I probably asked too many questions, but they were so sweet and kind and answered everything I asked with a smile. Unfortunately, the wrong customer had taken my drink, and they had to make me another one. I totally didn't mind waiting though. This used to be my favorite bakery in Monterey. Their almond croissant was amazing, and they were the only place around that made a simple ham and cheese sandwich that reminded me of the ones I had in Paris. Something has definitely changed. I don't know if it's new ownership or a change in management, but this visit was incredibly disappointing. I paid $14.95 for a ham and cheese sandwich that had just two slices of ham, two slices of cheese, and what tasted like day old bread. It was dry, underwhelming, and nowhere near the quality I remembered. It's disappointing to see a place I loved go downhill. I really hope they can get back to what made them so special. decided to give this bakery a second chance, but unfortunately I was disappointed again. My first purchase was a kouign-amann, one of my favorite pastries. I've had many excellent versions over the years, and this one missed the mark. It seemed overbaked, lacked the rich buttery flavor that makes a kouign-amann so special, and simply wasn't enjoyable. Considering the price, I was disappointed enough to return it. Thinking I couldn't go wrong with a croissant, I then ordered the almond croissant. It was enormous--easily large enough for two people--but size couldn't make up for the quality. The top layer had some flakiness and a hint of buttery flavor, but the interior was dense and heavy. Both pastries also had damp, wet bottoms, which made me wonder if they were not cooled properly after baking and ended up steaming from their own heat. The almond croissant was filled with far too much filling. Instead of complementing the pastry, it overwhelmed it. The filling was excessively sweet and heavy, and I ended up throwing away about three-quarters of the croissant. The only standout feature was the fresh sliced almonds on top. At $8.95, this was the most expensive almond croissant I've ever purchased. Even by Monterey-area standards, the pricing felt very high. For those prices, I expected pastries with better texture, balance, and execution. Unfortunately, my experience did not justify the cost. The prices are not posted!!! read more

I had a delicious cherry croissant and clam chowder bread bowl at this cafe. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the free hot coffee they had at this location! The cherry croissant was perfectly buttery and flaky, with the acidity of the cherry adding just the right kick to this breakfast pastry. I was initially hesitant on getting the clam chowder at a bakery and was thinking of getting it at a seafood restaurant on Cannery Row, but the reviews were glowing and the price was reasonable. I'm glad I took a chance on it, because the bowl was chockful with clams, potatoes, celery, and a briny creamy seafood broth base. Do not get scammed. Stopped by this French bakery last month with my wife. We've been here a few times in past years before 2022 whenever we visited Monterey and it was always decent. It now feels like just another tourist trap like on cannery row. Ridiculous prices for sub par product. Red hair worker was rude and unhelpful. First off, I must say the servers at this Paris Bakery Cafe location were exceedingly kind, and what was going to be a quick coffee turned into the perfect brunch to start our day. While "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was playing gently in the background, even my 4-year old daughter had an opinion, "The Bakery's cute, Mom!" I definitely enjoyed my coffee and ham & egg croissant, and I was too eager to eat it to take a better picture... This was my fav French bakery and was very popular spot abt 20 years ago. I remember their fresh sandwiches, almond croissant-super popular, and chocolate cake! Recent visit to Monterey, I went to have my fav but wow.. all the pastries were flat. They were not risen they all looked cheap, pretending to be french pastries... and chocolate cake and the rest did not look french at all. In good french bakery will never advertise $30 for 5 pastries. We ordered cappuccino and cafe a'laite . Worst ever. Bitter and tasted cheap cheap coffee. Good bakery with lots of different croissants, cinnamon rolls, scones, cakes, cookies, sandwiches, coffee drinks & teas to choose from. Conveniently close to Monterey's downtown Alvarado Street. We had breakfast here and were impressed by the wide variety of beautiful baked goods in their showcase. We enjoyed the strawberry almond croissant and blueberry scone. They were both delicious and a good size. I had drip coffee and they allow free refills which is nice. The coffee is a little on the weak side for me but I usually like really strong coffee. They give really big mugs for hot tea which is really nice. Pleasant place with nice sunlight in this corner location. read more

