Having read the earlier reviews on the chaos @ the Naturalization ceremony, I pondered deeply for a few days and planned out thus:
1) Arrive at the venue LATEST by 5.30 am
2) Park as close to the exit to make a fast get away
3) Carry food, water, flask of coffee
4) Carry cash - just in case
5) Wear warm clothing - temperature was in the 50's the whole week
However, I could make it to the venue only by 5.59 (had an accident on Hwy 59 - of all days in my life, on this day !!!!).
My queue number was 5 - and hence allotted the West side to Park; and enter.
There should have been about at least a 100 cars already parked on the West park by 5.59 am - but I was able to find a spot without much issues; though not near the entrance as originally planned.
By the time I reached line 5 it was 6.04. Of all lines here (total of 5 lines from line 1 through line 5), this line had the lowest number of people - just 8 people ahead of me. The other 4 lines had at least over 25 people each !!!
Through the glass panes we could see USCIS personnel busy setting things up
We were let into the building just before 7. In about 5 minutes, I reached the officer who checked my Invite letter, verified the answers and signature; took my Green card. And gave me a Green colored slip with my Alien number and asked me to proceed to the stadium. By 7.10, I was already seated - I was able to choose a prime place to sit and watch the proceedings; plus make a quick exit.
The next 2 hours went by chatting with my neighbor, reading on iPhone, making phone calls, going to the rest room etc.., Inbetween announcements were made.
Ceremony began at 9.05 am with the presiding Judge entering. What followed was a short, but very well run and moving ceremony: flags brought in and hoisted by Houston Police department officers; a short welcome speech by the Judge; Oath taking; approving of naturalization; pledge of allegiance (sung by school kids from a nearby school, brought in as special visitors) and a beautiful rendition of the national anthem by a District court official, with music accompaniment.
All over in 15 minutes flat !!!!
Exit was in the order of the color of slip given earlier - green ones were first (first come first served basis). We were asked to go to the same line where we had surrendered our Green card in the morning (line 5 in my case). I was in my line in about 3 minutes - again about 8th in my line. In another 5 minutes I reached the Officer, who showed me my Naturalization certificate and asked me to verify all details - name, DOB etc.., all of them were correct.
As I walked out, I handed my voter registration form at a counter (these forms were distributed to us just at the end of the Naturalization ceremony).
Out of the hall by about 9.30. And out of the premises and on the road by 9.35 !!!
As you can see my account is totally different from the other entries of this year - according to me this was because having read the earlier nightmare stories, I prepared well and reached early; and was spared the hardship.
People who reached after 6.30 would have faced difficulties.....bear in mind that from about 6.10 an average of about 50 cars would be entering the premise EVERY MINUTE...... so every minute matters... I advise people to reach the lines latest by 6, preferably by 5.30.....else be prepared for difficulties
All in all a well organized and run ceremony....thanks to USCIS officials, District court Judge and officials, Houston Police department.
A total of 2173 people were Naturalized - from 123 countries !!! Happens only in America - the greatest country in the world. read more
