My wife and I decided to upgrade our back yard with new shrubs and border perennials. We found out about Lurvey's and met with Craig, one of the managers, to discuss our project. He was incredibly generous with his time and offered us great advice, even showing us around and pointing out recommended plants and shrubs. We drove back home and did more research and thinking. A week later we returned and met up with Craig again. He discussed our choices and then showed us where to find everything. Along the way he gave us even more ideas by letting us look at pictures of his own extraordinary landscape. He never pressured us to buy anything and even came back later to check on us. I would like to add that his colleagues were also very helpful and open to dialogue in response to our questions. Conceptually, I love Lurvey. Knowledgeable staff; high quality products; great selection. We have spent thousands of dollars at Lurvey over the last 10+ years. But... This spring we went to purchase a tree for our yard. Found what we wanted for $800. We would prefer that professionals plant this tree. All good until: Tree cost: $800. Delivery and planting: $1200. So an $800 tree costs $2000 to have planted. Are you kidding me? 150% service charge to plant. That's like buying a $1000 big screen tv from Abt or Best Buy and paying $2500 total to have it installed. No rational person would do this. By comparison, we have purchased trees from other local nurseries and their planting fees are typically 50% of tree cost. So an $800 tree would cost an additional $400 to plant. Total cost: $1200. Who in their right mind would pay 150% of the cost of the item to have it "installed?" Do better, Lurvey. This is madness. read more

Imagine one of those quaint tourist shops in a trendy location full of overpriced baubles had a baby with Home Depot's garden department and you'd have a pretty good idea of what the Lurvey's experience was like. They do have an impressive collection of plants and pretty much all of them looked healthy and well taken care of. Some of the staff was friendly, some acted like I was getting in their way. I found a couple of decent flowers, and though I paid a bit more for them than I may have somewhere else they are still thriving. The line to check out wrapped throughout the building, I must have come at a rush while half of the cashiers were at lunch or something. It took longer to check out than it did to shop the expansive outdoor area. So, if you just want the bottom line: Good stuff, but overpriced for a poor boy like me. read more

A truly first class garden shop. Lots of selection of both landscape shrubs and trees as well as a very wide assortment of annuals and perennials. Prices are a bit steep. The place is swarming with help... I think I counted over 15 employees working in the various outside areas. They even have a huge building with all kinds of furniture, Knickknack's, decor, and such. Outstanding selection of everything. Nothing is cheap, but nothing seemed outrageous. However when I called the store back to ask about having a plant repotted, I was told that the manager was out but would call me back the next day. No call came. That instance of poor service won't detract from me going back because they are one of the best shops I have found in that area. read more

I love Lurvey's so much that I drive all the way from Lakeview to fulfill my gardening and landscaping needs. I love the large statuary selection. But what I love best are the rocks, stones and boulders--items that can't be had from Home Depot or from Gethsemane. Not to also mention, they also have a huge assortment of plants, flowers, shrubs and trees! For those looking for rocks and boulders, there is a huge selection in the back (that's where all the large ones are). Get them weighed by the statuary entrance, then pay inside. You can then bring your auto to the pick up area and the staff will load your rocks (or mulch or whatever) into your vehicle. read more

