The former "Bumpy's" for local residents. Amazing flavors. Outdoor seating. Safe area of town. Are they a little pricey. Yup. That's why this is a dessert / treat. Stella's offers a vast selection of flavors of ice cream and custard ( not always easy to find in Albany. ). Staff is friendly and they keep the area clean around the side of the building. This place, under very welcome new ownership, has all of the virtues Bumpy's had -- quick walk-up fast food and your choice of ice cream concoctions of the hard (Perry's), soft, or novelty variety -- and none of the negative karma of the last owners. Service is swift and friendly, although I do suggest they reconsider the walk-up window flow of traffic to add a separate window for pick-up they use *all* the time, since we had to dart in front of customers who were ordering to pick up our ice cream. The parking is still weird and my two standing suggestions for improving the site remain: one, do something about the all-asphalt-blacktop in the customer area and the weirdly sloping picnic benches. I recognize this is cheap and probably was done for drainage, but it's hot as Hades even on mild days, and the picnic benches can be deucedly awkward to sit down at. If there's a budget to relandscape and level this and replace the asphalt with cooler concrete or an eco-friendly material (like the recycled soft material used in some playgrounds) that will withstand dropped cones and rainstorm runoff, that would be fantastic. In the meantime, a little extra shade for customers standing in line would be appreciated. The other is to GET RID OF THE BUMPER BOAT AREA. The idea of bumper boats sounds super cool and we actually tried it once back in the day, and it wasn't nearly as much fun as the concept of bumper boats. And it was never open, and when it was it took forever to get an employee to let you in. And now it's just a festering pool of algae. It would be LOVELY if this could be replaced with some shade, some play structures for the kids, and maybe some seating that's not just picnic tables (cafe style tables, etc.) I realize this is a big $$ outlay for a small business but it's wasting half the footprint of the property and isn't anything but a fetid hazard right now. Finally we're really looking forward to the new owners putting their own stamp on the food fare. That would be a big differentiator and one that might get us to buy the non-ice cream food. For now, though, recommended as an ice cream spot (once again) but on the hottest days, be prepared to broil while you're eating it. Best of luck to the new owners! read more

Stella's is the best around. Their custard is not like the standard stuff you find everywhere, it's especially buttery. I don't know what they add to it but it's so good. Really creative flavors too! My favorite is the vanilla malt milkshake. My husband loves their butterscotch milkshake. I haven't even tried the hard ice cream because the custard is so good, but they always have great sounding flavors for that too. Friendly staff, great food & delicious ice cream!! My husband and I were passing ( we pass constantly and there's always a line) so we decided to check it out! We weren't expecting too much as far as food but we both ordered the fish fry meal. We both got it with tartar sauce but I got sweet potato fries and he got street fries. The fish had a great crisp! The crazy part about all of this was that I was raised on bumpy's ice cream. Even when the racist owned it my African American family still received excellent customer service. If 0 stars were an option, it'd be zero. I was dying for a chocola oreo shae, whoch is my go to, and absolutely delicious. i ordered 2 shakes, nachos, and churros. I attempted to order a chilli dog, but conveniently no chilli today apparently. Ok fine. I place my order and while waiting im noticing how absolutely filthy the entire area was. Ice cream spilled everywhere, literally every table. No napkins, no umbrellas for shade, and a bandage stuck to one of the table tops. I was so disgusted I stood while waiting for my order. I can't image anyone in the now forming line , would have stayed there to eat. Now again, my shake was great.. the nachos how ever were not. The cheese was curdled throughout the entire soufflé cup. Such disappointment. For $19 I expect a little effort. I didn't have time to drive back and get it replaced with more chunky cheese so instead im posting a buyers beware!!! When you get to be my age (33), ice cream becomes less of a treat and more of a hobby. It's usually not a question of "should we go get ice cream this weekend?" and more often "ice cream for dinner?" We discovered Stella's because we heard it took the place of Bumpy's, which was elegantly shut down after everyone finally realized the owner was a word-I-probably-shouldn't-say-on-Yelp. It's much better now anyways. We've been here five times in the last six weeks. It's become our new go to ice cream spot, and we've loved getting an easy, summer meal beforehand as well. My favorite touch is that they actually came up with sundaes specifically for kids. Unicorn Poop? I mean come on. If you haven't eaten the frozen excrement of a mythical creature, you haven't lived. My second favorite touch is that they have custard, which if you've ever been to a beachside boardwalk, you'll know it's vastly superior to soft serve ice cream and I will die on that hill. The only drawback is the location, but mostly because there's a lot of idiots who like to show off how noisy their cars are and how much faster they can get to the next red light. Certainly not Stella's fault, but going forward I'd suggest an incentive program: drive by the shop ten times going the speed limit, get a free cone. Anyways. This place rules. And I hope it lasts.
