After an extended email exchange with the LUX team, I was able to set up a consultation phone call with Michelle. In the emails prior to the call, I specifically asked if LUX was competent and comfortable with putting together a team who could service curly/kinky textured hair in addition to a variety of hair types (because my bridal party represents Italian, Black, Mixed Race, and White). In the emails, I was told to look at LUX's Instagram account. Of course, that's how I found them in the first place and had scrolled through all of their photos and features prior to reaching out. After explaining this, I was then told to look at the owner, Caitlyn's, Instagram account because she is their "curly hair specialist." I already followed her account well before this suggestion and had seen 1 Latina naturally curly updo and 1 white woman with natural or permed curly hair. Otherwise, she spoke on her account about loving working with different textures but the photos just didn't show a variety of textures or any natural, Black women's hair. The LUX team came recommended by many different vendors and planners, all of whom are white women with straight hair and pale skin. So I wanted to take the recommendation seriously and at the same time, be sure that LUX would be a good fit for our racially diverse group. I had my phone call today with Michelle. She stated that the phone call must have been set up as the result of a "miscommunication" because she thought I had "other" questions (the questions that I had were whether LUX could style naturally curly and kinky hair textures and do makeup for a variety of skin tones, eye shapes, and skin types). We didn't get that far because right away Michelle expressed that LUX just "isn't a fit for everyone." She again directed me to Caitlyn's Instagram page and told me that she was only having this phone call with me because the owner (Caitlyn) asked her to take the call for her because she was too busy to answer questions. She also stated that no matter which hair stylist I might prefer from LUX, I wouldn't be able to lock in a particular stylist until at the soonest, 6 mos before the wedding date, which (in a world where the rest of this phone call was not discriminatory, unprofessional, and offensive) would never work. TL;DR: Ok. So in sum if you have a bridal party with anyone non-white that is too diverse for LUX to handle. There are tons of makeup and hair artists around ATX who truly work with a range of clients including different skin tones and hair types. Until they can recognize their weaknesses and hire a staff to compete, LUX is just not it. And the few times that they were able to book a wedding with an Indian or Black bride? They are limited to doing Eurocentric styles on people of color. read more

Andrea did my hair and makeup for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in, where we got ready at an AirBnB. I was blown away with how perfect my hair and makeup looked. Andrea did an amazing job!! I have never received so many compliments in my life. My hair & makeup came out way prettier than the picture I gave her for inspiration, my makeup was flawless. I've always been a little more androgynous on the feminine scale so when I came time for my wedding, I was really nervous about hair and makeup in particular. I wanted to look like myself with short hair and natural makeup without having to pay the cost of a traditional bride hair and make up. However, I also didn't want to shortchange my bridal party who all have long hair ranging from stick straight to Shirley Temple curly. LUX had the perfect package for me. As an androgynous bride, I went with their gender neutral service that gave me light hair styling, and basic skin retouching. My bridesmaids had the "I Do crew" package with hair and makeup. Everyone was really satisfied with the flexibility of the hair stylist and the makeup stylist. My makeup stylist Sara Shaikhzadeh was very nice and gave me some excellent tips for hydrating my skin when I went in for my initial makeup trial. She listened to all of my thoughts and I really loved the look she gave me for my wedding day. I felt like she highlighted all of my best features! She also did an excellent job setting the look for the day. I have a bad habit of scratching at my face and ruining makeup, but whatever she used stayed on all day, and felt really light. My hair stylist Ashley Nixon was also very nice and did a wonderful job on my hair! I love using styling gels on a regular basis, but they can be a little stiff looking. She listened to my concerns about stiffer gels and worked with my hair until it was light and textured, but stayed in place all night long despite my aggressive dancing. She also did an excellent job working with all the different hair textures of my bridesmaids. Everyone was really happy with their looks and had no problem dancing the night away without one hair moving out of place. I really enjoyed working with LUX and I would recommend them to anyone for any big events or even if you're just looking for a makeover day! The team at LUX Bridal and Beauty exceeded my expectations. For a little background, I own a wedding planning company based in Chicago but decided to elope near Austin. I have gotten my hair and makeup done many times back home but given our short turnaround for securing vendors (the elopement was sort of last minute), I had no time to do a hair and makeup trial. I submitted some inspo photos prior to the elopement and come wedding day, I shared a few more, and truly both the hair and makeup ladies knocked it out of the park. I specifically worked with Gabi (makeup) and Kelley (hair). It was an early start to the day at an Airbnb (in the middle of no where) but they both still showed up early, in a good way! I booked my trial the same day as my bridal portraits and was very nervous but they made the experience so much fun! Everyone is so sweet and made me feel beautiful and confident!! Veronica did my makeup and Kelley did my hair for my bridal portraits and wedding. They took such good care of me and my wedding party! My makeup was completely flawless and lasted through sweat and tears. At the end of the night, my makeup looked just as good as when it was first done! On the morning of my wedding I asked Kelley to do tighter curls, because my curls fell quickly the day of my hair trial. When she finished my hair, the curls were very loose and not what I had asked for. She admitted she did looser curls than what I had asked for, but she quickly started fixing them. The mistake made us run about 30 minutes behind, but thankfully we left space in the schedule incase anything ran behind. The end result was perfect and my hair looked gorgeous all day! I booked hair and makeup at this salon for my Engagement Photoshoot and was not disappointed at all! They were very kind and accommodating considering I had to start the appointment at 4:30 AM in order to be done by 6:30 AM for my shoot that was an hour away AND it was on Memorial Day! All other places I looked into were either closed for the holiday or didn't open that early. They were literally my saving grace. I had no clue what hair style I wanted or what makeup style I wanted so they gave me examples and helped me narrow it down to what I prefer for my perfect look. I'm not much of a makeup person so they definitely made sure I was comfortable and talked me through everything they were doing. The quality of the makeup was A+. To give you an idea, I was outside from 7:30am-1pm HIKING at Enchanted Rock State Park for my shoot. My hair and makeup looked flawless even after all of that. Sweat and all, my makeup lasted!