Whenever anyone asks me where I shop, the first word out of my mouth is "LURVEY'S!" My work is creating very unique, individually-designed container gardens that are NEVER repeats from client to client: that's my particular style. I absolutely LOVE shopping at Lurvey for all of my client work for three major reasons. First and ABSOLUTLEY foremost: the ENORMOUS variety that I can count on Lurvey's to have every single time I shop there... For my uniquely designed containers, I don't order vast numbers of the same plant from a nursery and use them over and over. My whole business model is to create UNIQUE, individually styled containers that are always different. I need variety all the time, and Lurvey's never disappoints! Even late into the growing season, just before the next season hits, they always have such a vast array of plant material when all other garden centers and nurseries have long ago sold out. I simply wouldn't shop anywhere that didn't have such variety for me to count on all the time! Second reason I shop there is because of the PEOPLE! Everyone who works there is incredibly helpful, and always ready to make accommodations for me when I come in, whether I'm there just for a few plants or on a huge buying day. Everyone is always super friendly, very knowledgeable, and extremely patient! I marvel at how well they deal with large amounts of shoppers in the store at the same time...and still maintain the happy, friendly attitude. The third reason I shop there is because of the beautiful facility! Nowhere else can I shop for my plant material completely covered in a gorgeous greenhouse, that is always beautifully designed to sell product! I always know that even on a rainy day, I can go shop at Lurvey's and be comfortable! Hmmm,  thought I already had a review of Lurvey from one of our many past visits here, but I guess not!  Anyway, it's good excuse to write a new review, which I haven't done in a PR long time cuz we never go anywhere "fun" anymore, boo! Well, we came in to pick up a hanging flower pot and some annuals for our back deck, and like the name says this is an annual event.  Only this time, it was during our pandemic, and on a beautiful Saturday we had about a 20 minute orderly wait to get in for some social distancing.  This worked well as far as I was concerned and everyone had masks and carts were wiped down for us, and it was no more crowded inside than you might find at say a Costco.  The only little knock today might be that their parking lot was a bit small for the crowd size, but people come and go, so just circle around a couple times.  The quality and selection is top notch here, and between Lurvey and Pesche's, these two are the premier garden centers in our area.  Lurvey can be a little pricey (not that Pesche's isn't) but you get quality products, a huge selection, and knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly staff.  Once in a while one business will have something that the other doesn't, but it's rare for what we are generally look for.  Mainly, and despite what I just said about parking, Lurvey doesn't have the zoo of a parking lot that Pesche's does.  I also give Lurvey credit for beautifying their stretch of Dempster St. with beautiful floral arrangements in front of their large storefront for passersby to enjoy and we do that almost everyday during the summer. read more

Went to pick out stone veneers this past weekend for a project and the employee with glasses behind the project desk was so inconsiderate and condescending. We saw the older woman with shoulder length hair who was working with him roll her eyes and we were done. We told them to forget it, made a complaint with the manager and left. We had a similar issue with the same male employee last October, but wanted to give Lurveys another chance. Last October, my wife asked about stone and the man said the stone was outside and pointed. He never got up or went to help her- we assume because it was raining and he wasn't interested in helping her. We are/were long time customers, but this has soured us. This weekend, the employee acted like it was his first day on the job...like what we were asking for was so obscure. We provided a picture and were then condescendingly schooled on how to install the stone. We explained we already have a contractor and were just there to pick out stone. He talked down to us and our perception was he either had an issue with talking to two women or the fact that one of us was a person of color. He rarely made eye contact with my wife who is a woman of color and continued typing on his computer and eating his snack. Shopping for our stone elsewhere. read more

Well despite the pandemic and earlier when I tried to stop by because it was just curbside but now after I guess June or July they opened it for regular business.Unfortunately I had failed trying to save my African violets but they were the ones who had more affordable African violets then buying African violets in Chicago. I do recommend if you want healthier foliage of any kind of plants indoors or out during the spring or summer time but do come over here next to some other suburban nurseries and plant needs. hopefully they will open full time for business and less limitations if this pandemic continues read more

My wife and I made a return visit today. Very busy. The line of customer carts waiting for checkout was 75ft long, out the door. They only had two cashiers working. This is typical of Lurvey's disregard for the customer. Save money on paying cashiers and make the customer wait. We left without buying anything. The shopping experience at Pesche's is so much more pleasant. No waiting, very efficient cashiers and lots of them. read more

