We purchased an 100 year old house 22 years ago. The boiler was already estimated to be 20-30 years old. We went through several oil companies before landing on McFarlane. I have been using their service for perhaps 15 years now. I bought their Tank Guard Plan and the No Surprises Plan. They service our unit every year and end up replacing parts throughout the year - for no charge. Whenever there is a problem, they come out same day/night - whenever. Several years ago they gave me a white tarp to cover my very light carpeting, I roll it out whenever they come over. They are nice, professional, and even kind. The detected a leak in my oil tank and worked with me to get the "right" new tank in. They have replaced our water heater. Today, they are once again coming to the rescue, our boiler may be on it's last leg, we'll find out. read more

There was a puddle of water on the floor near the indoor part of my central A/C unit. The leak might just have started not too long before I noticed it, and the A/C was still cooling the house. I called MacFarlane Energy, Inc., which I had used before and was able to solve the problems in the recent past. Mike in Service was giving me an appointment on the very same day I called, but I asked for service for a couple of days later. MacFarlane Energy had always been quick to respond to my service calls, which is very much appreciated. The Service Techs they'd sent me before were always kind and able to solve the problem. The very patient Mr. Harry Greenlaw is one of them. Today, Mr. Trevor King and a friend came by and solved the problem in a very short period of time. I was fearing the worst really and was relieved that it wasn't. There was a leak in the system, which Mr. King found and fixed. Excellent for oil delivery, but I'm not confident about recommending them for repairs and maintenance. For oil delivery, they're easy to work with and I have never had to worry about running out of oil. Billing and payment is simple, and it's fantastic that they offer online bill payment. As for repairs, we had an experience that left us with a feeling of broken trust. So going back about a year from now, we had started to notice water stains under our water tank. We had moved into our house about two years prior, and we weren't quite sure if our tank was old, so we asked the MacFarlane technicians about it during our annual tune-up visits. But when we asked, the technicians did not think was an issue, so we didn't worry too much about it moving forward. Maybe the water stains were old too, right? A few months after one of the tune-ups, we had an unrelated contractor doing some work in the basement when he asked us to come downstairs. This was odd. So we head downstairs, and he points to an area where he noticed a fresh water puddle... under the tank... in the same pattern as the previous stains. So after we heard this concern from another person, we promptly scheduled an appointment with MacFarlane Energy to have them take a closer look. They sent a technician over that same week, which was great because we were pretty nervous by now. We weren't sure if the tank was about to rupture and spill all its water out. The technician checked it out and concluded that while he did notice the water stains, that he "didn't see any issues". Phew! We're no experts on heating equipment, so it was a relief to hear a professional assure it that things were fine. Then a few weeks later, my partner goes downstairs to start a load of laundry... and he notices a puddle spreading across the basement. Uh oh. We peek into the room where our heating equipment is, and find even more water there. And then, when we looked under the tank, sure enough there's a steady drip coming from it. Our tank was done. We called MacFarlane immediately, and they were able to send over a technician that same day. The team was great with helping prevent more water damage in our basement, and got the faulty tank replaced quickly. But overall, we were left feeling pretty bummed because it felt like we did the right thing a few months back -- when we initially suspected a problem and called it in. Now we had an emergency repair on our hands and a sudden large bill. We expressed our disappointment over a phone call afterwards, and though they didn't offer an apology, they were polite and listened. They also offered to throw in a maintenance plan free of charge, which was kind, but we couldn't help feeling like the offer was hard to accept following our experience. It's like having the brakes in your car fail, and then being offered free repair in the future from the dealer. (Expect that you had asked about those noisy brakes before they failed, and was told there wasn't a problem.) So overall, no issues with oil delivery. But with repairs? Not so sure after our experience. read more

Our mini-split wasn't working and I called MacFarlane Energy to set up a service appointment and they were able to have someone come out for same day service. Trevor was courteous, patient and knowledgeable. Even though it ended up to be something that he couldn't help us with (electrical problem probably), he was able to troubleshoot and give us direction on what we needed to do. He was friendly, polite and very helpful. I will call MacFarlane next time I run into a similar issue. COD, which made sense since we were new customers. read more

