years, it has become apparent that the quality of products, service and everything else in between exponentially gets worse. You will find that your produce expires at a more rapid rate than what's typically acceptable. Service is hard to find, good luck trying to find anything you need if you're unfamiliar with the infrastructure of the store. One experience that sticks out in my mind is when I was trying to find a cooking wine so I asked the closest employee that I could find. The employee I asked did not have the answer for me so he sought out his manager. After finding out that his manager was unavailable, he was happy to deliver the news that his manager was "taking a shit" and would be with me as soon as he was done. It was very dissapointing to no longer be able to come in to this store (like we did when it was Savemart) and get average customer service. Now it is below average. Mediocre store. The Save Mart in Sand City is much larger, cleaner, and has a far better, fresher fruit & vege department. The meat department always worries me when I need to walk by. I just can't stand smelling old meat in a grocery store; seems like there should be something (soap maybe?) that can be done about that. They put out expired food on the shelves and there is always rotten food in produce. They rarely cycle through their inventory properly, if the did this wouldn't be happening. Also a lack of training their new hires has also been a problem. read more

Worst experience at a grocery store tonight. No customer service what so ever. We had tried the self check out because we only had about 5 items when we rung up the watermelon it rang up the wrong one then the self check out froze. We waited a while and no one came. We finally went to grab someone. They came over a couple minutes later to tell us that it was our fault. Ok? She said we entered the wrong number. We explained we did not enter a number and that there was no number on the melon? No clue why she felt the need to be right and not just fix the problem. Customer service failure. It took too long to get help and then when we did receive help she was rude. She explained it was our fault again and I had to just excuse myself and let my husband finish so I did not lose my temper. It was a simple problem that turned into an infuriating experience because of the awful customer service. If she would have said I am sorry it looks like you entered it in the system wrong let me help you there would have been no issue? Or if she would have just smiled. I cannot imagine we are the first people to have a problem with a self check out system? read more

Every time I went here I would check the meat department for their 5 for 5 deals or the 2 for 1 tri tips.. but that's changed now he double the price of their tri-tip before the sale so one tri-tip is $40. They remove the bone in New York steaks scenes from the five for five deal and made all the packages in the $5 range anyways. What they have now does not compare to how it used to be. The last time I was there, I asked the cashier if someone can help me carry the water cases for me since I have injuries in my arm. The female cashier looked at me very sarcastically and asked me in a very demeaning condescending tone of voice " AND..what water case you are talking about ??".. I guess because she didn't see the injury in my arm and the severity of it, because I hide it under my sweater, she didn't seem to believe me and in an angry manner, she asked a guy to help me out. I find it sad to have one major grocer in a town and for it to be such a disappointment. Produce, most looks ok in the store but as soon as I get it out f the store it usually wilts into nothing. Basil, never buy t there. Corn, more often than not it is already starting to spoil, I am willing to bet their produce spends much more time than it should in transport. The sign as you walk in says something about it being a clean store, I have seen mold on shopping carts and don't go in the bathroom. The deli is good, service is mostly good, some staff are very helpful. I just wish they would clean up or a better grocery company would take over. read more

Horrible Management I went to pick up basics at my local Lucky and got into line to check out, like normal. I realized the line wasn't moving after sitting and waiting for about 5 min. I notice the woman at check out is now standing at the register by herself (belt FULL of her groceries). She lets us know that the cashier is refusing to check her out because she and her granddaughter (no older than 8 years old) aren't wearing masks. The store workers all end up walking away and every customer is now just sitting and waiting at the check out lines. The person behind the lady and her grand daughter then decides it's a good idea to start getting in the little girls face and start yelling at her about not wearing a mask..... This woman is getting so upset that she is inches from this little girl and her grandmother. Not a single Lucky employee in sight. It was as if the employees were allowing, if not hoping, for some kind of altercation! I could not believe what was happening right in front of me. I was the only person in the whole supermarket to tell that woman to leave a child alone??? Only once the person who was loosing control, moments from assaulting a child left the store did Miss Bleach Blonde in 4in heels and a pencil skirt suit decide to walk out from her office. She watched the entire encounter from 50ft away and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. SHAME ON YOU. To put a cherry on top of this sh** sundae, they decided to open the next register and take every looky Lou who showed up to watch people act ghetto. So every other customer got a big FU along with the woman and grandchild. I left all of my groceries right next to the woman you not only refused to serve but tried to incite a mob against. Is this really how Lucky employees are trained to handle these situations? Terrible service as a business and as community members. I will never give another dime to this chain. read more

I made the mistake of shopping at lucky again. One register open 10 people in line! They are trying to force shoppers to use the self check, the manager needs to be fired. Hire more checkers , there are many of us thatn will not use self check. There was one woman using it while we stood in line. If I have a chance I will send a letter to corporate and ask them to clean house to increase Staff morale and improve reputation of this Corporate branch. My experiences at this store have been pretty solid. They have a decent and fairly priced alcohol selection. The bakery is pretty good, especially for a typical grocery store. Their ethnic foods selection is better than average and they have a lot of hot sauces. Parking is pretty easy and the store is pretty clean and well organized. There were so many different styles and characters to choose from, and they only need a day in advance to get your order in! The trick to shopping in Marina is being wiling to shop at 4 different stores to get your basic groceries done at reasonable prices and quality. Sometimes the meat is fresh, sometimes it's not. Sometimes the fish is fresh, sometimes it's not (funny because we are so close to the sea, and there is some fishing industry still in the bay here). The produce looks better now than last year, but it still goes bad quickly (in a few days, and I have a fridge thermometer, so I know it's not that!), which is weird because we live in the middle of produce heaven, we should be getting some of the freshest produce in the world! Prices are higher than they are in sand city, less than 10 minutes south on the freeway, or the wal-mart a mile away, even the sale prices. The coupon and better sale items are almost always sold out by Saturday evening. Oh and the entire place seems just a little dirtier and smellier than it should. Some of the stuff on the shelves is disgusting and shouldn't be kept out. But checking out never takes more than 15 minutes, and that isn't too bad. Also there are some employees who still care, and try to do what they can in a hopeless situation. The gluten free items are spread out across three different areas of the store, but the selection is pretty good. The dairy free section here needs better product, but then again this is systematic with all the Savemarts I have been to. read more

It's awful since it first became Save Mart, even though it is back to being Lucky's, it is not nearly as good as it was when it was Lucky's before. They don't stock the items they used to stock, in fact, if I shop here I often have to go shopping elsewhere as well just to get the items that I used to be able to buy here for 30 years or more. Because of this, many people I know, myself included, go out of town to do their grocery shopping, Nob Hill and Safeway in the neighboring towns carry those missing items and it seems their prices are also lower than Lucky's. read more

Every time I enter this store I regret living in Marina. As I shop through the sub-par, hormone laden, mass produced meats, I feel my depression deepening. I may find one or two packages of overpriced, out of state organic beef amongst the pre-marinated MSG tri-tips and Foster Farms chicken pieces. Don't even get me started on the produce section! We live in the Salad Bowl of the US, yet I can't seem to find a piece of fruit that isn't from NZ, Mexico, or Chile. And organics? Forget it. They may have a few battered, bruised pieces of organic fruits here and there, but nothing you'd want to put into your mouth. As far as prices go--forget it. They definitely know they're the only major grocer in town and exploit their captive audience. The smell--hasn't changed in 2 years, if the previous reviewer noted it in 2006. The employees have even become less friendly and helpful in the 2 years I've shopped there, as if they no longer enjoy their jobs. Bad management? Who knows. Sad.
