Went in for a magic perm + cut since over call she told me it'll be $250. She asked how much length the cut so I asked for a slight trim but she ended up chopping a large portion of my hair (make sure she cuts the RIGHT length u ask for). The perm procedure took place (slightly different from the traditional, normal straight perm process since she did the neutralizer step while my hair was soaking wet dipped in their washbowl.) She also cut my wet hair while it was still soaking wet immediately after rinsing my hair post the breaking bonds step, instead of blow drying and flat ironing it (other places cuts ur hair while its dry). After she blow dried my hair after the final rinse, she charged me $270, different from the price she gave me at the start of the process saying "haircut itself is like +$30." I won't ever be returning due to this scammy malpractice *** update below: I told her that I prefer English but doesn't mean my Korean sucks which would cause miscommunication in the pricing. I was never communicated in either Korean or English that the price was an estimate, I was given a solid price no range or the word "about" was used during the call. I was never informed before the service that there would be extra steps in the service due to my hair condition - this should have been communicated before so I can decide whether or not I'd be able to pay the extra $20, instead of receiving upcharge price after all those additional "steps & curls" which I never asked for. The curls could have been done with a curling iron myself after the cut + perm, I never asked for permanent curls. I never had a single bad of this experience at any hair salon. I am honestly hoping for a hair undo and refund/my money back if possible read more

EDIT: J reached out and offered to fix it, unfortunately I am leaving the city but I appreciated the offer. I asked for more bangs than what I currently had, mid to long layers, and a little bit of color to add dimension (specified that it didn't have to look exactly like the picture bc I had layers but I just wanted somewhat of a dimension added color wise that was pretty natural). Cut is fine, she said she couldn't do anything about the bangs but I didn't really mind that, my bangs had been cut before and were relatively short so I understand that being hard to work with. However, the color is not at all what I asked for. On the top half of my head it reaches the roots in what looks like streaky highlights, and the bottom half looks entirely colored. The color looks like fresh bleach rather than the "chocolate brown" color we had specifically agreed upon, and I'm going to find toner and try to fix it myself. I am genuinely incredibly disappointed with my service especially considering I was very clear in what I wanted and that I was charged 300 dollars. I was really looking forward to getting my hair done and almost cried upon seeing the results the morning after, and when even more of the color washed out in a shower. After many years of contemplation about getting a balayage, I finally decided to try it. I called J and scheduled an appointment, then needed to cancel the appointment very last minute due to personal reasons. J was understanding and allowed me to re-schedule my appointment in the following few weeks. I arrived for my appointment at 9:30am and left the salon around 4:00pm. The entire process was long and tedious, yet J made it as painless as possible. She was honest with her thoughts/opinions regarding the color/style I wanted, and I was absolutely in love with the end result! She used a technique that was much more difficult and tedious because she knew I wanted a more natural look. Other places quoted me around $500 for balayage and $60-80 for cut, and J charged me a much more reasonable price for cut and balayage combination (: I'm very happy to have finally found my go-to hair stylist, and would highly recommend going to J for any hair styling needs! Yes, I am that girl who gets her hair cut maybe every 2-3 years and never found the importance of maintaining good hair health and finding a good hair professional...until I met J. I'm impulsive and I'll randomly cut my hair super short after growing it for 3 years, mess up, then forcefully go to any nearby salon to get it fixed. Yup, you guessed it, I did it again this year hahaha but thankfully I stumbled upon J's shop. This review is for the both times I've stopped by. The first visit was for a haircut to fix my previous attempt at cutting it short on my own heh. She quickly addressed the scabs she saw on my scalp and notified for me to change the shampoo I'm using because my scalp was so irritated. I've been scratching my scalp more than usual these past few months, but just kind of brushed it aside because I didn't think much of it. But after changing out my shampoo per J's suggestion, my scalp has been less itchy! Not only does she do an amazing job with hair cutting&styling, but she also is knowledgeable when it comes to scalp and hair care. My second visit was today (about a little over a month after my first visit) to get a straight perm. J graciously took me in even though I made a last minute appointment & did such an amazing job on my hair! I was a bit hesitant to get a straight perm cause I was worried about permanent damage, but if my