Wish I could have given 0 star! MacFarlane does not do anything to keep their forced customers happy. Especailly the tenants who are forced to use MacFarlane services because of their landlords' annual contracts. Although I have cancelled my enrollment on the automatic delivery through their website, they tell me that they never received that and filled my tank without my permission. Although they told me that they were going to pull out the oil they never did and told me that they tried to reach out to me but couldn't which is not the fact! These things are not major and could have easily been resolved with a customer focused approach or a better online system which MacFarlane is clearly lacking. What is the point of having an online system if they are not capable to handle!!! By the way this was not the first time they messed up with online deliveries. The thing that really frustrates me was the behavior of the rudeness of the staff. Mr. PAUL did not hesitate to threaten me over the phone to put this into the court and accused me being . This is completely UNACCEPTABLE. I am so happy that I moved out and don't have to deal with this company anymore. STAY AWAY! read more

They are way overcharged you on oil delivery price by telling you they are the only one post daily price on their websites. They charged about 50 cents higher than my local oil supplier. They replaced my boiler for $12k but did not heat my house at all and neglect to fix the problem. Should have take these crooks to court. read more

Scheduled them through Yelp. They called back and said it would take up to two weeks to schedule a proposal. Although I would've liked them to come sooner I scheduled it anyway. I used a vacation day to meet with the gentleman who does the proposal. On the day of, they called as I patiently waited for their arrival and informed me that they couldn't make it because he was stuck in meetings all day. Not only could I have salvaged a vacation day had I known sooner, I would now have to use another one to meet with them on their next available appointment. Unacceptable! I'm sure there's no accountability either. My suggestion is that you avoid them if you are someone who has a full time job. Any company who cannot keep a commitment to their schedule probably will carry over to their work performed as well. read more

Wow, just, wow. Scott MacFarlane called me 3 times today while I was at work. The last time I finally answered, which was a regretful decision. Let me just say, if you own a business, read my negative Yelp review, and then reach out to me SOLELY to justify your actions and not apologize - don't bother calling. I had a bad experience, OWN IT and do better next time. Don't call me at work 3 times to explain to me how I'm wrong and you're right. If I was ever going to feel better about this situation, you calling and harassing me isn't going to help. You stated multiple times that you appreciate my husband's service to this country, but it is hard to take that appreciation seriously when all you did was tell me (the wife of a deployed solider) that I'm wrong and being unfair to you! Technicalities aside, communication has been lacking from day 1 and you cannot change my feelings about that. Whether you "followed the rules" with the permits or the electrician worked for you or not - none of that matters. Maybe if you had communicated what was happening at the time we wouldn't be in this situation. What matters is that you called me with the sole purpose of defending yourself - not once did you apologize, not once did you ask how you could make this better. We've paid for your services and we hope we never have to deal with you or your company again. I've only recently started using MacFarlane for my boiler maintenance, but today is the second (of two) times they've been late for their appointment. This time they're an hour outside of the two hour appointment we booked. Last time they were 30 minutes. I work and schedule my work around these appointments and so far I'm really disappointed. Work is fine (just maintenance and replacing one relief valve) though expensive compared to competitors. read more

