Mac N' Out is a comfort food eatery that opened in Darien, Connecticut in June 2013. It was founded by Kate Voll. Growing up in a home with three sisters, Voll had several years experience of working in the kitchen as well as her parents' food establishments. After graduating with a degree in finance, Voll came up with an idea to open her own eatery. After some experimentation with her sisters in their parents' kitchen, it was decided that Voll's comfort food eatery would be exclusively dedicated to macaroni & cheese: a dish that most people have grown up with. The first Mac N' Out opened up at the Interstate 95 Northbound service center in Darien, with a standalone location opening in Milford the following month. The menu features at least 20 varieties of macaroni & cheese (from traditional to Mediterranean to Mexican) as well as "mac munchies", "mac wraps" and "Mac salads". Following the success of the first two locations, a take-out only location opened in Bridgeport in 2015. As of 2026, only the Milford location is still operating. I recently visited Mac N' Out with my younger son while we were in the area. It just so happens that my younger son's favorite food is Mac & cheese, so he was delighted to have lunch at an eatery that exclusively serves the classic comfort dish. We were so overwhelmed by all of the different toppings and flavor varieties. My son ordered the kid's portion of "Grandma's Mac" (white cheddar & American cheese), which came with apple slices and juice. I ended up ordering the "Fourth of July Mac" (Hummel Beef Franks, applewood bacon & cheddar cheese). This combo was very nostalgic for me, as my mother frequently made Mac & cheese with cut up Hummel hot dogs for me when I was a little boy. Both dishes were served to us still simmering in miniature cast iron skillets. The mac & cheese is very hot when it comes to you, but it's so delicious! I paired up my dish with a bottle of Foxon Park White Birch Beer. My son and I had a great experience at Mac N' Out and we would love to return to the future. Second visit here because I was extremely disappointed a month or two back from my first visit Walked in about noon on a Saturday, the place was steady with takeout with no other guests dining in I was greeted warmly by the young lady working the front. Trying to stay safe and basic, ordered the plain macaroni and cheese, so I can get a baseline. I also ordered a fountain drink. With the tip it was $15 and change. I took a seat after filling up my fountain drink, and waited about 10 minutes for the mac & cheese As I'm waiting for my order, a Scooby Doo cartoon is playing on the not needed television in my left ear. From my right ear, I'm listening to the staff worker in the kitchen singing to what sounds like Italian music. Could've been Spanish music. A little bit disturbing, as the music and the worker were both quite loud Within 10 minutes, my order arrives. The cast-iron pan with the macaroni and cheese in it, a couple of napkins, and a fork. Now I may be old school, or maybe I'm missing something. Why can't this restaurant serve the food with a plate and a spoon for serving out of the cast-iron pan? I'm getting older. I'm not in college or high school anymore eating food out of a cast-iron pan. I actually like to sit down and enjoy a plated meal, whether at home or out paying good money. The only exception I could see would be grinders. But I want a plate here! And if you're gonna serve it in a cast-iron pan, I want a spoon. I was expecting a flashback to the awful mac & cheese I had last time I was here. Instead, I got a very creamy cheesy sauce and an almost al dente elbow macaroni. The serving was generous in the small cast-iron pan. I did find myself using salt and pepper, as I didn't taste any seasoning at all other than the breadcrumbs on top that I mixed in, with this order So I'm gonna stand with four stars, even though I almost want to give it another three. Thank you to the gracious server, without you, it would've been back to three stars. In closing, I drove an hour and almost 20 minutes down to retry this place. I went out of my way..... For future reference, for in door dining guests, it really would be nice to serve plates with the mac & cheese, and the cast-iron pan and maybe over a pot holder. EXCEPTIONAL! Don't even pay attention to any review but this one LOL! I came here after a friend asked me to try this place out - I walked in and was met with so many different mac and cheese combinations that are prepared on a piping hot skillet. They have Mexican, Greek, American, BBQ, and so many other options to choose from - it was so hard to pick! Ultimately, I went for their Philly C Mac in a size small. I was kind of worried about the size and considering it was $15 but let me tell you, looks are deceiving and there is plenty so choose your size wisely lol! This mac and cheese was the best i've ever had, if you love your mac n cheese truly cheesy, this is the spot for you. The ribeye was well seasoned and tender along with their mac and cheese itself, and it was just cheese pull after cheese pull. I enjoyed every bite and glad I had leftovers because I have been craving it again and again! I also tried their April Special, Chicken Bacon Cheddar Mac N Cheese Bites and those were also a win in my books. Perfectly fried, a ton of filling, and the housemade Chipotle Ranch was a perfect pairing. An Amazing and different find. Wanted to try something different and this place is different. Huge menu on wall and specials that day they had st patty specials. Tried Mambo Mac with eggplant, and a Mambo with chicken and a Grandmas. Definitely wanna go back try Buffalo chicken and BBQ one. Had different sizes depending on how hungry you are. Small came out and at first I was like I should have gotten bigger size but once