Service at the ice cream window can be a bit slow, depending on how many folks are ahead of you and what they're ordering. But the ice cream is definitely worth the wait (I can only speak for the hard ice cream, as I never order the soft). With so many cars at the ice cream stand less than a mile west on the same road, I expected Frank's to be similarly busy. Fortunately, it was not since it does not have as large a parking area. We were on a mission, in search of Rum Raisin flavor. Frank's carries a decently large selection of Perry's ice cream flavors and a few flavors from Gillette Handmade. FYI, Gillette Creamer is actually Gillette Division of GlacierPoint Enterprises, a family owned and operated food distribution company covering most of eastern New York. It distributes many different brands of ice cream, in addition to Perry's and their house brand, and related dairy products. With only two service windows in the front of their building housing an Italian restaurant in back, service was friendly and thankfully not overly busy. With about a half-dozen people ahead of us, we spent out 10 minutes in line studying the flavors and trying to find the small sign displaying the serving sizes and prices. Our small dishes of ice cream were $5.40 each including tax. Serving portion was average, if not slightly below average. I had the Perry's Rum Raisin, and my wife had the Gillette Handmade Cappuccino Explosion. Neither of us was overly excited upon tasting our choices. The raisins in my ice cream were where all the flavor was. If you didn't get a spoonful with a raisin the ice cream itself had less flavor than an average vanilla. The Cappuccino Explosion had no noticeable coffee flavor, and the "explosion" must have been the pieces of chocolate bars mixed in. read more

How is it possible to overcook clam strips and undercook fries? Well by some mystical sorcery, Franks managed it. Clam roll was disproportionately roll to clams, but not to worry, it was all inedible. Perhaps their ice cream may be worth a trip, but given the speed of service, I wasn't willing to try it. Other menu offerings included veal Parmesan, eggplant parm, pasta, etc. Why? It's a roadside ice cream stand. Stick to that. Highly disappointed. read more

I have been going to Frank's forever always loved it. I have no idea what has happened. Just went there for one small ice cream cone it took over twenty minutes to get with one person in front of me when I got there and I got a tiny soft serve cone that cost 6$. The server walked away from the front counter and disappeared in the back for almost 15 minutes. I will never eat anything there again. This was the worst experience. On Sat. June 21 we went into this restaurant to order something quick to take out. We ordered 2 simple roast beef heroes to go. The server told us to wait outside in the front by the window. It was almost 90 degrees outside. We waited 30 minutes for 2 sandwiches. When we asked about it we were told that they can't sell us the roast beef because something wasn't right with the refrigeration. 30 MINUTES LATER!!! the order totaled $34.95 which is ridiculous for 2 sandwiches to start with! You cannot fake real Italian food. If you want no fuss non-interpretive food look no further than Frank's. Francesco, owner/chef prepares the "usual" fare as if he were preparing it for his Mama. No muss no fuss, simply tasty true to it's origins food. If you have been hankering for a pasta a La carbonara or spicy puttanesca sauce (neither on the menu) give Francesco a day before request and presto he will make it for you. Try the breaded chicken cutlets, a clear favorite and their "to die for" lasagna. The ambience in the restaurant could use a lift but then again the eclectic put together of this and that complements the home quality of your meal. Frank's Ice Cream has the best grilled cheese with bacon and tomato. It was melty and the bacon was perfectly crunchy and not skimpy! Of course the ice cream was great. I had pistachio. A small was pretty big but I didn't mind. A nice little place tucked in between Colonie's hustle and bustle, it's a great place to stop for lunch! They have outdoor seating and a restaurant around back. I've eaten here many times over the years and always the same. Nice friendly service and good comfort food! Nothing has changed. My wife and I came here last night for some ice cream. There was a family of five in front of us, as well as one single gentleman. We waited in line for at least 10 minutes to get our ice cream. Of the party of five, they each ordered some ice cream dessert (two got ice cream bars) and there were some sodas. The gentleman ordered a cone and a drink. There were two people working behind the window... yet it still took 10 minutes. Frank's is known for great ice cream. If you go there just for incredible ice cream you are missing out on their best offering. Tucked behind in the back of the building is the door to their small restaurant. The vodka sauce is the best in the area, and I'm not just saying that. We had the sausage and peppers the other night and they were amazing. Both were so good on our visit that we had them help cater our Father's Day bbq. During this quarantine period we are getting takeout at least once a week. I was in the mood for some home style food and saw an ad for Frank's family meals. We called and had a choice of a few entrees. We chose Meatloaf. It came with mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, salad, rolls and best of all ice cream. The meatloaf was Italian style and served a lot more than four. The meat was rouladen style with red pepper, cheese, Italian seasoning and lots of gravy. The flavor and texture were very good if a little salty. The mashed potatoes were decent enough but what was a surprise was the mixed vegetables. The vegetables looked at first to be the usual canned square carrots, peas and corn.They tasted much better than they looked and were mixed with onions and mushrooms in a tasty sauce. The salad was standard with a few olives thrown in. The rolls were our least favorite part. Stale small sub rolls with a little garlic on them. The ice cream however was the cherry on the cake! What a treat to enjoy some soft ice cream. Overall the meal was a good value and I used the left over meatloaf and vegetables to make chili the next day! read more

