About a month ago, my check engine light came on, so I stopped by O'Reilly Auto Parts in Walnut Creek for a quick diagnostic. The codes pointed to an Air Injection (AIR) Pump issue; never a cheap repair on a Mercedes. After calling a few independent Mercedes shops, I was not thrilled about the thousands they wanted to charge. When I called O'Reilly's back to order the part, the guy helping me mentioned Mr. Kim at M&N Auto Service, saying he sends a lot of customers there and they're always happy. That was enough for me to give it a shot. I called M&N, got a quote from Mr. Kim, and I honestly couldn't believe it...about half the price of what the other shops quoted. I dropped my car off yesterday morning, and by the afternoon it was done. Mr. Kim was professional, straightforward, and incredibly efficient. Not only did he fix the AIR pump issue, but as a last‑minute request he also replaced a parking light that had gone out. He even checked my tire pressures without me asking. It's rare to find a mechanic who takes that kind of initiative. What really sealed the deal was the personal interaction. We ended up chatting about Korean food, and he told me exactly what to order at Ohgane for the best LA‑style BBQ meats. We were laughing as I left; just a genuinely good guy who knows his craft. I've already referred two family members to him, and one has already gotten their car back and is just as happy with the service. He charges the going rate for routine services, but he will not push non-necessary work on you. I have had 3 different vehicles of my own in and out of the shop with maximum satisfaction and several vehicles of the company I worked for 15 years before retirement. Major and minor repairs. I have paid him to check used cars before my purchase or purchase by my family members and friends. If you think he asked me to write a glowing report, you are wrong. The car has very low miles on it (75k miles) but Kim is always very thorough when checking out the car and is the most knowledgeable and honest mechanic that I've ever met. I cannot recommend this place enough. On Saturday I realized that my radiator fan needed to be replaced because it was knocking dangerously loudly, and every mechanic I called either did not have the availability, or did not work on Volkswagens. One mechanic recommended that I call M&N because he knew Kim worked on Volkswagens. I drove over there, he took a look under the hood and told me he could special order the fan, but that it would not be there until the next day, Sunday and he does not work on Sundays. I rely heavily on my car, and need it for work on Monday. I asked him if he had any advice for me, and he told me that he would come in on Sunday his off day, and repair my car for me. I paid an absolutely reasonable and fair price, and he was nothing but kind. I will absolutely be becoming here, and I recommend anybody who drives a Volkswagen to bring their car here. read more

This place is the best! Mr. Kim is thorough and professional and absolutely honest about what needs to be fixed and what doesn't. When I first moved to the area and found myself in need of car maintenance/repair, I called four different places for estimates and this places was the cheapest by hundreds of dollars- no exaggeration. The next few times I needed my car serviced, I followed the same procedure- called around for estimates, and always the cost of repair here was consistently only two-thirds of what everyone else was charging. We have been going to M&N for several years now and Kim and his crew have worked on our Ford F150, Mercedes and our son's truck. The level of service is superb and the pricing is very good. Kim always manages to figure out what is wrong and get things fixed, right the first time and in an excellent time frame. In example, my mom's car diedy yesterday. She took it to Kim's last night after hours. Kim looked at it this morning, told her what was wrong and had it finished by 2pm! When I dropped her off there was a Ferrari parked outside of his shop and it turns out that the dealerships are having him look at their used cars to assess them. Very cool. I trust all of our cars to Kim and HIGHLY recomend him. Oh, one other thing, my husband had a pretty bad accident in our son's truck. The body shop that we used did an excellent job but there was a squeak that they could not figure out. They said it must have already been there before the accident. We knew that was not true. We took it to Kim and within 10 minutes he had diagnosed it, a crack in a busihng or bracket or something (I am not a car expert) that was totally due to the accident. Been have my car repaired done with Kim for couple years. I have a 2002 VW, but only has 120,000 miles on it. As a customer, I want my car repair, done and go, but not sure if my car is getting old or what, since one incident got fix in this place, more problems occur, and my car is in and out of this shop multiple times in last two years. Until my AC went down last April 2017 and Kim said is the compressor and replaced it. I agreed. But less than half a year, the AC goes down. I told Kim the AC not working in Feb 18, he said it was not hot enough to inspect. Ok, I come back in April, he said the same, then I back again in July, put my car in his garage for a week, no response or notification for what's wrong and how to fix it, until I called and KIm said he still figuring out . All the sudden, a day later he left me a message and said the compressor is fine, but the valve had to be replaced coz it was blocked my debris and charged me another 500 buck. I'm very patient and as long as it's get fix, I'm cool and that 500 is not a lot for me. But you know what, after less than four days driving on the street, a loud noise came from the engine, my car loose power and my car stall on the street and almost got an accident with cars behind me. I'm devastating. Manage to put my car to another mechanic and the inspection result said. "Compressor forzen, belt torn and smoked, complete replacement required". I'm so angry and called Kim and you know what he said, the compressor is only covered under 3000 miles or less than a year. It is not under any warranty any more." KIM, I DONT CARE it is covered or not, and I don't want you to touch my car anymore. My point is your poor work had put me and my family in danger. This is worst than unprofessional . read more

