Off of Route 2A on Lexington Road in the heart of Minutemen country, I arrived at the Hawthorne Inn, my favorite bed and breakfast in Concord, Massachusetts. The owner of the inn, Marilyn, greeted me at the entrance and showed me to my room. The inn is furnished with furniture, art, and artifacts that are representative of colonial New England of the 19th Century with other kinds of art, such as Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Haitian voodoo masks, and 17th Century Persian helmets, scattered about here and there. Walking into my room, I noticed a cat on the 4 poster bed in my room. It was very comfortable, very cozy. I hung out in my room with the cat for a while before going out to downtown Concord for dinner. After dinner I sat in the sitting room downstairs where the fireplace was blazing and I met some of the other guests in the inn. We talked some more in the morning when we ate breakfast in the communal dining room together. Breakfast included your choice of coffee, tea, muffins and other baked goods, a seasonal fruit plate, yogurt, or granola. Rooms at the inn range from $125 - $325 per night depending on the season. After breakfast, I went into downtown Concord to look for an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance, which I found in a book in my room. In the essay Emerson emphasizes the importance of avoiding conformity and trusting in our own ideas and instincts: "Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string...." This spirit of individuality and the belief that there is no problem that we can't handle if we apply ourselves to the solution is what attracts me to New England, to Concord, to the Hawthorne Inn. There's a sense of history there where our country was essentially founded, a creative energy burns there also where so many creative thinkers and writers lived. Walden Pond, the Minutemen Park, the old North Bridge where the "first shot heard round the world" was fired are all in Concord. It's worth visiting to remember that "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles."

Tea and coffee are always accessible and I appreciated the thought the hosts put into having everything a traveler might need available, from forgotten toiletries to office supplies and a printer. My room was small, but certainly sufficient space for a one night stay. I appreciated having a refrigerator and water in my room (and I like how the hotel is trying to reduce plastic waste). Everything was very clean and comfortable and the location, just minutes walk from the Davis T station, was very convenient. The only thing that would make a very nice stay better would be a more comfortable reading chair in the common room or larger pillows for reading in bed.

I flew in late to Boston so I entered the house really late, but there was no problem! At the Morrison House, I stayed at the Little Room - it was very cozy and cute, perfect size for a young girl like myself. The bed was nice and I slept very well. It was also nice to have a heating system that I can adjust perfectly. I shared a bathroom with the guests in the Davis Room, which was no problem because I shower at night and no one else did. The bathroom was kept very clean and, also very cute. I also liked how the guests have chance to meet each other when they all come down for breakfast between 8-9 am. Since I mostly get to talk with people of my age back in school, it was a refreshing feeling to get to know older couples, etc. The Morrison House is in a perfect little college town too. I got to enjoy some great foods, including the hamburger shop that was introduced in Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, one of my favorite TV show! :D The fee was also reasonable, so I would like to give Morrison House a five-star! The host Steven was warm and friendly and took the time to show me around the kitchen and loves getting to know his guests. As others have pointed out, the breakfast is simple, heavy on carbs and a variety of milks for protein. Other than that, I will definitely come back. They had plenty of parking out front and the entire area looks very nice and safe. My room was small but decent. Perfect for a comfortable nights stay. Everything looked brand new. I loved the fact that at this location you can adjust the air to be constant for those that like to sleep with a fan on. I gotta say this had to be one of the most comfortable beds and pillows and the quietest hotel stay I ever had. I was very impressed. They have a nice gym and also a laundry facility which is kinda rare to find. They have a breakfast buffet that is free. The coffee was ok and I liked the eggs the best. The sausage was ok but for free you can't complain. They also had a pancake maker machine. Never seen that before and also had all kinds of cereal and pastries, bagels etc...... I would give this place a perfect 5 star rating and would not hesitate to come here again.
