Memorial Day arrival, warm weather, and a bare refrigerator was the sign it was time for the annual trip to Country Drive-In for a traditional sausage sandwich. An earlier email reminder from the Mealeo CEO that I had over $3 in Mealeo credits reminded me that this would be a good opportunity to place my order at Country Drive-In through Mealeo to take advantage of my rewards. I was initially surprised that upon placing our order at 6:30 pm that it was not going to be ready until 7:15. But when I arrived at CD-I at 7:10 I could better understand. They were slammed with customers. I let the pickup window know that I was there for my order, and they said they would check on it. At exactly 7:15 they brought my order to the window. Ahh, reliable efficiency! My wife had decided to order a Tuna Melt ($8.39), I went traditional with the Sausage sandwich ($9.59), and a large order of Homemade Onion Rings ($7.19) for us to share. The Tuna Melt had little if any tuna flavor, very disappointing. The Sausage was one of the best I've had from them (there have been some off years recently). It was just greasy enough with the peppers and onions on top of the sausage patty that the fresh and soft brioche bun (not the hard roll indicated on the menu) prevented any loss of drippings for a flavorful bite each time. Staff are friendly and efficient. They have staff constantly wiping the picnic tables and benches to keep them clean for customers who eat on their property. Considering that, I enjoy going to outside food/ice cream stands and Country Drive-In is one of the best. In view of this, I ordered a cheeseburger with fried onions, cheese fries, onion rings, and a sausage and peppers sandwich. Knowing that, the cheeseburger was pretty good. The burger was juicy and flavorful and fried onions were tasty. In the same vein, the fries were hot, crispy, and the cheese was delicious. Furthermore, the onion rings were excellent. They were crunchy, fresh, and had great flavor. These were top tier onion rings. On the other hand, the sausage and peppers sandwich was not very good. To elaborate, it was a sausage patty instead of a link which is a terrible choice for a sandwich. In addition, the bun was a bit stale. A rare miss for Country Drive-In. After my meal, I treated myself to some ice cream and it was scrumptious. To explain, the ice cream was creamy and the cone was nice and crunchy. I used to stop by the county drive in from time to time when I was driving by on a warm summer day. Last week wasn't warm, but I thought...how about ice cream for lunch? I decided to try the non dairy (oat milk) frozen yogurt with a chocolate dip. Frozen yogurt-especially the non dairy kind, is definitely not creamy ice cream, but it's cold and tasty. It did the trick. The soft ice cream was reportedly really good-that was a vanilla with a cherry dip. There's a whole section with food that I'd like to try sometime. My family just came here for the first time for ice cream on family date night. The weather was perfect (low 80s), and the line was long. We managed to just get the last parking spot available, and I can't imagine what the next person arriving would have done (more on that later). We waited for a couple of minutes without moving when I decided to ask someone else if this line was for ice cream. We were told "no", that it was only for food, and were pointed to the ice cream line. That saved us a lot of time that might have been otherwise wasted. But wow, that food line was LONG and barely moved. In the ice cream line we saw their sundae options but nothing related to flavors they offered. When we asked, we were told to look at a sign on the side of the building. That was helpful, but for newbies some more signage related to things like this would be helpful. I mean common... they only had four flavors. They could post it above their order window too! I ordered the soft serve mint chocolate ice cream. It came out very fast, but literally within two seconds it had flopped over onto my shirt. That was annoying, because chocolate stains. They at first offered an empty dish to put it in, then offered to remake it, but the second one still flopped. Either it is always very soft, or they were mishandling it. Anyone ordering more than a small (which is what I got) should be on high alert of this. Because of the melting, I wolfed it down. My wife's ice cream was also very soft. I wonder what it is like in the heat of summer. Table were plentiful but we ate fast because we couldn't slow down and enjoy the ice cream. When we left, someone had illegally parked and blocked in my car. It took repeated maneuvers just to slip by. Hitting him... which I didn't do... would have sucked. There are precious few months in the Capital Region when eating outside seems like a good idea. Aside from today's unseasonably high temperature, now is the time to get to Country Drive-In for ice cream, burgers, and fried things. Hopefully, it's after some bout of physical activity that can help you justify the calories you are about to enjoy. But hey, sometimes you just have to treat yourself to a few of those old fashioned pleasures. I really want to get back and try the larger burger on the hard roll to see how it compares to the standard sized offerings. It looks delicious. And truth be told, the standard burger isn't all that delicious. Yes, it's cooked over an open flame, but it's also dry. The best way to enjoy one of them is in the CDI burger. That's effectively a patty melt with bacon. It adds extra fat and extra flavor. But really, unless you have to have a burger, even that is skippable. I'd be happy just making a meal out of a small order of supper crisp onion rings followed by a chocolate soft serve cone. That's dairy, vegetables, protein, and carbs right there. If you dip your onion rings in ketchup, you've even got the fruit category covered. A square meal, if you ask me. In the heat of summer, I typically don't have that much appetite anyway, so that sounds just about perfect. The best part of the burger is the smell of them cooking on the grill. And that's free for all those who are eating their food on the grounds. Overall, Country Drive In is a regional gem. It's an oasis from the chains, and it's a quintessential Capital Region summer time stop. Hopefully, over time, I'll make it through