There a few places to shop for groceries in North Beach. Luke Local grocery on Green street offers lots of varieties of drinks and food. Luke Local has different locations across San Francisco. You can get fresh locally sourced seafood and fresh meat. They have a good selection of wines. When the bars outside gets crowded in North Beach and you want to brown bag it on the street during a street festival this would the place to grab that drink. When you want to go to Washington Square for a random picnic this would be the place to load and reload on the food and drinks. They also have fresh produce. You will find good desserts ( not deserts) inside. All around a good place to go for a liquor run or to grab some groceries in North Beach. Lots of goodies once you are at Luke Local indoor they are some import goods so check the prices because of the tariff war They have a good wine selection for the wine pour but make sure to look at the possible price increase of goods from offshore

I only purchased a water bottle but was treated with the most stellar service when I visited this past November! From the person who directed me to the correct aisle to the cashier, service was made especially friendly by taking the time to actually look up and provide a warm smile. Store was clean and well organized with several Italian speciality food items.

$54 of groceries but the romanesco was mislabeled
    Allen T.

I just got home after spending $54 on a small bag of groceries and I'm pretty mad because they mislabeled their prices and were rude when I pointed it out. I'm mad at myself for actually paying for this instead of leaving the groceries and walking out. Be sure to check the prices when they ring you up. Luke's Local charges premium prices (2X Trader Joe's) for supposedly a premium experience, which I'm totally cool with, but little things like mislabeling prices and trying to get away with it can really piss off regular customers. I almost never write negative reviews because I want to support local businesses but charging super premium prices and being rude about it is inexcusable. So here's the story - I wanted to buy some nice veggies for dinner and went to check out the produce section at Luke's since they tend to have nice stuff. Well - everything was quite pricey (Luke's wanted $12 for a bunch of asparagus which would have been $6 at TJ) but whoa - they had some nice romanesco for $3.99/lb in the same bin with the cauliflower. (Romanesco is a type of cauliflower). Since I was at Lukes, I picked up a few other fancy things including fresh pasta, fancy cat food, some Graffeo coffee, and dish soap, which brought the grand total to $54 - which again, I'm totally cool with the price. While ringing me up, the cashier had no idea what my romanesco was, so I told him it was $3.99/pound and pointed right at it (the produce counter is directly in front of the cash register). The sign clearly said $3.99 a pound for cauliflower and regular white cauliflower and romanesco were in the same bin. Perhaps I was overly helpful in saying that "it's a romanesco - it's a fancy cauliflower" - so I guess that's what did it because the computer said that romanesco was $5.99 a pound. WTF? A different cashier (a very rude woman) barged in and said that it's $5.99 a pound even though I was pointing right at the sign that says it's $3.99 with a several other romanesos still in the bin directly over the sign. She pointed to another sign on different shelf a few feet away for the zucchini that said romanesco was $5.99/pound. Well - that's really misleading and I'm mad that I actually paid for this. Yes, I'm writing a 1 star review because they ripped me off by $2 and were rude about it.

nice grocery store...different picks and variety..it changes..i like visiting walking by on green st...positive..there's another luke's local in cole valley.

Cute little boutique grocery store. My favorite thing is the signature pastrami sandwich! The pastrami slices are a little thinner, which I prefer, and is contrasted by a delicious slaw. Highly recommend their deli for this sandwich, and while you are waiting you can buy your drink in the store itself!

Five stars for the service (thank you Dan from Boston) and the saving grace of their SF Italian sandwich and solid drip coffee. Very happy Luke's is now on this corner in North Beach. If you like Gus', you'll be happy to have a Luke's nearby too. Looking forward to trying the No. 580 (breakfast burrito and drip coffee for under $10) soon...

