I almost didn't go after reading the reviews... I haven't been for awhile, because the prices went up so much! But, glad I did! The staff were very nice - smiling - happy! Even the older lady, who they have referred to numerous times. Food was amazing! I'd give it all a 5 star, but $18 for a 14 in / $12 for a 9 in cheesesteak... is high imo & my bread was a little crunchy. It was actually close to closing time too & they didn't rush us at all. This place has been around for over 20 years and it looks it. It's not the cleanest or best kept establishment. The staff are usually angry and rude. There's a woman who takes the orders, she's always working, and she'll mock or yell at you for not ordering per her standards. I order food here like I'm talking to a drill sargeant. 1 cheesesteak, with wiz, no mayo with fries. The less words the better. The fries are shoestring bag frozen type and hardly ever fully cooked. If they are cooked correctly they are good. I do like the frontier fries which have bbq sauce, whiz, and bacon. The cheesesteaks are a step up from steakum's but that's mainly due to the chewy in-house baked roll. Why do I visit -- because people I work with talk me into it about once every 6 months. Back in the day when Herlocher owner the multiple CC Peppers locations in town, it was *THE* place to find the best cheesesteaks and subs. Almost everyone in town loved CC Peppers. Fast forward to today and you have a sloppy, rude owner who hired burnt-out, equally sloppy and rude staff. Cold cuts are typically at the end of their life, the lettuce is often littered with wilted/brown bits, and the grill used to make your cheesesteak isn't cleaned very often. Also, I've never seen the staff wash their hands after handling dirty stuff, so I'm surprised this place hasn't been slapped with a health code violation. One annoyance is that back in 2022 they had their own masking policy when everyone else in town stopped masking requirements due to township recommendations. I had no problem wearing a mask back then if a shop owner requested it. But if you forgot to bring your own, they wouldn't even give you a disposable mask. They'd simply refuse service. Another annoyance is that this place used to only take cash. They were one of the few hold outs to switch to credit/debit cards not too long ago. And even with cards they're weird about it. They have a card minimum and I swear they bought their card machine used as a relic of the past since it takes forever to run it and print you a receipt. A final annoyance for me is the way they have you line up and process your order. It's not friendly, as it's more akin to a Seinfeld episode than anything inviting. You can't see the toppings, you have a giant menu on the wall that you can't view ahead of time until it's your turn, and the staff expect you to order everything in their own way. Don't even think about asking them a question unless you want to get chewed out for it. But besides the annoyances, what drove me away permanently was the increasingly worsening sanity conditions combined with the extremely rude staff. We stopped to pick up some lunch here on the Sunday we moved our son into his apartment the day before classes started. Atmosphere would get this place 2 stars. It's not much to look at. Pretty simple. No frills. No decorations. Very plain. Nothing fancy. But it's clean. Due to COVID, they had many of the tables roped off and only some of the tables open for seating inside. We ordered our food to go. The staff were friendly and prompt. They have 9" and 14" sandwiches. I had the 9" philly and it was DELICIOUS. We shared some of the Mexican fries, and they were pretty good. Prices were reasonable. I'd give the food 4 stars and the quality of service 4 stars. I'm always a little worried about eating at some places like this and wondering if I would regret it later, but I'm happy to say I didn't. The food was delicious AND it didn't give me any stomach issues later in the day. So I enjoyed the food we had here and I would totally go back and get lunch here again in the future. read more

Went in to get a cheese steak and noticed several signs about masking. That's fine, I don't mind wearing a mask while I put my order in. I'm not one of those types trying to make a statement and I am more than happy to respect their rules while I am on their property. The problem is that the only places requiring masking right now are doctors offices and they provide masks at entry. Since the county DOH is showing two cases of COVID/week and the local mandates have been lifted it makes sense that most people are NOT masking. So, naturally, I don't carry one with me anymore. I figured I would politely be offered one at some point and I would then put it on-- no problem. Well, I guess they don't provide them and politely asking for one gets you a pile of attitude from surly manager right before he throws you out. So my review is based on how they handle/enforce the policy and not the policy itself. As I said, I'll be happy to respect their rules while on their property. It really felt like the dude just wanted to force people to do something and didn't really care about COVID itself. Point proven by the fact that more