We wanted to try a spot near the gym we went to and came across this place! It was very clean when we walked in, and the staff greeted us welcomely. The pho was really flavorful and it felt like the perfect meat to noodle ratio. My husband ran out of the noodle before the meat! When he went to go pay, I overheard the staff say that they took over this restaurant about a year ago which explains all the negative reviews previously. This is my favorite venue for beef pho soup, fried tofu, and salt and pepper shrimp. I have tried to get the same tastes and textures at other pho venues, but they just don't satisfy my taste buds the same. I have never been able to find the fried tofu as crispy and addictive!!! We found this place like two-ish months ago and we are now recognizable regulars. The staff is very nice and the food comes out quick. This pho place is delicious. The summer roll was rolled loosely and didn't have any pork (as listed on their menu). It wasn't awful. I enjoyed this over my main dish. 5.5/10 The rice is not broken (as listed on their menu), pork chop was dry and broccoli....? Not typical of Vietnamese rice plates. The broccoli was good though lol. What threw me off is there was no fish sauce. I asked for some and whatever they gave me was not the kind you eat rice plates with. This was my lunch place everyday for over a year. At some point my lunch time was cut short so I spoke to the owner who is super sweet and with a beautiful sense of fashion (yes she is awesome) and I would call her on my way to the restaurant and she would have my bowl of pho ready served perfect as I liked it for me to eat. I wanted to try a new Pho spot and ventured to Laurel to try Pho 89. First off, they serve Vietnamese and Chinese food and I believe it's run by the latter so I was a little concerned about the authenticity of the Pho. I ordered beef pho (chin and nam) which I had to repeat several times because the waitress didn't know what chin and nam was. Apparently you are supposed to order by letter and number and that option wasn't there. The Pho was just ok. The broth wasn't as flavorful as my usual spot and some of the meat was over cooked. The basil leaves were also not very fresh as they had a lot of black spots on them. I had to look very closely to find a few edible leaves. I also ordered fried chicken dumplings, which were absolutely delicious. I would come back just for the dumplings. I ordered a mango smoothie without bubbles but it was too milky for my taste so I left it untouched. The service was great, given that my friend and I were the only patrons around 7:00pm on a Saturday, which I found to be rather telling. Was in the area with a friend and starving so I decided to walk to Dunkin' Donuts to get some breakfast. As I was walking, I saw there was a Pho place so I tell myself "of course I'm going to have pho instead". I walk in and patiently wait to be seated. As I'm waiting for someone to keep me, I survey the room and notice there are about four different groups of people sitting two of those groups are individuals. The other tables look dirty and you can tell maybe someone had just got up but they hadn't been cleared yet. A gentleman ask me how many, I say one and he instructs me to sit at a table. Before I sit down, I look at the table and notice it's been cleared but still dirty. I instantly have the feeling to leave but because I don't have my car and I'm hungry I decide to just let him know that it's dirty. He comes right over and I inform him his dirty and no problem, he goes and gets away I can wipes it off. I watch as he cleans it and when he's finished I noticed it is still dirty. Some of what I see looks like it was in the finish of the table but the others I see is just maybe parsley flakes or whatever herbs that were sitting on the table still. Fresh bubble tea options here and for a decent price. I got mango and it was made from some kind of chunked purée that was blended instead of just a syrup or sauce, so that was a nice touch to me. The restaurant itself is small but quaint. Easy to find location. read more

Once upon a time... ...there was the cutest little pho shop with the nicest staff around. A Queen and King enjoyed it so much they brought the Princess and the Princess loved it. This was becoming the regular soup stop for the royal family as the pho broth was superior to many of its rivals in the Kingdom of Mary's Land. This is a great little Pho Cafe. I went for a late lunch one day so it wasn't that busy which was nice for me. It's very easy to find in a strip mall right off the main drag in Laurel MD. There is ample parking too. The decor is typical for a pho cafe: lots of asian memorabilia decorating the walls. There was plenty of room: both 2-4-6 seating tables. They had booth seating also which was nice. The place was very clean & had lots of natural light from the front & side windows. The staff was very pleasant, friendly, polite & efficient. They provide complimentary ice water as soon as you sit down. Each table also had fish sauce, siracha, & garlic chili sauce. I decided on a small pho with lean beef & flank steak. I ordered crispy spring rolls to start. They arrived piping hot with a side dish of sweet fish sauce. They were solidly good. The pho came out shortly after and it was delicious. Okay the spring rolls here are AWESOME. It's the texture of their rice paper I think that makes them so good. Less than $4 for two decent sized spring rolls. You can ask for the vegetarian version thats not on the menu and they'll replace the pork/shrimp with fried tofu. The pho is average but the prices are great and very affordable. read more

