We were here a couple weeks ago for the "Crazy Bones" premiere, and everything was just perfect! The event turned out great. There was a huge turn-out so I understand what other reviewers were saying about the lobby being small --BUT! That kind of added to the fun-- being packed like sardines in a lobby where everyone was excited to see this movie. Everything for the event was set up nicely. The marquee, the themed drinks -- "gummy bear martinis" just like the characters had in the movie -- and the red carpet outside. It was all extremely fun and festive. Even if the lobby was crowded there were spaces to mill around outside -- and everyone got popcorn and a drink before we went in, which was also nice and done well. (It was well organized and smooth sailing to get our treats.) The theatre itself was comfortable (old-school as others have said) -- and although some people in other reviews mentioned "small seats" they seemed fine. We're by no means "small" (5'7" and 6') and the seats were plenty big for us. They're just not the ginormous recliners that you sometimes find at the cookie-cutter places. The screen was great and we enjoyed our view of the never-before-seen "Crazy Bones" 80s-style slasher movie. As the mom of one of the actors, I had to close my eyes before she "died" -- but other than that, this was an amazing, happy celebration that I know we'll all remember forever. Afterward there was a Q&A with the actors which was also set up nicely and a lot of fun. We truly enjoyed the event and would recommend it to others, no hesitation, for their special events. And of course I wish I lived closer than 4 hours away, or else I'd come see movies here all the time. Five stars for sure! read more

This place is disappointing. Whenever I go, there seems to be only one person selling the tickets and running over doing concessions too. The man selling tickets today was most unfriendly. I smiled, and said "Hello," and it wasn't returned. I didn't buy concessions, because he couldn't be bothered. Another time I was there, they had children behind the concession stand helping. It's a shame that this place is tired, unfriendly, and in need of staff and repairs, but they have great independent movies tho. read more

Really enjoyed going to these old independent theaters. They have the old great Hollywood vibe. Parking can be complex since I don't see parking lot, there are street parkings, and couple block away, there is a pay parking lot. Old style with funky decors that just make you smile and reminded oui of good old 80s-90s. Reasonable price (I went to early showing) and prices for the snacks are quite cheaper then I thought, and they do have several oldie goodies so yea. The place is clean and spacious, the chairs are comfy airy and nice. Great for keeping it the oldies, goodies style, great services overall and can't wait to come back to see more great films & support the place. read more

Los Angeles: the city credited for the birth and current home of films, television and movie theaters (although Warner Brothers actually started in Youngstown, Ohio where I was born and raised and opened one of the oldest theaters in the country there but I digress). Although the city has plenty of modern movie houses; the best remains to be those still standing from the golden era of Hollywood rich with history. One of these movie theaters with a rich historical tapestry is the Lumiere Cinema which I recently experienced for the first time while attending the Made in Hungary Film Festival. The Lumiere Cinema sits on Wilshire Blvd near the Doheny intersection of Beverly Hills first opening in 1936 under the moniker Elite Theatre with three screens homing 824 seats total and was one of the first initial six theaters with RCA Sound installed. Lumiere had a brief resume as a music hall theatre (an interactive show comparable to vaudeville) before returning to its film roots. My favorite fact? In the 50s, Lumiere was the home to KLAC TV and "Life with Elizabeth" starring the legendary icon Betty White: YES, 'THE' BETTY WHITE! Another noteworthy show recorded on premises? NBC's The Liberace Show. In the 70s, Lumiere transitioned into an art house running art independent films which led to its acquisition in 1974 under the Laemmle umbrella. Laemmle decided to close Lumiere in 2019 but three Laemmle employees stepped forward taking over to keep the epic movie house alive which is where we stand today as Lumiere focuses on featuring independent and art house films that don't always receive mass distribution; alongside film festivals and events. There is more history in the Lumiere origin story but I am assuming you are here for a review and not a school lesson. My boyfriend and I have never been to Lumiere before we attended the Made in Hungary film festival to view the first two episodes of the "Rise of the Raven" historical entertainment drama that will be streamed in the US shortly. We were both in awe of the immediate old school charm of the premises and the obvious history that radiates through the pores of the construction. The lobby of Lumiere is small and reminds of a stage theatre house with a concession stand straight ahead with one screen room to the left and two to the right. Staircases lead upstairs with bathrooms, dressing rooms and projection rooms with old framed movie posters from the Hollywood hey day gracing the walls. The screening room in which we watched "Rise of the Raven" was relatively small but the seats were surprisingly plush and the red velvet interior added to the historical feel. I am not going to lie that Lumiere is modern: it isn't. By some accounts, it is almost tragically outdated and yet that is the magic of Lumiere: it holds onto REAL Hollywood and the energy and enchantment surrounds you during the entirety of your visit. Don't fret that the screen or sound system is poor: Lumiere is perfectly up to date in that regard. The concession stand at Lumiere offers stand movie theater fare (popcorn, candy, nachos, soda etc) with lovely personable staff who don't just serve you; but make jokes and hold a conversation. My boyfriend's main obsession was their extensive selection of self-serve popcorn spices and seasonings you can douse your popcorn with: you name it, they have it including ethnic spices! What a cool concept! Lumiere also caters to the nearby Jewish community with an emphasis on kosher food laws. Note: Lumiere doesn't have a dedicated parking lot so give yourself time to find a meter or parking garage. Movie houses and theaters have come and gone in Los Angeles so those left stand are to be cherished and Lumiere is no exception with its flourished history and devotion to current art and independent films/events. Anyone and everyone with a respect for old Hollywood or film should attend Lumiere at least once. read more

