Located in a small plaza across from Costco on Beach Blvd, the MC SALON is next to the phone carrier store. Parking is free for the customers and there are plenty during the weekdays. Just got my hair cut here on recommendation of my friend who tried out this place on recommendation of her college friends. I also looked it up on Yelp and saw all the great reviews. I haven't gotten my hair cut professionally for yeeeears but Esther did a fabulous job and renewed my love for getting professional haircuts she was super nice and able to fit me in her schedule a few days out. She's really sweet and amiable, and got me in and out quickly in about 30 minutes even with washing my hair and cutting off about 7 inches and with layers! The studio outside looks sus because of all the posters but it gives privacy. Inside it's bright and clean and modern. So many positive vibes. Love my new look and feel super fresh. I went without appointment and was entertained well by Esther and her colleague, they are Koreans who know how to speak very good english they understand what I want and what I need. I asked for top perm and undercut it was a tough job but them manage to pull it through as perfectly as I want it to be. All throughout the process I was treated gently and I never felt rushed. Before we started I ask for a quote on what I want it should cost me like $90 but she gave me a good deal both haircut and perm for only $50. He is very skilled and professional, who knows what he is doing. Last time, I highlighted my hair and bleeched my hair....love the results and my hair feels so soft and moistured. Not damaged at all...was very surprised. Will take my whole family and will go there again and again. He also cut my mom's hair...she has short hair and you know when someone does a good job or not by waiting couple of weeks to see if the cut is still good or not. I've been coming to see Esther for the past year in a half since we moved to this area. I found her through the great Yelp ratings and have been satisfied with my haircuts every time. She has been trained through Toni & Guy and used to work at one of their salons, but eventually opened up her own place. She charges very reasonable prices for stylish haircuts that are up to date. This is not your typical Asian hair salon where you tell them you want an inch off and then you're missing 4 inches. I've always had the length of hair I wanted, bangs included. Sometimes I just ask her to give me a new do because I trust her with my hair! Like what some other Yelpers have mentioned, Esther takes the time to listen and asks questions to ensure you are getting the haircut you want. If you have a photo of a haircut you like, she'll be honest with you and tell you whether or not you can achieve the same look with you hair type or face shape. I just went in today to get a digital perm with some of my girl friends (plus our babies!) because we have heard about how it is less damaging to the hair shaft and also gives you more of the wavy, tousled look. Basically, this ain't yo mama's perm! I had no idea how it would turn out with my hair, but Esther guided us step by step and assured us it would look great. In the end, the results were fantastic and we were all very satisfied with our hair. She uses a modern heated roller technology that is much less damaging than the first wave of digital perms. My hair still feels healthy, which is very different than the past body perms I've received. I've posted a photo so for those of you who are interested in getting a digital perm, hopefully the photo helps you visualize what it might look like! *Note: It's normally curlier at first, but settles in within a week, sort of like a traditional perm. Oh, and if you have children that are coming with you, go on a weekday when there are less people. Esther enjoyed seeing the babies and we had a ball at the salon today with our snacks, drinks and everything, it was pretty much an all-afternoon hangout. All in all, I've recommended many of my friends to Esther and they were all very happy with their haircuts/perms. To start this lengthy review, I specifically wanted a digital perm. I had one done in 2009 and it was AMAZING. My stick straight, thick, heavy, coarse, long hair remained very curly well over year. (It stayed curly until I cut the curly/ permed areas off.) Perhaps that was the anomaly. I honestly don't know. But that digital perm lasted well over a year. Did it relax some? Yes, but any passerby could always see that I had "curly" hair. Fast forward to 2014. I really really wanted curly hair again. It's so fun, so easy, just tie it back in a pony tail and it looks effortlessly cute because of the curly "tail" I searched Yelp and found this place, which is conveniently close to me, too. I called around to a couple of different salons. Due to my strange work schedule: I work at a popular retail store, so always work weekends and my shifts change day to day, week by week, I knew it would be difficult finding a salon who could accommodate me. Luckily (or unluckily), Esther was able to. Perhaps her open availability should have clued me in (versus the other salons and stylists that had more and more successful reviews specifically for a digi perm-- they were more booked up). I hate looking Asian. I am Asian, so it's unavoidable. But some of you will know what I mean. Some hair cuts, some clothing styles, just SCREAM Asian. And I swear, digi perms + layers usually screams Asian to me. So I did NOT want layers. Of course, I go in and Esther STRONGLY advises me to allow her to give me layers. I express my concerns, I show her on my phone photos of layered digi perms that I do NOT want to look like. Still, I trusted her since she's the expert. And you guessed it. I feel like I walked out looking like an Asian cocker spaniel because of the layers. I was a little taken aback. With my first digi perm, no stinky perm solution/ chemicals were used, but Esther used them. Fine, okay. Also, the first time, it was wicked wicked hot. Like, "whoa, be careful, youz gon' burn my scalp off" hot but w/ Esther, it wasn't even as warm as those old school bubble air dryers. I've felt hotter hand held hair dryers. Still, I figured she