HIGHWAY ROBBERY! I brought in three pairs of pants that were way too big/long. Got back one pair that was too long and two that were too short. And they were altered in a haphazard way that makes the pants sit oddly on my body; like too much was taken in on one side rather than evenly distributed. And to add insult to injury I was charged $40 a pair! Avoid this place; you have many other reputable choices. read more

While she does a great job, her prices are outrageous. One pair of jeans needed just a raw hem (just cutting) $25.00 which was the same for the 2nd pair of jeans with a regular hem. There are other good tailors that won't break the bank. Been going to her for years but no longer. read more

Lucy Tailors destroyed three shirts of mine. Instead of giving me genuine expert advice as to how best to take take in several dress shirts (I have broad shoulders and a narrow waist), Lucy took them in so much that they created a strange hump-back looking bunching in the back. She then tried to blame the shirt. I've lived in many cities with good tailoring, so I know that what I was asking for is not that complicated. She's fine for simple things like hemming pants, but I had to drop all the rest of her work off at goodwill. Will never come back. read more

Instead of hemming the dress as requested, the straps were shortened excessively, resulting in an awkward neckline and a dress that's still too long. Maybe this was a quick and easy attempt at a fix but it now has to be completely retailored. read more

Have had pants and dresses tailored here and was very happy. Contemplated spending $50 to get a coat zipper replaced on an 15+ year old favorite coat that cost only $75 and decided to get it done. The fixed zipper had bright white fabric against a cream coat (zipper visible). It didn't match and I wouldn't mind if the zipper wasn't seen when zipped but it was visible. I asked if there was cream or off white zipper fabric and was told no and that no one would notice. I wish I had known it wasn't going to match before I spent the money. My daughter recently had her wedding dress altered at Lucy's. The rudeness and unprofessionalism of her daughter at the front desk is beyond belief. When my daughter had her fitting, she was only told, "Don't call, we'll call you when it's ready." Six and one half weeks later, one month before the wedding - no word. I stopped in- daughter barked at me, "Not ready." I said, "It's been six and one half weeks, at this point, I need a date it will be ready." Her response, "She don't do it until two weeks before. Can't give you a date. Don't know if you know her work, but she don't screw up." Can't comment on that as my daughter lives in Philadelphia and hasn't been able to try it on yet. (She was hoping to do this when she was in Branford one month after the fitting.) My advice- go elsewhere or brace yourself for incredibly rude behavior and lie about the wedding date. My mom raved about this place so I decided to come here to get a bridesmaid dress tailored. Both times I went to get the dress altered and to pick up the finished product I got along very well with the seamstress and her daughter who seems to take care of the administrative responsibilities. I read reviews in advance and got the idea that it wouldn't help me if I was sassy with these people, so I did my best to be a nice customer and hoped they would take good care of me in return. UH NOPE. 1) ATMOSPHERE- I was quite put off by the fact that both times I visited this place, the very young granddaughter of the seamstress (I'm assuming since it seemed like a mother-daughter run business) was running wild throughout the place which was just distracting and obnoxious. This kid was not well behaved and I tried to be nice but these people should be trying to please me, not the other way around. I will elaborate on this further but if you're going to charge top dollar for a horrible tailoring job, you should be able to afford some kind of childcare. I am a nanny and if I'm going to pay out the wazoo for a horrible tailoring job, at least don't make me feel like I'm at my actual job while you are doing your job. IT'S CALLED BEING PROFESSIONAL. 2) COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS- I'm not a small girl, usually a size 12 but I still deserve a dress that fits right. Please see the pic below of the abnormal/embarrassing sagging in the upper back of my dress in a photo taken by the wedding photographer. Also please note that this is not something I would have noticed since unfortunately I do not have eyes in the back of my head; but the seamstress definitely should have noticed this- I had my hair in a high ponytail at the fitting. This seamstress cut off maybe 3 inches from the hem of my dress and put a little stitch in the side near my side-boob (which should have been much tighter since I had several close Janet Jackson moments throughout the night) and charged me $70 for those services. I was floored. I could have cut off the 3 inches myself and actually profited off of those Janet Jackson moments since the wedding WAS in New Orleans... WASTE OF MONEY. 3) TIME- I have been losing weight lately so I took this dress to get tailored 9 days before I had to leave for the wedding. I use to live in NYC and would regularly get rush jobs on tailored dresses within 2 days and it would be reasonably priced, so it didn't occur to me that showing up 9 days before a deadline would be an issue. Is it something in the water out here? Or is tailoring NOT the same job no matter where you are in the country?!? If so, let's get the water tested out here folks! So in a nutshell- do not go here unless you're looking to be overcharged for a careless tailoring job OR need a mental birth control experience... the only party that benefits from this experience is the business. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE--Would give zero stars if I could. Called to inquire about tailoring for a bridesmaid dress to get an idea of prices/availability/turnaround/etc since I'm shopping around the shoreline area for a tailor that can alter my dress within a somewhat constricted timeframe. The girl who answered sounded like a child and was incredibly rude, didn't actually answer my questions, and gave minimal information. When I asked if they did bridesmaid dress alterations, she said something vague about coming into the shop and didn't explain anything to the effect of availability/appointments/if they only took walk-ins/etc despite my asking. The tone of her voice sounded impatient and annoyed. The true dealbreaker, however, was when I asked how long she expected it to take, she simply replied "it'll be done". I asked for clarification, such as how many days/weeks that would potentially be so that I could plan ahead, and she rudely and exasperatedly repeated that it's just "gonna be done" by the date I needed it without any additional explanation and added that I was "cutting it close anyway". Needless to say, I will take my business elsewhere since the person answering their phone can't even be bothered to interact with customers professionally or with any manners whatsoever. I'm honestly surprised this place has such a good rating, makes me think that either the reviews aren't genuine or I just happened to talk to a singular jerk employee. If it's the latter, I highly recommend getting someone else to answer the phones since they represent the business to callers. read more