than a few employees had noses poking out over heavily soiled masks. The table of mask-less people eating seemed ironic too. The whole situation is also kind of absurd when you consider how dirty the place is overall. As if draconian mask policies somehow square the circle on the lack of hygiene in literally every other realm of possibility. I figured, like most places, they would try to be friendly about the policy and work with people to observe the rules. Instead, they seem to relish in being hostile to people. The in-our-face signs everywhere, the shouting, the sticky floors, the absurdity, etc. made the entire experience equal parts surreal and awful. I rate 0 out of 5. Kind of an odd combination of a greasy spoon dive joint where you may find yourself at 2am, but located in a strip mall where Walmart and high flight stores are. Not complaining. At all. Stopped here for lunch while building a store in the area, and really was somewhat impressed. Kind of odd in terms of where and how to order, but I went with a sub and fries along with a fountain cola. Wasn't disappointed. I would like to go back and try other things- but I'm not always in that area often. I would say it looks like they have daily specials which would be helpful if being in the area- but this is a divey type place and in a good way. Very tasty- proper combination of grease and flavor. I've been a fan of CC Peppers for a long time, and as always, the food was absolutely delicious. The flavors were on point, and the portions were generous. However, I was very disappointed by the service experience. The lady at the front, with the facial piercings and low-rise pants showing her ass crack, was incredibly unprofessional. She made a point of loudly complaining about the open sign being off and questioning why people were still coming in, all while standing right in front of patrons. It was uncomfortable and inappropriate to hear her vent like that, especially in front of customers. The other staff whom are younger were encouraging her to look at the bigger picture and fake it to make it until closing time it's unfortunate that a place with such great food has a worker that don't seem to understand how to maintain a professional and welcoming environment. Half of the dining room was blocked off and then there was nowhere to sit we politely asked if they could unblock the other half of the restaurant and the cook with the dirty beard and hoodie groaned and said "yeah, I guess so. I worked 14 hours and have to come back tomorrow. I am going to close in half an hour". Mind you, it was 7pm and they don't close til 9. I called ahead . I ordered for around 4 pm. I ordered french fries with no bbq sauce. I ordered blue cheese on the side of buffallo chicken sub and quite a few other things . My bill was around 70 ish dollars. I got there at 10 of four. The gentelman gleefully told me they hadn't started my order yet. So my son and I sat down and waited. I picked up my order when it was done and I paid. I drove home to find . No blue cheese. But they did put the bbq sauce on my frontier fries . The onions on everything were terribly strong. The lettuce on every sandwich was old (at some spots it was turning brown). One of my chicken subs had burn marks on the roll. It was so dissappointing. I used to get CC's when I was in college during PSU football games / tailgates, and they were always delicious. I was recently back in town and decided to come here for lunch with my father, and I was not disappointed. The service wasn't exactly "friendly", but I mean come on, it's a sub shop, locally run, by a bunch of what looked like college kids / recent grads... We aren't talking about McDonalds where they get paid to say "Hi, welcome to blah blah blah". You don't have to be nice to me, just make my food! My father got the "coast to coast" chicken cheese steak and I got the Italian... A order of fries, and a drink... His sub was a bit messy to say the least, and mine wasn;t much to look at either. The flaor was good... but not 5 star good. I didn't pay (THANKS DAD) so I don't remember the exact amount, but I do remember it being pretty steep for 2 subs, 50 fries and a coke. Ordered a California style cheesesteak with extra meat. The last time I was here there was not enough meat so I wanted more. These is probably one of the most plain, no flavor cheesesteak I've had in a very long time. Was not worth the money at all!! The roll for this cheesesteak is so lame, it sucked big time. I always get the California and substitute oil & vinegar for the mayo. And though I know that's totally weird, they are the only place ever that hasn't looked at me like I had six heads when I made that request, which makes me really happy. But people who like real cheesesteaks seem to think they are awesome too, so I don't think I'm alone in my love of CC Peppers. The one thing you HAVE to get is the cheese fries. The cheese fries are SO GROSS YET SO GOOD. My favorite cheese fries on the planet. I'm a local, and I generally hate the super-Penn-Statey establishments. But as far as greasy local fast food goes, CC Peppers is where it's at! For some reason, it isn't too wellknown among students, but it seems to be really