Luke's Local is a nice specialty grocery store to have in the North Beach neighborhood, especially when you quickly need something or want to grab a great selection of snacks for a picnic in the park. It's a small market packed with unique food options from all over the world. This review is specifically for a purchase of Kolsvart Swedish Fish candy--and they were absolutely delicious! However, the pricing across the store is undeniably high, especially for basic everyday ingredients. The biggest downside to the visit was the customer service. There was a long line that took a while to check out, and the staff was unfortunately not very friendly. It's a convenient neighborhood stop, but the high prices and slow, cold service drag it down. read more

I usually enjoy the one on Union Street. It's near my work and they make amazing sandwiches. Price isn't too bad either. I came to this location randomly while on a date night with my boyfriend. We stopped for snacks and I purchased the most delicious apple I've ever eaten. They were opal apples, amazing. It's small inside, but clean and concise. My only gripe with either location are the prices of some of the groceries. A bag of chips can be as much as $7 or $8. Just some randomly over priced things. They're still cool stores and I know I'll be back. read more

There a few places to shop for groceries in North Beach. Luke Local grocery on Green street offers lots of varieties of drinks and food. Luke Local has different locations across San Francisco. You can get fresh locally sourced seafood and fresh meat. They have a good selection of wines. When the bars outside gets crowded in North Beach and you want to brown bag it on the street during a street festival this would the place to grab that drink. When you want to go to Washington Square for a random picnic this would be the place to load and reload on the food and drinks. They also have fresh produce. You will find good desserts ( not deserts) inside. All around a good place to go for a liquor run or to grab some groceries in North Beach. Lots of goodies once you are at Luke Local indoor they are some import goods so check the prices because of the tariff war They have a good wine selection for the wine pour but make sure to look at the possible price increase of goods from offshore read more

This review is for Luke's Beet Salad with Bulgar Wheat and Toasted Chickpeas. Yes it's $15. I don't care. Beets, za'atar, radicchio, spinach, sultanas, cucumber, bulgar, red onions and toasted chickpeas in an amazing tahini dressing. Just phenomenal. I just got home after spending $54 on a small bag of groceries and I'm pretty mad because they mislabeled their prices and were rude when I pointed it out. I'm mad at myself for actually paying for this instead of leaving the groceries and walking out. Be sure to check the prices when they ring you up. Luke's Local charges premium prices (2X Trader Joe's) for supposedly a premium experience, which I'm totally cool with, but little things like mislabeling prices and trying to get away with it can really piss off regular customers. I almost never write negative reviews because I want to support local businesses but charging super premium prices and being rude about it is inexcusable. So here's the story - I wanted to buy some nice veggies for dinner and went to check out the produce section at Luke's since they tend to have nice stuff. Well - everything was quite pricey (Luke's wanted $12 for a bunch of asparagus which would have been $6 at TJ) but whoa - they had some nice romanesco for $3.99/lb in the same bin with the cauliflower. (Romanesco is a type of cauliflower). Since I was at Lukes, I picked up a few other fancy things including fresh pasta, fancy cat food, some Graffeo coffee, and dish soap, which brought the grand total to $54 - which again, I'm totally cool with the price. While ringing me up, the cashier had no idea what my romanesco was, so I told him it was $3.99/pound and pointed right at it (the produce counter is directly in front of the cash register). The sign clearly said $3.99 a pound for cauliflower and regular white cauliflower and romanesco were in the same bin. Perhaps I was overly helpful in saying that "it's a romanesco - it's a fancy cauliflower" - so I guess that's what did it because the computer said that romanesco was $5.99 a pound. WTF? A different cashier (a very rude woman) barged in and said that it's $5.99 a pound even though I was pointing right at the sign that says it's $3.99 with a several other romanesos still in the bin directly over the sign. She pointed to another sign on different shelf a few feet away for the zucchini that said romanesco was $5.99/pound. Well - that's really misleading and I'm mad that I actually paid for this. Yes, I'm writing a 1 star review because they ripped me off by $2 and were rude about it. read more

The coffee window here just sucks really bad. Some days they have coffee and some days they don't. Some days they say coffee order stops at 4. Today at 3:30 the person working the window said they already stopped making coffee when I showed up to order at 3:30. You need to be clear what the hours are to order stuff from this window. I love this little grocery store. It has a wide and interesting variety of products, lots of gourmet brands and organics, as well as fresh, frozen, and ready to go. A deli on the far right also offers sandwiches and other small meals to go. It's always busy but the staff is kind and helpful and fun. While it's a bit on the pricy side, I'm never disappointed in coming in here, whether it's to get a snack, find that one ingredient I'm missing, or discover a new sauce. read more

Cute little boutique grocery store. My favorite thing is the signature pastrami sandwich! The pastrami slices are a little thinner, which I prefer, and is contrasted by a delicious slaw. An excellent roast beef sandwich! The service has always been first rate and everyone is friendly and courteous.