I went to visit this restaurant for the first time on March 15, 2018. I ordered Pho #9. The food came quick. The hostess what's very nice and kind. She really made me feel welcome and comfortable. She asked me what I wanted to eat my meal with... I didn't really know what I ordered, so I didn't know what to tell her. We found out about this place by chance encounter. The food is good but they lose a star because some of their employees aren't super friendly. We normally have A2 and B9. Now with the spring roles, it is an acquired taste, it took me 3 or 4 times of eating it to really enjoy it. The customer service was prompt. That part was quite alright. I will agree that the Summer rolls are large, but it was mostly lettuce and it was poorly wrapped. It was actually stuffed to the point the wrapping tore. Second ding is for the Bubble Tea. The tea is more like a slushy from 7-11 than Bubble Tea I have had at other Pho restaurants. Terrible for $3.50/per Tea. Big ice chunks, no tea or cream used at all. Just ice, more ice, flavor syrup and bubbles (tapioca pearls). I will not be stopping by again when in Laurel. read more

Recently, Uber Yelper Su K. added a 4th and crucial star to his review of Pho Saigon 54 sending my little head swimming because I haven't had any decent pho in ages. So we decided we would make a stop on our way home. Unfortunately.... I STOPPED AT THE WRONG DAMN RESTAURANT!! We were at Pho 89 NOT Pho Saigon 54... and alas, it was not a 4 Star experience. We ordered summer rolls. It's hard to mess up a summer roll and these weren't bad, just not great. Rice Stick vermicelli, shredded lettuce and the skimpiest offering of shrimp I've seen. I like a little mint or basil in my rolls. The dipping sauce consisted of Hoisin with chopped peanuts. Again, good, but not great. Sort of a cheap version of the real thing. For entrees, my dining partner in crime got the Bell Pepper Chicken in Black Bean Sauce. It was very good, studded with lots of sliced onion, bell peppers and a tasty black bean sauce. It's shame it came a full 10 minutes before my Pho. Clearly they were having a rough night with service. My Pho consisted of Eye of Round, Bible Tripe and Soft Tendon. The broth was good, but not full flavored. The meat add ins were good, but rather skimpy in portions. I also ordered a side of meatballs made with ground cartiledge, which I love, but these were a little strange in flavor. The Pho came with the requisite bean sprouts, basil, peppers and lime. No cilantro was offered and the tables are not equipped with dipping bowls. I'm a pho dipper...that is to say, I don't add Hoisin and Sriracha to my broth, I dip the bits and eat them. All in all, the place is decent. Very clean. Service while spotty was very friendly (We were served by the owner who relayed that she is having tough times economically, which could account for the skimpy portions of higher cost items and lack of other servers). Still... the next time I want Pho, I will pay a little more attention and head to Pho Saigon 54! read more

Remember when you ate something really GREAT for the first time? Like your first hot Krispy Kreme at 4 am? Or your first Café du Monde biegnet and chicory coffee next to a performing jazz saxaphonist? Or a hot, crusty, tart Frisco sourdough bread at the Wharf and salty ocean air? Or Tommy's chili burger dripping on a curb at Rampart at 2 am ? Spoiled for life. Well let me tell you a little story... At lunch time after working through a holiday morning on proposals, I wanted to try a new pho place and asked a colleague to join me to check it out.. "What's that?" "Vietnamese noodle soup. You like noodles?" "YESSSSSSS!!" About that instant another manager walked by and proudly announced to us he was treating everyone to a Subway and what did we want? Let's see here.....pho vs foot long.....foot long vs pho...I made my decision in 0.2 nanoseconds. I made eye contact with my colleague and I knew instantly that I had to tell the manager that we talked about having pho earlier. So I broke the soon becoming uncomfortable silence.... "We were planning to eat some hot noodle soup instead...so thanks for the offer." He shrugged and said "OK" and away he went...and away we went with a MapQuest printout. Pho 89 is situated on the south side of the street and in the front of a very large outdoor strip mall. At noon, the parking lot was nearly empty.....and peering in the restaurant..it was open but empty too. "Ut oh...." I silently thought..."I hope this place isn't worse than what the Yelp reviews stated and maybe because it is the day after Christmas" But too late to change restaurants now....so in we went. Immediately upon entering the restaurant, I was immediately enveloped with that very medicinal, pungent, slightly sweet Oriental aroma of burning incense. I had this vague vision of entering an opium den.... or ......my old college dormitory! That's where I last smelled this scent! The aroma