you dig in it was more than enough for me. It was soo cheesy and the Mac wasn't mushy it was perfect and super hot. They use Barilla Mac which is a great brand that I love. The eggplant was so soft and tasty went really well. Chicken was tender and tasty. And reg Mac was cheesy good with crunches on top. Loved every bite. Plenty of tables. Employees super friendly and patient thankfully because reading whole menu then trying to pick the one to try, yeah it took long time. The cheese balls were great to, not greasy, nice crunch. This place is in small plaza off Boston Post Road across from Tesla Dealer. I've driven by never noticed. Tried 3 different Mac n Cheeses. All were really delicious and would happily order again. The food was still hot when we arrived home, packed well and had plenty of sauces and melty cheesy goodness... always a requirement in great mac n cheese(s). NO dry old stuff here! The food looks fresh. Plenty of crumb top on the French Onion and flavors were full blown. Yeah good eye rolls with each dish. The French Onion had this lovely sweetness to it and soft golden onions just like you would find in french onion soup. The Buffalo chicken was a full frontal punch of flavor. Wow!!!! Definitely going back. Hopefully they will have the lobster mac next time. The Santa Fe and the Philly Cheese sounded great as well. 2/3/19 Mac & cheese is a great comfort food, especially on a February day, coinciding with "Toilet Bowl Sunday", as I call it.. Unfortunately Mac N' Out missed the mark for me & my dining companion today. She opted for the 4th of July Mac & Cheese which had Hummel Brothers (great hot dogs) hotdog slices in it. Not a good sign when the hot dog pieces are the highlight of your lunch. The rest of it was pretty tasteless. The same was true of my order of Sloppy Joe Mac & Cheese. Very little flavor of any kind to be had in mine. Not even the spices could save it. No spice-no cheese flavor.... nothing at all. When all you do is mac & cheese, it needs to taste really cheesy to hit the mark, and neither of these dishes did that. Too bad, cuz this place has potential. Oh well, check off one more mac & cheese specialty restaurant from my bucket list. I won't be returning here. read more

Stopped in yesterday after some shopping. It was a suggestion from a friend. I was unaware of the place honestly. Interesting layout for sure. It has tables in the front and a few off to the side by the door. It feels a little disconnected and has a weird flow. Portion sizes are huge and the prices are fair. I ordered the Buffalo Mac and cheese. For me, the Buffalo wing sauce was good and the pasta was cooked well. The negatives for me was that the chicken was sort of sparse and it had a lot of celery in it. It sort of dominated the dish. We stopped here before a movie at the Connecticut Lost Mall. The distance between them is tiny so it's a perfect non-mall meal before hand. This place is casual but clean on the inside with a decent amount of tables for eating in. The macs come out hot in a skillet sizzling still which is a fun touch. They have a large menu of different max & cheese variations but I kept it simple with the Harbah which was a lobster and lemon butter version. I thought it was good, nothing out of the ordinary, but not disappointing. My partner didn't like his Philly Mac and cheese. We hadn't planned on stopping here, but I'm glad that we did. The original plan was to hit Mr. Cold Cuts, further up Rt. 1. Unfortunately, they are closed on Sundays. We were looking for something a little different than the local chain restaurants. I checked Yelp for area restaurants, and came up with Mac N' Out. My husband tried the Chili Mac (he's a traditionalist), I had the Lobster Mac and the little guy had the Mac Bites. Cheesy, yummy goodness! I had to ask about the lobster, before I ordered it. It's real! The ratio of lobster to pasta was perfect. The meals came out in individual skillets. The small portion is probably enough for two (if you split a salad). I wouldn't know. I ate the entire thing...and I would do it again! The Chili Mac was exactly as I expected, cheesy and chili-e! The Bites (3 to an order) were fried to a golden perfection. They were crunchy on the outside, warm and gooey in the center and covered with a great sauce sauce. Looking forward to our next trip to the Milford area! read more

Macaroni & Cheese lover here. Right here! Pasta? Cheese? Together? Perfect. I stopped over one night in Connecticut while on my way to NYC. We went to Mac N' Out before heading to the train station, because the friend I was with raved about it. I was excited and I was not disappointed! It was St. Patrick's Day so their special of the month was a Dublin inspired Macaroni & Cheese, which had (I think) irish sausage, onions, bacon, potatoes and maybe something else but I think that was the most of it. I was a little nervous because I really wasn't sure how it would taste, but WOW. They need to make this item regular! I don't know if people would eat it because it sounds so weird but it was delicious. Warm, creamy, and a different take on regular mac and cheese. They gave a hearty portion which was steaming when it came out. We took it to go though we did have some while in the joint because we couldn't resist. It stayed warm in its container, thankfully, and we inhaled the rest of it on the train to NYC. I loved the bacon and sausage.. The sausage especially. I wish there were more! Other than that though, I really did enjoy it. One friend had the normal mac & cheese and used the gluten free option, which she is really thankful they have because sometimes it's hard to find delicious food that is also gluten-free. My other friend had the Mediterranean Mac & Cheese I think? Which she really enjoyed. And it looked pretty delicious too! Finally