Been attending movies at this theatre for years. Even when it was a Laemmle's way back when. The Lumiere shows films that would never screen at the bigger chain theaters (AMC, Cinemark, etc). And, the venue itself is rather iconic for diehard moviegoers. During the weekday, there's probably only one employee doing ticket sales and concessions. So, be patient. During the weekend, there's more customers and more staff on hand. read more

I came here to see the new Jeff Buckley documentary on 9/20. The guy working the front was the biggest jerk, so unkind, so unwelcoming, just seemed like he was in the worst mood. I walked up and waited about 3 minutes while he stared at the computer with his back to me, then finally turned around. Not a hello, not a hey, no big deal. Ok. I said "I have a ticket for the 2:10pm", showed him my phone he scanned it then opened the door. Still not a word from him just cold. I'm in the lobby looking at the concessions, waiting, and there is no one behind the concessions...so I just wait patiently. I figured oh, maybe someone is cleaning out a theater that just got out, or maybe getting something from stock, no biggie, im pretty patient person. After no one else shows up who I think works here he finally after about 5 minutes peeks his head out and says "uhhh are you wanting to get something or what?" And I said "oh I'm sorry, I didnt realize that you also were the one doing concessions" (again, first time here) and he goes "uh, yeah im the only one working" (as if I'm supposed to telepathicly know this) as he walks around the counter and I was like oh, "ok I didnt know if it was like self serve" (making a joke) to which he goes "what do you want?" Completely kurt. And I was like "Whoa, no no no im good, what is your problem?" He proceeds to just walk back to the front and I asked him for his name...he ignored me. I said "I dont know what your problem is dude, but you could have said back when you checked my ticket, 'by the way im the only person working so if you need any concessions just holler.' I have never been here before, I dont know if there's someone else in here, like what the hell!?" He looked at me and said "enjoy the show." And I was like "right dude." I was literally the only person in the theater...and ended up being 1 of 4. It really was a damper on the experience of an otherwise great documentary. I will however be not coming back to this place, not if im going to be met with rude, unkind employees with bad attitudes who lack customer service and just overall people skills. All of it was absolutely unnecessary and felt like a trauma dump of not wanting to either be there/work there but just to belittle patrons all for not knowing what you could have absolutely communicated up front. I had to walk out the theater. The quality in theater #2 was terrible. There were stains on the screen and the bottom had visible black spots. I get a better experience watching it at home on my cheap TV. I have never been to a movie theater with this terrible projection. The week before, I had to cancel my tickets because of an unexpected meeting that I was scheduled for. When I called over the phone, I was told that people like me are the reason why they were considering making tickets final sale. They said my refund was a one time thing. I really use to love this theater and its "older" charm, but it seems like a struggle now. The line was for a 1:30 showing and the doors were locked and no employees present. I think a staff member showed up at 1:35 and was running tickets/door/concession all on his own. I don't like to talk about interactions that aren't directly affecting me, but he seemed quite peeved with questions from some of the guests. Still love the theater, just needs a good upgrade and apparently more staff. read more

Just saw Lurker last night (9/15) & what a great time! Unfortunately that's the only plus I had from my evening. As I arrived to the ticket booth, the man behind the desk seemed uninterested. I was met with a blank stare, no hello how are you, nothing. The staff don't seem to enjoy working here it seems like. When in the theatre, there were only about 8 people watching the film. The entire left side of the theatre (consisting of four men) kept talking and using their phones throughout the entire film. No staff members came to check how everything was going. The integrity of films is not respected at this establishment... Please save your money & go elsewhere. read more

Arrived at a show that was to start at noon about 13 minutes before showtime. We waited until an employee showed up about 3 minutes before noon. We then waited another few minutes and were greeted with "you can stand out there all day if you want" in an angry tone. There were no concessions and the theater air was as rank as the employee's attitude. I can't emphasize enough how rude he was so we got a refund. It's a shame as I would love to support local art house cinemas, but will never again visit this place given the rudeness and experience. read more

