Today my work team (8 of us) drove to Gainesville to have a team gathering for the first time since COVID. The food was very good, and the service was excellent. Luna's staff is top notch and very professional. We probably asked over 100 questions as we planned and we got what we needed every time, either via email or by phone. On the day of, the staff was prompt and stayed busy making sure all of our guests were accommodated within the timeline that we set. They were also just a lot of fun to work with in general. Had no previous experience with our venue so they came out to visit first and had no hiccups on the day of. This is important to note because we had asked them to come out to see the dinner space first as it is very tight and we were not sure if a long table for 60 would work. Roland and staff said they would do whatever was needed to make it work and they did!!! The space was very tight, but all of the guests got their meals on time. That really helped us pull off a beautiful part of our event that we really looked forward to and hoped would work out. Food was excellent at the tasting and on the big day. We had a custom plated meal with a cocktail hour and hors d'oeuvres to start. Our guests had lemonade when they arrived to our venue, and enjoyed all of the food and drinks that followed. Luna's was even able to prepare some items onsite, and assisted with the cake cutting. We had shrimp and grits; peach glazed chicken; and a vegetarian that our vegetarian friends really appreciated and enjoyed. I should note that we provided our own drinks, and Luna's bartended and also gave great suggestions on what to do for drink station set up. We appreciate little touches like staff bringing us food while we were taking pictures after the ceremony or drinks while we were dancing in the evening, just so we didn't have to walk away from the fun to get what we needed. We had a very nice dinner here. Our server was a bit stressed but she treated us very friendly we ordered apps and had them served and eaten before we ever ordered our entrees. Then we waited quite a while for our food. The owner even sent out free desserts for us yet a personal apology would have been nice. This place is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in my whole life! The food is to die for, the staff is great, management is just wonderful. I had their special of the night which was a New York strip with this delicious sauce. Wow, not good wow, shockingly bad wow. They made my Valentine's Day dinner quite memorable. First off, I am qualified to make such claims as my first degree was in culinary arts and I worked many years as a professional chef. My wife and I reserved a table for Valentine's Day, and were not informed in advance that there would be a fixed menu. My wife had chosen her preferred items off the online menu. None of it was available and we had to order from the prepared menu. In fine dining this is not necessarily a bad thing. It allows a kitchen to optimize for a busy night, and allows a skilled kitchen to even upscale the quality of the food and showcase their strengths. This is not to be confused with banquet service, which is designed to feed a massive amount of people at a low cost and questionable quality. In banquet service you pre-cook most of the food and hold it in warming racks, etc. this usually results in over cooked food and poor quality, but very fast service. The later is what they provided. Things were bad from the start. My old fashioned (bartender 101) was made with sour mix and unsweetened making it so bitter it was undrinkable. I sent it back, the 2nd drink was better, but not an old fashioned. I was scared to try a 3rd time. Next bread service was nothing more than brown and serve rolls, right off the back of the Sysco truck. Then a salad, grilled romaine, tenderloin, and blue cheese. Normally it's not a big deal to prep and hold salads for later service.....unless it's a warm salad! Then you get limp greens, which we did. Course 3 was duck, Brussels and orange glaze. The Brussel sprouts were over cooked and had a sulfur oxide smell and bitter taste. The duck was insanely over cooked and had a limp squishy skin and....tasted like liver. It was dry and grey all the way through. It had all been held so long it was breaking down. I sent it back. My second duck was also overcooked, but not as dry. I choked it down scared to try for 3 times. At this point it's clear that the cooks (not chefs) had the expertise of a line cook. I'm along for the ride now! Let's see how far down the rabbit hole they can drag us. The dessert course was described to be to be like a warm brownie with vanilla ice cream. What I got was nothing like a brownie. It was a soft warm pudding like cake. Probably from a mix, held in a Pyrex dish in a water bath and inverted on to the plate. It was like the pre-made lava cakes you can buy at Costco, but without the chocolate center and not as good. The vanilla ice cream was fine, but not spectacular. It wasn't a high butter fat ice cream or anything special. The price for this underwhelming experience? $126 before tip. read more

