    a bag of corn

While staying in St. Ignace to visit Mackinac Island we decided to go check out the little small businesses in town. Were big on supporting local when offered. As we were driving past this little gem, immediately I noticed rhe big bags of cheese corn and caramel corn! Did a quick you turn and stopped in. Unfortunately the corn was packing peanuts but none the less it got our attention! As soon as we walked in we felt welcome and knew we found a gem. The owner was placing candy in the showcase and we got to try free samples. They were soooo yummy. All the candies were made by hand with love and care. We talked and talked about candy making and as we browsed thru the items in the store like local made jams and other trinkets they all had a story. They had something for everyone on your souvenir list, candies, fudge, wind chimes and taffy and mugs and other gifts! We bought different types of candies and puzzles and of course taffy. Everything was wonderful. If your ever visiting St. Ignace be sure to add this to your stop you wont be disappointed!

My experience with Mackinac Fudge Shop was probably a bit different than most reviews, but nevertheless I shall proceed. I wanted to have Mackinac fudge as the favor for my wedding. We had lots of people coming in from outside Michigan and wanted to show off one of the state's most well known confections. And it was a TREMENDOUS hit. We had three flavors (chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, and maple) and I still have guests telling me how they are appalled that they ate the entire 1/4 lb of luscious fudge in one sitting because it was too good. Any child at the reception was out of its mind with sugar madness because parents were too distracted with their own fudge to notice their kids surreptitiously eating all the fudge they could reach. Now that was just a review of the fudge. The customer service deserves its own 12/10 review because as a stressed out bride, I LOVED getting calls or emails from them because they always contained a "yes we can do that, and also we can do this!" Each piece of fudge was well wrapped in wax paper so it would stay fresh for a long time, and boxed in a small white box (perfect for putting a personalized sticker on, as we did). The different flavors had different ribbon colors that matched our wedding, and looked incredibly cute! When the fudge shipped, I got a tracking number and it arrived in an insulated foam box so it would survive the August heat. Literally any concerns I could have had about favors were addressed and put to ease like hot fudge on a marble slab (smoothly and deliciously). Engaged couples: Fudge is a great favor for your guests and you should definitely consider using Mackinac Fudge Shop as your vendor!

I ordered some of their fudge online and it's tasty, but grainy. I don't think fudge is supposed to be grainy.

It tastes almost exactly like the filling in a pumpkin pie! It's kind of crazy. In case you didn't know: Fudge freezes beautifully. The person behind the counter offered that bit of information when I was debating whether or not to buy a couple of boxes of fudge to take home. When I got home, I put the boxes of fudge into a freezer bag and left them in the freezer for two months. After defrosting for a day, they sliced up just as fresh as if I had bought them that day. Also kind of crazy. If you're lucky, you'll get to see the workers make fudge on the marble slabs. They do it so proficiently that it's mesmerizing to watch them work. It's cool to see a puddle of sugar and flavoring turn into a solid mass of candy. Crazy! Along with many different flavors of fudge, you'll find other candies and sweet treats like truffles, taffy, toffee, peanut butter cups, and many others. The people who work here are also super friendly! You can tell they love their product and are proud of what they create. That's so nice to see.

This is the only shop that offers an all caramel fudge block. They don't offer an extensive amount of fudge, but they have a ton of popcorn and taffies. An entire wall of different flavored taffies. The caramel fudge is unique and only available here. I do enjoy caramel flavored candies. Caramels make everything a lot yummier. Their caramel and cheese popcorn kernels are quite sizable and very tasty. Their caramel fudge is different, let it melt in your mouth some. The taffies are quite a variety of flavors. Some are really good, the caramel apple is right on the money. Some have hints of flavors, but aren't as distinguishable. This is the same taffy sold at Joann's, since the packaging is exactly the same. The assortment of dark chocolates are decent. Their cheese and caramel popcorn are both good.

Well, you're S.O.L., my friend. Luckily, my kids like ice cream, so we headed to Sanders because it was basically across the street from our hotel. They got a milkshake and a scoop of chocolate ice cream in a cup (their standard orders), and they were happy with their treats. But if you're looking for some other kinds of ice cream treats, they also have sundaes and things of that nature. Sanders also has a whole case of chocolate goodies, like peanut clusters, coconut clusters and pecan clusters (they seem to like their clusters here); chocolate-covered Rice Krispie Treats; truffles and peanut butter cups and toffee; caramel apples; and lots more. Oh, and fudge. But honestly, I would get fudge somewhere else that isn't a chain. There are lots of fudge places on the island. That's the thing: Sanders is a chain. But it's a Michigan chain, and originated in Detroit, so it's kinda local. Nevertheless, it's a good place to pop into to find something sweet to eat.
