Revisited the restaurant recently and I continue to love their dishes. I enjoyed their flautas (no sour cream- personal preference) and their enfrijoladas. Their food is consistent and very well plated. Service was wonderful and the food came out quickly. The restaurant is always clean and with the new design its super bright and welcoming. I also love their new menu updates and the website changes! Such a clean and fresh look. I personally like their commitment to the community and always being present at different events. back in july i went to el granjero to try to induce labor. sadly it didn't work but the food was still delicious. they have a vegan chorizo option which makes them standout from any other mexican restaurant. my partner added that to a burrito and requested no cheese/crema to make it vegan. i always go for the veggie fajitas which come with a small side of rice and beans (i requested no cheese on the beans). the chips are thick and crunchy and the salsa is fresh and delicious. They also bring out two sauces with the salsa as well which I confirmed do not contain dairy either. overall it's a good meal. read more

Super happy to have been to El Granjero recently for lunch so I can update this review! The dining area is still roomy and bright although I think they do a lot of takeout as it wasn't very busy during the lunch hour when we were there dining in. I was happy to see some lunch special options (available Monday through Friday, 11:30 am-2 pm). I got the quesadilla platter that comes with two mini quesadillas with your choice of meat and rice and beans. You can also do a crunchy taco plate, tamales plate, or two enchiladas or enfrijoladas. The quesadilla lunch platter was $8.99. Nate got two tacos, one lengua and one carnitas. Chips and salsa aren't complimentary at El Granjero, which I honestly think is just fine so I don't eat too many before my meal comes out. The food was fresh and hot, and I was really happy with the quesadillas. They were pretty greasy but I wasn't mad. I went with barbacoa and asada and both meats were delicious, tender, and flavorful. The accompanying rice and beans were also pretty good. I tried each of the tacos and really loved the lengua, it was very tender and delicious. The carnitas is still a chopped cut of fatty pork rather than a pulled pork, but I didn't mind it this time. Our server was polite and everything came out correctly. We visited this little gem tonight and enjoyed the experience! Our server Sarah was great! The decor is minimal but bright and clean. The menu is extensive and quite authentic. My ground beef natchos were excellent. Loaded with meat and cheese and topped with onion and cilantro I was surprised how hearty they were. I topped them with pico and sour cream. It comes with jalapeños which I passed on. They also come with refried beans which unfortunately I can't tolerate. My partner had chili rellenos which were deep fried and came with rice and beans, tortillas and avacado. He loved them. They do not serve alcohol but have many Mexican sodas as well as fountain drinks. We will be back for the authentic homemade food. read more

This little place was recommended to me as "real, authentic, Mexican food" and it is! I had the chicken fajitas, rice and chips. The fajitas were delicious, seasoned just right chicken and nicely shredded onions and bell peppers. The rice was a little bit bland but not over salted. I've yet to find a place that doesn't serve chips from a bag, as fresh, delicate chips are usually much better. There was pico de gallo, hot tomatillo salsa and some other salsa that I couldn't figure out. Overall a 4/5 for food and service. Epic, a taco mainstay on the Westside. El Granjero never disappoints. I've been here many, many times and, while I've had to wait briefly to get a table a few times, I don't ever mind because it's always worth it. The tacos were perfect! Their standard, traditional meat tacos are $2.50 each, but I opted for the $2.99 meats - barbacoa, tripe, and lengua (tongue). All three were perfectly seasoned but the tripe and tongue were exceptional! In fact, this place is now tied with San Jose for the best tripe taco in town. Like I said, epic tacos! read more

El Granjero is a very delicious, authentic, and has more enjoyable ambience than most of the other authentic Mexican spots in town. While places like El Cuñado and San Jose are more takeout style joints with smaller/more street food-oriented classics (and limited seating and limited table service), El Granjero is definitely more of a sit-down Mexican restaurant with a broader menu with more platter-style Mexican dishes + the tacos, tortas, gorditas, burritos, sopes, etc. you'd find at the taquerias. It's ambience is simple and cute, the servers are very helpful and professional. Food is generally very excellent, although, I ordered one of my favorite Mexican dishes there recently, chiles rellenos (stuffed poblano peppers) and it wasn't my favorite (the chiles rellenos at La Huasteca is by far my favorite in town). The fried egg-battered coating wasn't very crispy and the cheese was super wet and gooey (it just seemed like regular mozzarella, not Oaxaca cheese). But it could be a different recipe or my preference, it just wasn't the best in my opinion. Their tacos and sopes are still amazing and they do vegetarian ones as well. It's always one of my first choices when i want authentic Mexican food, but need a more sit-down table service experience. read more