Mr. Kim and Brandon are awesome! Rewinding a little...I had to replace my spark plugs on my 2010 Nissan Sentra. The Nissan dealership was gonna charge me $800 for the darn thing. Fortunately, my uncle Jim recommended me to see Mr. Kim. He replaced my spark plugs, changed my brake light bulb, and even replaced one of my engine's hoses (sorry don't remember what) for half of the dealership's quoted price... I am a happy camper. Then, just recently, my car suddenly stopped at a busy intersection. I meant I could not move at all...blah blah...I got my car towed...blah blah...to Mr. Kim's place. The next morning, Brandon came in, opened the hood, and found the problem! The cap on the hose of my inlet air to the engine fell off, that was why I could barely start and could not move the car at all.Thank God I thought I was in big trouble... Anyway, Brandon found the cap somewhere inside the goodness under the car hood, and he put it back for me, no charge! Love him already... :) I highly recommend this place! I had my brakes replaced by another company (shares the same parking lot as M & N) and what a terrible screeching noise came out of the back right brake. I took it to them 4 more times! You do not get the uneasiness that you get when going to the dealership repair shops where they swindle you of your money. All-In-All: Very great service, good quality work and done in a timely fashion. I brought in a broken power steering pulley pump (the old and a new one) as well as the pulley wheel which had a broken off shaft stuck in the middle. I was unable to remove the shaft from the center (with tools and 300 lb helper) and so I called a local machine shop which recommended this place. I brought it in and (Kim) said he would take a look at it. He mentioned he would give it a shot and call me by the end of the day. Well he was able to get it off and he even installed it onto the new power steering pump! The only reason I didn't give a fifth star is that when I came in to pick it up Kim was not there and one of his helpers called him. The helper then told me it was $50 bucks. I don't know if that's what Kim told him but I just feel it was too much, and left a question mark in the back of my mind. read more

Honest and capable. Brought in my Mazda because the power seat was not working. He quickly diagnosed the issue to a broken motor cable, but was unable to find the part for me. I spent a few hours online, found the part on eBay, and he was able to perform the labor to install it for a very reasonable cost, compared to what the Mazda dealer was quoting me for. I learned about M&N Auto four years ago through a roommate that took all of his vehicles to Kim. He told me Kim's garage is the best kept secret in the east bay for fair and reliable service. I couldn't be more happy. I now live in South San Francisco and happily drive to Kim's shop for a simple oil change. I was putting an average of 35,000 miles a year on my Hyundai and Kim always kept me on the road. He's done my vehicle's timing belt, serpentine belt, clutch replacement, brakes, electrical issues, oil changes and regular service. Kim is a former US Marine and, as such, holds himself to a high standard of excellence; in his committment to service and his estimates. I have read some of the whiney reviews posted and find them laughable. A successful mechanic always has multiple cars in service and gets them out the door quickly. Kim performs like aces. I don't normally write reviews on Yelp (or anywhere), but in this case I felt like I need to share my experience here today. I've been going to Kim for all my car troubles for several years now. My brother is a car hobbyist, and we all have heard stories about the dishonest mechanics out there (who "fix" problems that aren't really there, or make new problems that will need to be fixed in the future), so we are especially cautious about who we trust with our auto repairs. Kim is awesome - extremely knowledgeable as well as honest and fair. Don't expect him to coddle or beat around the bush, he will be straight to the point and straight forward, but you can rest assured that he is keeping your best interests (for your vehicle and wallet) in mind. I recently had some potential transmission problems in my 2003 Honda Accord (after letting it sit for about 2 weeks while I was out of town), so I brought it in for him to do an assessment a few days after, change the transmission fluid if needed and see whatever else needed fixing. He ran the diagnostics, made a thorough assessment, drove the car a couple times and looked into all my concerns, but the car was no longer acting up at that point. The diagnostics looked fine, the gears shifted normally, and the transmission fluid looked totally fine. He recommended I just pick it up and drive it a few more days like normal, and to just bring it back in right away if I felt it acting up again. He didn't even want to charge me for the assessment since he didn't think any fixes were necessary at present. With some other mechanic, I would NOT have been surprised if they changed the fluid simply because I suggested it, even if it looked perfectly normal, just so they could make some money...but not Kim. He told me he didn't want me wasting my money on any unnecessary services, considering they were unlikely to be the cause of the initial glitch I felt. That type of honestly and transparency is hard to come by these days, so you'd definitely be doing yourself a favor to take your car to M & N Auto next time you have any concerns. read more
