We were recommended this bakery by a friend who visits Carmel often and really loves it, so we were excited to try it while visiting from Texas too. It's a small shop, and since I wasn't sure yet if I wanted a pastry, I ordered a coffee first while my husband looked at the case. One of the women behind the counter told me, "Usually you order pastries first and then we get the coffee at the end." The way it was said immediately made me feel uncomfortable, like I was somehow doing something wrong. I apologized and explained we weren't from here and I wasn't even sure yet if I wanted anything else. Their tone changed after that and became much friendlier, which honestly made the interaction feel even more awkward. My husband ended up ordering pastries, including a chocolate croissant for me, and both the latte and croissant were good. Sometimes the experience matters just as much as the food. It's hard to fully enjoy a place when your first impression made you feel unwelcome. I truly wanted to love this spot because it came so highly recommended as she visited it daily, but I left feeling more embarrassed than excited to return. read more

This is a cute hidden pastry shop at the top of the hill in Old Monterey that you must try. The bakery is small, within an old timey facade with fresh baked goods for you to indulge in on your relaxing morning. I love a good almond croissant and they did not disappoint here. There were actually a number of pastries I wanted so I will have to return and try some more later on. The service was attentive and polite. The staff work in a cramped area behind the counter, albeit decorated, since the building itself is the same size as the State Park exhibited buildings from the past. I felt this appearance was very charming to match its bakery vibes. :) I would not pass this establishment by without giving this a try. We came across the bakery randomly after lunch and woww!! I wish this was closer to where I live but any time I am in Monterey again, this is going to be a definite stop for me. Got tart, cherry pistachios, chocolate cake, and not picture is the pain aux raisin. I tend to prefer dark chocolate heavily and surprisingly the best two dessert for me were the tart and cherry pistachios. Still dreaming about them. That was decent the almond croissant is the winner the morning bun was just okay. The coffee here is not that strong. The prices are really high I don't think I'd come back except for that truly amazing canelle. They are hard to find and this one was absolute perfection. Amazing! Best ham and cheese croissant I've had in the states and they will heat it up for you. I had to share it and wish I'd got my own. I had my own almond croissant which was very messy, a little heavy on the filling, wasn't as flaky as the ham and cheese. My husband got the chocolate croissant which is actually a pain au chocolate but when I referred to it that way they surprisingly didn't know what item I was referring too. He said it was good but needed more filling! They had quiche too which they heated up too, I bet that was good. Would definitely recommend. read more

Another one of our must-stops when we visit Monterey -- an authentic French pastry shop that looked like it was plucked directly from a winding cobbled street in Bordeaux's Old Town. I say Bordeaux because this pâtisserie serves Canelé -- one of Bordeaux's many gifts to gastronomy. From the outside, it looks like a mini bundt cake, with fluted sides and a small dimple on top, the color of dark mahogany like someone left it in the oven too long and now it's burnt. But bite into it and you experience a most comforting crunch -- like biting into caramelized toffee, and inside, you taste a yellow soft, dough -- its texture halfway between egg pudding and a flan. Then comes the almond croissant -- a masterpiece with a flaky golden crust generously smothered with sliced almonds and dusted with powdered sugar. I bit into its buttery interior, and I'm transported back to our trip to Bordeaux -- being shown the sights by (who else?), our friend and culinary GPS, tB. We paired these gems with cups of bracing Americano -- what a great way to start the day! We came in early, so we had a glimpse of Monsieur Lusseau working on the pastries. Had some time to kill in the morning and wandered to this bakery for an almond croissant ($7.25). It's pretty pricey and costs more than what I pay for an almond croissant in SF. The shop is tiny and has a small outdoor seating area, not great when it's raining, but probably quite nice when weather is better. It's decent for the area, and I would probably return if I lived here. It wasn't as flakey as I hoped but it did have a decent amount of almond paste though, so happy they didn't skimp on that! read more

Located in the historic Adobe Fremont house, this bakery has seating on the front patio and side patio. We enjoyed the seasonal pear pastry and the bichon which is a flaky pastry filled with lemon crème. So good and just the right amount of sweetness so you can still taste the fruit. We had food brewed coffee and English breakfast tea (they use Art of Tea brand which is good). Aster eating, we then got chocolate truffles and Macarons. Will return! read more

We didn't try the almond croissant, which is apparently the popular favorite. There are no wrong choices here. They're not kidding when they tell you everything is great. What a treasure of a shop. We also partook of their quiches for breakfast one day. They heated them for us so we could enjoy them on their lovely patio. We had one of each of their four flavors - goat cheese & tomato, spinach, mushroom & leek, and Lorraine. These are round individual sized quiches with a nice crust. The Lorraine was particularly nice. I would recommend them all, if you're into the ingredients. We also had mochas, which were more chocolatey than sugary. A decent level of sweetness for me, a person who usually asked for things half sweet. The flavor was intense, so if chocolate is your thing, esp dark, get this! I had them add about an inch more steamed milk to my 16oz (which they were happy to do) and then it was perfect for me. The patio area is peaceful, the staff were all very kind, informative and accommodating. I'm glad we don't live around here or we'd be here alllllll the time Definitely stop in! Probably one of the best French pastries we have had in the area from Sonoma to Big Sur. We tried almost everything displayed. The quiche was really good. Most of the quiches I had in the past was very dense and heavy. This one was surprisingly light so i could not stop having it. One caveat was about the strawberry cake. I was expecting a very fluffy texture of the cream on top and inside and it turned out to be very dense. Not my style but still delicious. Sometimes on weekends, the line is out the door and the inside is very small and quaint so you need to get there early and need to be quick about what you decide to order they run out of things quickly. Sometimes I get coffee along with my pastries if I don't get it at my favorite coffee place near the plaza. I go to Monterey about 2 to 3 times a year and I always stop at this place. Spinach and cheese croissant (5/5) Ask for it heated and it's simply a buttery, flaky, cheesy goodness. The spinach was fresh and contrasted the cheesiness well. 2. Tomato and goat cheese Quiche (5/5) The combination of crumbly goat cheese and tomato pairs very well together. It was decadent and not overwhelmingly rich or heavy. Friendly and quick service. 3. Canele (4/5) Not my forte, but we got this for my partner to try. I have had canale elsewhere and have to say their canale is actually one of the better ones I've had. If you're in Monterey and love baked goods like I do, this is a must stop (although I agree: if you want the goods, you gotta go early, since they rightfully sell out). I got two cake slices and the apple galette for my father-in-law, and these were the perfect treats. The sweets are not American sweet: instead, the flavors and textures are more nuanced and complement each other. For example, the small cake I got had a bit of passion fruit gelee and worked so well with the perfectly baked sponge cake. The apple galette was not engulfed in pastry as a way to distract you from the apples: instead, the apples took center stage and were caramelized, with a just-there bit of burnt (on purpose) sugar. As a fellow baker who is nowhere near this level of skill, I can confidently say these are baked goods at a high level of precision and thought. The ambiance is adorable, since the bakery--while small--is in this old building that just adds to the charm. The service was also helpful and efficient and showed that the owners and managers know that good service is the correct complement to baked goods of this caliber. read more
