This is a beautiful classic looking Macys in the heart of downtown Chicago. Lots of floors with everything and anything that you could be looking for. One downside is that there is no dedicated parking structure/lot for customers. If you want to drive to this location, you will need to pay a steep price to park. The subsidized parking in the nearby structure is very expensive (only $2-$3 off from the regular downtown Chicago rate). Alternatively you could try to find street parking, however those spots are few and hard to come by in this area during prime hours. read more

First time in years that I have shopped at the Macys on State Street in Chicago and it will be my last. I purchased a rug in store and it is going to be shipped to me. They have the most antiquated system I've ever encountered. If you make an in store purchase you can't track the progress of your order online, even with the order number. You also can't get updated via the 800 number or online chats. You have to call the store directly and request updates until an actual shipping tracking number is available. Any and every store I've ever shopped at allows you to track from day of purchase through shipping. Very inconvenient and again so outdated. read more

What an embarrassment this store has become under the Macy's label. I cannot believe this used to be the renowned flagship Marshall Fields store. At the height of Holiday shopping season and we couldn't find any sales help or an open cashier station on the first floor except at the returns/refunds area that looked more like a grocery store self checkout. The clothes in the women's section were jumbled up all over each other. Buy the worst experience by far was the 7th floor women's bathroom that was so dirty and littered up it looked more like a bus station. Absolutely disgusting. All the flashy ornaments and lights in the world on the giant Xmas tree in The Walnut Room can't make up for the non-existent service help, the dirty bathroom & rumpled overfilled racks of clothing crammed into the aisles. At least the Frango mints were everywhere. Just no cashiers to take our money. read more

I am a loyal Macy's customer but have found that I have gone online than into their stores lately. Visiting Chicago, I thought I'd stop into this Macy's to see what's up. It was quiet in here for a Saturday but the place looked great and I saw several employees on the floor. When I asked one guy for directions, he practically took me there when I believe many would have just pointed in the right direction. This location is pretty big! read more

Macys has stepped up their game! 1) They've done numerous renovations and the store looks more modern without losing its authentic vintage feel. The old water fountains from the 1920's are still there even though they don't work they have a plaque in the wall explaining what they were. 2) They sold half the building and it was renovated into fancy office space. The office side looks elegant and modern. All of the updates make it feel like a good place to be. 3) They have hired better staff. They went out of their way to help me every time I had an issue. It wasn't pushy. It wasn't like a commission based thing, it all just felt like excellent customer service. 4) The deals are incredible these days. I'm not sure what changed. Macys use to be so over priced. I went in there and got a few pairs of pants, and a shirt for barely $80 after discounts. These are higher end well made clothes, so I'm very impressed. 5) They've increased security. More security tags, more security cameras, and guards. Decreased thefts = a safer place to shop for the rest of us. I heard about the smash and grabs and no one wants to shop near that madness so this level of security is needed. Macy's is responsible for a section of the Pedway that runs through their building. I walk the pedway at least once a day, if not 3 or 4 times a day. Macy's section is the only one that consistently has unhoused people in the middle of the walkway. At all hours of the day, in plain site from inside the store. It's clear that Macy's doesn't care if people pass out, urinate, or panhandle in the basement of their building. read more

This review is a few months overdue, but here goes. On 10/28/2021 I purchased a Beautyrest Black mattress at Macy's State Street, and I LOVE it! Majed, the salesperson, was very knowledgeable about every single mattress in the store. He took a great amount of time both to answer all of my questions and concerns, which I really appreciated. I had shopped around at other mattress specific stores, and they did not do this at those places. The free white glove delivery was exceptional as well. They were very accommodating on my day/time windows. They even have something where the morning of the delivery, you receive a text message with a link that shows a map of where the delivery truck is, and the ETA of when they will arrive at your home. These mattresses last for 10 years, but when it is time for a new one, I can tell you two things. a) I will 100% be purchasing it again from Macy's. b) I will 100% ONLY be asking for Majed as my salesperson. I have to admit a little resentment still bubbles up when I come in here, as I grew up with Marshall Field's and just cant/won't imagine anything else in the space. I do like how they go through SO much trouble to decorate for the holidays, Independence day and Spring. We had some time to kill before a movie at Siskel so we browsed the odd yet fascinating Journey to Paradoisis exhibit. We met on 7 without realizing you have to start the story on level 1! We just worked our way down and looked at the arrangements of clothes and flowers. There were some good deals there, with pleasant, non-pushy salespeople. There is also a wine shop that is part of the store next to the candy selection. The candy selections include individual and boxed chocolates, gummies, and unique selections such as Godiva where you can buy individual selected chocolates, boxed chocolates, gift sets, chocolate advent calendars, Godiva gourmet boxed assortment of classy French Cookies. The workers are friendly and care about actually having a conversation with each customer therefore, personalizing the shopping experience. I LOVE this Macy's location! Macy's State Street offers the elegance of days gone by through their gorgeous architecture. If you look as you walk around, you'll see marble drinking fountains, beautiful banisters, crown molding and the vintage clocks. I can just imagine the fancy ladies shopping and lunching back in the day. The sheer size is impressive. Floor after floor allows for a huge amount of inventory that is diverse. Whatever you are looking for, you'll find it here. I shopped for business clothes and found something in every color imaginable. All the sparkly clothes are out now to the holiday season. The Christmas section is stunning. I picked up some great cosmetics at the MAC counter and even bought a gift for a family member. Each staff member I encountered was amazing. They were super helpful, funny and kind spirited. I really appreciated that. Whenever I need or want to go to Macy's, I very much prefer this State Street location. Wander around. Take in all the beauty that is there. And purchase all the gorgeous things you'll find on the 7 or 8 floors. read more

