My husband and I went for dinner tonight and have been there several times before. We had the burgers, which are very good but the French fries we were served tonight were burnt and soaked in grease. I did advise the staff who told me it would take too long to get another order of fries but I could have mashed potatoes- no thanks- not with a burger. We spent well over $100 tonight and very disappointing that they would not give us fries that we could actually eat or at the very least adjust our bill. Subpar is about par here. We were seated at the bar and were not given menus, but only a brief "she'll take your order" and pointing towards the bartender. The bar was empty save for a family that were struggling to order as well. Between trying to order from the bartender and the hostess, there were a lot of backrubs and reassurance. Not needed. We waited for a menu... and waited...and waited. We finally had to beg one off the family next to us, and were told that menu was the dinner menu, and we could order off the bar menu which also wasn't there. We finally ordered off the dinner menu: Chicken Saltimbocca- Boiled chicken with some prosciutto tacked on, covered in mozzerella, side of angel hair pasta. Chicken Wild Mushroom Marsala- Again, Boiled chicken topped with spicy-SPICY- mushrooms and spinach, angel hair pasta on the side. Saving grace on this was the homemade bread that was really fresh. Use to love going here for special occasions. Always looked forward to a great meal. Sorry to say the last 2 times I was there the meal was disappointing. Last night had the shrimp with noodles and Cajan sauce....little to no flavor whatsoever. The time prior was seared scallops...no longer on the menu. I used to live near this restaurant but had moved to the Lehigh valley. I could have picked a number of restaurants down there that would have blown macaluso's away. The food is delicious! Friday was my first time here but it certainly won't be my last. I heard about Macaluso's from a friend who lives in Nesquehoning. It was a 35 minute drive for us but totally worth it. I really enjoyed the chicken saltimbocca. I had my heart set on it before we walked in but I could have easily been swayed to switch to one of the evenings specials after the detailed explanation of each was delivered by our server, Fernando. We went here for our 25th wedding anniversary.. WHAT A MISTAKE!!! We got in there at 405 and looked at the menu waiting for server that sat at the bar when she finally did come at 415 she said the chef came in and was putting specials together... After 40 minutes she finally came back with specials and rattled them off my son and I got the bone in rib eye and my wife got the rack of lamb and we also got the stuffed Portobello as an app.. well after half hour the apps came out was ice cold... Then another half hour the salads came out the size of a coffee cup plate then another 35 minutes the steaks and lamb came out .... Well the steaks were paper thin and pan fried, server said they did not have the equipment to Pittsburgh them like we asked.. shouldn't she have said this when ordering? not to mention the little pile of cold mashed potatoes.. my wife's small rack of lamb came ice cold. Told the server she took it back 5 minutes later comes back with it and was still cold and she only cut into one little piece and said take it back and take it off the bill. Another server came out and said because my wife ate half they were charging us for it.... I said let me talk to the manager well the cook came out and said she ate half I said bring it back I will show you a d she said it is meat and did not want to kill it??? What does that mean? I said I cook all the time it was cold and she took one little piece take it off the bill so the did.. and the check came thru charged 12 for an ice cold spinach stuffed portobello and$42 for each thin undercooked Ribeyes unreal!!! Now I know why the place is empty!!! Was there 2 1/2 hours to waste $122...... McDonald's would have been better!!! My husband and I were visiting Jim Thorpe for the weekend and this restaurant was recommended. On our way out of town we stopped in but didn't realize they only opened at 4pm for supper. Normally I don't write negative reviews because I recognize the harmful effect it can have on a business. Especially today with restaurants struggling just to stay open. So right up front this review is meant to make the owners realize that the waitstaff are working their butts off, and your killing business with stupid details that are easily remedied. The food was great and prices competitive under normal circumstances. But the following things would be enough to ruin a meal and cause patrons not to return: 1. How do you serve bread with no butter or oil? Patrons should not have to ask for it. 2. The dishes used are unbalanced cheap plastic. So much so that if gentle pressure against the wrong edge eating your salad, the plate will tip or worse yet a bowl filled with hot soup will flip burning you with the soup. Which is what happened to someone in our party. 3. How do you not offer decaf coffee at dinner time? 4. How do you not have half and half or cream for coffee? Milk does not cut it. And the waitstaff can only say, "Sorry we don't have it." 5. How is the coffee served taste like it was left over from lunch? These are all easy fixes that could redeem a restaurant and be worthy of the hard work your front of house staff is giving you. read more

