The TVs were so loud in this place you couldn't even hear the person across the table from you. When we went in the bartender told us to order at the bar so we sat down and pondered the menu before trying to order at the bar. We were then told that we'd get a server. Several minutes later someone else comes over and says we need to order at the bar. What a disaster. My friend's vegetarian wrap came with bacon in it. I didn't eat so I can't comment on the food but anything else was a big no. read more

I was not happy with this food at all. I ordered a specialty burger cooked medium with fries. My burger was dry and badly over cooked and my fries were cold, under cooked, and flopped around. When I explained to the waiter the issues he srugged, said sorry and walked off. I was NOT offered another burger or any discount off my food. This was a $100+ ticket. My husband and his friend ordered wings and said they were edible. Another person with us ordered a salad and said it was good. We had to return our tea's because they were bad. We were never offered refills for the drinks we ended up up. There was a mistake on our ticket that we told him needed to correct. The seats were NOT comfortable because they were at an unusual hight. We will never eat there again and would NOT recommend this restaurant. read more

We were visiting our son, and due to Covid he was really hesitant to eat inside a restaurant. Mac's has lots of great seating outside, so we snagged a table. It was mid-afternoon so we were just looking for a snack, and their fried pickles were to do for! I absolutely would go back just for those! The hot pretzel appetizer was great too. Only complaint was that you are sitting on rickety folding chairs. Mid way through our stop my chair just collapsed with no warning - I was really lucky that I didn't bang my head against the brick outer wall of the building (since I was sitting next to it).  After getting up and dusting myself off, we found a waiter and told him what had happened. He didn't ask if I was okay or anything, he just took the chair and went back inside. We grabbed a replacement chair from a nearby table and resumed eating. About 5 minutes later he walked back out of the restaurant with my chair (it had a distinctive mark on it) that they must have knocked back together and set it at a table for the next unsuspecting customer. I would have rated this location higher had they showed more concern and/or didn't just set my chair back out. read more

We had a group in Mac's this past Friday night to celebrate my son's 23rd Birthday. Had a great time until closing time and the bouncer forcefully removed two of his friends from the bar. We had a group of 12 of us and were treated like scum. The problem I have is how he handled the situation while allowing about 12 patrons to sit at the bar and finish their drinks. The atmosphere and experience was a lot of fun until the bouncer overstepped his boundaries. Beware of this guy and his attitude at the end of the night. I told Charleston police about how the situation was handled and rounded up our crew to disperse. Hopefully the owners will reel this bouncer to eliminate future problems. read more

This place had poor service. We are chicago transplants and we're excited to have old styles and Italian beef sandwiches but we did not order them. This place charges $15 for an Italian beef sandwich. In Chicago those same sandwiches are $8. They charge $10.29 for a Chicago style hot dog, with no sides. In Chicago, they're $2.50. This place is horribly overpriced. Even though I miss the food from home I won't pay those prices. It's price gouging. I suggest skipping this place. read more