made it to Mac N' Out for lunch yesterday, after my co-worker yelped about it last year and highly recommended it. I was very impressed with the interior, which was very modern looking and absolutely spotless. The floors, tables and whole place was extremely clean. I was glad I studied the menu online prior to going in there, because the menu board (descriptions) were a little small and I would have been awkwardly squinting to read each description. Maybe it's just me and my eyes, but I recommend knowing what you want before entering. I got my lunch as a to-go order and got the smallest size of the buffalo mac. Sizes come in small (mini-mac), medium (mid-mac) and large (mac n' out). Like others have stated, the smallest size is deceiving...looks too small, but it is more like 2 servings (I had it for lunch and dinner!). The have about 15 standard flavors and they had a special chicken bacon ranch mac advertised on the counter. Definitely something for everyone! My buffalo mac was steaming hot, even 10 minutes after getting back to my office. It was a perfect blend of spicy-ness and cheesy-ness. The chicken mixed in was also very tender and all the flavors mixed well together. I'm happy to have found another great lunch place! read more

Wait, I haven't reviewed this place yet? Love it. Better than MacDaddy's, in my opinion. Almost exactly the same menu (it was supposed to originally be a MacDaddy's, but due to legal issues...they are NOT affliated.) However, the portions are slightly larger (I didn't think it was possible!) and the ingredients are clearly fresher. They absolutely keep a gluten free kitchen as well (yea!), so I can eat 90% of the menu. The staff is super friendly and the dining area--though sparse--is always kept clean and put together. I've tried a majority of the menu (gluten free versions!) and I still come back to the Hamburger Mac and the French Onion mac. Both are loaded with cheese, but the flavors definitely break through. Tried this place for the first time. It seemed like a great late night stop. There was no one inside too, which I appreciated with the current state of the environment. I had their "Grandma mac & cheese", the cashier didn't really tell me much about it or what was on it. He didn't really speak to me, all he did was tell me the cost and take my money and hand me my food. Maybe he had a long shift and was ready to go. Anyway, I paid and took it to go. Got it home and it was smoking hot still. So I thought great, but when I took the first folk full. It didn't have any taste at all. It was just hot. It was very very blend and had no seasoning add at all. Also, I didn't like the flake crumbs on top at all. They weren't baked in, they were just added on as a last minute thought topping and didn't add anything to the meal at all. It wasn't a good first experience. Really great Mac n cheese made to order. I've never eaten in, I always get takeout. They run about 25 minutes for a takeout order. We have tried the hot dog bacon Mac, the Buffalo chicken blue cheese Mac, the grandmas Mac (classic) and the mambo Mac with eggplant. Everything is always great, the prices are a tad steep, but you pay for quality. The pasta is Barilla which is what I like to cook at home too. They have some great local soda and iced tea options, and deep river chips, as well as rice crispy treats or cookies to go with your Mac. It's in a small plaza next to a pawn shop, so the location is not ideal but it's definitely worth a trip. read more

Just a weird combo and the Mac and cheese tastes like NOTHING. If the one thing you do is Mac and cheese the Mac and cheese should be At least kind of good. At the very least be cheesy. Awesome Mac and cheese, gourmet, great variety. They even have salads. You can get gluten free or wheat pasta too. We got the Mediterranean, I added fresh tomatoes I top. It had a good amount of spinach, maybe could use a little moe sundried tomato but not much. Only thing I didn't like was that the olives on top were pulverized instead of sliced or halved. We also got the bbq which also was tasty. Wish that the bbq pork meat in it were chunkier or larger, instead of finely shredded little tiny streaks of meat. The cheese on both seemed to be of good quality. Everything came out hot and fresh, which is great. I was originally a little worried that everything may not be freshly made, but it was! Well, this place is exactly what it sounds like. You truly mac out when you eat here. The place is a order and sit down type restaurant, they will bring over your meal to you but you do have to grab utensils and napkins yourself. They have dozens of different types of macaroni and cheese combinations, from traditional to clams casino mac. They have three different sizes, the small is more than enough for one person although on first glance you may not think so. On my first visit, I ordered the clams casino mac and cheese and my boyfriend went with a more classic broccoli and chicken mac. Mine was ohhhhh so good. The macaroni was cooked al dente and it was oh so cheesy. There was a decent amount of clams and it was topped with oyster cracker crumble. After enjoying our first visit so much we returned less than week later with some friends. This time I decided to try something new and got the Backyard BBQ mac. It was a little weird to the taste, a couple hours later I was sick to my stomach. I don't know if it was just too much cheese or the combination of all the flavors. My boyfriend and friends on the other hand loved what they got. Overall I would say if you love mac and cheese this is a must try, but stay clear of the weird combinations. If it sounds like the flavors wouldn't work well together, they probably don't. The staff is friendly but seem somewhat bored since the small, slow paced environment they're working in.