Went to a funeral dinner here and as soon as we were seated we were told that the food was not ready for another 25 minutes which turned into 45 minutes . The restaurant set a table up with pitchers of different types of drinks which became empty quickly. family of the deceased had to bring refills from the bar. Upon the food being ready it was ok at best. The chocolate cake for dessert was terrible. This was a planned event for several days so management was well aware of it. read more

Well, a couple of things disappointed me. 1. Checked their menu online before going there and decided what I was going to get, when I got there the menu was completely different then the online menu my item was not on the menu. 2. Linen table clothe covered with paper did not like that a little bit. 3. Eight people in our party one asked for chicken parmesan with vodka sauce instead of red sauce the poor waiter had to come back to our table and tell him the chef would not do that, he had to order it as written. This is for the loading portion of the venue. I would give the Lantern no stars, if it was an option. One star is highly over rated. I called the day of our reservations, at 2pm, regarding pick up of the room key later that evening. I received a voice mail message at 9:30 that evening, very elusive, to please call the motor lodge and ask to speak with Rita. I called and Rita told me they they overbooked and I no longer have a room. Sorry. Good-bye. At 2pm I had a room, and now 7.5 hours later, I don't? It sounds extremely fishy to me. I had a party of four, and we were out of town guests for a wedding. Horrible customer service. No one figures out they overbooked an hour before the guests show up. read more

My first experience here!! heard good reviews !! So we made reservations !! Now for the dinning experience !! Bread basket consisted of 5 small slices of Italian bread . don't mean a loaf! looked recycled . Salad was small, only mixed greens with grated carrots !! Chicken marsala was very Bland and watery sauce, would not stick to the chicken I think it was boiled, the prosciutto was rubbery, the red mashed potato where very good. The second entrée was the pan seared halibut (tasteless) no seasoning at all, served with sweet pea risotto it did help the dish. Coffee and crème brulee where OK !! Not good value for the dollar. We try to come to Jim Thorpe at least once a year and Macalusos is on our short list of places we have to eat. Sitting by itself on the outer edges of the small town of Nesquehoning, known for its roots to the coal industry and building fire trucks, Macaluso's is the epitome of the "hidden gem". You could easily drive past Macaluso's, mistaking it for an out of the way motel. The restaurant just doesn't jump out at you. The building is actually quite nice and you should not judge this book by it's cover. The parking lot is filled on a Friday or Saturday evening leaving one to quickly realize two things: it's a local favorite, and you'll probably need a reservation. My first visit here was for a private party and having sampled their food, service and atmosphere, I new I had to return so I brought my wife here for our anniversary dinner. The staff is small town friendly and prompt with service. The food is served hot, plated to give the appearance you're in one of those elegant restaurants in the middle of a big city, and very flavorful. I had the stuffed haddock special, my wife the stuffed shrimp. The portions appear deceivingly small, but quite filling. Some may feel it's a bit pricey for the portion, but I thought it was reasonable. We didn't leave hungry. Macaluso's offers a nice variety of domestic, imported and craft beers, bottle or draft along with a nice wine selection and I hear the martinis are the best anywhere. The bar and restaurant are clean all around with a very nice decor that hints toward the same elegance of their plate offerings. I'm told an expansion of an outside deck is planned for the future and so is my return. read more