Had a good time here. Run by good people who care about movies. Great t-shirt designs but I'm looking for tees with more color and pop. The previews weren't long and it was fine by me the sound was low before the actual movie started. They provide a ton of seasoning for your popcorn. The snack concessions choices seem a bit strange. I think the thing that makes the Lumiere Music Hall my go-to theater is that in spite of being located in the heart of Beverly Hills it has a very young, hip college campus vibe about it that's very welcoming and friendly. No AMC bots found here. The theater loses a star because the men's room had one toilet stall that was broken and the lights over the operating stall were out, which poses a safety hazard. I also thought that Theater #3 was laid out wrong; while there were aisles to the left and right, there was no center aisle for emergency evacuation. In spite of these flaws this is still a very fun theater. Friendly tip: Films can change after every screening so check with Fandango to get correct showtimes (not imDB). read more

In response to management, I did hear back from the theater and they did share the footage. I am still waiting to hear from the police but in any case, it doesn't really matter. Nothing will come of this, there will be no vindication. I can't fault the theater for who walks in their theater but i also can't dismiss that their employees' reaction to what I had experienced completely lacked sympathy or understanding. They don't get gold stars for running after a man that was publicly masturbating in their building. But anyway, this is a cautionary tale for women and others to avoid going to theaters alone (even if you are just watching a documentary). read more

Lumiere had a film listed on a Monday at 8 p.m. I checked on Saturday. I came down from Lancaster. And after I got to Beverly Hills, I learned that what Lumiere was in actuality showing in theatres that day was not showings listed online. On another occasion, a staff member said, "We're pretty cheap all the time." Their tickets are $14.50 each. A different encounter/visit didn't have any issues. read more

You will need to call the theater to make sure their projector works before heading over. I went here a couple months back to catch a screening of "Caligula", and for the first time in my life the movie couldn't start. Meaning: the movie literally would not play. Some sound came out of the speakers, but there were no visuals. A couple behind me said that it was the first time it had ever happened to them too, a movie just not being able to start. We were all in shock. Leading up to the bad news, we all sat through four 10 minute intervals just waiting for the projector to light up. It was chalked up to a faulty "flair". We were refunded our tickets and headed out into the night, salty, disappointed and reeling from the absurdity of what we'd experienced. It was a 40 minute drive just getting to the theater for me. While the theater itself was clean and unassuming the guy working the counter was super rude. We got there early for a 12pm showing and went to the lobby for snacks and popcorn. No one was behind the concession counter we I went back to ask him if could buy popcorn. In the snottiest voice he said " yeah you can buy some when it pops" without even looking up from his phone. Went here for the Shock a Go Go Festival on 6/7. Super excited to see a range of cheesy 80's horror flicks. Unfortunately the cinema and staff really put a damper on my enjoyment. Starting with the staff literally standing right in front of the stars doing the Q&A's so that the audience couldn't see a thing, for EVERY Q&A. There were flashlights going off in the projection booth that were extremely distracting. Also, unfortunately they do not enforce a no talking rule, in fact, members of the staff were going up to each other to have loud conversations in the middle of the movies. Overall the movies were fun but the production was shoddy and obviously just a way for staff to fan boy and get their own autographs instead of being at the concession stand for those who wanted to buy snacks. read more

The Music Hall is a rare gem. Great programming although the screening rooms remind you of an old sticky porno theater. The screening room I was in was in the same dilapidated condition from 3 years ago!! (torn drapery, marks on the screen, but comfortable seating ) It has its charm. Parking is a challenge weekdays and the garage nearby is expensive. Support your independent cinemas before they are all gone !! Had a better experience this time. They seemed to have gotten some fancy chocolate bars and the soda was a great deal, albeit flat. One of the owners was there maybe. Staff just isn't so charming. But maybe that's not important. The selection of the movies is great and they have a lot of different movies playing throughout the day. And the price is right. I want this place to succeed. Maybe down the road they can spruce up the lobby.. in a classic way befitting the old building. I will continue to go and promote this place! Please go! This was our first time coming to this theatre and it was nice. The motivation was being able to see Ma Rainey's Black Bottom! It was a very good movie! The ticket prices were $14 and because of the reopening, the popcorn is from $1-3. Same goes for the soda. Had a good time, friendly staff. read more

I was visiting from out of town and caught a friend's indie horror film that was playing here. The staff member working during matinee hours was really cool, friendly and helpful. Noticed they seem to have a good rapport with afternoon attendees who might be regulars there. Struck me as a genuine place. The popcorn is the most reasonably priced of any movie theater I've ever been to in my life and also purchased a snazzy graphic tee which I will show off to my fellow cinephile friends. Big fan of the Laemmle theaters which I think Lumiere shares some of its pedigree. Definitely my kind of moviehouse and will check out what they're up to next time I visit LA. read more