hair can keep looking this silky and smooth, take all my money!!!! Sooo in love with the results! I originally wanted a cool toned ash brown balayage, but I had previously bleached and box-dyed my hair and after the first bleach with J, it seemed that the color wasn't lifting as it should've. She suggested bleaching again but warned it would really damage my hair, so instead we went with a warmer tone. My skin is warmer toned, so this worked out better anyways! My hair is very thick and dark, and I really appreciate the time and effort J put into dying it. I'm also grateful for her honest opinions! If I could give negative stars I would. I don't know how this place has 5 stars. So.... I own my own salon. Unfortunately we don't do hair. I had a client cancel last Tuesday so I put it out on YELP if anyone was available for bleach and toning with a trim. J reached out to me first and what a MISTAKE that was. I was quoted $129-$199. Okay sounds good and she was able to take me right away. I got there and informed her I was highly allergic to color. I can only do bleach with toning. She proceeds to start foiling my roots. I noticed there wasn't the bleachy type smell so I mentioned this to her. She kinda giggled. So anyhow she proceeds to put me under a light. As I am sitting there another client walks in. So she rinses me and puts on a toner and starts working on the other client. I sat in the bowl for about 30 minutes. My neck is still swollen and sore (more on that in a minute) she rinses me out and tells me I have to come back for a haircut! What she hasn't even brushed my hair. I told her I would wait. She said 30 minutes. So I waited. BIG MISTAKE! I wanted a trim with long layers. She insisted on curtain bangs. Well now I have no hair left in front of my face. She framed my face, which I told her in the beginning I did NOT want. I'm just going to finish this off quick. Everyone says what the hell happened to your hair. There is no blending of my roots. Still have 3 inch roots and a bleeding swollen head and neck. Burns all over my scalp! I am devastated and to top it off it cost me $290. I asked her why and she said because she added olaplex and the haircut and I have lots of hair. Well I didn't have lots of hair and now I have none. Looks like my 4 year old grandson took the scissors to it. Even other hairdressers are asking me what the hell happened to your hair. I am now broke and devastated! Good luck with this one. I have the toughest luck getting the short hair style I want. I've had salonists try to talk me out of them, trim my bangs way too short, etc. This is after I show a reference photo too. J gave me an honest opinion on whether the hair style I wanted would work for my face shape. She explained that she would make some small modifications, but would cut my hair as closely to the reference photo as possible. I appreciated how she explained what she was going to do and why she was going to do it. The entire experience was really nice. J is really friendly and gives advice on scalp and hair care. I have thick hair so when I get bobcuts, my hair tends to flip outward at the ends. She spent so much time meticulously snipping at the hair under the top layer, and it worked wonderfully. this has been a long overdue review... because i've always been too scared to leave a review on yelp. however, after a month of contemplation, i felt it was necessary. so i showed a picture to J of what hairstyle i wanted. she told me she's not sure if she could give me what i wanted because 1) my hair is thick 2) i have a lot of hair 3) my hair has a wave pattern. which is pretty cool because all the salons i've been to just look at the picture once and then start cutting. it was nice to get some input from a hair professional to see how my hair can look the best. however, she considered all these factors AND figured out a way to get as close to the picture and absolutely killed it!!! she took what i said into account (such as not making it short and wanting bangs) and DELIVERED. the week after i got my haircut, i spent a whole month in korea, and i got a LOT of compliments from people saying they liked my hair. one girl even asked me where i got my hair done so she could go haha (unfortunately she's from europe). i definitely recommend getting your hair done here!! just make sure you have a clear vision of how you want your hair to look (such as showing. a picture), so J can help you achieve it :). read more

It can be quite frustrating when communication is not good with your stylist and they're not asking the right questions or understanding what you want so it's important that your stylist understands and listens to you. Joan was able to do that and was able to fit me into the perfect schedule and time and her response is very fast. I was in desperate need of getting my root highlight touch up and toner. Hair can be such a sensitive subject to be worked on so communication with your stylist is super important. She asked important questions and we communicated very well on what I wanted and I got exactly what I wanted and more. Omg her head massages are so awesome when she's washing you out! She showed me and used only top shelf quality products to do my hair. I have dark brown Asian hair. The service that I got was root touch up highlights and toner.