popular with old alumni. In fact, I really hate going there on football weekends because you get trapped standing in line with a bunch of old creepy drunk dudes for what seems like eons. You know, I really thought that this place was a great deal. The prices are pretty damn low, and they have a large variety. Even so, I felt ripped off after I got my order. This location is right in the shopping center where Walmart is, so you can't miss it. One day, I thought, well I only have $4 and I'm kind of hungry. I could have either gotten a Subway, or go and try out CC Peppers. CC Peppers is basically a grimier version of Subway. The staff are kind of lazy, and look like they walked out of a trailer park. Nonetheless, their sandwiches are cheap.....but there is a reason why. For $4, their pizza sub was even worse tasting than Subway. I don't know how you can accomplish that goal, but they've done it. There was literally a couple pieces of meat, engulfed with paper thin bread. Sure, I felt awesome when I ordered my sub, thinking that I was going to get a great deal, but boy was I wrong. Maybe I was being a little harsh on this place, so I decided to try it once more. Oh boy. I should have gone ahead and saved my $5, because it was the same experience. This time, I ordered the Cheeseburger Sub for $5. Sounds pretty hard to mess up right? Not unless you're CC Peppers. Then it's like the snap of a finger. It literally had about one ounce of beef in the whole thing. CC Peppers? Take your money elsewhere. Even a $5 footlong at Subway takes the crown in this competition. read more

I don't eat many cheesesteaks, but when I want one, this is were I prefer to get them in State College. They actually seem to use meat that wasn't ground into a thousand pieces, rolled, and frozen between two pieces of wax paper. There still may be some rolling and wax paper involved, but the beef that I had was juicier than typical Steak-um places. Those are always dry. The fries are good and there are too much of them. I hate to get them to go, though, because they steam themselves in the foil, so they get mushy in a few minutes. Not much that you can do about that, I'm afraid. Nope. The cheesesteak here is not much better than one you can get a Subway. The meat is from a frozen block here. I witnessed this. CC's puts a lot of oregano on their sub, and almost NO cheese. I had to reread the menu to understand whether cheese was supposed to be on mine. The fries are okay, and so are the prices. The reviews for CC Peppers are up and down as you can see, but on my trip to State College I decided to gamble, and give it a try. Well this gamble paid off. On our trip our party had both the Authentic Steak Sandwich Combo, and the Italian Sub combo. Both meals were really good. Much better than the crap subway serves up that everyone mentions below. (who knew subway was the staple of subs?) The combos are the best way to go at CC Peppers. A nine inch sub, a huge portion of fresh dropped fries, and a drink for just above 7 bucks, Great Deal! Overall I would recommend stopping in, it's not the most beautiful looking establishment but the food is good quality, and a great price. I'd stop in again for sure. read more

This restaurant has been going downhill for years. When you have to tell them how to make their own specialties (yes, there is oregano on the California cheesesteak) I'd say it was time to change. Many PSU alumns like this place, and I'm into places that people love. Whell, we have been back a few times, and it is a grungy (slightly) place in a strip mall. I think if you order their cold subs you are probably misinformed. If you like the antics of college and college+ sub monkeys, and they are in a good mood, they will be charming and helpful and you will think you were somewhere nice. if you piss them off they will throw verbal shit at you. it is greasy, but nice food. You probably should take advice on what is good and not, as (see cold subs above) some is just pedestrian and some can start to reach towards sublime on a good day. This hoagie joint is an establishment in State College. I really wish they would reopen more locations, and hopefully my review will help to drive more business their way. The daily specials are always worth a look especially if you are a fan of shoe string style french fries. Speaking of spuds, they have a versatile selection of specialty fries many of which include that addicting golden cheese sauce. Onto the hoagies - the Italian fully loaded is superb, a real must have if you need a filling meal before taking on that next study session or afternoon bar tour. The veggies are crisp, meat and cheese is fresh and the oil is plentiful. The next real treat comes in the form of Philly's second greatest invention, da cheesesteak, yo! They call it Philly Style but it comes with a twist. What you have here is a good cut of steak chopped up and mixed with perfectly melted cheese wit onions or wit out. The CC's special add on is a dollop of red sauce all over the meat which sits between a flakey and extra soft bun. The size of this steak will not send you packing although its the perfect portion when coupled with those fries and a saucy fountain soda, DP is on tap!