I always find what I'm looking for and more. Just to stop in and borrows is my way of a treasure hunt..never know what you maybe lucky to find. Customer service was outstanding. I was immediately helped by the nicest gentleman in the fragrance department who knew his stuff! Based on what I told him I liked he found me an amazing YSL scent and they were also nice enough to wrap up the other fragrance set I bought as a holiday gift. I stopped in here to warm up during a long walk in the Loop last week, and to get some sense of socially distanced holiday normalcy. I appreciate the way they have preserved the old look of Marshall Field's. I agree with Rhonda F's review. The highlight for me however was the aftermath of a malfunction in the window decor, which looked like Christmas carnage--an elf felled by a karate chop from the big disappearing hand of Santa Claus. I'm posting photos here, but it's even scarier when the hand is moving behind the door. Maybe someone has noticed and fixed it by now. Either the window dressers have a sense of humor or the vibrations from traffic and the Red Line rumbling underneath are responsible. read more

I adore this location. it's been here for forever and is a Chicago historical landmark! It's a piece of Chicago, for sure. People come from all around to see the Christmas windows and decorations, and to have lunch or dinner in the Walnut Room next to the magnificent tree. It's just, SPECIAL. It's several stories tall, can't remember off-hand but maybe 7 or 8? There's more floors than that, but they've rented out the top couple to an office. This location has SO MUCH inventory. The selection is fabulous. Last time i was here, i spent nearly 90 minutes in the Handbags and had such a great time!! I was enjoying looking at all the bags and had interactions with like 2 or 3 different ladies working there that were all wonderful and enjoyed having fun with their customers!! We shopped in shoes.. shopped in men's.. walked around the Christmas department. they were all wonderful and had so much to look through! We had lunch in the Walnut room. I had surprised my Mother with reservations for her Birthday and we had such a fabulous experience! it was beyond beautiful, the princesses walking around were so sweet, and the food was REALLY GOOD. Highly recommended!! My only complaint here was that they weren't clearing plates quickly enough, at all. Macy's in general has great sales! You can even download an app that has a built-in scanner to find out the price. This is such a magnificent building and shop all around. I shop at every Macy's in ever city I visit. This one is hands down the worst! Absolutely no customers service, no employees available for each department. The luggage department has a sign, in the store the department register is closed! What in the world? The Starbucks employee told us we has to go to bedding to get someone for luggage! There wasn't anyone to unlock the luggage I needed so bad. No one answers the phone, hot mess. We ended up scanning all of our great finds and ordering them Online to send to the house. This store is a big maze of mediocrity! I stopped in recently because it was the only store open in the area and I needed a few last minute items before my trip the the next day. Needless to say, it was mostly a waste of time. WHERE ARE THE FASHIONS?? After circling the maze of the floors looking for the Contemporary department or anything "current" other than basic jeans, office-wear, misc. casual wear for mature women and evening wear for mothers of brides, I finally gave up! I don't know what happened to this store since Macy's took over, but I'm sure that Marshall Field's is rolling over in his grave! read more

The location is classic. It's an icon, even if it is no longer Field's. When it's Christmas, the place is gorgeous. The windows are decorated, there's decor inside. The whole bottom level of the store is filled with candy. It's the sort of department store you see in movies. But the staff is dreadful. They're pushy in some departments, hounding you about if they can help even if you politely say no. Then in other departments, they don't seem to care at all. Last visit, there were two (clearly intoxicated) parents with a gaggle of small children (I'd guess 8 and under). The kids were running around and manhandling ornaments. I wasn't so much worried about them breaking anything (since you break, you buy) but worried about them getting hurt from glass or a breaking display. The parents weren't paying attention, and instead were pressing every single button on those annoying dancing Christmas plush. They were dancing off the table and crashing to the floor, and a women used a Department 56 village display as a coat rest while she stopped. It was a disaster, and there were multiple Macy's workers nearby who just let it all happen. I understand it's not their job to babysit, but when merchandise is getting broken/crashing, I'm surprised no one stopped them. read more

