I ate one chicken strip and my baked potato, and as usual, I saved my roll for last. When I picked it up, I discovered a large bug smashed into the side of the roll. We immediately took the roll to the counter to show the staff. They took it to the back, and we waited about 10 minutes with no update. At that point, I was already feeling nauseous thinking about the possibility that I may have eaten something contaminated. We walked back up to the counter to see what was taking so long and were told they were waiting for the manager, who had apparently "run to the store," to come back and handle the situation. We then waited another 30 minutes. During that entire time, not a single employee came out to check on us, update us, or apologize. When the manager finally arrived, the situation only got worse. There was no apology, no concern, and no attempt to make things right. Instead, she was rude and dismissive. She actually told us, "Next time this happens, bring it up right away so we can swap it out." That response left me completely speechless. First of all, we did bring it up right away--the moment I saw the bug, we took it straight to the counter. Second, saying "next time this happens" raises a pretty concerning question: is finding bugs in food something that happens often enough to have a standard response? Yes, she eventually comped my chicken strip plate, but it was done with such obvious rudeness and attitude that it didn't feel like customer service at all. The issue was never just the cost of the meal--it was the fact that I found a bug in my food and was treated like I was inconveniencing them by bringing it to their attention. Finding a bug in my food was bad enough. The complete lack of urgency, accountability, professionalism, and basic courtesy from management made the experience far worse. Mistakes can happen anywhere, but how a business handles them says everything. Unfortunately, this restaurant handled it terribly.

Last week, The Barn Door announced on Facebook that its final day of service will be Sunday, May 11th (Mother's Day). The Barn Door has been an outstanding steakhouse in the truest sense. They've never relied on gimmicks or culinary trends--they've relied on the tried-and-true flavors that have maintained a loyal clientele for decades. I'm taking about hand-cut, primal cuts of beef grilled over real mesquite, delivering that unmistakable South Texas char. I'm referring to plump, wild-caught shrimp from the Gulf Coast, the famous yeast rolls, and tubs of homemade salad dressings. If you've been there, you know how special the overall experience has been. I've read many heartfelt comments on social media asking why such a successful institution would cease operations. Well, dear reader, I have a unique insight into why. Randy Stokes has poured his heart into the restaurant, but he merely leases the building--not the land--from the Straus family. Approximately seven months ago, Mr. Straus decided to sell the dirt beneath the "Barn" to a real estate developer. The plan? To raze this historic site and erect modern condos. It's a familiar story of urban expansion, but it doesn't make the loss any easier to swallow. But before we close the door on "The Barn" forever, a glimmer of hope looms on the horizon. Randy Stokes and his team aren't necessarily hanging up their aprons for good. According to a reliable anonymous source, the team has expressed a desire to reopen The Barn Door at a new location, with eyes set currently on the city's North Side. I hope the promise of a new location comes to fruition, but even if The Barn Door closes forever, I will cherish all the wonderful memories of dining there with my parents and grandparents over the years. I will remember the ingratiating staff, the unique ambience, and the hundreds of delicious meals I've crammed down my gullet.

The Mexican influence is evident by rice and beans accompanying most meals. Tonight we went with the chicken fajitas,(with salad and rice) and chicken fried steak (with white gravy, french fries and "salad"). Both were pretty awful. The rice on both dishes was cold. The chicken fajitas had no flavor and while the portion was large the staff only provided two very cool (temp) flour tortillas. Both plates' salads had hard, no flavor tomato slices and no salad dressing, just the tomatoes and shredded lettuce. The white gravy on the chicken fried steak had a very strange flavor and the french fries were lukewarm. (When I ordered the chicken fried steak I was asked if I wanted the frozen one or the homemade? What I asked was the frozen? Apparently what is available is either a commercially prepared entree or a homemade. Maybe I would have been better off with the "frozen".) When the waiter asked how our food was gave him an honest appraisal telling him we were disappointed and that the lack of salad dressing was disappointing. His comment was we should have asked for some, it was available. I replied he should have offered. The waiter did consult with the manager, he (the manager) however did not come to our table to address any issues we had with the food but he did take one of our meals off the check. Maybe going with a steak would have been better, but it might be awhile before we would give this restaurant another try.