knew what she was doing. As an aside, just like Anne L. from Fullerton wrote in her review, there was no assistant around, and Esther herself did everything for me and she also thoroughly doused my back. Brr. Chilly and uncomfortable when you're sitting still for another 1-2 hours. Still, at the end of my visit, yes, my hair was curly, but no where near as curly as it was in the past. Despite my reservations, I just was hoping for the best and hoped that it might magically get curlier. Even though, all common sense and logic would say otherwise. Sure enough, within two weeks, my hair would only appear curly if SOAKING wet. No combination of hair styling product, no fancy overpriced hair diffuser (that I also purchased from Esther) would hold my curls for longer than 2 hours. I'll attach a photo from that very first afternoon and one from today-- 3 months later, but truly, my hair has been this "flat" for months. I literally can get my hair more curly by tying it in buns while still wet with virgin/ non-permed hair than with this $200 digital perm. (The $200 included a surcharge for the layered cut I disliked and didn't want in the first place, the $15 diffuser, and a very healthy tip.) To Esther's credit, when I called much later (because again, of my working in retail, I basically had NO time from late October, when I got the perm until now after Super Bowl Sunday to actually see a stylist), she told me to come in so she could see it in person. She basically said it was looking "good" and that since it was so much later, she couldn't do anything for me. She halfheartedly "offered" a trim, but since my last cut from her was so stellar, I declined. That's fair. Even if I don't like that. Fine, maybe I should have simply called in to work, I should have found someone to give up my shift to, losing more money, to go and have her re-perm my hair that second week after the perm was first done. So that's my bad. I guess. Shrug. But, I still wanted to write this review because I don't want someone else to be in my position. Basically, maybe, just maybe, Esther's right for you. But word to the wise, most successful stylists are booked solidly. Open availability usually means something. And if you have the SLIGHTEST dissatisfaction w/ your service, be sure to let her know. Immediately. Or you know. Ask just someone who has awesome looking hair where they got theirs done and save yourself the trouble and go there. I'm now resigned to look for another place and shell out another $200 only 3 months after having gotten my perm. read more

The Verdict: It's been about 2 weeks since my haircut from this salon and I am having a Bad Hair Day every day! The Impression: It's very friendly place, friendly staff and the price is ridiculously cheap (so I get it why some people have 4-5 stars). If you are looking for simple trim I say it is the perfect place to go but if you were looking for a styled cut in any way it needs a skill, I highly encourage you to stay away. The Hair Cut: My hair was super long almost to waist length. I was pretty tired of my kids pulling on my hair. I asked her for a simple layered shoulder haircut that is easily manageable. What she gave me was choppy mushroom head haircut with super short bangs and very hard to manage haircut. I just don't get it. The whole time she was cutting my hair she was saying I look so much younger with short hair (what is she saying, I look super old?). I honestly think I could have given myself this hair cut blindfolded. It's horrific. Yes, HORRIFIC! For those of you who want to know how much I paid for this hideous haircut, I paid $30 and paid $10 in tip for messing up my hair. This was the first time I visited this salon, and I was very impressed! Like all the other reviews have mentioned, you should call to make an appointment before going to the salon. I called at 10am (opening time) and Esther (the owner) was able to fit me in at 1 on the same day! Esther is kind and very detailed when cutting your hair. She helped me cut my hair into two ponytails so I could donate it, then she cut and styled it slightly above shoulder length. It took about 40-45 minutes including a shampoo and blow dry, which is pretty quick considering I have a lot of hair. I will definitely come back when I need my hair cut again! read more

I'd gone through so many different stylists at higher end salons in San Diego, (Pacific beach and La Jolla to be specific). i was paying triple what Esther charges and was always just satisfied each time. then, I've recommended 4 other girls who have all become regulars. I first found out about Esther through my college roommate back in UCSD, who always had these rockstar haircuts that looked like they came straight out of a magazine. When she told me she only paid $25, I couldn't believe it! I could have sworn she'd gone to some high end salon. As it turns out, before Esther opened up her salon, she did work at Newport beach as a color specialist for Tigi. WORST hair cut of my LIFE!!! I came here because of the good reviews. First off Esther needs to remove the "walk-ins welcome" because when I walked in at 5:30pm last Wednesday and I said "hi, I was wondering if I can get my haircut" her response was: ....pause....pause, yeah um okay since you're here." WTF?!? I then said "its okay I can come back." To which she says "no its fine you're already here." And unfortunately I stayed. In a nutshell, I wanted a trim (layers and a trim to my bangs) she was trying to be nice but overall it's like she took a weed wacker to my hair. On top of the there are NO WORDS to describe what my bangs looked like other than I was mortified. Greetings! Back when I lived in the area, my family and I went to this place quite regularly. And when I'm around the area and my hair is a little fluffy I always do what I can to swing by to get my hair did. My parents from Seattle even make point to grow out their hair and get their haircut from here because Esther is great and always makes us special and very comfortable. She also noticed how handsome I was so I suppose she has great vision, which helps her to be such a great hair stylist. But seriously she's pretty great and I'm totally digging my haircute.