So disappointing. We've been coming here for years, and we're willing to give the new owners a good chance. But the place has been going steadily downhill over the past two years in particular. We used to love the rolls that came with the salads, but both the salads and the rolls disappeared. And now they don't have any bread left. The bread pudding used to be the absolute best ever, and now it's totally different, very boring, too sweet, and dry. They had the best biscotti... again, those are gone too. The sandwiches used to be quite good, but today our "pesto paninis" didn't have any pesto on them, and the bread is nowhere near as good as the focaccia they used to use. We are now looking for a new favorite bakery to visit, sadly. It's so sad that a place which used to be really special and delicious has declined so much. Not what it used to be. This used to be our family's go-to bakery. Recently, it's completely changed and doesn't feel authentic at all. The chocolate croissant is big, but it is like a giant bread roll with a tiny sliver of chocolate and isn't light or flaky like a croissant should be. Very overpriced. I've known 3 Paris bakeries; pre-covid, post covid, and the current abomination. Pre covid: a little slice of heaven. Tons of options, super affordable. Post-covid, options cut in half. Less adorable, but the core items were still there. Current day: resembles the prior zero. Giant over priced crosssints. The Parisian bread loaf is disgusting and $7. Even the post Covid version was under $4 and delicious. The new bread is not French nor Parisian. It a dense loaf was terrible flavor. This is one of our favorite stops when we are visiting Monterey. It is a nice walk when we are staying near Cannery Row. This cafe is off the beaten path, located 2 blocks away from the main Alvarado Street that gets more foot traffic. There has never been a problem getting a table to eat there, but then, we tend to stop by just after the lunch rush. It can get warm when the heat form the sun comes through the windows with southern exposure. Seating in the main area is wheelchair accessible through their main corner entrance. There are a few steps going up to the back seating area ; it's technically wheelchair accessible since the cafe has another street entrance back there, however it would require you to place your order in the lower main section of the cafe, then go outside the main door and come back in through the back door. They also have a couple of tables set up outside. There's also a restroom at the cafe, which is convenient for washing hands after eating sandwiches. There are 2 sides to the cafe, a bakery side and a lunch/sandwich/salad side. They have a good variety of sandwiches, a few salads and soup. Ask them what the Soup of the Day is. My daughter loved their Tortilla Soup, but we haven't seen it there during the last few visits. Perhaps it's just bad timing that they don't have it on the days we visit. We noticed that the prices have gone up since our last visit the year before. During our latest visit, we ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich ($13), warmed, which was delicious. The BLT Sandwich ($13), also warmed, and pretty tasty. The Veggie Delight ($13) was a bit lacking, and it used to have avocado in it. Note : There is an extra "Delivery Fee" charged when you order at the cafe and dine in (see photo of receipt) . We happened to be walking downtown and passed this bakery. It was my husband's birthday so I popped in to see about getting him a little treat. There are a few small tables and seats outside so he waited with our pup while I checked it out. Even though it was a little later in the day the displays were mostly full. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. There were lots of pastries; danish, croissants, eclairs, but I saw a lavender cake I thought would be perfect! I also ended up getting a bread pudding us as well. That evening I presented him with the piece of cake but he took a bite and did not care for it. IlWe also tried the pudding but it was dock hard. We through the pudding out immediately but I tried to finish the cake however I was unable. It was far too dry and lacking flavor. To be fair, it was late in the evening by the time we got to our treats but they still should not have been that dry or stale. This is the only time I've been to this location and it will probably be the last so just know that this review is only based on one experience here. read more

This was extremely disappointing. I have been coming to this bakery since I was a child and since the new ownership it has gone downhill. They removed their French onion soup for clam chowder, in what way is clam chowder French? If you're going to market this bakery as French then at least keep traditional French dishes. The new owners have completely stripped this place of its uniqueness and turned it into a gentrified cafe you can find anywhere. Service was excellent here for our first time visit. We got our order to go and ordered a variety of sandwiches, quiches, and baked goods. Inside there is a nice seating area. They had tables outside as well. At home we enjoyed the clam chowder and French onion soups. We only got a cup of each that were fairly small servings. I had some of both and preferred the chowder. Nice and creamy with chunks of potato and clams. The French onion was good but I did want more broth. The soups came with large French rolls. The sandwiches were good. The ratio of bread to filling is pretty high though. Our favorites were the croque monsieur and chicken focaccia. Hubby had the petit pain salami sandwich and liked it. Though he mentioned that he liked more filling in his sandwich, he said that the bread was very good so that he didn't mind this. Overall we had a nice lunch. read more

This was our first and last time going since it has changed ownership. The service was nice enough. As you can see from the pictures, there is little to know filling in the pastries. The flavor was okay but the price is not worth it. The size doesn't make up for not having anything in it. My scone had one or two raspberries if that. The jalapeño croissant was sad and barely had any cheese. This is a very sad excuse for what it used to be. I was hoping it wouldn't have changed this much. I should've known when I saw the display case 1/3 of the size. I figured we could try but we were VERY disappointed. They have a really good selection of savory and sweet and they also make really good. Breakfast sandwiches. I used to frequent this spot ages ago with my gal pals & always had a tasty experience. On the search to satisfy a hankering for an almond croissant on a Saturday afternoon while visiting the area, we came here...only to find that their closing hour was at 2p & we got there a little after 3p. However, when we peeked through the glass, we saw there were people inside. The door was opened to us! They hadn't shut down the till yet, so we could still be served! The caveat was that they didn't have as many items available & some were in the back not on display. We got a couple of almond croissants & a slice of opera cake. The croissants were fabulous--yummy, flaky, buttery. The opera cake was flavorful, but too sweet for us. The bakery was still how I remembered it after all this time--a small narrow shop with a big case of goodies, some tables on 2 levels, & a big mural on the back wall. When we paid, our bag of croissants was accidentally dropped on the ground unapologetically, but with an assurance that they'd be fine. Customer service was sufficient & straightforward, & it was easy to give a pass on the lack of enthusiasm since I really appreciated the after hours service. i've been going to Paris Bakery for years. The original owner was Algerian French from Paris pastries were outstanding. They had a new owner over the last two years. The number of clientele has diminished market and so has the quality of the pastries. They're almost inedible. It makes me sad to write this review because it has always been part of our experience of Monterey. read more