I'm only giving 1 star because I can't give 0. We called to have a technician come to our home on 7/3 because the fan on our a/c unit wasn't coming on. Phil came to our home was here for a little over an hour and seemed completely confused. He gave us 4 or 5 different reasons that the system wasn't working. 1 of the reasons he provided us was that our system needed 6lbs of refrigerant (our house is new construction and was built in 2018 so this seemed odd to us). He didn't fix anything and told us that we need to have someone else from his company come out at a different time to check the system to see where our leak was. He tried to charge us for the hour but my husband called to speak with a manager. The manager told us not to pay and apologized for the confusion. When my husband and I were on the phone with the manager, we left the tech unattended in our living room. My laptop was hooked up to the charger as I was using it before the tech came. When he left our home, I noticed that the block to my apple charger was missing. I wasn't going to say anything to the company but my husband said that I should because this person is going into other homes and could do something similar. I sent a Yelp message to the company and called and spoke with a manager. I explained the entire situation to the manager. I told her that we aren't looking for compensation but just wanted them to be aware. We had a different company come out to look at the system. They tested the refrigerant levels and the system was full so Phil either didn't know what he was doing or was simply not telling the truth. I explained this to the manager as well. Her explanation to me was that the tech doesn't even swear. So is she implying that I'm lying? I had no intention of adding a review but after talking with her I chose to. I didn't ask the company to pay for my charger but just thought they should know who they have working for them. The kid that came to our house seemed really nice. I felt that when we were asking Phil to explain his findings he got annoyed because he didn't have any answers. When my husband said he wasn't paying if he can't explain what he did or what the issue is and wanted to talk to the manager, he obviously wasn't happy. I would NEVER hire this company to do work at either of my homes. Not only do they have a tech that isn't skilled working with them but he also is not trust worthy. Also, as a manager if a customer calls to share their issue, it probably isn't a good idea to tell me that Phil doesn't even swear. That doesn't have a thing to do with his skills or him being trust worthy! read more

I have been a customer with them for over 7 years, and today I received a bill charging me $2.9990 per gallon, when on average the market price today is approximately $2.15 per gallon. So then I called Orland Oil which is based off of Framingham and they told me that they're only charging $1.89 per gallon. I called MacFarlane to tell him that I felt as if I was being ripped off as a loyal customer, and he proceeded to yell at me and completely disregard my frustration and took advantage. They've been ok for oil delivery. However, made an appointment 3 weeks ago for heat pump service and described exactly what I needed done. Received a call the day of the appointment and had to explain the problems again and was told that they may have to reschedule since there may not be a someone in the area with the right equipment. What's the point of making an appointment then? I took a day off from work so it's a bit inconvenient. That's all fine I suppose, but the customer service rep was less than friendly about it. Got a "hello" when I called the number back and felt like I doing something wrong when I showed the slightest bit of frustration that my appointment may have to be rescheduled. read more

I made an appointment 2 weeks ago to get my rooftop HVAC unit serviced. I told them specifically that I had a roof top unit and that they need a latter to get to the roof. Called this morning to confirm they were coming and was told that they did not have a latter and all's I got was "sorry" that they did not have anyone with a later, I burned a vacation day today so needles to say I was not happy. Called back to advise I was taking to social media and not happy. I was transferred to Boomer who, I must say, was much better that the first guy (and the girl who answered the phone seemed to care as well) and asked to give him some time. he called me about 30 minutes later and located a latter (I understand that not every truck has a tall latter) and was sending 2 techs within few hours. I am a big customer service person and the first call this AM I was very down on them (this is a rewrite from earlier) I think Boomer went a long way to build back my customer service trust. I hope he understands that I am looking for a long term company that I can count on. 3 stars on the fixing the earlier mess up. (I wish I spoke with him first so my BP would be steady) hope to bump up the review after the techs come out. read more

Excellent service - extremely professional and courteous! They had to go back to the company to get a wet-vac to remove the pooled water under the handler. Hopefully, driving time for the quick errand back won't be on the bill. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. read more

We use them for both AC and Heat and they are always here when we are in a jam. Our problems haven't always been easy to figure out but they solve it each and every time. WORST COMPANY EVER I got them out the Angie's List Magazine to do a quote for a large job. Whole new system including a new AC compressor, converting from oil to gas and wrapping/insulating my duct work in the basement. They came to my house on June 15th.... That is it.... No phone call, no price, nothing. Wasted WEEKS waiting for a price, contacted them twice to see where the price was and was promised it was coming.... NOTHING. This type of service lacks professionalism. If they weren't interested in the job, they should have said so instead of wasting my time. You couldn't pay me to use this company in the future. I found someone else and they were awesome!! Gave me the quote before even walking out the door, price was good and the job was done in 4 days. They addressed EVERY problem I had and really listened.