I had a major taco craving, and El Granjero looked like a worthy try. Here's what we had: Chips, salsa, and gauc: The chips aren't fresh but paired with salsa and gauc; they did the trick. Now, I like a chunky gauc, and this is a smoother version. It was fine, but would have been better with just a bit more lime spritzed in. Carnitas and Al Pastor Tacos: I doubled down on pork and got a carnitas taco and an al pastor taco. The carnitas was basically deep fried pieces of pork, which surprised me as I'm used to a shredded style. The pieces were a bit dry but still good with a couple spoonfuls of their green salsa. The al pastor was on the sweet side for me, but delicous nonetheless. Carne Asada Tostada - The carne asada was definitely the best of the meats I tried. It was tender and well seasoned. Mixed with the tostada crunch, lettuce and sour cream, each bite made me want more and more. Carne Asada Burrito - California style: I ordered a carne asada burrito and I asked if they could put French fries inside. The server asked the kitchen, and they said yes! The burrito still held up, and was oh so good. Unlike some other joints, you can customize this California burrito! So, I'm definitely coming back for the carne asada and burrito. Check them out! This has been one of my favorite authentic Mexican spots for years now. There are a lot of good options in GR to be honest and I do have more to try, but I think El Granjero is worth a stop. They have sit-down waiter service and counter service. It's not always super clear, just grab a menu and sit down for dining in if no one greets you. The chips and salsa are fine- mild salsa and thick chips. Most recently I got a couple tacos and a sope and they were delicious. The mexican style tacos were generous and I loved the flavor in the chorizo. The al pastor had chunks of pineapple, which I dont see super often. The sope had a thicker dough base topped with refried beans, meat of your choosing, green salsa, sour cream, queso fresco, and lettuce. They also have desserts and Mexican candies. If you're in the neighborhood, this is worth a stop. It's in the vicinity of 2 other great places though so your choices are plentiful. read more

This place is very close to another popular Mexican restaurant, and there was decent parking here. My parents and I came, and the customer service was great - I just felt bad because by 5pm, the restaurant was almost full and there were few workers. Either way, things still moved pretty fast. Tacos: chicken was a little rough but had great flavor! Steak taco was great. Salsa: milk and yummy Pico: spicy spicy Beans: not too salty like many other places, very good! Rice: so fluffy and delicious. Gordita: just okay, would not get again. Tamale: huge! Loved the texture. Stuffed poblano pepper: my family's favorite, the cheese was unique. Elote: served in a cup, a little kick in it from the spice, and some mayo - very yummy. I would definitely come back, and get tacos and the stuffed pepper. Odd ... just an odd experience. My family and I love Mexican food. We frequent taquerias all the time. So when we found a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant with 4 stars on 100+ reviews we thought ... let's do this. I really have no idea how this place got 4 stars. Our experience was drastically different than a 4 star review. There are so many things to say, I'm going to list a few: - First, they charge $2 for chips and salsa. In fact they apparently used to charge $1.50, but wrote $2 in pen over the amount in the menu. I hate places that nickel and dime you. Chips and salsa should be free, it's the prices of admission to being a good Mexican restaurant. By the way, the chips and salsa were by far the high point of the meal. - Second, we ordered chicken strips and fries for my son. What showed up was literally 2 ozs of cold BOILED (that's right: boiled) scrabbled bits of chicken. When you order a kids chicken strip meal, one would naturally assume it will be 3-4 strips of warm breaded chicken. You don't expect 2 ounces of boiled chicken served at refrigerator temperature. How many children do you know would eat that? It reminded me of the boiled chicken we used to make our dog when she was having stomach issues last year. By the way, my wife ordered an a la carte chicken taco - same exact flavorless, cold, boiled chicken inside. Mexican food should be flavorful, savory, some spice, etc. This was the exact opposite. - Third, after discussing with the waitress at length the contents of the veggie quesadilla, my wife and daughter both ordered one. The veggie quesadilla, had things they asked to not include (peppers, mushrooms from a can, and beans) and was missing things that should have been included (avocado). - Fourth, The meat from my steak taco's temperature was also straight from the refrigerator. My pork Gordita was all fat ... But that may have been my fault for ordering wrong. My chorizo tostadas was actually good. Everything was so odd and unusual that it almost became comical for my family and I. At one point the waitress filled up my son's water cup and the water was so warm that it instantly melted his cup of ice. Pretty good! I got the Chile rellenos which honestly disappointed me. :/ It severely lacked in the flavor department, even on the inside. They serve it with tortillas corn or flower and beans and rice and both of the sides were pretty good! What made it up for me is the steak sope my mom got. I don't agree with judging a restaurant by one dish (though it sucks I ordered such a dish). The sope was stacked with Mexican cheese, steak and other toppings and the corn shell was delicious! Well seasoned, so yum! Ordering one next time! We decided to have El Granjero cater for our wedding, and we could not have been more pleased with the service! We went with a buffet-style taco bar, and our guests really enjoyed it! The staff was prompt, courteous, and hard-working, and the food was delicious as ever (and the price was extremely reasonable to boot)! We ordered for 70 people, but only had 50 attend. We were really worried that we would have to deal with leftovers, but our guests ate their fill and then went back for seconds! The service included a choice of 3 different taco fillings, rice, beans, tortilla chips and salsa, and even drink service! Even before the event itself, the tasting was amazing, and they were able to answer all of our questions and were able to fit dietary restrictions some of our guests had. Leading up to the wedding, their communication (mostly via email) was prompt and detailed, making sure every last detail was absolutely perfect. Good food, good prices! We went with a party of 9 on a weekday night. The lobby was mostly empty and very cold, but it's such a small building. There are many food options, which are affordably priced. I ordered the Steak Burrito, which was seasoned well and a nice portion. The quesadillas, when ordered in the smaller size, were still about the size of a 9" plate. The salsa is not too spicy, the guacamole tasted fresh and paired well with our meals. This restaurant could be overlooked due to it's location, but it is worth checking out. The consensus in our group, which included 3 individuals who lived in Mexico city, was that it tasted authentic.
