They were helpful in making a mocha without espresso and with oat milk so we could have a vegan version of hot chocolate. Unfortunately there's not much in options for vegan baked goods and the cupcakes tasted old and dry and we couldn't finish them. I would suggest they expand and work on their vegan baked items. read more

I do regret having to put a review like this up but I'm going to be honest... In the 70s I came to Salem and had my first Whoopie pie. My mother enjoyed it so much she found the recipe and for the rest of my childhood, she made the best Whoopie pies at home. I grew and moved around the country and found this confection to be one of my favorites. While living in Pennsylvania for over 20 years, I enjoyed many Amish bakery, fresh Whoopie pies, and... Embarrassingly. I will say I have eaten many many many store-bought Whoopie pies too. I returned to Salem this last week with family who had never had a New England Whoopie pie. Very excited to show them Salem and hopefully find a very good Whoopie pie as I had done 45 years ago. Waiting to the last minute this bakery was the only place I saw, and I purchased 4... Overly sized and overpriced pies. Excited to share with my family. When we returned to our Airbnb, I was astonished to see that the cake was not soft, chewy and moist but... A lot more like a simple brownie. The yummy marshmallow innards was also very lacking. My family, seeing I was quite upset told me to reach out to the bakery. Luckily, returning to Salem at that exact spot... We had tried to go to the pirate place the day before and it been closed... I addressed the issue with... The actual baker it seems! She told me that she had won awards with her Whoopie pies recipe. Also admitting that she was from West Virginia I thought maybe there was a variation of my wonderful Whoopie pie recipe that I did not know about from this small state. I was wrong! This is the worst Whoopie pies ever had in my life. It is not a Whoopie pie! I will give the baker/owner credit for giving me a refund since each of these over sized over priced, desserts was $7 apiece. And lastly, it seems all their employees are not the best people to choose for Customer Service. They are awkward and don't seem to know how to deal with customers. read more

The oatmeal cookie pie was the only edible thing that we ordered. The cupcakes were dry as a bone and I don't think them not being "room temperature" could fix it. Both the vegan and non vegan cupcakes were horrid and completely not worth the price. The "cheesecake" featured enormous chunks of cream cheese that rendered it inedible. Don't even get me started on the stench in the bathroom. Very disappointing, definitely skip this spot. read more

Lulu's is truly a gem. The atmosphere alone is worth coming back to - walking in, it almost felt like visiting the home of an old friend. We were greeted with smiles and employees / owners eager to share their creations with us. And they did! This particular day they had free chocolate cake to give to each customer. I asked if there was a celebration or a milestone; the response I got was "nope, we just like to have fun here!" This was certainly a first for me, and I was thrilled to have a slice. It's a cliche line to say "I wanted to get everything" but this was really one of those places where that phrase holds true. Everything from their croissants, to tarts, to whoopie pies looked perfect and delicious. We opted for their bourbon pecan tart and their pain au chocolat - both fantastic choices. I can't wait to come back and try more of their baked goods. To the owners and employees, thank you for making my wife and I feel like we were friends of the restaurant despite it being our first time there. You guys rock. read more

I take no pleasure in writing this review, but there are some places that just shouldn't be in business. This is one of them. I went there one morning to get a latte and a snack. I should have known from the beginning I was going to have a bad time, because they only had one cashier working even though there was a line forming. The cashier in question spent at least 10 minutes just on one customer who was getting a lot of pastries, just repeating the customers order back over and over again (omg write it down if you're having trouble how is this hard - or at least call someone up to work the other register) meanwhile the line was building up to the point where it extended out the door and the cashier seemed to have zero regard whatsoever for those of us that were waiting. It was obvious the cashier did NOT care that the line was building up. When I finally did get up to a cashier, I had to repeat my order to him twice and he still got it wrong (got me a large latte instead of a small). I also grabbed one of the veggie roll things bc I was hungry af. After waiting an inappropriately long time for the latte, I get in my car to eat the veggie roll, and I was shocked by how bad it tasted. The bread was dry, stale, and gross and seemed "off" to me. I was so hungry I was going to choke it down anyway, but decided to wait until I got home. When I got home and unwrapped the plastic off of it, I immediately noticed that it was FREAKING MOLDY!! (See photo) Yes seriously, which is probably one of the reasons why it tasted so bad. They don't keep the rolls in any kind of refrigeration - they're just sitting in baskets all day getting stale. When we went back and told them about the moldy roll, they gave us a consolation cupcake that was dry and gross. This place shouldn't be in business at all and should be replaced by a legitimate establishment that will actually serve the community. I tried LuLu's twice during my Salem stay. During my first visit, I tried a breakfast sandwich (making my own- two fried eggs, ham, and avocado on rye.). I would suggest paying close attention to the menu, as they offer a half sandwich or full sandwich option. During my second visit, I tried the "turkey avocado." I enjoyed my second visit the most. The chipotle dressing that was paired with my sandwich offered a lot of flavor. The arugula was refreshing. I didn't try any of their baked goods but they smelled and looked amazing! As for parking, some parking is offered on the street. The location of LuLu's is perfect for downtown sight seeing and shopping in Salem. The staff I encounter during my two visits were very nice and patient! In addition, the doors open up on the right side of the shop so for those that visit, you can sit inside but enjoy an outside view as well. read more