I rarely give reviews, but I am so disgusted in this place. I dropped off a Burberry jacket to get a button replaced and even brought the extra Burberry buttons for them to fix it when I picked it up I didn't check it right away but they charged me. I got home button wasn't fixed! Then they tried telling me I never gave them the buttons and I 100% did. I brought back and they said they would fix and find no matter what. I came back when they said it would be ready and the buttons were still not fixed! They were rude and told me I never gave it to them and they cannot fix it! NEVER GOING THERE AGAIN! read more

Yes, I'd have to agree with the other Yelper that customer service isn't their forte. I had some work done recently and they never called me to let me know it was done. Even though "Call customer" was explicitly written on my invoice. That's not the bad part. The bad part is they didn't offer one apology. Nothing. Nada. Not a "I'll knock a buck off your total" or "Here's a Tootsie Roll kid for your trouble". But I'm not at all surprised. During my first visit, the atmosphere seemed a little chaotic. It was almost like they had other things on their minds and couldn't be bothered with my instructions. I repeated my instructions three times and had them even write them down just to be safe. I recently had a memorial pillow made from one of the sweaters that my mother loved. The pillow well exceeded my expectations. In fact, I was so impressed that I had a second pillow made. Now I see why the reviews were not good. I should have listened to the reviewers. I went there today and the service I received was terrible. They didn't want to give me a price until after fitting me for alterations, and said I should leave the dress there and call back tomorrow for the price. Finally got a price before leaving, which was way too expensive for me to afford. She grabbed the dress forcefully out of my hands in front of other customers and ripped all the pins out, (tearing the bridesmaids dress while doing so.) I would NEVER recommend this place. The hem lines have not been straight (sloppy) and the fit of my garments are less than stellar. I recently had an opportunity to speak with Lucy regarding some negative reviews. What she had to say was quite eye opening. Of course (2 sides to every story) Lucy told me, she had to enforce a cash only policy, because numerous Brides would pass bad checks, phony names, leave the state, ditto situation for prom gowns etc. I asked Lucy if she would like me to help her address the negative reviews, and explain her side and how misunderstood she felt. Lucy is a proud honest person, who was known all her life as a master seamstresses and perfectionist. She would keep measurements and notes in her head, and run at the speed of lighting. Her business continued to grow and the busier it became, of course some things will slip through the cracks, as it does in every business, she is after all only human! Also, please Keep in mind this is a family run business, that does not come with the luxury of customer service training, or the diplomacy of a polished executive. As another reviewer said, the service is "matter of fact" , understandable in a busy place like this. The very day I came to see Lucy, I too found some of my garments needed to be slightly re-altered, I felt it was simply a case of "lost in translation" meaning, Lucy views a garment from the perspective of an experienced Tailor, I see it as "Oh just cut this" or "pin this here" and did not understand the difficulty or that I may be ruining the design of the garment. When I called to say I needed some items re-altered, and one item was missed (I'm sure by mistake), I was confused to hear, "that was impossible" ! Rather than argue with a busy front desk person, I came with my garments, and was surprised to hear Lucy felt I meant she charged me for work she did not do, and was very upset, that I would think that, because she would never do that to anyone. "LIGHT BULB MOMENT"! I finally "got" Lucy, and where she was coming from. She had me re-try on the garments and made the new adjustments. She was telling me how bad she felt, because she wants her customers to be happy and look great. I asked Lucy, "how can you possibly hold all the sewing info in your head, work non stop, and be 100 percent perfect each and every time" it's impossible, because you're only human! She laughed, then told me she was deeply saddened about the poor reviews, but if you consider, the volume her business does, the amount of negative reviews are relatively low. Now that I have learned to "work with lucy" I now know to be very specific, and write things down, bring cash, and above all trust her trained eye. If you have a problem, she will certainly accommodate you. I sincerely hope this sheds some light from Lucy's perspective, and helps you in your selection of what I would call a very busy, well known, trustworthy, and talented tailor. read more

Brought my wedding gown to be steamed prior to wedding. Needed to be touched up after travelin so far. Woman opened zipper of garment bag without taking care - just pulled zipper down fast and managed to catch delicate petals on my gown in the zipper. A bitter sweet experience because I had three items to be alterned .two were absolutely beautiful.I was so happy I even didn't mind paying a higher price .but what I didn't realize was one of my skirts was totally misconstrued and alternate totally wrong the bitter part of my experience was instead of her listening to my complaint she totally try to tell me that I didn't know that my skirt that I have been wearing for more t3months wasn't the way I was saying.come on people especially woman know there own cloths .I will never go back to that place ever again I was very mistreated .and if you read this review please don't ever go there thank you for reading.y review read more

Unbelievably expensive minor alterations on a bridesmaid dress. I felt rushed through the fitting, and was sort of shushed about one of my requests. The family dynamic in there is very weird--Lucy's daughter(?) was complaining to me in pretty vulgar terms about her own daughter, the precocious and borderline rude little girl who was helping at the desk. She also said a lot of nasty stuff about another customer who had been in the shop at the same time as me...made me wonder if they would turn around and talk about me too as soon as I left. I have never been so disappointed with a tailor in my life. I brought my dress in (despite less than stellar YELP reviews) to have the hem taken up and a strap tightened. When I was told that the dress was ready, I asked what was the price, and was told $80.00. I found this to be completely outrageous to have a hem taken up and a strap tightened. I asked to speak with the owner (Lucy) to ask if there was anything they could do about the price, as it was more than I had EVER spent on dress tailoring and alterations. She ended up hanging up on me. When I called back, she denied hanging up on me, and told me that she would take $5 off my alterations. Bottom line - horrible customer service, the owner is rude and defensive, and the prices are outrageous. Use another tailor. read more
