I had just walked out of the repair shop I usually use after they quoted me twice the price to crack the cover, plus an additional fee for express service that sounded like two to three days, while suggesting parts that may need to be replaced at extra cost on the still-undiagnosed machine. Ok good job. Sam did great work for me, took a broken laptop/dead hard drive and asked him to retrieve the data and see if it can be fixed. He got my data and fixed the laptop too, also made it slightly better by fixing the fan that was heating up too much since my laptop is old over 6 years plus. NEVER again will I take my chances on a Craigslist find for these kinds of services. I found this place on a Craigslist ad for Computer services. Sounded like a decent deal and honest offer. I took my Macbook Pro with my own diagnosis in hand (I work in IT and know my way around a mac fairly) hoping this guy would maybe know more than I do and have some solution that I was not aware of. But it didn't turn out that way. His diagnosis: Bad partition (which I was aware of already) Solution: to erase and reformat the HD for $69 (without saving data) Price with data extraction was much higher. Reformatting my HD is what I wanted to avoid in the first place and which is WHY I bothered taking it in to him. The data extraction price was too high so I turned down the repair and was charged $49 regardless of not having any work done to it. I took my mac home and reformatted the drive myself and had it working in less than 40 minutes. I will say the $69/99 prices are reasonable for the work he is offers to do but a $50 charge for a diagnosis that even I, the non-mac-expert takes less than an hour to do? or that an Apple Genius would have done at no charge???... Heck, even Office Depot wouldn't have charged me. I understand small businesses like these need to survive so I do not mind paying a small fee for his diagnosis.. but a reasonable one and not without letting the customer know BEFORE leaving the pc there. The fee is not stated anywhere in the shop nor the receipt he gives you, nor does he tell you himself. He tells you AFTER he already diagnosed your PC, so he can charge you. Unfair practice. A less nicer and smarter customer probably would have NOT payed. *** Also, beware that the $69/99 prices only cover basic repairs, if parts are needed you will have to pay for parts aside from the repair fee, there are extra charges for certain things such as data extraction and other stuff. read more

This place saved my life! My laptop died inexplicably (wouldn't power on) the day before I was going to take a trip out of town and I had homework/files that I needed to turn in. I was incredibly stressed out b/c the computer wasn't even that old (3 years ish) and I really didn't want to buy a new one. I went to ComputerLand first and the lady quoted me $45 for a diagnostic with a 3-5 business day turnaround, or $95 for a 1-2 business day turnaround, NOT including any labor/cost to repair. I thought it was outrageous, plus the express option wouldn't help at all since I was leaving the day after. She also kept freaking me out and saying it was probably a problem with the hardware and they'd have to order parts, which could be really expensive and take a long time to ship. At this point I was resigned to fail my class and shell out for a new computer, but I decided to stop by American Tech just in case they could help, and they did! They have a flat labor fee of $69 dollars, plus I paid an extra $30 for the express option which had me in an out within an HOUR. Seriously, it was almost instant. The technicians even let me take a look at the inside of the computer/what the different parts were and explained to me every step that they were doing. Sam is the best! Before walking into American Tech I was ready to get rid of my laptop that wouldn't even turn on. A few people already tried to repair it unsuccessfully, but since it was an expensive laptop, I wanted to see one more time if anything can be done. Initially, Sam told me that its most likely a goner, since the motherboard will have to be replaced. However, he didn't give up and proceeded to give my laptop a more detailed look. We are going with Four Stars because although there were a lot of things I could write to the contrary, I want to focus on the positives, while still maintaining a productive insightful review. Also, this review was meant for last year. I took my broken MacbookPro screen in for replacement in early November 2019 but had to call, on my own, to check the status after a full month of no word from American Tech Inc., it seemed as though my laptop was on the back burner and they probably had a lot of other projects ahead of mine, which makes sense with such a small operation...I am assuming and thinking they might also only have two employees....tops...so there's that. I obviously wanted to have my laptop back asap and needed it, since I had been using my work computer which has many limitations because its a company computer. But so, I called them and once I pointed out the amount of time which had elapsed since I had dropped off my laptop, they seemed quick to get the project started but also confused as to how much time had passed...without me calling? As if that was my sole responsibility? I didn't want to be a difficult customer, especially as this was my first time as patron to them....but a whole month without a status update for a broken screen? But here is the kicker, once they finally started work and after a month, aaand after I had called them out on the time elapsed...they called me to tell me that screen I needed to replace was actually going to be $250 more than what I was originally quoted...."ok it's a Mac...that makes sense...i guess..but this should have been a call that was made early on?" was my thought and what I told them. I was upset by the new price but mostly by the amount of time it took to notify me. But I recognize this is a local business so I said you know what, how about this? You refund me and I take my money else where? Right? I mean I won't write a negative review or anything like that, just refund me and we can both move one. What I appreciated about Sam was his ability to recognize that they were in the wrong here, and mind you I was being very accommodating, after bartering with them I thought you know what lets just cut our loses. Sam found a cheaper Mac screen replacement, that was used, and was able to pay the difference...mostly because of the amount of time I had already waited. It might have taken upwards of a month to finally get my computer back but I did.....it was eventually stolen from my parked car in Golden Gate park, but I still appreciate that I was able to get it fixed and American Tech does have their heart in the right place. If you're looking for a more reasonable and personal experience, go here, but also bear in mind they are a smaller operation so you, as a consumer/customer, will need to practice patience but in the end it's worth it. read more

