My son and I are always on the hunt for some good pho. Lulu's Gourmet didn't disappoint but it also didn't really impress. The place was clean and the atmosphere was inviting. But I feel like the broth was more bland than I'm use too. The customer service was great though. Unlike Stewart and Hol, my wife's and my expectations going to Lulu's Gourmet on 13600 Baltimore Ave. in Laurel, Maryland were the same. And those expectations were high, with both of us being fans of pho and both of us having been frequent patrons of the Pho Saigon 54 restaurant that previously occupied Lulu's Gourmet's location. Lulu's servings for the pho, even for takeout orders, are gargantuan, the same size as the barrage of snowballs Stewart playfully launches at Hol before he realizes that she is not enjoying Earth's Christmas holiday season as much as he does. While a tad salty, Lulu's pho tastes great so long as one orders extra noodles to dilute the saltiness. Upon both visits, my wife was disappointed to learn that Lulu's Gourmet did not have any of the Hong Kong Waffles available to purchase that they prominently advertise. On our second visit, she was even more disappointed to not get the strawberry banana cream trang mieng that I attempted to order. I perhaps made a mistake in not getting a receipt to know if we were charged for the dessert and another mistake in showing the manager what we wanted to order on my phone rather than reading our takeout order out loud. Being an optimist like Stewart, I would give Lulu's Gourmet 3.5 stars if that were possible; but, for the purpose of current records, it will have to be a 3. read more

I was actually heading for a place where I had seen a Coming Soon sign, but they were still under construction. Walking back to the car, I saw a sign for Bahn MI. I think there was a Vietnamese place there before. Drat! Out of bread for Bahn Mi. Just as well, since proper French bread has the shelf life of a may fly. Cute interior, order at the counter and they bring it to the table. So I decided on pho, which is the touchstone of Vietnamese food, rather than the rice or vermicelli selections. The broth was not as aromatic as I like, and had a hint of the telltale metallic finish of MSG. Too sweet as well, a shot of soy sauce balanced that. Likewise, the fresh squeezed lemonade required a pinch of salt. On the plus side, the beef was quite tasty, and the men's room was clean and odor free. We stopped by Lulu's Gourmet on a whim. For an appetizer, we had crispy rolls which were really good. We had beef pho and a beef noodle dish that was essentially the beef pho without the broth. I really enjoyed the pho, but the noodle dish was just okay. I also ordered the Thai boba, but they were out of tapioca and replaced it with jellies. I think the jellies were fruit flavored though and as a result the whole drink tasted funny. Stop by for the pho! read more

I'll also note this is a great item to order for takeout since they box the broth into its own container, the meat and noodles into another, and the jalapenos, sprouts, and basil leaves into a bag. The broth was nice and hot still by the time it got to our house and I was able to add the add-ons to my liking! For reference, I called ahead to order and they said it would be about 20 minutes. My husband and I keep coming back to Lulu's even though we moved, any time we're in the area we stop by to eat, their food is still delicious with great quality. The portions are great and they are consistent. The service is good and quick. The place looks great and there's enough room to eat in. I've been coming here for a few years now, and it's always delicious! Unfortunately this visit, the smell of the restaurant diminished my experience. It was very unpleasant and hard to avoid while eating. It was apparent that the restaurant was in need of a good, deep cleaning. My husband and I are vegetarian. That being said, we love Vietnamese food . We ordered the spring rolls, tofu veggie pho and the tofu bun. Each of our dishes had 3 pieces of tofu that were dry and tasted of freezer burn . The bun came with hoisin sauce. The spring rolls were filled with a strange flavorless starch along with a smidge of maybe cabbage? The dining room was dark and cramped. Most of the tables were not clean. One of my favorite places to eat in Laurel. Great selection, and she makes "Bahn Mi"! There are several spots that also advertise Bahn Mi. But after relentlessly trying to get it at those spots, I have found that most locations are out of supplies by lunch time. Lulu's Gourmet has a great menu and the food is always fresh and well portioned. It's a great spot to come to if your new to Vietnamese food, because LuLu is at the counter, speaks great English, and will make suggestions based upon your preferences. Another cool thing about Lulu's is when you look at the faces in the dining room, you will see people from all races and walks of life. Wonderful place we visited during a weekend trip. The bun for the bunh mi was perfect. Nicely flaky and very light. Grilled pork vermicelli was also very very good. Large quantities. Boba tea was also a great order. Bubbles were fresh and perfect texture. Visited twice over the weekend, and would have visited a third had not they been closed on Sundays. I found myself frantically googling near to many of the food items, for I didn't know what they were. I had had banh mi's before and LOVED them - so this decision, was a no brainer. The roll, for my pork bahn mi was massive, somewhat hard, very crunchy, a bit overwhelming and within, a scant portion of grilled marinated pork, a smattering of semi-crunchy, overly sweet, lacking pickled pungentness, absent of jalapenos - a huge disappointment of what was supposed to be a bahn mi. A tofu rice paper roll, hugely unforgettable - in the waste basket, it went. A mass of overly fried hard tofu, intermingled and bulgingly stuffed with too soft vermicelli noodles, messily wrapped; chaos. read more

The beef broth does taste good, but it would be perfect if you balance the broth flavor. Way too much cloves/star anise flavor over other spices. The spring rolls are too much lettuce, with very little noodles and the rice paper is too too soft!!! There are many rice paper brands. Unpleasant experience. Upon arriving I was a bit indecisive about which meat I wanted to choose from. The owner then suggested that I try the grilled beef. I made it clear that I wanted pho, however. To my understanding, I was going to receive pho with beef. Later, she came out with beef and noodles... (not what I wanted). I asked if there were any way that I could opt for pho instead, as she was unclear that the grilled beef would not be in the pho. She simply refused to make any accommodations. Throughout all my years, I have never experienced such terrible service. She didn't even try to compromise. Consequently, my friend offered to switch plates and I ate their pho instead. Overall, I won't be coming back. I suggest trying Pho nom nom in Rockville instead As far as the food, I've certainly had better. The pho is sweet and has a strange taste/ aroma to it. Their cart would be rolled to within inches of us and they would be scraping and rinsing dishes literally right next to us as we tried to eat our meal. I think this is family owned but I was craving pho one day and decided to check this place out. Food is ordered up front and then u sit in these tables that are spaced apart from one another due to covid. Employees are seen with masks on. (Thank goodness) A large pho Dac biet (combo) was a bit expensive at around 12$ if I remembered it to be. The soup was ok, kind of sweeter than usual. Meat portion was alright. But I still finished it. Banh mi combo- this was damn delicious even tho I believe there's a fried egg and honey ham ? The bread was fresh. I might come back for this Egg rolls- hot and fresh. Not too shabby. I think I will come back- maybe not for pho but try something else. read more
