I have driven past this place dozens of times over the years, as its shadow falls on the best model railroad store in the Capital District. Still, I didn't bother to come here until a friend recommended it. I can't say I am on a "ice cream tour" of places in the area (sigh... Dan, we miss your FLB tours!) but I have been trying new places recently. So, on a nice summer evening we drove over to explore. First off, the place is clean. And not in a pandemic sort of way. I mean it has lots of nice cute tables with umbrellas, park benches, and well manicured lawns that combined give the impression of a really quaint, nice, clean place. Old farm machinery was distributed around the grounds but unlike my in-laws' farms, it was more visual interest than "the next fix-it-up project." This place serves Perry's ice cream, my wife's favorite being as we are from western NY. I have lived in the Capital District for 16 years but in the past 4 I have found more places serving Perry's than the previous 12 combined. Either they are branching out or I have a newly activated Perry's radar in my brain. Beep... beep... beep. I had their "peanut butter smore" ice cream in a dish with crushed nuts on top. It was great, though perhaps there were too many nuts and I couldn't taste everything else. My wife had a strawberry sundae with the ice cream of choice being "apple pie." I really like On the Farm, it's a place I have been coming to for years. I prefer this spot over Guptills, which is the other local favorite. I mostly like coming here for ice cream, but they have some nice and reasonably priced fast food style meal items. I purchased a kiddie and medium twist on my recent trip, the total was $6.70. I'd say that amount is about average. The ice cream was very creamy and delicious. Even a little bit better than Kurver. This is a cute place with nice seating. I was a little disappointed with my sundae. I asked for no whipped cream and it came with it anyways. I pointed it out to the girl at the window and she seemed annoyed. She asked if she could just scrape it off and I told her that's fine. The biscuit portion isn't homemade but just your typical dessert shell which was still frozen when served. The strawberries were good and a nice portion but seemed to be the usual restruant supply strawberries and also were still partial frozen when served. It wasn't a complicated sundae but seemed to have issues in several areas. On a positive they do offer the trending caramel volcano cone that a lot of people are talking about lately. read more

I'm still not that into soft serve. But I still consider On the Farm to be the best-in-class locally for the stuff. Seriously, as much as I drive around the Capital Region looking for the very best versions of the stuff, there's only so far I'm willing to go on a regular outing for soft serve. When my brother-in-law came visiting earlier this summer, and brought his family, this was the perfect place to take a gaggle of hungry kids. Not just for ice cream, but for food as well. While I had never tried the food before, I had heard encouraging noises. The burger looked delicious: greasy and cheesy in all the best possible ways. One of the kids ordered grilled cheese, and that too was delightfully golden. So many grilled cheese sandwiches are rushed and get toasted only in the center. But this one was beautiful. I'm on a diet, so begrudgingly I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, and prepared for the worst. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty the thin chicken cutlet was in the sandwich. Even the veg was bright and lively. My wife's fish fry was not quite as good. And I can't say I was crazy about under-seasoned french fries. Yes, there is salt at the window. However, fries are always best when tossed with salt immediately out of the oil. Is it perfect? Nope. Is it excellent? You bet. Maybe there are better places further away. Maybe they are even worth the trip. But for my money, and for the happiness it brings the kids, On the Farm is my summertime staple. read more