Front desk person was super nice. But that was about it. Whoever is doing the actual diagnosis was simply not competent enough to recognize the real issue of my laptop, which was just a loose cable. Wanted to charge 170(on top of the flat rate of 69 plus 30 dollars for priority) for a whole replacement of pretty much everything. So I took my laptop to another repair shop instead(don't wanna say the name but it's only like a block away) and they fixed it in less than 4 hours and only charged 120 bucks. So I basically wasted 2 days and 40 dollars here when I could've walked an extra block to the next repair shop and got it fixed right away. Wouldn't recommend. The two stars I gave was solely for the front desk person otherwise I would've just given zero stars. read more

Delighted, satisfied customer here. My son and husband decided to build a computer, they bought all the parts and a case, monitor, etc. Problem was, neither one of them had the first clue as to how to build a computer and proceeded to bumble and fumble around around running into various glitches. After many frustrated hours and a bunch of "screw this!" they still could not get a signal from the monitor (worse still they bought it at Best Buy which seems to only sell products that will fall apart or break after approximately seven days). So they didn't even know if the monitor was a dud or if it was some other problem. Enter American Tech, my son and I happened to wander past their store, checked them out on Yelp and decided to give them a try. They came out to our house the following business day (Monday) for off-site service flat rate: $99 and eureka! The dude who works there took it apart, reassembled it and got it working in about 15 minutes. My husband and son spent hours sweating over this thing so I was extremely happy and impressed. Also, there were no hidden fees, straight up $99 for them to come to our house which seemed really reasonable to me. No question I would return if/when something breaks in future. "What about $69?" -- Oh, that's just the flat rate for all repairs; any hardware issue has an add-on charge". I had already purchased a replacement screen and only wanted to put so much additional money into this little netbook. And didn't I see "no repair - no charge" somewhere? Not quite. I never recommend here. Last time I got here for my mac air problem, it took almost 3 weeks to fix, even if they said it would take 3-5days in the first place. In the meantime, they never notified me they would need more time to fix it. I had to MAKE A CALL FIRST if i could pick up my laptop ALWAYS. On top of it, after I got back my laptop after 3weeks, there was still another problem they didn't get done. Therefore, I had to find another store. I usually go to a place in Menlo park that I like but my guy was very busy and it would have taken me a week to get my pc back so I decided to come here even though it was far. Scottie was very nice and knowledgeable, he admitted that he didn't know certain things. I paid 30 dollars extra to have my computer seen that day. My laptop came down with a hard drive virus that erased all my files. I took it across the street to Staples and they estimated that repairs would cost about $200. Naturally I decided to check other offers before committing to that price, so when I found American Tech online, I was stoked about the $99 flat rate. I was even more excited when I brought my computer in and they told me that the rate was actually $69! I left my laptop for a day and they called me the next evening saying that everything had been taken care of, and sure enough it has! They removed 6 malware files, 826 registry errors and tens of thousands of junk files. Plus they got all my stuff back. I'm happy to say that the next time my computer loses it, I'll be taking it back to American. read more

BE CAREFUL going here! After having my PC in the store for 2 days getting a tune up, I asked for a quote to do some upgrades. The nice young guy helping me said that the owner had to do the quote. After 2 days quote was not done so I went into the store. The owner was there and when I spoke to him he did not even know my PC was even in his store. The other guy was working on my PC right in front of him while we were talking. Kind of scary trying to trust the owner if he does not know what PC's are even in the shop. What would happen if the other guy got sick for a few days? If that happens your PC might not eved be found!!!! Yikes!!!! And to top things off, they did not even process the ATM debit card transaction for the fee for the time up. I had to call and ask them to process my transaction! read more