I don't go to Frank's often because my husband loves Scoups. He's a city boy who thinks it's cool to see cows while eating... That said, I really need to come here more often. They serve Perry's ice cream which is sentimental because I grew up eating Perry's. There are a few places in the Albany area that make homemade ice cream but they don't have all the cool flavors that Perry's offers. I was pleasantly surprised to have the toasted coconut which was shredded coconut covered in chocolate and tasted like eating an almond joy. The portion sizes are also a little smaller than other places. I normally order a kid's but order a small which is about 2.5 scoops. I'm not sure the location has much going for it. Its tiny and on a busy street, so it doesn't have much ambience. None the less there are some cute rides for little kids. The service is fast and friendly. They're also open year round if you're anything like my grandfather who likes to eat ice cream in the middle of Winter. They do offer some fast food options and Italian fare but I just come here for the ice cream. read more

This review is only for the soft serve. I used to work as a soft serve worker knowing the ins and outs of the business. All I can say is what a disappointment. The reason is the air "or" overrun in the product. The ice creme is pumped with so much air it is like whipped creme. It is weightless, not stiff and you feel like your only getting 2oz for a small when it should be 4-5 oz. the owner is making the novice mistake of trying to pump up profits by shorting the customer, anyways I will bring my business elsewhere. I will revise this post at some later point in time when I go and see the owner has turned down the overrun to recommended levels. read more

