I was in town on a business trip and staying at the Courtyard Marriott next door. My colleagues and I went to M&J's for dinner and had a very pleasant experience! Good food and friendly staff in a homey atmosphere! The buffet had plenty of options and the food was tasty. The price was very reasonable and the folks who worked there were kind and helpful. I was a bit worried about coming here because of the mixed reviews, and I want to share that they are unwarranted - this was a nice place to grab a quick dinner! read more

This is not a fancy place, but it was comfortable with a local country station playing in the background so you could still visit. It is cafeteria-style, so you help yourself and everything was neat and clean. The food was good home cooking- pot roast, roasted and fried chicken and fried fish, fresh salad makings, and country vegetables like mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and greens. I would DEFINITELY not give more than two stars, here is why. The food was nasty. Except for the chicken livers. The pies were okay but tasted like a box. No food had seasoning. My wife and I were initially hesitant to try this place due to some of the reviews but we are so glad we did (22 June 2024). The hot bar, salad bar, and dessert bar were well stocked and delicious. Everything...everything we tried was outstanding. Service was very friendly and amazing. Refills flowed before my cup was even half empty. The ambiance wasn't bad for a home cooking buffet. Worst experience for our first time in this place on a Saturday. It costs $15 per person plus $2 for a Soda. It is clean but the food is horrible. Cornbread was hard as a rock. Canned pudding for dessert and Frozen Cheesecake from a box. There was a birthday cake type dessert that you could tell was homemade with very thin frosting that you could see the cake through. This was a hidden treasure! I hate buffets on a normal day but this was a welcome surprise! 90% was homemade food like grandmas house at lunch on Sunday! REAL FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (best I ever had at a restaurant)!!! Shepards Pie, Mac & Cheese, everything you can imagine from grandmas house and more! I love M&J's. Always good fresh vegetables. This is about as good as an all you can eat buffet as you will find anywhere. I always get takeout. I've usually get three two go plates. Food was cold, even though they have heating lamps. The fried catfish tasted like it was rotted. Fried chicken is bland. Mash potatoes was so thin and no flavor. The greens tasted like it was cooked in dirty dish water. Mac n cheese was horrible tasted like it was the cheap kind and nothing done to it. M & J Home Cooking is exactly what they describe themselves as, a country buffet. The buffet costs $9.00 all day long, and there's a lot to choose from. The menu varies a little depending on the day of the week. I came here on a Tuesday and the menu was as follows: -Meats: fried chicken livers, meat loaf, spaghetti w/ meat sauce, baked chicken, Salisbury steak w/ gravy, fried chicken, and baked chicken -Vegetables: turnip greens, cabbage, mac & cheese, corn, yams, mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, butter beans, rutabagas, and home fries -They also had a salad bar, fresh rolls & cornbread, chicken & dumplings and vegetable soups, and plenty of desserts, including banana pudding, ice cream, and a few different cobblers & pies. My favorite buffet items were the mashed potatoes, cucumber salad, and yams. The rest of the food was fine. The macaroni & cheese was a little bland, but I fixed that with a little salt. I didn't love the spaghetti, it tasted like it was seasoned too much with some kind of Italian seasoning. The fried chicken livers were dry, but they still tasted good. Customer service was awesome, great showcase of that southern hospitality you always hear about! My mom and I were greeted as soon as we walked in the door by smiling faces. They seemed genuinely happy to see us. The dining room was pretty big, and the girl seating us asked whether we preferred a booth or table. We had a couple different girls checking on us while we dining and they made sure we never ran out of our drinks. Everyone was very friendly from the time we walked in to the moment we walked out. Let us begin with the good parts. This is an all-you-can-eat buffet. The waitresses were quite nice and the customers appeared cheerful. We paid nine bucks apiece, which was also a pleasant surprise. But that's all I can write. The Golden Corral this place is not! Now for the flip-side. HOW THE HECK DO YOU BURN COOKIES?!? And that's the tip of the cliché iceberg. You know what's the best part of the food? The salad. At least it was relatively fresh. Then I came across something called "Brunswick Stew." It looked so tempting, I ladled out a huge bowl of the stuff. But once I took a shovel (there are no teaspoons available) --BLEH! Is it just me or do 外國人 (Americans) put sugar on everything? And WHY? So I moved on to something else. Ah! Cornbread! You can't mess that up, right? WRONG! It was both hard and stale. Then I looked for something else. Collard greens? Too salty! String beans? Also drowning in salt. Anything else? FRIED chicken. FRIED fish. FRIED okra. FRIED potatoes. FRIED green tomatoes. I've had the latter before at the Cotton Patch Café; those were pretty good. Not here! Finally having had enough, I moved on to the dessert, which is like a religion for me. The Jello was pretty good. How about the strawberry-bready looking stuff? Ew, I'll pass. Same with the peachy goop. Both looked more like slime than cobbler. Vanilla soft-serve was decent. The best dessert by far was some kind of pink cream pie. And like I said earlier, I don't know how you can burn cookies. Well, yeah, you leave 'em in the oven too long but who does that? Last but not least, this joint really needs to change its paint scheme! Babysh-- yellow isn't exactly appetizing. Will I ever return? Only at gunpoint, but not by soldier gunpoint. Hamburger steak looked like Stouffers family pack hamburger steak from the frozen foods section except the gravy they serve here is just brown water with no flavor. My family loves a good Buffet. This is a southern cooking style. The salad bar was great. All was fresh and plentiful stocked. There was only the choice of iceberg lettuce which is not my preferred but not unexpected at a buffet setting. There were plenty of cold sides such as Coleslaw. The main entre items were also well stocked and cooked. The fried chicken was perfect and delicious. The fried green tomatoes were great. My family was able to get a variety of foods with plenty of vegetables to choose from. There is only about three table area (they put two tables together) in the back to accommodate a family bigger than 4. This isn't really bad but one of the tables were very wobbly. This was distracting while trying to eat and feed a small child. The main reason for the 4 star is the dessert. The dessert were disappointing. Something was off About both the cobblers (under cooked?) and the pecan pie. None of the dessert was Very appetizing. read more