On a weekday morning, I was deciding whether to see a movie at this theater - or wait til I could stream it a few days later (the following Friday). My calculus was simple: Because I feel like I have a moral and cultural imperative to support LA movie theaters, especially the small ones that support independent cinema, I decided to take the long drive to see a movie at this theater rather than wait a few days to stream it from the comfort of my home. I made the wrong choice. I'd have thought that independent theaters would do all that they could to attract the movie-going public, especially fans of independent movies. I was wrong about that, too. Although in late June 2022 no restaurants, gyms, airlines, etc. require you to wear a mask, and although Landmark, Laemmle, and AMC don't require masks, at this theater, in late June 2022, you must wear a mask - even if you're quadruple vaccinated, as I am, and even if you offer to show your vaccination record to the theater, as I did. Mind you, during the weekday matinee that I saw at this theater, there were only 3 other people in the entire theater - which seats 125+ people. But in spite of all of that, at this theater, you must wear a mask, regardless of your vaccination status. My "personal best" is seeing five first-run movies in a theater in a single weekend. And 90% of the movies that I see are at Landmark and Laemmle. But since this theater chooses to require masks even of its quadruple-vaccinated patrons, which of course is its prerogative, I will now choose to not see another movie at this theater during my sometimes five-movies-a-weekend outings, which is my prerogative. read more

This theater doesn't deserve all the bad reviews, but there are some discrepancies to be discussed before visiting. I can't imagine parking there on a weekend, as it seems there is no street parking and the lot available does charge fairly high for parking...So there's not NO parking but it's a parking lot option so you would have to pay on weekends. However, if you go on a weeknight after 7pm then street parking is free and there is ample. The theater itself is nice enough and the staff were helpful and at least somewhat engaged when I said I'd never been to the theater before. Another note: We also ordered our tickets the day before and the day of the movie changed what theater it was playing in but it didn't correct when they printed our physical tickets so we went into the wrong numbered theater. The staff found us and took us to the right theater though! I wish the theater knew this happened so maybe they could fix it! The theater itself is old and worn down but I've been in AMCs that are dirtier (Looking at you, Burbank AMC 16). When we were watching the movie it didn't feel too dirty to me. I hope more people visit this theater because tiny theaters like this deserve a chance. Their film selection is pretty cool, too! As for the screens, two are small, one is large. The movie we watched was on the large screen, and it looked great. The smaller screens are pretty small though and the chairs don't slope down, so if it's a full house I can imagine it might be hard to see. Otherwise, I still think it's worth seeing movies there on the smaller screens too. It's just a different experience than what people are used to now. read more

On Thursday, my friend and I swung by to catch a 10pm showing of a French indie film. Wouldn't you know it, we came on the one day the film wasn't showing at 10pm. The gentleman at the box office apologized and said that another movie on a different screen hadn't attracted any audience that night, and he could start a screening of our French film in that theater for us. I mean, if that's not A+ customer service, what is? I love the well-curated global selection of films they have to offer, and the reasonably priced concessions are very nice, too. Having lost Arclight to the pandemic, it seemed like the only movie options in LA were giant corporate filmhouses that show 30 minutes of commercials before each movie. I am incredibly grateful for everything Lumiere Music Hall has to provide. This is LA's best kept secret, and I will certainly be back many times. read more

I enjoyed seeing movies here when it was still part of Laemmle, but it seems to be quite poorly managed now. We will not be returning to this theater. We arrived 15 minutes early for a 12PM showing on a Sunday. The theater hadn't opened yet, and a small crowd was starting to form outside. An employee didn't show up until after 12PM. No apology or acknowledgment of the delay was given. There were no concessions. The movie started late. The theater itself is really starting to show its age. Overall atmosphere is not particularly pleasant. As eager as I am to support a local, independent theater showing independent films, this is too much. What a disappointment after not having been to a movie theater in over a year! read more

I love this theatre. It's not fancy, it's not fussy, it's not playing the latest greatest sequel to a Blockbuster (in 3D). No, it's playing good movies and some that you might have trouble finding in the multi-plex. Plus, their popcorn was pretty tasty. (OK, I wish their bottled water wasn't so expensive, but I know they need to make the coin wherever they can) Over the years, I've seen a handful of movies here and it's always been positive experience. The movie runs smoothly and there's not a ton of ads. (Or maybe I've just been timing it so that I miss all the pre-show stuff.) I've also seen a few screenings here, too, and those have been nice. It's a great venue for indie filmmakers and other content providers to show their stuff, have a little shindig, too. Been to two of those in the last six weeks. I'm very glad the Music Hall exists. it's charming and has a welcoming feel. It's in pretty good shape, and I look forward to going back soon. read more