I don't even know where to begin with this review. Our server barely served us as the guests in this place. She only checked in on our party of 9 once. We waited over an hour for our food. just for it to come out cold and wrong. She apologized and proceeded to give us attitude with rolled eyes and an unfriendly tone in her voice. The last thing I ever thought I would see here in Charleston, would be a Chicago Sports Bar. What a bonus and what a find, just by walking down East Bay Street, I had to do a double take and walk in to see what this was all about. I guess it is no secret that I am originally a native Chicagoan and very loyal Bears, Cubs, Blackhawks and Bulls fan, not necessarily in that order, so when I saw this we had to think of a good time to make a stop here for some great football this weekend, and being that the Rose Bowl was New Years Day late in the afternoon, we were going to make sure we got seats at the bar. Why was that so important, when we were not even able to watch the Bears-Minnesota game on Sunday? Because Mac's serves the original Vienna Beef and Hot Dogs that every Chicagoan grew up with and learned to love. So for any great sporting event, we were going to get here and take a break from the fine dining experiences here in Charleston and have a Chicago Beef Sandwich, Hot Dog or both!!! We arrived about 4:15 pm and luckily got 2 spots at the bar. When we came in on Sunday to see how crowded it was, there was not a seat in the house because both the Bears and Packers games were both on, so we were happy to just get there before the first of 2 Semi Final Bowl games. There were TV's everywhere, loyal Georgia sports fans for the Rose Bowl, and the vibe you would expect for an exciting sports bar. The dining room and bar was scattered with Cubs and Bears flags, and the walls going to the bathroom had a line of photos of old Chicago Sports Figures. Lots of nostalgia. There were plenty of tables and booths throughout the whole dining area which had plenty of visual coverage along the back walls where the booths are, larger big screens on the back wall and several behind the bar. When we sat at the bar, I had already asked the day before about the Vienna Dogs and Beef, but looking at this menu, there is so much more. Mac's has an extensive choice of burgers and chicken sandwiches, and even Boar's Head Turkey and Ham Sandwich's, Cuban Sandwiches and several Wraps. Their "Munchies" menu is not only extensive, but has some really different choices: Fried Pickles, Stuffed Pretzels, as well as the normal chicken wings, nachos, etc. Plenty of soups and salads as well. The Beer menu was impressive, and plenty of Goose Island selections to chose from among 30 choices of beers by the bottle. Lots of Draught and Can beers as well. Wine and Full liquor bar as well besides the beer. My wife ordered the Grilled Chicken Tenders and Sweet Potato Tots. Great portion which she could not finish. I did Chicago all the way. I drank Matilda from Goose Island Brewery and it they went down smooth. I was excited to have my Vienna Beef Sandwich and it was served with a great portion of Beef on a Hoagie Roll, covered with Giardiniera Peppers, moist beef and even moister when I poured that Au Jus over the sandwich. They did it perfectly. What a kick, and I got my fill for sure. We had such a great time here at the bar and the clientele was diverse and of all ages, but all interested in food and sports. The servers behind the bar were so friendly and always there to refill and serve food as they were on top of everything. Plenty of servers to cover the busy crowd here. So, as we were leaving, I saw electronic games along the side wall, a Pac Man Table game that went back 35 years ago, and a room with two dart boards with a scoreboard for serious dart players. Besides Mac's being a GREAT Chicago Pub, it has so much more and the atmosphere was fun, lively with plenty of help to let us have a great time. Next time I am going to come a lot more hungry and try some of their other menu items. Nice Job Mac's!!! read more