And that was me going in the kitchen that she mentions. *Reservation for 10 to celebrate a friends birthday to sit in front of live music in bar. MESSED UP! Had to dine in restaurant without music. * Out of only Sauvignon Blanc on menu. * Out of sparking water. * Replacement wine (more $) brought to the table with no ice bucket and HOT, right from the dishwater, glasses. I asked but the waiter would not chill my glass, my husband had to at the table with ice water. * Waiter never took appetizer or salad orders. * Had to flag waiter down 45 minutes into the evening to place meal orders. * Someone served us bread with oil. We ran out of oil and asked numerous times for more. It never came. * A couple we knew came in about an hour after us. We told them service was horrible so they ordered immediately (still, after us) when they sat down. They ate and left an hour later. We still had NO food. * Our waiter disappeared for long stretches. He did keep drinks coming slowly, but no explanation or urgency about our food. * We asked repeatedly up until the 2 hour mark about our food and we were told by various people us would "be right out". * We had plenty of time to note some things.... - No wait - No tables were turned over. - A few tables never sat - Seemed to have sufficient staff - Not overly busy for a Saturday night - Long stretches with no food coming out of kitchen. Most tables had NO food at all for over 30 minutes. * I went into the kitchen at the 2 hour mark to speak to Juan the owner. He was not apologetic, rude and told me our orders were too complicated!?!?! We all ordered right off his menu! When I asked why our friends that came in after us were served prior to us and had already left he kept saying our orders were too complicated. * At the 2.5 hour mark another in our group went to speak to Juan in the kitchen. They still had not even started our meals!!!! * My husband and I left at the 2.5 hour point. We don't eat that late, we were beyond iterated and tired. The rest of our group stayed and was severed after 10 PM. They were given a few free desserts as another diner told us is the norm since they go bad quickly and Juan would have to trash or donate them. I love to support local businesses and my few past experiences there have been nice. I get things happen but Juan lost me as a customer and earned this post by how his totally mishandled it. He NEVER stopped by our table to check on us, apologize, offer an explanation, offer some appetizers since we were starving. Note, one in our group is even a "good friend" of his. Wow, I'd never treat a customer or a friend like that. Even after the 2 hour mark when I spoke to him it still took him over an hour to get the food out. His eventual explanation " these things just happen in his business". No Juan, they don't! YOU made it so bad by your lack of professionalism and incompetence. read more

Had another great lunch meeting at Lunas. Juan was there to greet our party and got us seated right away. We had a great waitress she was very attentive. We have been a few times and it had been pretty ok. Today I went with 17 ladies. It took 1 1/2 hours to get our food. The food came out one dish at a time. With minutes in between others getting their food. Two ladies waited 1 hour for their meals. One sat there and watched as we all finished our meals. It was awful. The waiter stated oh it hadn't been that long !! I said look. We are all done. The manager came out and said he checked and we had waited long. I said that one ladies meal should be comped. I absolutely love this restaurant! The drinks are amazing, be sure to ask for Maddi on the piano bar side to make your Mermaid drink!! The atmosphere is so relaxing, and the food is the best I have ever had! The shrimp and scallops skewers are perfectly cooked, not chewy like most places cook the scallops. Other tables were complaining, a lady at another table stormed the kitchen. Wow wow wow! Everything about this place was amazing. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place just wanting to get a bite to eat and we were blown away by this place. I don't hand out a lot of 5 star ratings, as there is typically something that's just not the best there is at an establishment. I read some reviews for Luna's before coming, and several of them were, lets just say, unfavorable. But the menu attracted me, and we are fairly new to the Gainesville area, and thought, lets give it a try. The hostess Lindsey greeted us warmly and with a smile. (recommend a reservation, which was given at the time we wanted) Lindsey was also our wait staff, and was knowledgeable about the specials, and was pronto on the drinks and taking our appetizer order. I decided to try the chef's 4 course surprise. Wife had the chicken Marsala. From the opening salad, to the scallop/shrimp/risotto, to the filet medallions to the dessert, EVERY bite was fabulous. When you pose your restaurant as one of the fine dining establishments in the city, you need to back that up with excellent service. I attended a Christmas luncheon with 15 other ladies. When I arrived, I found that the room where we had been scheduled to meet had been given to another group and our group was moved to another space. I didn't find that out from a host or hostess, as there was no one that I saw to ask. I finally asked one of the wait staff, who told me where we were to be. I ordered the fried oysters and sat back to wait. . . And wait . . . And wait. Finally, our server came to tell the three of us who had ordered that the other group had ordered all the oysters, so I ordered the salmon salad. I told our server that it was already over an hour since we originally ordered and that I had a doctor's appointment. I asked how much longer it would be until we were served since I would have to leave soon and was assured that the food would be out soon. A little bit later, the server came out again and told me they were now out of salmon. For a third time, I chose another entree. After a total of two hours, the meals started to arrive. All the other ladies were served, and nothing was said to me. After waiting another 10 minutes, I excused myself from the group and left. Poor service, poor planning and lack of communication make Luna's a poor choice for a dining experience. read more