I have been a repeat customer for many years now. The staff turnover has been a growing problem. I'm sympathetic to the fact that covid has caused staffing issues. There are current staff at the des plaines lurveys that have been employed for years. A handful of the more seasoned employees are absolutely frustrating. I have gotten to a point of just avoiding them completely. I have heard excuses of all kinds from certain employees who will do everything not to help me. I have spoken with fellow contractors who feel the same. Some people do not belong in customer service. I feel management has allowed problems to persist due to lack of labor. Its time for a secret shopper at the des plaines location. Now that I have gotten my complaint out of the way I can give kudos to those who deserve it. There are certain people there than I trust and that will always help someone no matter how busy they are. Lurveys has healthy beautiful plants. We spend tens of thousands of dollars there every year. I encourage everyone to go to Lurveys. The plants from lurveys have far from exceded my expectations. I hope they correct the staff problem before I find another supplier. read more

I used to love Lurvey's too. Last summer 2021, they were short staffed so I got used to not asking or expecting much help because I would always get, 'sorry, we are short staffed. We are doing our best' reply EVERY time I came in which was once a week. I though this summer would be different. Now, no one even acknowledges me. Lines are out the door. What happened to the check outs in the green house? Cashiers are rude. I know I'm on my own when I go there. I used to tell everyone to go the Lurvey's for their customer service and I have spent a fortune there. Now I can't not recommend it anymore. If you want great customer service, smiling staff that looks you in the eyes, people that help load your stuff to your car willingly, short lines, family centered business where staff are seen joking with each other, and plenty of variety of plants, go to Red's in Northbrook. I purchased five 4' bushes last June and had them planted in my backyard. By December they all looked dead. I hoped that in the spring they would come back but they only got worse. I called the store and a very condescending man told me that they were not covered by a warranty because I had the kid who cuts my grass pick them up and pay with the money that I gave him for the bushes. If I had picked them up myself or been standing next to the kid at check out then they would be covered. He was so rude and acted as if I were really stupid not to know this. He sounded like he was laughing when he told me "I'm sorry you didn't know". What really gets me is that I told the kid to go to Lurvey instead of Home Depot even though they are more expensive because I thought they would be better quality. All of the Home Depot plants we planted last summer are doing great, only Lurvey failed me. I will never shop there again. read more

There is not a better place in town for your plant and gardening needs. This place is well staffed, if not over staffed, with the friendliest, most knowledgeable employees. I learned so much, and also explored many options at different price ranges. There is a similar place much closer to my house, but we drive the extra 20 minutes because of the extra value of service and knowledge. I agree with some of the other reviews. Lurvey's is my preferred Garden Center for both indoor and outdoor plants. However the experience is ruined by the indoor cashier having a bad attitude. I understand that the customer line is always busy but for the slightly elevated cost - it's not that hard to be friendly and courteous. Especially when there are so many other options to shop at. At first I thought they were just having a bad day but this has happened on several visits. Even my spouse mentioned it. Older lady at the indoor counter needs to understand that not everyone is an expert gardener or landscaper. Take the time to answer questions. read more

Been going here since they opened. Amazingly sweet staff who seem to never have an off day inside & out. I was met by a very nice woman from back parking lot. I didn't know there is no way in but to go around to front . She found me a cart and the plants I was looking for & handed me off to another. The plant I was looking for they hadn't heard of but later I found 2 mixed in with the other colors. They were out of stock for more & only order once. I also wanted Japanese lace red 6' maple but price was over $400. Years ago they had annual opening specials of $20 for them but I lost 2 when a company couldn't get fence they removed back up before winter. They couldn't take the wind. Ironically I saw 2 people at another garden center I had met at Lurveys & they both were looking for the $20 Japanese maples. (I'm not crazy!). They also told me how to get in through the back... It was too rainy to look for the boxwood. read more

Instead of offering to call me back to answer this basic question, remarkably, the employee simply gave up and told me to just come into the store and look for myself. The people here are amazing and so helpful. We've always had a great experience there. We usually go in with an idea of what we want and go to the Information area in the back. They give us great options and are not pushy. We recently got a bunch of shrubs and were able to get the marked as "sold" and then they brought them to the pick up area. The shrubs were then loaded in the back of our vehicle. So convenient and easy. Will definitely go here for any garden/landscaping needs we have. read more
