Around Christmas, a long one in light pink caught my eye. The choice of large pearls in a single strand was bold. Yet on a petite woman, it turned out elegant. More than once, I took a treasured piece to Tansey. Shortly after the lock down, she restrung a gift from my mother from long ago. Her discerning eye assured me of the special quality of the piece. In front of me, her large hands began knotting between the pearls. In no time, I was presented a "new necklace" with a mysterious glow. She also replaced the clasp of a three strand necklace for me. The piece with baby pearls was once made for me. But the strands tended to entangle. After Tansey retied them to a clasp designed especially for the three strand, the dormant piece suddenly came to life. Walking down Nassau Street near City Hall reminds one of the changing flow of Life: a man's hat shop on the corner had an arresting display of wool cap, leather cap; a fancy chocolate store had young ladies dipping fresh strawberries in dark chocolate in February. The warm atmosphere at Tansey Tang will be missed when the final curtain call arrives at the end of March.

They have a small Etsy shop but the factory has a massive selection that was shown with the utmost pride and enthusiasm by the staff who clearly take pride in the work they do. They offered to take any flower I selected and put it on a stick pin, hair clip, and other backing. I ended up with 3 and had them add stick pins to wear on my lapel. All 3 stunning. They also do custom flowers made from your own materials. Talk about meaningful sentimental gifts. I will surly be back!

I came here in September with a very specific floral design detail in mind for a designer dress I was wearing to an award ceremony. I had no idea what to expect, other than what I'd read from previous reviews on Yelp. When I arrived, I was directed to the back area where all the silk flowers are housed, organized by color and material in aisles of neatly stacked boxes. As I began to search and take it all in (with SO many flower options, it can be overwhelming), a woman immediately asked if I had any questions or needed help. She began pulling out boxes of flowers that I was interested in and told me to just leave them out--she'd put them away, no problem. As I came closer to finalizing my little floral design, I asked a few of the ladies if I could get their opinion. This is when it got fun! They were SO personable and helpful, and TOTAL EXPERTS on their floral-design craft! One of the women began to arrange my picked-out flowers into a beautiful design that was exactly what I wanted. Rather than try to recreate the design by myself, they told me they could bind it all together to ensure the wires of the flowers don't show and so I could just pin/sew the flowers right onto my dress. And so they did it in about 45 minutes! The cost for it all was about $125, which is a bit more than I had anticipated spending, but honestly, it was all worth it! They wrapped the thing up for me in a box to ensure it wouldn't get smushed and wished me a wonderful time at the event.

And it's surprisingly affordable -- there were some incredible prints in (so glad to see the artists' names were clearly labeled!) for $15-$20. It's a tiny shop but it's jam packed full of all sorts of interesting novelty and artisanal products. Some of the things I saw were beautiful hand made pottery, jewelry, key chains, stickers, paper products such as postcards, and zines. There were a few handbags and clothing on a rack outside the shop as well. I believe the inventory changes every few months. I can't wait to go back to see what new products they'll have available.
