Not my favorite fudge or peanut brittle on Mackinac Island, but you GOTTA get the Peco Flakes here! Peco Flakes is a bit like coconut brittle to me as it has coconut flakes (as well as peanuts). The texture was still cronchy like brittle but there was something about the coconut that kept me coming back for more. May's is one of several fudge shops in town. The woman working here was friendly and provided us with fudge samples. I'm not a fudge connoisseur by any means, but they all tasted good to me. This one was a little cheaper and there was no line. I liked the cherry flavor but i ended up buying the Rum Chocolate one instead.

A summary for those who do not wish to read the review in its entirety. . . This review will be focusing towards the fudge on Mackinaw island upon which sampling every store I can definitively say that by my own opinion Mays is the best to go to for fudge. The establishment may seem unassuming at first as the interior does not boast the same impressive ambiance as it's competition although the service was incredibly friendly and we were greeted by smiles and an eagerness to help in any way. In contrast when asking for a sample at Murdicks we were told to go see the plate at the other end of the counter and then walked away from. While the selection of fudge may be limited the food has the right combination of every preference. Rybas was indeed the creamiest fudge although the flavor seemed muted and lacking while Murdicks was grainy, overly rich, and had a strange aftertaste. Mays on the other hand is firm but creamy and smooth once it is put on your tongue and the flavor has the right amount of richness to keep you wanting more although knowing overindulging will surely lead to disaster. Half a slice later and I am satisfied but my stomach has begun to hate my lack of self control with this food. Although these are my own preferences I believe it is well worth a visit. read more

They make Peco Flakes, a coconut and peanut brittle that is very addictive. The coconut flakes are large and thick cut. They marry well with the buttery brittle and won't break your teeth! The Amaretto Fudge is rich and creamy. The Rum Walnut was was a dream. The shop could use a spruce up. A bit of cheery paint would work wonders! read more

Absolutely the best fudge on the island, hand's down. Why? Creamy, not grainy. But not so creamy that the texture is lard-like. It's creamy in a milky way. As far as the other candy, the english toffee is supurb, and the peanut brittle is thin, crispy and fresh. It's cool that the store is filled with the May family when you go in, making the candy and waiting on customers and answering questions. The other cool thing is that this is the ONLY fudge that is ONLY available on the island (unless you get it shipped) - all of the other shops have locations in the mainland, some even in other states. May's representative, Veronika (sp?) was very kind, polite and an excellent saleswoman. I bought a pound with a half pound free and gave me a discount card. I was very excited to learn that this shop makes their fudge 100% from scratch (no powder bases, etc) along with the fact that they carry fruit only fudge. This was a wonderful discovery for someone who cannot eat chocolate and nuts, which most fudges contain on the island. This place is the best fudge place on the island. There's no "grit" in the fudge, just smooth luscious rich fudge. This place is family owner and operated. They haven't sold out to "the man." Customer service is warm and friendly. Highly recommend. read more

Yummy!! Try Amaretto Chocolate Chip, it's sooo milky.

WOW! Fabulous prices, great deal of 3 half lb slices for 13.95. We got maple walnut, mint, and blueberry. We never had blueberry before but loved it! Ate it way too quickly:) All of it was excellent, packaged well, and stayed fresh till it was gone... but that was not too long. read more

I purchased yesterday (6-23-14). When I opened it at home it was hard as a rock (all three flavors), even the inside when I sliced it. As if it were days old.I have always purchased from Mays but after this experience..never again. Others in our group purchased from Ryba and Joanne. I contacted May's and they immediately responded and are replacing the fudge. They really do stand behind their product. read more
