I can't lie, I was hesitant to stop by Luna Downtown for lunch. Mexican food and Grand Rapids , MI do not seem like they go together, but it wasn't that bad. It wasn't bad at all, to be fair. The outside looks really pain and simple, but it drew us in for a work lunch. We ordered the elote to share, it was good but less aioli and cheese would have been ideal. And I opted for the Carne à la Sonora, which was good, but the meet was overcooked for medium. The server shared they sous vide the skewers, then finish it off before serving. There was no pink, but it was tender, but dry. Flavor was good and the avocado was extremely fresh And the warm flour tortillas were delish! I always need rice with carne, so I also ordered a small side of rice, which was good. Nice flavor and texture. And I washed it all down with a Mexican Coca Cola in a bottle! Overall, it was tasty and I shouldn't have pre-judged Luna before I gave them a chance. Slowly, I am having more faith in Mexican food outside of California. i've heard a few people mention Luna but it never interested me with all the other authentic mexican options we have in grand rapids. i was in the mood for something new so we finally decided to give Luna a try. Luna is an elevated mexican restaurant with its modern decor and aesthetically pleasing salsa ramekins. It is also a place where you will most likely need a reservation. we walked in before 5pm on a Friday and they were totally booked. there were 2 spots open at the bar so we decided to sit there. i don't drink alcohol and was hoping we could order a non alcoholic version of the pineapple spritz or pina colada but they were unable to do so. i'm assuming those drinks are pre mixed. we stuck with water but i did realize later that they had jarritos which i love. we ordered the black bean and sweet potato tacos (the only vegetarian option) sans queso fresco and avocado salsa to ensure they were vegan. we also ordered chips and guac, salsa, and a side of beans and rice. the tacos were good once I added guac and salsa. i really enjoyed the thickness of the double corn tortilla. the tacos were served with pickled onions but they weren't very good and typically i love pickled onions. the chips and salsa order comes with 4 variations of salsa which was fun to try. the guac was okay but it had too much lime and not enough salt. the chips were thick and crunchy. the personal rice and beans were enough for 2 of us to share. the food was good but not something stand out that i'd get again. read more

We decided to try Luna after seeing the long wait at Hopcat, and that turned out to be a great call because we were seated immediately, which was a huge plus. From the start, the experience was smooth and welcoming. The food was amazing, everything tasted fresh and well-prepared, and the service matched that level with how attentive and friendly the staff were throughout. The drinks also stood out in that they were really well-balanced and not too strong or too sweet. One thing to note is that you can't modify your burrito order, which was a bit less than ideal at first especially if you have dietary preferences or restrictions. That said, it actually pushed me out of my comfort zone a bit, and I ended up really enjoying what I got anyway, so it worked out in the end . The only minor downside was that we were seated at a table right by the entrance/exit, so there was a bit more foot traffic than ideal, but honestly, it wasn't too disruptive and didn't take away from the overall experience. One of our favorite spots downtown to go before going to the Van for a concert or a game. Reservations are a must on the weekends. Chips and salsa are a must. Trying the different house-made salsas is a fun way to test your spice tolerance. Elote is kind of soggy in my opinion. Tacos are usually the go-to for trying different flavors, but the NY Strip Steak Fajitas are easily splittable between two people and is a better bang for your buck in my opinion. House margs are okay. Drinks would be the only place I think Donkey does a better job. read more

Before heading to an event downtown we stopped by Luna, conveniently located close to the van andel arena. We sat at the bar as it was pretty busy and looked like a wait for tables. I got the margarita flight - all very good and very strong! Seemed reasonably spiced for the size of the 3 margaritas you get. Food wise we were not super hungry, so decided to get the chips and guac to snack on. The chips are great and taste homemade. On the other hand, the guac was super acidic, maybe a touch too much lime for our tastebuds. Would go with a different appetizer next time, but the pico salsa was great, pretty basic, but complemented the chips nicely. Their tacos looked and smelled delicious, so we will have to come back to try those sometime. I do wish there was an outside seating area as it gets warmer. However, the inside is super spacious and inviting. A good spot overall, hope to try more. read more

Luna was the perfect place to bring my family. We love Mexican food, have a slightly adventurous palate while craving authentic fresh food, and love an environment with a quiet energy to it. The music and ambiance are lively but subtle, making conversation easy. The lighting is dim (especially in the back where our party is 9 we're seated) but good enough for us to see each other's faces. The food here is divine - and I could have eaten chips and queso and guacamole all day and been the Hallie's guy on earth. Or so I thought, until I had my taco al pastor... the pineapple mixed with a bit of heat was pure perfection. Mix the food and atmosphere with friendly service! Our server that regularly topping off the drinks and refilling the chips and dips. Oh, and for those who partake in imbibing alcoholic concoctions - I strongly recommend trying the caipirinha, Brazil's national drink. It's like a margarita, but even better. We were walking by and decided to stop in for drinks. We were greeted by the hosts but did not get real warm and fuzzy feeling unfortunately. We said we would only be staying for drinks and she waived us over to the bar. We took a seat in the end and waited for the bartender. While we waited I looked around the space. It's open and minimal. They did have a beautiful Christmas tree up with lights. The bartender stopped over after 5-10 minutes and we both ordered classic margaritas. We had a great experience at Luna on a busy Friday evening. We arrived around 5:45 and were seated right away, which was impressive given how packed it was. The host let us know upfront that the table was reserved for 7:00, which we really appreciated, it was clear and respectful of everyone's time. We were just stopping in for a quick appetizer before another reservation, and everything was perfect for that. The service stood out right away, our server was incredibly friendly and attentive, even refilling our chips without us needing to ask. We ordered the salsa and queso with chips, and it definitely hit the spot. I absolutely love coming here and would highly recommend it. The only downside is that it can get quite loud when it's busy, but the atmosphere and service still make it well worth the visit. read more

