For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place…read morewith bars on the windows, and just enough grease on the table to write your initials - then this isn't it. This is a barbecue joint (anyplace that serves barbecue is, by definition, a joint) just off the highway in Valdosta, Georgia... and worth all the confusion created when Waze takes you a block too far, and Yelp says they're about to close their doors for the day, which just wasn't the case. The Woodstack BBQ Tavern came into being in 2015 when three guys bought an old liquor warehouse with a monstrous photo of the Budweiser Clydesdale team pulling their famous wagon spanning the front wall. No deal if the building didn't come with the Budweiser mural. Two of thee three, Justin and Randy are running the place now and about to open another in Thomasville. For a guy who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read my more than 120 barbecue reviews from across the country on Yelp), this is a jewel worth all the confusion finding them and finding them open. Other reviews touch on the friendliness and they're right on... call for info (are you open, Yelp says you're about to close), to when you come thru the door, place your order and pay the tab, it/'s like your back home neighborhood diner. Lisa seems to be keeping things under control out front while folks in the kitchen keep the great 'cue coming. And at good prices. We had the three meat special (with two sides) for $28, but only after some freshly cooked, well seasoned pork rinds ($11 for a healthy serving)... Burnt ends (started by Arthur Bryant in Kansas City more than 50 years ago) were tender, flush with flavor and a great choice. The ribs were good complete with a validating smoke ring, but the best of the threesome we gorged on was the pulled pork. Some of the best the Brown Shoe Gourmet has enjoyed in some time. We skipped their fries (frozen with seasoning) and had their homemade chips (excellent), slaw (slaw that was just that) and fried Brussel sprouts for the one amongst us who doesn't understand that's not a legitimate barbecue joint side dish. She raved about them and made sure there was some left to take home. Go figure. Turns out we missed out on one of Woodstack's best known sides: homemade onion rings. Who knew? Sauces? Yes, three of them: a thin pepper and vinegar, a mustard based sauce and the traditional very slightly spiced tomato sauce - by far the best and worth buying. And while a lot joints now give you half ounce cups of sauce (or make yu stand in line to choose from too many (City Cue are you listening?) Woodstack puts freshly filled bottles on the table. What a novel idea - sample without holding uo a line- letting the customer decide which sauce and how much? A negative? There was one. No colorful tee shirt to add to the collection of more than 200. The dining area is spotlessly clean as are the rest room; the foods is really good and almost all homemade (they use post oak as is the wood of choice throughout Texas) and the hospitality, led by the smiling ball of energy that is Lisa, is outstanding. Five stars to Valdosta's Woodstack. We'll be back next trip south.

This place was a very family friendly restaurant offering a variety of bbq meats and comfort food…read more The service was good and the food will keep me coming back again. We started with chipotle hummus and an order of the pork rinds. The pork rinds came out still popping. It was so yummy seasoned perfectly and pair with a sweet jalapeño dip. The hummus was topped with feta. I wished the pita was not so crunchy but it was still good. The main dishes were all great and the portions are large. We had the battered shrimp, burger, and chopped steak. The sides all were good. My favorite was the buttermilk fried okra and Brussels sprouts. Don't come if you're on a diet. It's hearty southern comfort style food that will leave you in a food coma. There were still other menu items I want to try. I've been told to ask for the burnt ends, but when we went, they did not have any.