Sam was great: answered every questioned I asked with honesty, respected my need to take another day to consider pricing and ordering, gave expert advice irregardless of how much/little money it would add to my bill, cleaned my computer when doing the repairs, and was a real person. Yes, do they not aaaalways open right at 11am and do I always call before headed over to make sure staff are on hand, yes. But it takes me 30sec to do that. Finding a business established on customer needs and acknowledgement would take me much longer & cost way more these days. I was excited when I took my computer in to be repaired as they had one of the best rates available. Other places wanted to charge double the rate. This shouldve been my first clue that the service would be shotty. I brought my computer in, they repaired it and talked me into paying for an extra *heat coating* to keep my computer from overheating. The issue I was having was the power connection on my dell laptop, of which these laptops are notorious for having this problem. In any case...the computer seemed to work when I got it home, but I noticed if I even just lightly moved the computer the power connection would fail...the same problem I brought it in for. I called american tech and left a couple messages....they never called me back. I tried calling several other times and they didnt answer. I figured they just blew me off so I didnt bother calling them again after a few days. Then, just today, the power connection cut out completly, rendering the computer useless unless I prop the power cord up so its pushed tight into the socket at the back. I called them back several times, and FINALLY got a live person who told me I shouldve brought the computer back to them within 14 days of the original repair....and now Id hafta pay them again to fix it. Its rediculous! They claim no knowledge of getting ANY messages or calls from me. Stay away from them. They'll rip you off and youll lose your money and get no repairs... I suspect the other review on here is a *plant* by the owners of the company since its the only one, and is the same review on google. So I placed my review in both places as well. read more

I wrote a review for these guys after getting my computer fixed. However, when I took it home I found that the repair man had broken one of the keys on my keyboard. With further observation to the keyboard I could see small chips in the keyboard where it looked like someone had stuck a screwdriver down where the keys are. In fact, I referred them to a friend of mine and she also had great service from them. They've given me repeated discounts on a variety of service calls, have stayed for hours fixing a variety of software issues, given me all kinds of phone support on issues unrelated to any of their products or services, and enabled features on my system that I never would've known about. They took two weeks to fix my laptop after letting me know it will take 5 days. Then they charged me ~$250 for a common computer part. It was one third of the price of my laptop but I had to go on, because the $69 diagnosis fee is non-refundable. So when it says $69 flat rate, it is the fee for just looking at your computer and telling you what is wrong, how much it will cost, and how long they will take -- and if you think that the quote is too expensive or the time is too long, and choose not to move on, you lose $69 - plus some storage fee. So it is designed to rip you off. Also, the diagnosis was $69 but I dont know why they charged $99 for me. They told me it was because of "hard work" that they have done diagnosing my laptop. What a sketch pricing scheme. And even it was fair from their perspective, it just was not fully explained in detail, and most importantly, it was not mentioned "at the beginning." They really should have let me know that it "could" cost around 250 "at the beginning" before they charged me the 99 diagnosis fee. I of course asked them for a rough estimate, but they said they have "no idea.." in order to trick me into paying 99 and then moving on with them. To summarize, they took two weeks when they said they would take 5 days, and charged me an outrageous price without notifying me at the beginning, and NOT ONLY THAT, they broke a button on my keyboard. I swear that the button was working really well (I have many witnesses) before I took it to them. When I went to their shop to pick up my laptop, I realized that the button was broken. When I asked them why the button was broken, they said that the button was like that in the first place and was not their responsibility... What could I say.....? It is not like I can bring all my witnesses or anything if they continue to assert that it was broken in the first place..... I loved their service except for the fact that they actually do change the price on you. They first said $69 then once finished they said $89. i had a bad experience with these guys. unfortunately i took my pc to josh. all i needed was a tune up and a Ram upgrade. i didn't know what kind of RAM i need and replace the old ones. that was the whole point me taking it there. anyway he said he'll get it from another vendor which was in a walking distance and replace the old ones. he promised that it'd be taken care of by the end of the day next day. since it was my husbands day off and i couldn't carry it, i was happy that it'll work out for me. the next day around 3 pm i called and asked if it was ready they said that it won't be ready until the next day. i was pissed but can't do anything about it. the next day in the morning they called and told me that it is ready. when i went there to pick it up, the guy who checked my pc for spyware and such told me that they didn't do RAM upgrade becausse he didn't know and other guy was (josh) not around at all. i was very disappointed. all he did was search for viruses and malwares and such and download some windows updates. only for this i had to pay $69 and left very unhappy. i do not recommend this place to anyone. you will waste your money. read more

These guys aren't incompetent or unscrupulous, but in a bad economy and a world where word about customer service gets around quickly, they could work a lot harder to make their customers happy. I had a laptop that suddenly couldn't find the OS. I first called another tech, who had a $30 labor charge who said it was probably a bad hard drive and that this would cost an additional $50. Then I called American Tech, who said that while it might be a bad bad drive, most likely it was a software issue they could fix within their flat $69 labor fee. I explained that I'd only paid $180 for it on Craigslist, that it wasn't worth it to put much into fixing it. Anyway, it turned out it was a bad HD and they charged me $80 the part (bought from Best Buy, they said), so the total cost, after tax was $155. I explained this was just what I'd been hoping to avoid. Tough luck, was basically what they said. It was only a sense of decency that stopped me from just leaving the machine for them to sell. As I was paying, they offered me two "10% off" coupons to use next time I visit. If they'd thought to offer me a 10% discount THIS TIME I might have considered going back. No, they don't owe it to me, but it's good business and they would better be off knowing that. read more