enough of the menu to find something that I truly love. Country Drive-In is one of the places that makes Clifton Park great! We love stopping in here Spring, Summer, and Fall to grab burgers, shakes, and ice cream! It's a charming place and the food and service are always phenomenal. We almost always order ahead for pick-up through the Mealeo app to avoid waiting in line. They have a very spacious parking lot behind the building for Mealeo pick-up orders, which are usually ready within about 20 minutes of placing your order, depending on how busy they are. They have a good system in place where you text them when you arrive and they will bring your food to your car. The burgers are consistently great. Our go-to is the build-your-own 1/4 lb cheeseburger. They have lots of milkshake and malt flavors to choose from, including orange blossom and pineapple, in addition to more classic flavors. The strawberry milkshake even comes with real pieces of strawberry! They have a great menu, including plenty of fish options, salads, chicken sandwiches, and hot dogs. If this walk up ice cream and grill stand were closer to my house I probably would spend way too much time here!!! Yep all of the other reviews that rave about how great their onion rings are were spot-on... best I've ever had. If onion rings are your thing it is totally worth a serious drive just to get the rings here, they are that good. A large size is 4.99 and I believe a small was 3.99. I'd say three people can split a large and have plenty to enjoy. I got a basic quarter pounder with the works and everything on it was really fresh, but like at least one other review had said, the burger itself was dry. It was just plain overcooked...typical, and honestly I was expecting that. My wife had a chicken spiedie sandwich that was a huge breast that surprisingly wasn't dry at all and was actually really juicy and it had been marinated for a long time. It was $6.99, but she said she would get it again. The basic Quarter Pounder I had was something like $3 and change. I would not get it again though I did enjoy the fresh veggies they put on it. We did see people leaving the walk-up window with their fish fry or clam baskets and I definitely would try one of those out if I was really hungry as they give you a lot of food. Line was pretty long, with maybe 20 in it, but it was a Friday night in the summer on a very nice evening, so not much to complain about there. Line moved pretty quickly. They are smart and they have a separate walk-up window for ice cream treats only. All the tables seemed super clean and there was plenty of staff around working hard. I finally made it to Country Drive-In at the urging of Josh K., who says it has the best onion rings he's ever had. They're certainly very very good, big strands of natural onion that maintain their identity within tasty but not over-greasy breading. Happy discovery: a squirt of Pete's Red-Hot sauce for dipping on the side of the basket is a great add-in. Country Drive-In is serious about their food, as evidenced by the warning sign in the window that if you want to have a 1/2 pound burger you should say so at the beginning of your order so they can get it cooking. We settled for the 1/3 pounders that arrived with our requested combinations of condiments, fetchingly presented under a sheet of wax paper like a shy bride with a veil. Also tried the mini-dogs with the works which were a workmanlike example of that genre. Chicken Spiedies and fried pickles called our name, but we have to save something for next time. I had thought of Country Drive-In as being tucked away in the winding country roads of Clifton Park, but it's actually a quick 3 minutes off the Northway, at the exit where I get my gas. I came here with my boyfriend after reading numerous good reviews. Once we got here, we waited in a long line as it was very busy. We ordered crispy chicken sandwiches and onion rings. The chicken was very small and mostly batter with lots of lettuce, onions, tomato and pickles. The issue however was not just the very small piece of chicken that was mostly batter, but the amount of cartilage left on the chicken and the fact that it was rubbery and mostly tasteless. There is nothing more fun in the summertime than going to an old fashioned drive-in and I am lucky enough to live closeby to this one. The food is greasy but thats the point. The burgers are good and come in either 1/4lb or 1/2lb. They also have mini hot dogs, but the real piece de resistance is the Michigan fries. French fries with cheese and meat sauce. I got an order to split with my gf and ended up having to go back in line about halfway thru and order another, they were so good. The ice cream is pretty good and last year when I went here they had a watermelon sherbet/ vanilla twist. I still dream about it and hope they have it regularly, but they didn't this trip. You bet. What's unique is that they also have different flavored twists every day. I've tried the watermelon sherbet twist with vanilla and that adds a tang to the sweetness of vanilla. I really like the vanilla with pistachio twist. Don't forget to try some of their food items. Their burgers are juicy and flavorful. Their fries are crispy on the outside while tender on the inside. I wasn't a big fan of their hot dog and sauerkraut. I thought the hot dog was a bit dry and the sauerkraut didn't have much flavor. When I was a kid we came year a few times a year for ice cream, never to eat though. I just remember their food much better than what I recently experienced. In the past, I always ordered their 1/4lb cheese burger and Michigan fires and never was disappointed. This time was different, I ordered the 1/2lb burger and a order of Michigan fries. I know it is a frozen burger patty but it had no seasoning (salt and pepper) on it. I literally only eat half the burger because it was just bland and gross. The Michigan fries were good, just as I had in the past. Maybe if I go back this year I will have to try their steak sandwich or fish fry. They also have a variety of dips, toppings and sundaes available and they make yummy milkshakes and flurries. The servings are huge and the prices are great! They make great onion rings and since you order at the window and then wait for your food to be ready, everything is hot and fresh.