was strong but not obnoxious, so we sat down. Scanning down the menu reminded me of reading the glossary of Gray's Anatomy...tripe, tendons...etc. My colleague leaning towards the semi cautious side in this new environment, settled on a large flank steak pho. I having had a Hardee Pork Chop and Gravy Biscuit a couple hours earlier and semi hungry...settled on a large flank steak and tendon pho anyways. After awhile out came the plate of bean spouts, green chile slices, Thai basil, lime with the Sriracha rooster bottle on the table. I then proceeded to explain the ritual of eating pho. After a few more minutes, out came the pho. The rice noodles were clumped together like a string ball in the middle of the bowl, so we took some time untangling the wad of noodles with our chopsticks and then did the finishing assembly of the pho. All the while, I kept waiting, glancing frequently across the table for that first taste... Then...when the first chopstick full of noodles hit the palate...a broad smile broke across my colleague's face. As I looked down to eat my pho...I heard from across the table.... "THIS IS GREAT!!!" Success. But what about my pho? 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. The taste of the broth was excellent, 4 to 5 star category. It was clear, not greasy and had all the right subtle balance of flavors. However the portions were very meager. Even if I had two bowls of pho, the double meat portions would have still been tiny. The noodle portions were also small for pho and heck... pho noodles portions are generally on the small size anyways. During my next return visit (I will definately be coming back) I will try to get extra large portions. The service was professional, friendly, but slow. There was only one other occupied table in the restaurant yet they took their time. Today it didn't matter because I had great company, but if I was here for a quick meal between projects, I might have dinged them another star. But today wasn't about eating. It was about dining. It was about mentoring and ushering the uninitiated into an unexplored segment of the culinary universe. Seeing one of those few moments in a lifetime experiences was just a joy to watch.. Good, clean pho, but not the best. When we first noticed the Pho 89 Coming Soon sign in the window, my wife and I rejoiced at the thought that a pho restaurant would be so close to home. So pho king a, we went on opening day and it was a good bowl of pho, which was surprising b/c pho restaurants usually take a while to get their broth right. I like this place for the following reasons: - the owner-lady is really nice and will make you feel as if you were dining at your Vietnamese-cousin-you-never-knew's house. And we see her at Tar-jay from time to time and anyone who shops at Tar-jay is a-ok in my book. - the pho is tasty - they have a pretty extensive menu. Though I haven't tried anything else, I've ogled other people's food. - the restaurant is clean and spacious (good for groups) So why do I choose to go elsewhere? One of the good things about pho is that when you are insanely hungry--a condition I find myself in far too frequently to be good for me--pho can be faster than McDonald's. I'm not sure what it is, but Pho 89 takes their sweet time with their pho. So last time I went, I timed it and it took about 15 minutes from ordering to seasoning my broth with hoison. Impatient? Maybe. But I mean this ain't Five Guys where they cook it fresh; the broth was probably there since last night. If you are in the Laurel area on a rainy and/or cold day, this is a solid bet for tasty pho, just make sure you're not too hungry. As soon as they put down fresh sprouts, jalapenos, lime, and basil I was in. I could eat those 4 with out the rest. The night before, I went to Panda Express and really did not get my craving for Asian food quenched because it just was not any good. I went to Pho 89 a few hours ago and the food was amazing for the price point. The pho was so good that I said, "Yes, I must have been Asian in a past life - I know it!!" I really appreciated the fresh ingredients and side dish (included what looked to be basil, bean sprouts, lime, and some sort of chili pepper). There were fresh green onions in the soup as well as something that resembled parsley, giving the soup a nice, fresh look and aroma. The spring rolls were freshly made as well. 3 stars for the service. 0 stars for food. Here's why...... My friend and I went there last night right before they closed and we were punished for it. I ordered chicken vermicelli and she ordered vegetarian pho. They said they "normally don't have vegetarian but they can make it". They must have created a monster. First of all their summer rolls were HOT! Did they put it in the microwave? Maybe they confused summer rolls with spring rolls and accidentally put it in the deep fryer for a swim. The pho broth itself tasted OK (I'm being generous) but both my friend and I got really sick. I'll spare everyone the details but it was a rough night for both of us and we ALWAYS eat pho it's our go to choice. Never again...on a plus the service was great. We never had to ask for more water they just kept it coming as if to hydrate us for the LONG NIGHT ahead.......... The verdict..... I don't think I will ever return. read more