I was looking forward to a new low-key, no-frills favorite spot; but as far as hole-in-the-wall, mom and pops go- this probably won't be our go to. Whenever you sacrifice decor and ambience for a true hole in the wall, the food should usually makes up for it. In this case, the food was standard and didn't make the ambience worth a return dine-in (maybe takeout). We came just at the end of their peak rush and sat right down at a booth so that was a plus. We ordered mozzarella sticks to start with both marinara and Melba sauce which were pretty run of the mill. My husband chose the chicken parm (can't go wrong, right?) and I opted for the "rigatoni alla vodka" special with chicken. My meal was pretty tasty and hefty but definitely had a not-so-healthy dose of oil that'll go straight to your coronaries. I really enjoyed the texture of the rigatoni and the creaminess of the vodka sauce. However, the chicken wasn't all that great, something about the seasoning was slightly off- maybe it's better with the shrimp? My husband, however, wasn't impressed with his choice and thought it was greasy and not worth the cholesterol bump. Went one night for ice cream, they were out of aoft serve vanilla and cookie dough. Told us to come back the next night. We did, waited 10 minutes while the singular server did everything but take our order. No concern showed about our wait so we left. Bad service in general. This place is SO disappointing. Went here for soft serve and the quality was sub-par. Nothing worse than soft, soft serve with no flavor. We only visited here looking for ice cream so I have no real input on food. I did see they have an inside seating area in the back, but we enjoyed our ice cream out on the picnic tables in the front. My husband, toddler, and I all ended up with soft ice cream in cones from here. They do have hard ice cream options (made by Perry's) but we just weren't in the mood for that. The soft ice cream was okay. It was near closing, so I'm not sure that effected it, but our ice cream was so soft it was almost not frozen. My husband's cone was dripping before he could even get a lick in. Their staff was friendly but I was also disappointed that their napkins were behind the windows. Once again - maybe because it was close to closing (within 30 minutes), but as a mom of a toddler with an ice cream cone, that was an issue. Nobody was at the window so we had to ring the bell and wait (thank goodness for a mom bag with wipes)! Overall, it was an okay experience. I don't know what the fuss about this place is. I ordered two fish and chip dinners tonight and they tasted bad. They also forgot to bag the tartar sauce we asked for. The fish was Over fried and not very much "meat" on them, they were like breading and skin. I didn't try the ice cream but it's Perry's, so I'm sure it was fine. Very dissatisfied with this meal. At least we have very good alternatives around here. If it wasn't for the young girl who waited on us, I would have rated this place much lower. Warning, this family run Italian food gem hides under the guise of an ice cream shop which is noteworthy in of itself, but won't be discussed in this review. This place has a side entrance that leads to a small, intimate and familial restaurant inside. It is so unassuming from the outside, it might as well be a speakeasy and require a password at the door. But instead when you walk through the door you are greeted with the scent of Italian home cooking and the sound of small boisterous groups of families dining inside. There's about enough seating for 30 people inside, and on this evening every seat was taken. We lucked out when a table for 2 opened up, we sat ourselves and one of the employees brought us menus. If you're looking for a restaurant that is going to coddle you and go over gluten free options and caloric content then this isn't the place for you. If you want phenomenal Italian food, served hot, and legit then you need to stop here. I ordered the shrimp fradiavola which was a heavenly mix of garlic and spice. I ordered it over penne pasta but then found myself regretting that I didn't ask which if any of their pastas were homemade. It didn't matter though because it was amazing. My husband's rigatoni alla vodka with sausage was to die for. I had to resist the urge to lick the plate at the end of the meal. The service was what you'd expect for how hectic things were but our food came out quickly and hot so I won't hold any grudges. As a matter of fact I will be back, maybe when it's not so busy, and will save room for one of their delicious ice cream treats. I felt like they pulled a rabbit out of a hat here, I don't know how they made such amazing food in such a small space. When I see Honey Dipped Fried Chicken on ANY menu- I have to have it!! Their's was respectable - even though it was most likely a frozen product. Crisp, tasty not too greasy.'Generous portion for $8.50 with a meaty breast, leg, wing, and thigh. The H.M. macaroni salad that came with was divine. Yellow with mustard and egg, it also had chucks of celery and shreds of carrot and was super-fresh. The fries were pretty good too - they could have been crispier. The H. M. Pumpkin Soup was quite delicious- thick and creamy and full of flavor. I was impressed. The mocha malted could have been thicker but tasted very good. They serve Perry's hard ice cream...but the soft looks yummy- and I love seeing orange/vanilla twist (creamsicle). 'Will have to return to try it. But hey folks, what I think is very cool - they have an indoor dining area and they serve home made Italian food - who knew? The prices certainly look reasonable...and now, I am really curious about the quality. I have a good feeling about it all. Referred by friends and did not disappoint. First time visit because I always thought it was just an ice cream shop...to the contrary about 10 tables in the back serving Italian ( and I mean homemade pasta and fresh sauce) along with traditional diner food. Had veal and peppers in red pasta dish and an order of garlic pasta with broccoli..both delicious and reasonable priced (14.95) each. Ended up running into two families we knew and we don't even live on this side of town. Perfect place to go when kids want ice cream and you just want to sit down and have a nice lunch or dinner. incredibly perfect place to go on a summer afternoon as the sun is coming down to grab a cone and sit at one of the picnic tables. Parking doesn't exist really, I don't know how they pack some of those cars in the back. If you go inside, there lies a tiny restaurant with simple grub, but believe me go to the front and just get some of their absolutely wonderful ice cream, hard or soft, with tons of varieties and toppings to choose from.