I absolutely love this place. Every time I am downtown I find myself stopping in this Chicago themed sports bar. The atmosphere is super relaxed and inviting. They have dart boards and various other electronic games for your amusement. If you are hungry, they have an ample food menu. I recommend the mac n' cheese bites. If you wanna just relax and have a beer, they bar stretches the length of the building with plenty of seating to accommodate. The beer list and cocktail menus are just about as long as the bar having a flavor for anyone's taste buds. If you are looking for adventure, try the Chicago dog bloody mary which comes with all the fixens. Mac's Place is amazing for a laundry list of reasons, most importantly, its real. All we wanted was to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink or 2 more before going back to the hotel, but we were not getting the best service. It wasn't that busy, so I am not sure what the issue was. Finally we got our beers and we were carrying on, decided to get a shot of tequila. The bartender very unenthusiastically handed us the shot of Espolon, and didn't offer a lime?!!!!! It was so warm, and I mean who does tequila with no lime? I love a good sports/dive bar but this one I could absolutely do without. All sports and beer junkies needs seem to be well thought out and appointed with, a bar as long as a bowling alley lane, signage, TV's at every turn, posters, banners, taps hanging from the rafters -- all kept my attention vehemently and with reckless abandon. Mac's Place, very nice establishment. We went there twice on our visit to Charleston. Servers are very efficient, very nice and attentive to us as well as all the patrons. Cecile, Stephanie, Ashley & Sarah all waited on us. They were very nice, respectful and friendly !!!The food was very good. However, the big guy behind the bar, Matt...maybe an acting manager, was rude, obnoxious and definitely didn't put the patrons first and was not very nice!!! Mac's Pub is an old fashion Irish bar. The bartender reminds me of a crabby math high school teacher that I would be afraid to ask a question. Not the friendliest dude at first. I do t even know where to start with this place. What a blast! First off, being a die hard Packers fan, going to a full on Chicago bar in South Carolina was not my first choice. But my much more beautiful lady is a Bears fan, so I sucked it up,and went in. And this place instantly became our favorite for the visit. There is Chicago stuff everywhere. And I do mean everywhere. Every nook and cranny has something stashed in it, and it's amazing. The staff were all completely out of this world friendly. We went 4 separate evenings in our 7 day stay and hands down, Matt and Whitney made it truly memorable. Their food is awesome, and their wings definitely deserve being named the best in Charleston. The beer selection is top notch, and the pinball/video games will bring out the kid in you. Stop here for a pint and some wings. It will quickly become your favorite too except for one thing.... She got the order right, and was pleasant, though I think the service was a bit slower than I'd like as I was in a hurry as my parking meter expired. However, it was a huge salad, the tea was weak. I didn't have a good tea in Charleston while in Charleston and I must say very disappointed. I think it should be the sweet tea/tea capitol??? Anyway, hubby got a chili dog and fries and it was a huge dog with lots of chili. He said meh; but he forgets we were in S Caroliina and their sauce there is different. Duh! On October 31, 2020 at approximately 2020 Ellen Ripley and I, S. Brett, stopped into Mac's Pub and Grub for a bite to eat. It had been since before the outbreak since we had visited and had things changed! After being cleared by security for entry, we sat at a prominent table near the right of the door, in plain view of the bar (close to the Boxer). That's when the wait began. While we waited we perused the online menu because paper ones are available upon request. As it would turn out, we had more than enough time to decide on dinner. 2030 hours, no contact. 2035 hours, a male in a Glatt jersey attempted to get an entertainment machine powered up for a couple of quinquagenarian patrons. Upon his failure, he moved back behind the bar. 2040 hours, no contact. 2050 hours, no contact. 2055 hours, inquired if, as one of the many changes, there was a new way to order. There isn't. Security moved to locate a server. He assured us someone would be on the way. 2100 hours, no contact. 2105 hours, no contact. 2108 hours, discover the couple next to us also had not been served. The dark haired server took their order and then moved to us. No "Sorry for the wait", no explanation why it took so long. Just a "What can I get you". Orders placed. I'm not wasting the time to describe them. You may be wondering why we didn't just leave. Simple, RONA has the food options limited. Simple desire, crowd, and actual offerings kept us in our seat. For the last time. 2114 hours, drink order, water, arrives. 2128 hours. FOOD ARRIVES. The food, however, was amazing. The sweet potato tots were just as I remembered them in that pre-rona world. The burger was also very tasty. I seem to remember more choices for pre-fabbed burgers, but maybe it is just a transposed memory. So I went to the bar and ordered 3 shots of Patron. The bartender charged me $39.00 I and shorted me $20. In change!!! Would have loved to be able to write a more in depth review, however that was not possible. We sat and watched the server pass our table two times without so much as a hello. I then went to the bar to attempt to at least get started with drinks, but was told I couldn't get drinks at the bar and the server would be with us. We let another few minutes pass and watched the same server bring drinks to the table behind us and then greet a table of 4 girls who had walked in well behind us. My boyfriend & I have become regular patrons of Mac's due to us just moving here and both originally being from Chicago. We've sat both at the bar and at tables with servers. We had no issue with the service we received at the bar but anytime we've sat at a table, we've had poor service. This is coming from two people who have years of experience in the service industry. Personally, I believe that the customer service can make or break an experience for someone. As Chicago natives, we can't say the food is 100% spot on but we do enjoy it so we have no complaints about that. I don't think I should have to wave down my server anytime I want/need something and that's exactly what we've had to do. We also don't love feeling like anytime we ask for something it's an inconvenience- again this is coming from people who work in this industry so we're not running our server my any means. Because of our experience, we tip very well whenever we go out but this is the type of service that makes us not want to tip as well...We've had a couple of drinks and have waited over an hour now just to order our food- after having to wave down our server. Great for watching the game (Mexico vs Netherlands). A large bar and grill with looked to be 20 TVs. We drank Guinness, Murphy's, and Harp on draft. Mac's is definitely a bar and they do have food but this is a loud and rowdy drinking spot. I stopped in for a cold one and enjoyed their "beer special of the week (month?)" and it turned out to be one of my favorites, Franziskaner Hefeweisse and it was only $2.
