Showed up for my appointment and the desk person told me that my insurance (Aetna) only covers standard eye exams every TWO years. I have never heard of this in a lifetime of getting eye exams. I said that this sounded wrong to me because every insurance plan I've ever had includes one eye exam per year--that's why they're commonly referred to as "annual" exams. The guy said, "Well, the doctor will still see you today, but you'll need to pay for everything upfront." I said that I won't do that because it defeats the purpose of having insurance. Of course at this point, they've already got my insurance. I didn't have time to call and check on my plan/policy there in the store; so I just left. Just checked, and of course my insurance covers one eye exam per year. Maybe it was just a mistake on their part, but it happens to be the type of "mistake" that is often used as a tool of insurance fraud. Awful.

Then, after they charged my credit card, told me that I didn't even need the service I just paid for because it could be done for free when iI went in person at the DMV. I ended up not being able to use the eye exam because the DMV had be read their chart instead, so I tried for a return, but the front of house guy immediately became defensive, angry and rude. He refused a refund but compromised on a store credit, but he knows I'm not coming back as a customer. If i'm being honest, the whole thing felt like a scam.

She was friendly, informative and made the experience of getting your eye sight assessed a breeze. Office Experience: 2/5 Very meh. Maybe VSP insurance is crap but it seemed like you aren't really getting any value. You can either get an eye glasses exam or contact exam. Usually a contact exam covers eye glass prescription but not here. It's an additional cost. Compared to experience of a coworker, we overpaid greatly for contact lenses here. Bottom line: shop around to make sure you get the best deal.

The Dr goes above and beyond showing you your eye health and explains everything throughout the examination. I've also had them repair broken glasses frames at no cost which was really nice. My only complaint is how HARD it is to get in here. They only release appointments one week in advance. You can't call and schedule, you have to use ZocDoc to do your booking. The times are tough as well. Random off hours etc. I just really wish they were easier to work with and would move away from the zocdoc platform for appointment bookings. Everytime I've booked an appt with using zocdoc my personal contact and insurance info gets sold to companies trying to push "free supplements" they can bill my insurance company for. Just incessant telemarketing calls for 6-8 months every freaking time. Unfortunately, I was desperate for an appointment this year and ended up having to go to victory vision care to spend my insurance perdiem simply because I couldn't get it. They were efficient and got my contacts expedited so no complaints using them as an alternative. Will be back in the future, but hope they'll become easier to do business with soon.

It pains me to write this review of Dr Cheng. He has an excellent bedside manner, explains things…read morethoroughly and seems like a genuinely nice person. Unfortunately, my eye exam last month resulted in a significantly weaker prescription than my previous one from nearly two years ago. Dr Cheng explained that this can happen with aging, so I had glasses made from the new prescription. The distance correction turned out to be too weak. I returned for a recheck. Dr Cheng was patient and kind, especially because I had some difficulty judging the choices during the subjective refraction. The revised prescription was slightly stronger in sphere in one eye, but had substantially weaker astigmatism correction, particularly in the right eye. I had another pair of glasses made ... and these are even less usable for distance vision. I am not placing all the blame on Dr Cheng, since the subjective refraction depends partly on my responses. But after I specifically reported that the first prescription was too weak, I do think the recheck should have produced a prescription that was more clearly validated before I left. I have now paid for two sets of glasses with progressive lenses ($$$) that I cannot use and am back to square one, scheduling another exam with a different optometrist. YMMV, but unfortunately this was my experience.

I chose iLook Eyewear based on their stellar Yelp reviews and given that they accept VSP, which I…read morerecently switched to from a comprehensive we-cover-everything insurance plan. Their eye exam is affordable but can be hit-or-miss, so check the experience level of the doctor on duty. Their frame selection is great, though I've only purchased frames from them once. I always find the service to be friendly and personalized. Irwin has been my go-to person. Prescription lenses typically take just over a week to be ready, which is quite standard. One cautionary note: I wouldn't bring horn frames here. Mine cracked along both rims a couple of weeks after I got them back, quite likely due to the lenses not being etched down sufficiently, although I cannot prove it. They were kind to have new lenses put in a plastic frame for no additional charge. iLook does warn of the risk of breakage of horn frames, but for plastic or metal frames, you can rely on their great service and professionalism.
