I found it on Yelp and we had been wanting to try a "pollo asado" restaurant, Don Jose's is a very vibrant restaurant with papel picado that instantly gives it a feel good ambiance! My order wasn't ready because they had a large catering order to fulfill. It was still a reasonable wait time. I was surprised at how reasonably priced it is. They have so much more than just the chicken. They have other protein options, plates, and burgers. They also have Aguas frescas (horchata and Jamaica) I got a Jamaica (hibiscus). Tried this restaurant a couple weeks ago not expecting too much and the flavor floored me. Outstanding is all I can say, it truly is. It's over by the North Star mall and has plenty of parking. I was out for a full day being pampered by my bestie... we ended up at the Cuban bakery in the same shopping center and saw the smoke and both despite being full we decided to have another meal at this place. This place is pretty consistent when it comes to flavor, the chicken is always ready fast and well seasoned. Although, the last time we visited we got cold tortillas and asked our server if they could be heated, even if it's the microwave. It took about 20 minutes before we got the tortillas. read more

While taking in the scenery I spied a peculiar arch in the middle of a shopping center and it said "Pollos Asados Don Jose" on it, but I couldn't see a restaurant from where I was stopped. So yeah, of course I pulled into the parking lot to investigate. I wasn't prepared for what I was going to find. This chargrilled chicken haven has become a mainstay for my family and me. I've gotten to the point where I'll just demolish a whole chicken on my own; I don't need tortillas. Just give me a small jug of that green salsa and a bird expertly marinated and flame-grilled and leave me to my own devices. The sides here are authentic: the charro beans are extra and they're worth a taste. But have I mentioned the chicken and the green salsa? The food here will take you back to simpler times of summers highlighted by backyard barbecues, charcoal grills, and chicken with a crispy flame-kissed skin. Everything was flavorful, cooked to the right temperature, and without attached chunks of fat! The sides were fabulous as well. Rice had a nice texture with a slight kick of heat, beans were yummy-accompanied by small pieces of tomato and bacon, and my fave- guacamole with lettuce and chips. We really enjoy going to this place. It's very much out of the way, towards the back corner of a mature Blanco Road shopping center. It's location provides customers ample parking. Let's talk about the food... no tacos, no enchiladas here - it says so on the door. However, what we do come for is the parillada (grilled meats), and we've gone with the Parillada Don Jose (small, and then went for the big most recently when we brought my mom). it's very good. Grilled chicken, grilled skirt steak, sausage, grilled jalapeno and onion, and a grilled serrano with cheese. It comes with 2-4 servings of charro beans and rice, a pint of guacamole salad, and tortillas. You won't need more. They have various aguas frescas. I tried the horchata one time and limonada another time. Both come in a huge cup - sorry, no refills, but with the food and the drinks, you won't leave with an empty stomach. This place is just okay as far as there chicken is concerned. It's juicy and tasty like many other places in town, but their green salsa was not spicy at all or nor had much flavor. I don't understand why these places don't just include the beans in there while chicken meal. At this particular one it's an additional $4 ,,just for the beans in addition to the $19 price. We aldo got a half pound of discada and that was just oaky on flavor. We ate there, asked for chips and salsa which was a charge as well for $2.99. Not so expensive, but the fact ghat they charge at a Mexican restaurant when most of restaurants do not. And then they only provide 1 little maybe 2 ounce salsa with it. When I asked for another, the waitress said it would be an additional. 99 cents. I asked for the manager but got afree salsa instead. She said the manager was to busy at the time and rather than come discuss it with me, I guess they figured it would be easier just to give me one for the chips and salsa we already paid for. And then to top ot off, we had leftovers and guess what. There was a charge for the to-go containers as well. .50 and .75 for 2 styro foam med size containers. Having grown up in the valley, there are Pollos Asados places on every corner! Naturally, here in San Antonio, a couple of them have popped up! I can honestly say I've tried them all and none for them come close to the flavor and taste like Don Jose's. Conveniently located on the Northside right off Blanco Rd. I'n what used to be Blanco Cafe, the location is huge! Great for a quick lunch for employees, big families, etc. The place is clean and sleek and the beef fajita & whole grilled chickens are excellent! They have an original location on the southside and I'm glad they brought that deliciousness to the north! Best Mexican food in San Antonio. We saw this restaurant on instagram and thought it looked good. We had no idea what what a treat we were going to have. The food was absolutely to die for and very fairly priced as well. We were going to have separate entrées but our waitress recommended the platter to share because we would be able to get more food for about the same price which, for us, ended up giving us leftovers for the next day. It was definitely enough food for 2 people and would have easily fed 3-4 people. The service was excellent and the restaurant was colorful and inviting. We will definitely be back.
