Finally had the chance to stop into M&S years after seeing a story online about this magical place. For over 100 years they have been hand making fabric flowers here in NYC's garment district. They have a small Etsy shop but the factory has a massive selection that was shown with the utmost pride and enthusiasm by the staff who clearly take pride in the work they do. They offered to take any flower I selected and put it on a stick pin, hair clip, and other backing. I ended up with 3 and had them add stick pins to wear on my lapel. All 3 stunning. They also do custom flowers made from your own materials. Talk about meaningful sentimental gifts. I will surly be back! read more

A hidden gem! Prepare to get inspired! Whether you're a bride, a designer, a stylist, a DIY addict, or just someone who is in need of quality silk flowers, you MUST know about M & S Schmalberg! I found everyone there, including the owner, to be very friendly and extremely helpful, and the flower options are endless. I came here in September with a very specific floral design detail in mind for a designer dress I was wearing to an award ceremony. I had no idea what to expect, other than what I'd read from previous reviews on Yelp. When I arrived, I was directed to the back area where all the silk flowers are housed, organized by color and material in aisles of neatly stacked boxes. As I began to search and take it all in (with SO many flower options, it can be overwhelming), a woman immediately asked if I had any questions or needed help. She began pulling out boxes of flowers that I was interested in and told me to just leave them out--she'd put them away, no problem. As I came closer to finalizing my little floral design, I asked a few of the ladies if I could get their opinion. This is when it got fun! They were SO personable and helpful, and TOTAL EXPERTS on their floral-design craft! One of the women began to arrange my picked-out flowers into a beautiful design that was exactly what I wanted. Rather than try to recreate the design by myself, they told me they could bind it all together to ensure the wires of the flowers don't show and so I could just pin/sew the flowers right onto my dress. And so they did it in about 45 minutes! The cost for it all was about $125, which is a bit more than I had anticipated spending, but honestly, it was all worth it! They wrapped the thing up for me in a box to ensure it wouldn't get smushed and wished me a wonderful time at the event. read more

I visited this flower shop last year and unknowing to me this is the shop who makes many if not most of the camellia flowers for Chanel! They also did many of the flowers on Sex and the City series and the movie! The owner Adam was so gracious to host me and gave me a quick tour of the factory! I was so impressed.. I got some really unique pieces.. they actually let you roam through the boxes choosing what you like! I miss this about NYC! and whats most impressive is most if not all the owners like this remember who I am and are so happy to see me! read more

This is a reputable and exceedingly high quality custom flower manufacturer. My only problem had been with inconsistent and very "elastic price quotes from the owner. This is the normal. Pricing has historically been available ONLY from the owner. It changes frequently. Would appreciate consistency and an established price list. read more

I love this place!!! I got married this summer and had a vision of wearing flowers in my hair instead of a veil. After speaking with my florist, it seemed like silk flowers were the way to go since real white flowers were probably going to wilt and turn brown over the course of my outdoor ceremony and reception. My bridesmaid and I trekked all over looking for the perfect flowers, but everything that we saw was too big, flashy, and expensive. Luckily, the father-son team at M & S Schmalberg came to my rescue about a month before the wedding. I knew the minute we walked in and they were nice, normal people that things were going to work out. There's so much craziness involved in wedding prep, it was nice to have one tiny portion of it not be drenched in insanity. Their store is incredible, packed with beautiful flowers of all types, and they make the flowers right in the back. I found a lot that I loved, but none that were totally perfect for my vision, so they set us up with boxes of petals to choose from, and I was able to create flowers that were exactly what I wanted. The owner himself sat with us and put together a sample flower so that we could make sure it was what I wanted. He then agreed to make a dozen of them in two days for the cost of a single one of the blingy flowers I had seen everywhere else. He called me each day that week to give me updates on my flowers and was altogether amazing, He even gave me and my friend each a beautiful silk flower barrette. I cannot recommend this business highly enough. As I write this, I'm trying to think of a new use for silk flowers in my life so that I have an excuse to go back. Studio Tour:Exceptional behind the scene of skilled artisans in the garment district of NYC. I have an immense appreciation for hand made/local passionate businesses. This is one of those businesses that manufacture bespoke flowers, and other accessories for leading designers, milliners,the list goes on (I don't want to spoil the tour). I couldn't believe my eyes and thoroughly enjoyed the 2 hours that I spent in this space. Warren was fabulous and explained the process from start to finish in creating their designs. His team were so welcoming. I was able to make some silk flowers in their studio with the overseeing of one of their team. I'll be recommending this tour to my friends who are visiting NY. I read about M&S Schmalberg in Martha Stewart Weddings but was unprepared that a visit to their New York showroom and studio is like visiting the mother ship of custom silk flowers. Bring M&S Schmalberg fabric from your dress or just a piece of fabric that you like and they can create unique flowers for your dress, your hair, your bridal veil, or whatever you have in mind. They create many of the silk flowers and headpieces featured at Kleinfeld's and other high end bridal shops, and are perhaps best known for that giant flower Sarah Jessica Parker famously wore in Sex and the City. They also have a very large stock of samples and if you have an idea of what you are looking for they are happy to direct you around their drawers of fabulous and unique flowers. I chose several small, ivory-colored cabbage roses with leaves which they quickly fashioned on to hair clips (a very reasonable $5 per clip) and which I easily tucked into my hair on my wedding day. Everyone at M&S Schmalberg was a joy to work with and this is a family-run establishment of people who are the best at what they do. Call first to make sure it's a good time for you to come by, and give yourself enough time to poke around and get to know the staff who will be working with you to help you create what you want.
