Way too expensive for what it is. Paid 18 dollars for a double bacon cheeseburger (which was quite small) and cheese fries (which were underwhelming to put it nicely). It was hard to tell if the burger was good because they but the strongest buffalo sauce of all time on it (I asked for bbq sauce). The fries were lackluster with about an ounce of cheese on top. I come here most Friday's when my grandma comes down from Ticonderoga and they never disappoint. They have a very nice vibe and a welcome environment. The staff are some of the nicest people I have seen and they don't usually have a very long wait. The food is very good and their vanilla ice cream is the best I've tasted. The sign on the side of the building reads "Fresh Home Made Burgers" so I assumed that was what I would be served. I wanted a good burger so I came here with the wife recently and had a terrible meal. We each ordered a burger (mine was a bacon cheese burger) with optional lettuce and tomato and "regular" (not fresh cut) fries (the wife had cheese on her fries). Total with two drinks was $17 and change, which seemed steep but it is a small place. The food came out in about 10 minutes, and upon first glance I was disappointed. The burgers were clearly pre-frozen and had the scalloped edges to prove it. There was no color on them whatsoever except gray. My wife thought that they were steamed, and they might have been. Or microwaved. The bottom bun came out soggy, making picking up the burger harder and harder as the meal went on. It leached water and grease all over the small paper plate it was sitting on. After seeing all that grease, I lost my appetite and didn't eat more than half of the burger. The lettuce and tomato were nice, but I didn't taste the cheese or bacon (perhaps because all the grease masked any other flavor). Yuck. The fries were decent frozen fries, which I prefer over fresh cut fries that always seem to be soggy and limp. They were unsalted but ketchup saved them. The burger made me thirsty so I asked for a refill on my soda, which was served in what looked to be a 16oz cup. They don't do refills, but sold me another similar size soda for $1.75. That seems steep for a fountain drink. We didn't stay for ice cream, though some of their flavors looked good. Of note: they had soft serve twist raspberry and coffee together. This not only sounds odd, but the Snoman in Troy has the same combo (I saw it there the day before). I suspect they have the same supplier. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was cute inside, which were the only positives of the night. But I see no reason to come here for food. read more

No fun or excitement, looked more like closing day, but without the happy feel that Mac's always provided. The service (with the exception of Steve & Nathalie) has gone down the drain... Opening day there was a child scooping ice cream, 5/2 the woman working the counter obviously had no idea what she was doing... I witnessed her LICK cherry dip from her fingers, and not wash her hands, then she used her fingers to take hard ice cream off the scoop and left a tub of ice cream out of the freezer. When my sundae was made it was small and the sauce was on top of the whipped cream & cherry!!! I was inside on a beautiful day (outside windows were closed) for 10 mins with one ice cream customer before me. My husband brought me here one night when we were tired and neither of use wanted to cook. We both ordered hamburgers and fries. I ordered a regular hamburger with cheese fries. The fries were limp and the cheese tasted more processed than usual. The hamburgers were fried greasy and tasted like they had been steamed. The buns were probably previously frozen because the top was disintegrating and crumbling while I held it. Also, no free refills on drinks...soda is cheap. Love this place for the down home cheeseburgers and fries. The patties are thick, juicy and good chargrilled flavor. Based on the shape of the patty I'd guess it's hand formed. None of those frozen pre-made junks. There's ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, malt vinegar and other condiments you can self apply. This isn't a fancy burger but it's a great price and you can easily forgo McDonalds for this. Also got to love the ices. I get mine lemon flavored with soft serve and it's the best. I'll say it up here and at the end - CASH ONLY! When you set your expectations right, this place is amazing. What you should expect is quintessential, quick, short-order type food if you're eating more than dessert. We've had hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, etc. here and while greasier than I'd normally eat, the food is delicious. And one of the best parts is the price of the food - it's so reasonable. When you're looking for a quick dinner with dessert, this is a great option. There is some limited indoor seating, but also plenty of picnic tables outside. They also have some rides for the kiddos (think what you see in the mall), but no change machine so make sure to bring your own quarters! The ice creams we've tried here (also reasonably priced) have all been delicious. I appreciate some of the creativity in flavors and I find somewhat unique to the Capital Region. Be warned though, the cookie monster will die your mouth blue! If you're planning on heading down here, you can find parking on the street and there are some spots in a lot behind the building. Mac's is a gem in the rough and probably has the best homemade hard ice cream in the region (in my opinion). Not only is it delicious and cheap, but the flavors are so unique and the people who work there are so nice. The coconut, the garbage pail, and the maple bacon flavors are some of my favorites. Word of caution though... The scoops are huge, so the kids size is more than sufficient. Skip the toppings and let the flavor of the ice cream shine through! Mac's without a doubt earns 5 stars from me! It's a no-frills, friendly place with great ice cream and food located on the corner of 3rd almost across from Schuyler Bakery. You can sit outside at one of their picnic tables or even sit inside for those less than great weather days. The ice cream here is great. All of the hard flavors are homemade and they have a lot of flavors to choose from. My favorite is the coffee crunch which is coffee with oreos in it-yum! They even have maple bacon ice cream that has chunks of bacon in it (apparently a local favorite). They also have soft vanilla, chocolate, twist, coffee and raspberry. If you don't like ice cream they also have homemade frozen ices. Another great part of Mac's is that they serve great food too! They have a lot of different options like hamburgers, hot dogs, homemade french fries, fish fry, chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, breakfast