Completely disappointed at their service ! Placed a phone order for pickup was told will be ready in a hour, got there...waited another hour (total of 2 hours) ! During the hour waiting there staff completely ignored us didn't even keep us posted and when we asked for status, we could tell they answered with an annoying tone. Once we got back to our air B&B (which is 20' away) then realized 1 of the dish came w/o chicken, only spaghetti was in the take out box (dish was Angel Hair with grilled chicken, $13). Now comes the best part...I called to question and they offered me a refund of $4 !! Telling me that's how much the chicken cost, which means their spaghetti (with buttter) alone cost $9, more than the chicken !! I expressed my 1000% unsatisfied with this solution as it absolutely ruined my mini getaway. I asked them to delivery the missing chicken to me, or refund me the whole $13 ! They wouldn't ! And told me if I go back to dine with them next day they will offer a complimentary dessert to me. I questioned them this "free dessert" is ONLY offered if I go back to dine in there (which obviously I will never eat there again) ??! Then they said "you can pickup the dessert no need to dine in". Well, that should be the first option to customer, so it wouldn't sound like you're forcing the customer to come eat again in order to get the free dessert ! Of course I didn't return to get to free dessert, not worth my drive there and back. But as a big restaurant like that, the most appropriate way is to refund the whole amount to the customer. You already ruined my experience there no way I will drive there again to pick up the chicken, and by refunding me $4... that was a complete joke !! read more

My boyfriend and his family are from the surrounding areas (Tamaqua, Summit Hill, etc). I brought my mom up to visit Jim Thorpe, meet his parents and celebrate Mother's Day. I was given positive reviews at this lodge from family members and locals. Stayed here for one night over Mother's Day weekend. Very basic but that's all we required. Not updated. Decor is right out of the 80's. Generally quiet and very clean. Check-in was at 3:30 pm. We arrived at 3:25 and could not find a "office" to check in. We went through the restaurant and waited as the bartender and two employees ignored us. I finally spoke up, "Excuse me but can you ladies direct us to the check-in area for the lodge?" The bartender, Rita told us to wait by the desk at the end of the hallway. We did as we were told and waited. My mom was thirsty so she went back to the bar to buy a diet coke. At this point, Rita appeared at the desk and asked me, "is SHE checking in with you, too?" I responded, "yes, that's my mom. She just went to the bar for a drink." Rita, "well, we're closed.".... what? seriously? At this point I was beyond disappointed. We were ignored at the door. Rita spoke to us with such disdain in her voice, which was frustrating. She assigned us a room and I asked if we could be placed on the second floor because as two women in an unfamiliar town, we feel safer. Rita's response, "You're fine here. They patrol. I have to start on the bottom floor". My mom returned at this point (She later told me she stood at the bar for a couple minutes as the same two girls ignored her completely and sipped on their drinks). We were assigned our room and given a key. We were not told which room we were in or when check out was at in the morning. Rita then lightened up for a second and told my mom she would pour her diet coke. We walked back to the bar and my mom paid. I asked Rita which room we were in because the back of the key was so scratched up and she replied, "15, it's on the key" in a snotty tone. I was done at this point. We went to our room and minded our own business. We were the only customer's that night, so it was quiet but not until after 11:30 pm when all the employees of the restaurant left. They were so loud getting into their cars and talking outside the lodge that we could not sleep until after everyone was gone. During dinner I heard other customers who knew Rita complimenting her and saying how they needed to say "hi" before they left, which was surprising. I guess being from out of town worked against us. We were polite and courteous but weren't returned with the same favorable qualities. When we checked out in the morning, the woman who collected our key was extremely personable and nice. It was a redeeming experience but we still won't return to the lodge after being treated with such disrespect and disregard. Rita needs to take a class on speaking to customers and proper social cues. We were new paying customers and we won't be back to the lodge because of her demeanor. read more