The bakery had potential. We ordered breakfast for 5 of us. No one ended up eating very much of their food, and we ended up leaving to go find another place to eat. Food took a long time to come out; when it did it was cold. Avocado toast, bread seemed stale, was hard to cut and the guacamole was very bland. The side of egg we got was rubbery, cold and way over cooked. Biscuits and gravy.. how can biscuits soaked in gravy still be dry. Save yourself and skip this place. We found this cute bakery on the corner. The location is perfect and cozy on the inside. But the deserts were not as comforting. We purchased a small cheesecake, cinnamon roll and a snickerdoodle cookie. The cookie was so hard you couldn't eat it, the cheesecake was very bland and the cinnamon roll was given to us almost frozen. We asked to heat the cinnamon roll up and she said "ah ok?". I'm not sure who eats cinnamon rolls cold. But even heated up it was not worth the hype. read more

I have been dying to try this place. Because they have bakery pizza. My husband picked me up 2 slices. $6 each! So old and dry the crust crumbled when I took a bite. Worst bakery pizza I ever had! A cute little bakery on the outside. We walked in, ordered 3 whoopie pies, a coffee, hot cocoa and a tea. Cocoa was horrible and so was the coffee. I lucked out and enjoyed my cup of tea . let's begin at the end - quietly perfect. I was in town for a long weekend/getaway, staying in a hotel a few blocks from Lulu's. I went in for morning coffee. Me and the family went back several times over the next two days, and stopped for one last breakfast before heading out. It was great. Calm, quiet, subdued vibe. Friendly, welcoming service. Clean. Great selection of food, both cooked to order (e.g., egg sandwiches) and pastries. For those limited to gluten free products, it was fantastic. Ordered two lattes: one cold one iced both with oat milk and pumpkin syrup. Terrible for the $14. I saw them make it and they filled the cups up to the top with oat milk first. I thought they couldn't have been mine cause there was no room for the espresso but they were. The incredibly tiny amount of espresso they put in even spilled over the cup and then they stirred it together and it had hardly changed any color. Disappointed- it felt like I was just drinking pumpkin flavored oat milk. Maybe their other stuff is good but don't opt for the lattes unless you're willing to pay extra on top of the $6 latte for more espresso. Starbucks is cheaper and better. read more

It was odd that they charged for tap water (it's even on the menu). Seems like the kind of a thing a coffee shop would offer to their patrons who just spent $20 on a breakfast. When I asked the owner why they did that I was met with a lot of odd responses and a lengthy chat about cost of time (which was likely longer than it would have taken to just pour the water). This great bakery just opened in the building across from Bambolina's and it's a wonderful addition to the foodie options downtown. We tried their egg sammies on sourdough. They were made with super fresh ingredients: crispy bacon, fried egg, cheddar, greens, and tomato on fresh baked crusty sourdough bread. We also had their super rich butter biscuits with sides of jam and honey. They were fluffy, moist (sorry), and buttery AF (in the best way). Chocolate chip cookies here are bonkers good with dark-ish chocolate and a perfect combination of that flour-y bakery cookie and lots of butter giving them a fluffy inside and crispy outside- these are a must try. I took a bite of one to try it and ended up eating the whole thing even though I was stuffed. Worth a visit! You won't be disappointed! read more

Good little spot after walking all day in Salem. They have a good selection of treats...with prices that are OK considering that you are , Afterall , in a touristy village. The cakes, pastries and cookies were good ...and the coffees were also good...my family was happy. They also have large restrooms which is good if you have a baby in a stroller and need to enter to change/clean them. Service is super friendly and full of smiles..but try to pick up the speed of service. Tried this place several times over the past year, but gave up. Owner is VERY rude, staff is inattentive and unhelpful. Food is abnormally dry, uninteresting and sometimes moldy. ( I'm not kidding, I've twice found mold on my food.) I'm not sure I understand why this woman opened a bakery - she seems to hate people and she's not even a decent baker. I'm sure they make great money because of the tourists. I sometimes wish there could be a sign out front to warn tourists: TOURIST TRAP! GO TO A & J KING INSTEAD!