This review is for CATERING from the Ionia Luna. Definitely 5 stars! Exactly what we ordered, delivered efficiently and well set up for our office party. It's not fancy, we didn't order for fancy, we ordered delicious office casual, and Luna delivered on that. The trays of hot food were set up with warmers under them, so even an hour or so later when people went back for more the food was still warm. The staff has a wide variety of dietary needs and Luna was able to handle that without a flinch, so gluten free, vegetarians, and carnivores etc etc etc could all eat a full meal without complaint. Came in here on a random Saturday night with six girls and the only table available was a high top table. I've come to learn that in downtown Grand Rapids high top table seem to be a trend and they are always accompanied with a very hard, uncomfortable tiny stool, where you cannot put any purses, by the way, this is not the only restaurant with this style It is located directly across from the arena so this is a great location however I found it odd that they closed at 9:30 PM on a Saturday I was unable to get pictures of food quesadillas that were chicken and steak were delicious and you could definitely see all the meat and all the cheese The flight of salsa that also came with cheese and pico de gallo was incredible. The hot salsa was not hot at all. Unfortunately, the queso was perfectly gooey. The star of this tray were the perfectly fried tortilla chips. I could eat a bag of these of just the tortilla chips. The service here is OK and when you look around, all the servers are college students A specific example was that when drinks were re-ordered, we literally waited. 17 minutes while the drinks sat on the bar completely unattended, and whoever made the drink did not inform the server that it was ready and or did not remind them that it had been waiting and or chose to leave it there for 17 minutes The place was not that busy for Saturday night, which seemed a little odd I will say that, considering the food choices of modern Mexican I'm sure there are other choices in town However, if you come here, please come at least for the tortilla chips read more

Luna was my go to place when I worked downtown. Since moving out of the downtown area I don't visit the restaurant too often. However I did have the opportunity to dine in recently and it was a great experience. We stopped in on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was packed! We did get seated right away to our surprise. The menus are all by QR code which is fine. The service was great. The staff member was quick to bring out the food we ordered for the kids. Let me just say that it is pricier than your average taco spot. But again it is a sit down in downtown. The building is gorgeous but so very loud! Overall we loved our food. Came here with a group of 10 for dinner while in town for business. Our server was great and very accommodating to the many needs of our big group. Margaritas were good and very strong. We started off with the salsa flight, guac and the elote. The chips were great - you could tell they were homemade (and quite addicting). The only good salsa out of the 4 was the diablo. We ordered about 4 refills of it. The guac was not good, it had way too much lemon and tasted store bought. I don't like elote but my coworkers seemed to enjoy it. The entrees were hit or miss. I had the steak quesadilla which was good, but not very cheesy. It was equivalent to putting a bunch of steak in a tortilla and folding it in half with some cheese. But the steak tasted good. A Yelp friend and I went before an event and got the queso/salsa flight to share and a couple tacos! We didn't realize that the queso flight would have come with sides of salsa otherwise we would have just ordered that. The amount we had was way too much for the 2 of us but we enjoyed it! I liked the chips a lot but it was a bit overwhelming with the amount of food we ordered. I would also say that I enjoyed my tacos but they didn't blow me away. Luna is a great spot for downtown if you have an event but I don't think I'd go out of my way. It's been a minute since I had been to Luna and it was still just as good! I had the steak quesadilla and it really hit the spot. Exactly what I wanted. My friends and I split the chips and salsa flight and got guacamole added as well. I really like their mild green salsa. The hot salsa is pretty spicy but still has a nice taste. We also all got the margarita flight and I still love the Paloma. Literally so good. Only thing I didn't love was that we were booted from our table after an hour. It's just a restaurant rule I guess. It was fine because we were done eating and mostly just finishing our drinks but there were quite a few other tables open so it's kinda a bummer we had to dip out early. We waited about 15 minutes for a table and ordered drinks. I ordered a XX Amber and my daughter a pineapple jarrito. We added the salsa trio with chips to munch while we figured out which tacos. I'm very overdue for an updated review of Luna. The last time I visited was in July 2021 but the experience was much better than my previous visit. Nate and I met some friends and got the salsa flight, which is always tasty. I like the different salsa flavor profiles and the chips were super crispy, a bit greasy, but I like them. It's also a huge portion for sharing, great for a group of four or more. For my lunch, I decided against tacos and went with a cup of pozole and a chicken quesadilla that Nate and I shared. The pozole was excellent - the portion was really generous for being a cup size (or maybe they gave me a bowl instead? I was really surprised by the portion size). The flavors of the soup were a little spicy, savory, and really warming. The hominy has a great texture that I really enjoyed. I'd definitely get this again, especially on a cold day! I always joke about ordering quesadillas at restaurants, since it's something I can make easily at home, but it just sounded really good that day. And I'm glad we ordered it! The chicken was tender and there was plenty of melty cheese inside. The quesadilla came with sides of salsa, guacamole, and sour cream and it was definitely enough to split, along with the soup, for a light lunch. At $13.50 I thought the price for the quesadilla was a bit high, but like I said - it really hit the spot.