Bottom Line: A huge department store but it's the history that makes this a worthwhile stop. I'm not a big shopper and not a huge Macy's fan, but I'm glad I stepped inside this eight-floor department store. I was casually looking for a pair of shoes in the sprawling ladies shoe department but it was really the history and architecture of this early 1900s building for my visit. The building was built for Marshall Fields which was a famous department store that was founded in Chicago even before that whole hot, fiery mess in the O'Leary's barn. This particular location was not established until seven decades later but I can only imagine how spectacular shoppers found this store to be in the Golden Age. The building has a neat old clock attached to the corner of the building that welcomes guests and that sets the stage for the wonderment that follows. Needless to say, they don't build department stores like this anymore! Original features are still in tact like the spindled staircase, water fountains and elevators. The eight stories of mezzanines alone are fascinating. As far as the shopping experience goes, this store is mostly like a typical Macy's but on steroids. They do have some unique features like a wedding shop and candy shop. The candy shop sells the famous Marshall Fields chocolates. The brands range from meh to nice and the service was lackluster. It's a really neat building but that doesn't necessarily mean the overall experience will be as impressive. read more

I am disgusted by the bathrooms every time I come to this store! The way this store is maintained shows the lack of respect that the store owners and management have for their own store and for the people who shop there. I had to take photos and share it with a store supervisor and her comments were that every store is like this. Excuse me, no young lady the 900 building, Nordstrom and Bloomingdales are NOTHING like this!! Only Macy's is like this and by the way about 10 years overdue for an upgrade. Additionally the service is very poor. I walked from department to department on the men's (2nd) floor looking for someone at a register to ring me up. Usually when I do find someone, they are very nice BUT this is high season for retail and this is 11 days before Christmas, plus it is the main Macy's in downtown Chicago. It's an awful representation of the brand to all the tourists who come into town to shop, I'm embarrassed for them. It is really poorly managed and the conditions of the clothing racks, floors that are cracking and crumbling and the restrooms are all a reflection of their "I don't care" attitude. read more

I really love this place, because it's located two blocks away from my home. I like to come here during cold weather and shop or just walk around and check some stuff. This Macy's is huge, 8 or 9 stories if I'm not mistaken. It has two Starbucks cafes inside, restaurant on the last floor, furniture department and many many floors with clothes. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars it's because it needs some upgrades, which indeed Macy's is doing, but not fast enough. First floor looks nice and upgraded, but the others ones not. They really need to replace those dirty carpets and fix fitting rooms (locks, doors, mirrors, clean up walls). If corporate will decide to invest some money in to this places I'm sure it will bring a lot of customers back, as the building with Tiffany ceiling is so so beautiful and attracts people and tourist from all over the world. read more

I really enjoy having this iconic location as my local Macy's. Yes, the store was better when it was Marshall Field's. Macy's sometimes doesn't compare favorably to that bastion of retail commerce. It's a real mix of high and low, and I find myself really checking for quality of fabrics, stitching, etc. when I shop here. I always check out the sales, and often get some great deals on end of season shoes and boots. Macy's does some deep discounts, but you really have to dig through a bit of a mess to find anything. Petites is also a mixed bag...good for dresses, not so much for pants and separates. Having said that, I often can find what I'm looking for when I shop here, so 4 stars is it. The building itself is a big part of the draw; they just don't make department stores that look like this anymore. It has the same vibe as Macy's Herald Square in midtown Manhattan. Service has always been helpful, but sometimes you do have to go looking for a sales associate. Sometimes I wish they'd pull some of those perfume spraying people off the first floor and spread them around the store more. read more

Had a wonderful experience at Macy's. Went with my son to get some dress clothes and suit. The service was excellent. She was attentive and informative making it quite easy to make decisions. They had a sale going on and received some very nice discounts. Also went to the shoe department and enjoyed the same level of service. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE - EVER Someone opened an account using my telephone number. I called "customer service". All of the customer service numbers require you to have an account. I don't have one. I finally found a way to get to a live person. She said the fraud department would send me a letter in 7 days. After I hung up, I realized she didn't ask for my address. I tried calling back and once again got caught up in the neverending circle of we need your account number. Tried to find a corporate number to register a complaint...no luck. Obviously, Macy's doesn't care about customer service. Wish I could have awarded a big fat zero on stars. read more