This is a fun ice cream stand. The flavors are diverse and really good. I understand this place has been a staple in Latham for a long time, and I can see why. On an exploration to find the best soft serve ice cream in the area, I bookmarked On The Farm. I was interested in trying it as a dipped cone after seeing a few delicious looking photos from some friends. We went as a group of 5 expecting some awesome ice cream. Sad to say, those who had the hard ice cream thought that the flavors were overly sweet and said it would be more kid friendly. A friend and I had the vanilla soft serve with cake batter dip and the vanilla soft serve with chocolate dip. By the time the dipped cones were handed over to us at the pick up window, it already began to melt. Within 3 minutes time my cone was melted down to ice cream soup...meaning a large puddle of vanilla on the table I sat at. Not only my dipped cone had that effect but also my friend's. I'd say only 25% of the actual ice cream made it to my mouth. The cake batter and chocolate dip was also very thin. We left disappointed and wanted to go elsewhere to satisfy our sweet tooth. I'm not sure what went wrong but that poor ice cream just went to feed the table and the ground. We were the only people at the stand on a weekday around 1pm. If you do go here, take advantage of the Yelp check in offer of 10% off ice cream order! Also I wish to give my condolences also for your most recent tragic loss of Nick Huban... I don't remember him specifically but I know that the business was always run kind and generous with serving the costumers... I remember them every so often giving me a free food when I arrived and was in a seizure while making an order from the biking distance... I tried On the Farm for the first time today. While the soft serve vanilla ice cream was good, that was about it. I ordered a medium vanilla cone with rainbow sprinkles. $5.00! I feel like that's pricey for one cone. THEN, I am handed the smallest medium I've ever seen & it looks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In my opinion, that's unacceptable. I went to this outdoor eatery today with my family, expecting a nice place to get food and ice cream. We ordered four things: a double burger, french fries, a grilled cheese, and chicken tenders. Out of the four, only one was edible. The burger was saturated with grease. When picked up, the bun began to disintegrate and grease literally dripped off the burger. The bun was far too small and cheap for the amount of meat and grease on it. The grilled cheese was similarly greasy. It was inedible and half of it had to be thrown out. The french fries were also terrible. They were not cooked long enough. Not only were they mushy, some of the larger fries were actually raw in the center. We threw out most of the two orders of fries that we bought, Out of all the food, the only thing remotely edible was the chicken tenders, which were mediocre frozen tenders that had been fried. If you have to come here for some reason, get the chicken I guess, but I certainly wouldn't recommend coming here! We didn't even end up trying their ice cream since the food was so terrible. Aside from the food, the experience was passable but not great. We would have liked to see tables that were actually in the shade rather than under a sad umbrella, since the majority of the table ended up in the sun and it was a very hot day. It made it impossible for my family to sit at one table, since more than half of the table was scorching hot. read more

This is like the world's greatest miniature golf course, but without the miniature golf course. Decent snack food stand, with the ice cream a bit pricey ($3.45 for a medium soft serv). Water ice, sherbet, and Perry's hard ice cream available. It's not really the food but the eat outside milieu. There's a bunch of old farm machinery artfully displayed around, and a number of inhabited bird houses. Lots of picnic tables, with an awning for ducking out of the sun and rain. The farm I think is gone, but the lot is an opening onto some of the last greenspace in this part of Latham (private property; but the Latham Ridge Woodspath starts to the rear, access at the end of Grove Ave.) so more power to the owners for keeping it "On the Farm". I realize mini golf is in eclipse right now, but I do look at those green spaces on either side of the stand and all that awesome farm equipment and it's hard not to think of how awesome it would be to start putting through the thresher and plows. read more

We ended up here the other night after looking for ice cream. Their prices are reasonable and the atmosphere was nice. The parking is ample and there's plenty of picnic tables. Even though it's right on a busy road, you're set far enough back that I didn't worry too much about my toddler walking around. They have some limited soft serve flavors (chocolate & vanilla & flavor of the week). They have a decent selection of Perry's hard ice cream. I got some hard cookie dough and had some ice chunks in it - not sure if it was the ice cream or freezer burn type - but it did detract a bit. We did not try the food, but would probably do so in the future. read more

