My experience can't be made positive, but I think M&D acted in good faith. We have a nice well-functioning new lock and some insight into the locksmith business. Unree stars: *** Lured to M&D by the good reviews, I'm disappointed. The locksmith arrived exactly when he said he would but I had to explain an aspect of the job twice. We needed something that I felt sure was easy but how can you argue with a "professional" who says ooh, could be complicated. Installation took about 15 minutes for which we got charged a lot more than what I expected from my phone call where the person who when I asked how much answered said "$25 for coming out, then $75 and up depending on what you need." And up, you say? Up, up, up, up ... also a very different price for cash vs. credit card, which means M&D Locks and Keys probably doesn't like to pay sales tax AND eyeballs the customer to ask just a hair less than what would draw "Get lost, I don't really need you." Ugh. Very prompt, and competent enough, but I don't recommend. Locksmithery is something for which people really need trustworthy online reviews. I moved into an apartment recently that had a second deadbolt without a key, so I yelped for a locksmith, M&D Locks and Keys came up with great reviews and I AGREE! My schedule is crazy and I called about noon asking the soonest they could come out, she said he can be there within the hour, and sure enough 20mins later I got a call from Joey, who said he'd be here in 15-20mins, right on time. He came to my apartment assessed the condition of my locks and recommended just replacing the internal mechanism so I would have new keys and a functioning lock, rather than replacing the entire thing. He was nice, prompt, and professional, he told me what it would cost upfront, which is always appreciated. He was done within 20mins, he showed me the lock, the keys and had me test them to ensure I was satisfied, then wrote me a receipt and called in my credit card on the spot. We just bought a new condo and have been dragging our feet to changing out the locks. We purchased our own keypad lock on Amazon but had trouble uninstalling the existing lock, so we called M&D. Joey arrived in about an hour and was able to help us out. Turns out the digital lock we ordered was less secure than the existing lock, so he changed the cylinder for the existing lock and reinstalled it for us (after we took it apart...in our very "do not know what we're doing" way.) All in all, Joey was great! He was honest, fast, and friendly and helped us to add two screws that were missing from the original lock. I'm certainly not going to attempt to fix any lock issues myself because, hey, while youtube videos are helpful for some, I'm not a professional. Recently I'd been having doorknob and deadbolt lock issues and wasn't really sure of the root of the problem. So, based on all the positive reviews, I chose M&D. Glad I did too! Called M&D locks because I was having a problem with a 100 year old lock on my townhouse in Brooklyn. The lock would no longer lock. After calling a few other places being told the doors would have to be replaced (100 year old iron doors) because the lock is not repairable or replaceable (no lock exists that would fit in the original iron door). Thank goodness for Joey. He was on time and very honest and professional. He was able to disassemble and repair the lock - onsite in less than 1 hour saving me thousands of dollars and headache. I am definitely going to use them again when I replace the rear doors of my house this summer and I highly recommend anyone wanting an honest and skilled lock technician call M&D first. I had a fairly complex project -- removing locks on two distinct doors and replacing them with high-tech Schlage locks. This job required wiring and a lot of cutting; I live in a historic brownstone in Park Slope and wanted to make sure the work was done with as little damage to the old thick oak doors as possible. The locksmith worked quickly and efficiently, and the locks open and close with such ease. I am renovating my apartment and replacing the old mortise lock set and doorknob was turning out to be a coordination nightmare. I wanted to replace it with a Baldwin lock, but they had a 4-5 week lead time for shipment of the product. I had purchased a lock from Home Depot that was available; it turns out I purchased the incorrect kind of lockset. I called M&D Locks and Keys twice. The first time to remove an old deadbolt and replace it with a Schlage Sense deadbolt. Joey arrived and completed the work with quality, fast and at a reasonable price. A couple weeks later, I called M&D to replace the old mortise lockset. Joey told me that I had the wrong kind of lock. Not wanting to waste the appointment - and also go another day without a doorknob on the apartment, Joey went to his vendor in Williamsburg, procured the right kind of mortise lockset for my door that matched my apartment aesthetic, installed it on the door and cleaned up the installation area. Because of my steel door, the installation took a bit of time, but Joey completed it and the lock looks great. Most importantly, Joey completed it on that day so that my contractors could fill in the leftover holes in the door, strip it and repaint it. Thanks for the responsive, quality service as well as the advise regarding the proper locks to put on the door so that it is appropriately secure (he recommended having one deadbolt cylinder with a Mul-T-Lock because of the possibility of someone "bumping" a standard lock cylinder). I've recently moved into a new apartment and called M&D to replace the lock. Leah contacted me and we scheduled a time for the same day. Later Joey arrived and started working on the lock. Apparently, the previous locksmith who put in the lock did a terrible job and even without any knowledge I could see there was a problem with the current lock on my door. Joey offered to replace the whole mechanism instead of the cylinder and seeing the current state of the lock I agreed. He then proceeded to replace the mechanism and put in a mul-t-lock cylinder. He explained every detail to me while he was working and even fixed a slight malfunction with the door knob. It cost me more than I expected but Joey did a great job. I lost my car key and called around for a locksmith. Most were closed, and the few opened on a Sunday were priced at $300 for a copy; not even the remote! I came across reviews for this company and after getting a quote of $220 for a copy of my car key and $350 for remote key, I was sold. It took an hour for the guy to arrive and 45 minutes to complete the job. I was told I could pay with my card by the receptionist, but the technician, Joe, wanted cash which I did not have. Very efficient and helpful. Joey got the job done quickly, explained the differences between the locks, understood my choice and made sure that the installed lock worked perfectly. I was very happy with his work. Guarantees 100% satisfaction on the parts he installed (not the parts that were there before). He didn't try to charge me for anything that didn't need to be replaced, which is a great quality to have as an honest businessman. Initially he was skeptical if the lock plate would come off easily. In the past he said a lock plate was stubborn because the bolts were painted over multiple times, but my bolts worked just fine. He didn't need new ones so he put back the old plate. He had to remove the plate in order to replace the cylinder. The lady over the phone who arranged the appointment was very nice and helpful. She was very professional and efficient. Decent service! We went here to duplicate my Honda key for me dad, so he can have a copy just in case. It was a bit misunderstanding with the price but the guy that we spoke to was in training so its understandable. The total cost was 180 with taxes included (without taxes, it was 160). The address is wrong on Yelp; its located on 140 Empire Blvd closer to Bedford and right across the street from Firestone; diagonal from Burger King. They have little knick knacks in there too like plungers, carts, etc. The guy was nice and helpful. Would come back in the future if I need to. read more

The day after my unfortunate experience with the M&D locksmith (and my initial, negative review about it on Yelp), I received a call from the M&D office-- the lady I spoke with politely conveyed the owner's dismay and his willingness to help rectify the situation. They agreed to refund the labor charges, which would bring the price of their service back down to the original price quoted by their own locksmith (which I would hope isn't too much to expect from a company nowadays :/) Still, i do appreciate the company's efforts to contact me and help make amends-- that level of customer service *does* go beyond what I've experienced with most other companies. My opinion of them has improved immensely, and personally I probably would use them again in the future. read more