    Chicken Meatball Sub

It doesn't seem like they make too much in-house here, mainly featuring local brands and some fancy national brands. Though the sandwich counter was appealing since they were all made in-house, fresh to order. Had a mixed experience with one decent sandwich and one mediocre sandwich, hence the "OK" 3-star rating. SF Italian: Pretty much what I'd expect to find in North Beach. A bunch of fancy cold cuts, some provolone cheese and a slightly spicy kick on a fresh ciabatta roll. There was some arugula, but it actually worked well to contrast all the richness. Though I did have to manually relocate some of cold cuts since they were carelessly bunched together leaving a portion of the bread without any meat. I'd still totally prefer Alimento for a North Beach sandwich, but this was surprisingly decent for a local chain grocery store. Chicken Meatball Sub: So this one tasted like a grocery store sandwich. The chicken meatballs were spongier than regular meatballs and not as hearty. Also, the sandwich felt kinda small. Like smaller than other meatball subs in North Beach and also smaller than the SF Italian made here. It's a bold move to try to compete with meatballs in North Beach.

Poor quality burrito. Very small and cost $11. Soggy and somehow dry at the same time.

Really want to like the place but it's hard. I've frequently been disappointed by all of their prepared foods. Staff is friendly however the prices are insane even by today's standard. Quality off goods is hit or miss. This tiny burrito cost 11 dollars. It's soggy and dry at the same time. Also flavorless. The price wasn't listed on the item itself so I feel like I reluctantly paid for it at the check out. Stick to the packaged goods, possibly the butcher as well, and avoid their prepared food altogether.

This newest Luke's Local just opened in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach! Find this super cool grocery store on the corner of Columbus and Green streets. It has everything you can possibly want from grab-and-go items to everyday grocery staples. I get their sandwiches a lot when I'm on the go at their other locations in Coke Valley and on Union Street. Great places for morning coffee too :) I'm especially a fan of Luke's organic veggie and fruit selections, as well as their always fresh seafood and meats. This new location is very well stocked! If you're a tourist looking for a quick bite or aiming to stock up on food for your hotel or Airbnb, I guarantee you that this Luke's will meet your needs! Staff is really nice and pleasant too. Thank you to Luke's Local for supporting neighborhoods at a time when local grocery stores are disappearing and when we need them the most in San Francisco. Support local! TIP: Sign up for their rewards program.

In one incident over a year ago, another customer verbally harassed me and threatened physical harm while I was shopping. Her child was left unattended and was knocking items over, which I reported to security. The guard failed to do his job and did not intervene appropriately. When a supervisor arrived, the situation was handled much more professionally. I should feel safe shopping in my local market. That guard no longer works there, but the experience was upsetting and difficult to move past. Unfortunately, in January 2026, I encountered similar issues with a new security guard. He has repeatedly followed me around the store without cause. Most recently, he approached me unnecessarily, stood uncomfortably close, and spoke to me in an intrusive manner while I was selecting items. His behavior showed poor training and a lack of respect for personal boundaries. These repeated experiences with security staff are negatively affecting the atmosphere at Woodlands. I am a respectful, regular customer and do not want to feel uncomfortable or monitored without cause when shopping. Proper security training and professionalism are essential for customer safety and trust.

Some things are definitely more than you'll pay elsewhere (most of the crackers for example). Pasta and canned goods prices were okay; in general maybe a bit higher than some places but not too much so. For vegetables, they do have some nice deals and stuff you may not find elsewhere (heirloom tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, variety of fruit and different vegetables). I felt like the tomatoes alone were worth the trip (grape tomatoes for cheaper than I saw anywhere else, beautiful heirloom tomatoes at a decent price, and early girl tomatoes which can be hard to find in the winter [I haven't had them yet but they looked fresh]). There aren't a ton of options for the meat counter but they are all quality items and the prices show. For example, the only chicken they had was Mary's chicken. The cheese selection was great especially for a small store and they had some nice meat, olive and peppers (homemade?) options for charcuterie boards. They also sell premade meals. Probably not the place you should buy everything you need but it's a good supplemental option and there were some gems. I guess they have a few locations so I would be back to this one if I'm in the area and would also check out one of the other stores if convenient too.