Stayed with a friend of mine at the Lantern Lodge when we took an impromptu trip to Jim Thorpe. The place looked deserted although it was down the street from downtown Jim Thorpe. It backed up to a cemetery and we were told that the following day we had to check out a little earlier because they were hosting a funeral there. The room was VERY basic but one of the double beds had a huge sag in the center so my friend and I just shared the good bed. It was tiny and right out of the 80's decor. It had a physical key to the door with no extra security deadbolt or anything on the back which made me a little nervous considering your window is the parking lot right outside. But there is mountains and nature, so it didn't feel like a seedy town which made me feel a little safer. The staff may have heard a friend and I teasing that we felt like it was the Bates Motel or a scene from the Shining because we had to search to find someone working there...but the staff was friendly enough. I probably would spend the extra few bucks and stay in town next time. It seemed clean but still divey. There was a bucket but no ice machine or vending machine. I didn't bother to eat at the restaurant. Their menu and pricing does not match the quality of their lodging. It looked like you would spend at least $60 for a meal for two which was almost the cost of a room there...classy restaurant with a divey lodge... Just a note, but there is no wifi and my cell phone did not work there at all. Apparently the restaurant is very well known to locals as being fantastic but I did not eat there... read more

I use to love this place for my "Special Occasion" get away. My 10th Wedding Anniversary on the 22nd, my wife deserves a special place after putting up with me for more than 10 years. Although the food was fine it was not anything special. The restaurant was only about half full and had 3 waitresses and a cocktail helper on duty. I swear I could've serviced all the tables myself. After waiting too long for any waitress, our waitress was so boisterous she bout shook me out of our booth when she yelled the specials at us.. I got the steak special with mashed potatoes($$40) way too much money and it was anything but special. Drinks and food prices were just ridiculously high and the service was poor. In fact our waitress was too busy with whatever else she wasn't doing to even bring our tab, she had the drink assistant do it. I never heard of that before. read more

The absolute worst - every aspect of the restaurant. The food was overpriced and mediocre at best (some dishes cold, others tasteless). The service was absolutely horrible - from the hostess having no idea what she was doing, to the manager coming out an berating guests. As soon as we sat, they brought us water .. with no glasses. Ten minutes later finally brought our glasses and asked to take our order .. however they never gave us menus. After taking our order, no one came to our table ONCE to check in on drinks etc - just to deliver our food. And when we asked for bread (that came with our meals) it took another ten minutes and we were nearly done with our meal. The management is horrible - I've never felt more ostracized at a restaurant and dine out often. I highly encourage you to try ANY place but this restaurant. read more

Our second time having dinner here. Our server, Fernando was great. Gave us very detailed descriptions of all the specials (which were num). He never rushed us and we were able to enjoy a very leisurely dinner. My husband & I shared the delicious stuffed pepper and beet salad with goat cheese, oranges and sunflower seeds. I had Veal Saltimbocca & my husband had the New Zealand Lamb Chops which were outstanding. My Pear Martini was wonderful & my husband said his Perfect Manhattan was perfect. This is our second time eating here and it won't be our last. Joanne was super friendly as well. Was not even allowed to sit at table to wait. Waited over an hour while other tables were seated. Spoke to owner/ manager who said what do want me to do about it! Waited for an hour and fifteen minutes for food while there were only three tables waiting to be served and the inside ding room was empty. DO NOT GO HERE. Unfortunately, you cannot give zero stars. On Saturday we made a reservation for 7:30 for a party of 8 where we were not seated til almost 8:30. We were having drinks at the bar so we didn't really make a big deal about it. Someone had come up to us and said she was pushing the other party out that they were annoying her since they had their check. When we were finally being seated they told me I could leave my card up with the bartender and they would bring to the table for that tab. (I had to ask 2 times and took 30 mins before it was actually given back to me). Our waitress, Marylee, was a complete space cadet. She kept walking away in the middle of speaking to us saying she forgot things. When going over the specials they were either out of it or only 1 or 2 left so they couldn't accomodate us. If we had been seated at the approriate time this probably wouldn't have been a problem. The food was AWFUL. It was burnt and bland. After nearly being there for 3 hours at this point we received our check and nothing had been comped for the inconvenience. We asked to speak to the manager who turned out to be the owner, Toni. Well she refused to come out and speak to us...HOW MUCH MORE UNPROFESSIONAL CAN YOU BE? She told Marylee take a round of drinks off. Why own a restaurant if you clearly CANNOT cook and don't care what your patrons think of your restaurant??? I urge everyone not to go here.