sandwiches etc. All of it is cooked on the spot by Steve who knows what he's doing! During the weekdays there are a lot of great lunch specials like chicken sandwiches, chicken, tuna and egg salad sandwiches, burger specials, meatloaf, etc which are all awesome and come with homemade french fries for around $5 which is honestly the biggest bargain around! All good homemade food. They even have mac and cheese on Fridays which my friend swears by. I'm not sure if it's a secret, but they also have breakfast on Saturday mornings! I inquired and found that now there will only be ONE daily special. I was very disappointed that they have only one daily special. I asked about the hamburgers - which used to be hand formed patties of fresh burger meat. But I decided not to do burgers today (I hope the burgers are still fresh, hand formed) and I bought the hotdog special. Todays special was hotdogs with home made fries. Well, they were just hotdogs, but thankfully the fries were the usual delicious hand made fries. Yesterday I referred a family to Macs and, had I known about the changes, I probably would not have recommended Macs, or at least would have done so with a caveat. Watervliet does not have many places to get a good, cheap lunch and I have referred numerous people to give them a try. Unsalted, but was provided with copious amounts of salt packets. Had to be nearly a pound of fries in the container. Ended up tossing 1/3 of them. Slaw: I want this recipe. Crisp, cold, good bite to it. Creamy, but with that vinegar/acid that so many slaw's lack. Only complaint was that there wasn't enough. Ice Cream: Coconut Supreme - If you like Coconut... Not the same this year (so far) under new owners. Ice cream appears to be the same (tried mint chocolate chip and cookie dough), though some say portions are a bit off (that could be a training thing for some new staff). The food definitely seems to have taken a hit - not Stevie's fault. Prices are about the same, but quality is NOT the same. I think maybe the hot dogs went up in price. Several items weren't available yet - some ice cream flavors, orange cream, slushes (said they were waiting until summer for those). Homemade iced tea is gone - now they have unsweetened tea in the soda machine (did not taste good - obviously no substitute). Burgers are the thin premade kind you get in boxes at the grocery store with the non-round shape. No-name ketchup in bottles that LOOK like Heinz but if you look closely it says "est 1986" (actual Heinz is 1968) and "Worlds Finest" or something like that - same picture, font, bottle shape, etc. Really thin napkins (like facial tissue) - pretty sure they had normal napkins in previous years I can understand the cost cutting on the ketchup and napkins, but you can't change to premade burgers when the sign out front says "homemade burgers". It will be interesting to see if they still do special dinners. They have a steak sandwich now on Thursdays that looks good, so I am anxious to try it. I used to look forward to specials like fish, corned beef, etc. In this visit the handcut fries were smaller portion and really greasy (oil too low temp?), onion rings good but also too greasy (likely same issue). My son got the plain fries and they weren't as good as previous years either (and had freezer burn taste). Wife's burger was overcooked (not hard when it's paper thin) and they gave us our ice-cream for free to apologize for the greasy fries, rings, and overcooked burger. So customer service is still tops but it will be interesting to see if the food will be brought back to the same level it used to be. I wish people who buy an established, successful business would not mess with the food/quality since that is why it is a successful business. The same thing just happened with Schuyler Bakery just down the street. I fear we are going to see both of these institutions losing customers and going out of business due to messing with the formulas that made both of them so successful. They make their own ice cream, they have a variety of interesting, tasty, fun flavors, the staff is super friendly, and the portions are giant. I used to love going to Macs, ice cream was delicious, food was decent. Would bring my granddaughters with a pocket full of quarters and we would eat ice cream and ride the rides, play the games. This year the ice cream was disappointing, waffle cones were commercial made and rides more often than not did not work. When reported they said they would let the machine owner know it was not working properly, they wouldn't give you quarters at the window for the rides. They would give 4 quarters at a time Very disappointed. We stopped going and would drive to snowman or Kurvers who both have much better ice cream but no rides. We gave them a chance in the beginning of the season but feel they ruined a great business with their changes and poor attitude. It's been too long since I got the food, but I'm doing this one straight up on the ice cream. It's amazing. Last couple times I have gone, I got the waffle cone, which is made in house. When you walk in it smells like waffle cones, and if there was a smell that literally made you want to gain weight, this is it. I usually get chocolate peanut butter because it's the greatest. Lots of peanut butter, flavor of the chocolate is rich, the churn is excellent and it is not icy at all, it's amazing. I always get two scoops and then wonder why I did because it is a lot of ice cream but I still eat it all. I gave this place a try after having some business nearby. I was in the mood for a good burger and I usually enjoy drive in style restaurant. These were probably the worst burgers I've ever PAID for. I say paid for because they reminded me of the kind of lousy burger you would get at a lousy company picnic, where they were just cranking them out to feed 300 people. You know the kind that sit in aluminum trays under a warmer for an hour or so. I've been a few times since moving to the neighborhood. First time I just got a cheeseburger. It was pretty good, fresh homemade patty. Since the burger was pretty good, I brought my girlfriend with me the second time. This time we both got burgers, can't say they lived up to the hype. I got the jumbo (double burger) and she got the regular. The came out and the cheese and practically completely melted off the burgers and the patties were like leather. So it leads me to believe someone forgot the burgers were on the grill. I've also had the hot dog with the works which was pretty good, the grilled cheese are great and same with the french fries. I'll give the burgers one more try. Great spot for ice cream though, definitely check it out if you are looking for a good ice cream spot in Watervliet.