So I am perplexed by all the high star ratings - are people nostalgic for the good old days like 15-20 years ago when I was a young tyke and thought On The Farm was the greatest thing since sliced bread? So I have the same gripe with this place that I have with several other ice cream places - go out on a limb and try to make some hard serve ice cream because the Perry's ice cream is absolutely disgusting - like vomit inducing disgusting. Farmati please!!!! For those of you that don't know, a farmati is this place's version of gelato which is Italian ice and soft serve. Mind blown. We elected for piña colada shaved ice and vanilla/chocolate twist. Wow. Amazing. Didn't try the food on this visit but I will. This place was perfect for what we needed. My bf and I showed up on Mother's day looking for a quick lunch that wasn't our usual Chipotle stand-by. The food was moderately quick for a busy day, the tables were clean and they have Perry's (which had a nostalgic touch since I'm originally from outside of Buffalo where the stuff is made). I got a grilled chicken sandwich and my date got a spicy chicken sandwich and we split some waffle fries. Waffle Fries were meager (sad face) but crunchy and perfect. My sandwich was much more than I would expect from a road stand place. I got the "dill sauce" on the side which was awesome... I think it was just mayo, sour cream and fresh dill. Perfect for the sandwich and the fries to dip. I tried a sip of my bf's strawberry milkshake and it was gross, but I hate strawberry flavored stuff and it just tasted like fake syrup to me. I guess 4.20 or w/e it was for the shake seemed extreme. (At that point buy a pint of ice cream at the store YOU KNOW?) Maybe all milkshakes are this expensive now? I'm midly lactose intolerant so I don't keep up on this stuff. Maybe I'm turning into and old person that thinks more than 2 dollars for an ice cream cone shows that there is SOMETHING WRONG with society. Great Ice cream as others have noted. While it is just a little bit pricey for ice cream, its definitely worth the price. Very fast too. If you're ordering soft serve it almost feels like someone in the back is making it before you even pay. The portions are very large, a "kids" size is about the size of a soda can, and for the sundaes you can get several different toppings. I don't order from the grill often but the food is pretty good there as well. A tip, if you'ore interested in trying something special like the hot fudge brownie with ice cream, try ordering a sundae instead and asking for what you want as a topping. You can get ice cream with brownie and chocolate syrup (practically the same thing) for half the price. Make sure to get a punch card when you go! This place sucks! !!!!!!!! The place itself is opened until 9pm and we got there at 7.50pm, there were a few people ahead of us so we stood in line for about 10 minutes. When we got to order we were told the grill was closed. .....it was 7.59pm at that time, I explained to the rude young lady that we had been standing in line for a few minutes already but I could clearly see the grill was off and already cleaned. She went in the back and came out after a minute saying sorry but grill is closed, I advised her she should update her sign to advise grill closes at 7.45pm but she couldn't have cared less. We left. They have a sign out front saying "gluten free". When we asked what ice cream was gluten free a bitchy woman from behind the counter said all ice cream is gluten free. My wife said no it is not may I see the ingredients of the soft serve? The woman told us they didn't have the ingredients. We asked what brand it was and she told us Crowley. We tried to look it up on our phones and couldn't even find that Crowley made ice cream. All the signs at the place say Perry's. My wife ended up not getting anything. My daughter and I got cones. There was nothing special about it at all. $7 for a kiddie cone and a small cone. Having to eat gluten-free is not an option for everyone. It's nice that they offer the gluten-free cones, but why some people must be so rude and unwilling to help another human being is beyond me. read more

They now have gluten free buns for the burgers and gf cones! The cones are a little smaller but a smaller cone is better then no cone. We found that the GF buns were pretty tasty considering they are gf. I am so glad that they offer these choices now as this means we can stop by for a treat. I went to this place with a friend after driving by for the first time and circling back to get some ice cream. The establishment looked large, clean and respectable from the roadway so we pulled in. We were the only ones patronizing at the time on a Saturday mid-day. The menus are extensive and we were there for the first time. I asked what a Farmatti was and was told by the young lady at the window that it was a combo of ice cream and Italian ice. The menu board had 4 flavors to choose from. None of them were available! There was a very rude woman standing next to the young lady ready to spring to action to get the items we would have ordered. When the rude woman stated what 2 flavors she did have, I did not here her from inside the shop. The young lady stated the 2 flavors available and I selected blueberry but then the woman ran to the back of the store to get it and stated something again from back there to the young lady and it turned out they didn't have what she offered as substitutes after all. She said they had lemon. I was turned off by the thought of lemon ice and ice cream as a combination so I decided to go for a Perry's. The old crow who pouted and probably stamped her feet because I wasn't missile-launch ready, decided to dote on a small baby roaming around toward the open back door with a gal who was likely the child's mother and an employee since she was wearing a uniform t-shirt. I asked the young lady if the mean woman was pissed-off because I didn't choose the lemon she was prepared to retrieve and she didn't respond. I asked if she was the owner and she said yes. I said she either hates it here or she's in the wrong business. My friend placed his order from the Perry's menu and when the witch brought it to the window she was twisted around to run to the back door to say goodbye as proven by her picking up the baby and hugging it. This distraction resulted in nearly dropping the ice cream cone she thrust at my friend. Now my friend saw the proof of my earlier suspicion of the owner's bad attitude. Our ice cream cones at over $8 were melting as she handed them from inside the store. All over us. We ran to the tables on the side to let the table be the drip catcher rather than our shirts. The woman was now at the back door of the car the baby and the mom were getting in to depart from the back of the shop. From there the nasty hag was scouting for debris and wiping the tables. She had a golden opportunity to inquire of our pleasure or not of our experience but chose to say nothing. This was a chance for her to redeem herself and ensure a repeat visit to her store. But, no! Beware if paying with a credit card. The old man behind the counter doesn't know how to use the credit card machine and wanted to charge me twice. He insisted it didn't go thru even tho the receipt printed the word sale before jamming. I wouldn't let him scan it again and said I would just pass on the ice cream. Politely. He got really snippy and condescending telling me to calm down he'd give me the ice cream anyway. I said no thanks and asked him not to speak to me in such a way ( I mean he was *really* patronizing and condescending). He started yelling at me so my son and I left.