It doesn't seem like they make too much in-house here, mainly featuring local brands and some fancy national brands. Though the sandwich counter was appealing since they were all made in-house, fresh to order. Had a mixed experience with one decent sandwich and one mediocre sandwich, hence the "OK" 3-star rating. SF Italian: Pretty much what I'd expect to find in North Beach. A bunch of fancy cold cuts, some provolone cheese and a slightly spicy kick on a fresh ciabatta roll. There was some arugula, but it actually worked well to contrast all the richness. Though I did have to manually relocate some of cold cuts since they were carelessly bunched together leaving a portion of the bread without any meat. I'd still totally prefer Alimento for a North Beach sandwich, but this was surprisingly decent for a local chain grocery store. Chicken Meatball Sub: So this one tasted like a grocery store sandwich. The chicken meatballs were spongier than regular meatballs and not as hearty. Also, the sandwich felt kinda small. Like smaller than other meatball subs in North Beach and also smaller than the SF Italian made here. It's a bold move to try to compete with meatballs in North Beach. read more

Really want to like the place but it's hard. I've frequently been disappointed by all of their prepared foods. Staff is friendly however the prices are insane even by today's standard. Quality off goods is hit or miss. This tiny burrito cost 11 dollars. It's soggy and dry at the same time. Also flavorless. The price wasn't listed on the item itself so I feel like I reluctantly paid for it at the check out. Stick to the packaged goods, possibly the butcher as well, and avoid their prepared food altogether. read more

My in-laws and Myself were looking for a quick bite and coffee. Walked into this small grocery store not one single greeting all we got was unpleasant stares as if we were there to shop lift groceries. I was walking with my little girl around the isles and checking out the store for anything that would seem appetizing for us out of no where a employee passes us by speed walking "checking" the aisles, stops & starts to talk to another co-worker , both stare at us and made us feel very uncomfortable. I can see why Luke's Local is so popular. Yes, things are pricey, but they are quality goods. I had the pleasure of winning a TGTG bag tonight. If I was a person who wanted gluten-free stuff, this place is it. But I would have to like a tiny spice. Today's haul included a smoothie. Spicy Korean tofu, vietnamese rice roll, gluten free brownie made in San Francisco, and gluten-free pasta. The pastries are half off at night (next to the cash register). I recognize the pastry was from a Berkeley pastry shop. I got an apricot pastry. I really scored tonight! I love San Francisco. Tourists were out and about. It's marathon Sunday. read more

I am heavily conflicted as I write this review. Came here just for groceries the other day and immediately thought this was one of those upscale grocery stores, like a Erewhon type ambiance. As I perused the aisles, the prices definitely confirmed my intuition. I ended up getting some beer and a cookie. The cookie was crazy expensive ($4) but was one of the best cookies I've ever had, and thus likes my conflict. As much as it hurt to pay $4 for a cookie, I strongly debated heading right back as soon as I finished it. Clean and well organized. Luke's Local took over what used to be a shared pop-up market place and before that a bank! Good to see this corner of North Beach getting much needed rejuvenation. The store is clean, the staff is nice, the prices are a little high (but it's SF). They have a small collection of goods, cheeses/wines, and a nice meat counter with deli stand for sandwich making. They are card only and will be accepting EBT in the coming weeks - which will be good as most of the lil old ladies of Chinatown who were perusing the store were sticker shocked (price wise and because the prices listed were too small for them to read). Though not sure if this place will survive since I'd probs walk down the street to Molinari's and get a sando from there instead or around the corner to grab some items at The Nature Shop (other local market). read more

Been making my lunch rounds in North Beach, decided to give this place a try thinking it would be a fast wait time given the takeout window. It took a while to get my trippy turkey and ice green tea. I was a little underwhelmed by the sandwich size for the price, but my coworker and felt it's probably the natural shape of the bread that determines the size of your sandwich so naturally a ciabatta or Dutch crunch would be bigger. It listed garlic mayo as an ingredient however I tasted a lot of horseradish. I like the sprouts but wish there were more. It was an okay lunch. read more

A cool little grocery in North Beach a block away from Washington Square. Went with a friend and ordered two banh mis (one tofu, one chicken) and I got a side of latkes with mine. The people working there are really friendly! We walked around the store while we waited for our sandwiches and Luke's had a good variety of pre-packaged/prepared foods! Since it was a nice day out, we took our sandwiches to eat at Washington Square. The chicken in the banh mi was very high quality. The sandwich itself was a little smaller than I was expecting, but it was still pretty filling! The veggies were tasty and I really loved the addition of avocado in the sandwich. My friend enjoyed her tofu banh mi as well. Not the "best" banh mi I've had in SF, but it was still pretty good! The potato latkes were yummy; not too greasy and I only wish I had a little sour cream or apple sauce to dip them in. Would love to come back to try other sandwiches! read more
