For those who remember, this location used to be a Bullock's. Built in 1947 this late modern style building was remarkable. Architects Wurdeman & Becket collaborated with interior designer Raymond C Dexter to create sixty-one discrete departments inside. Each with its own distinct finishes and architectural style. Due to its uniqueness, it is now listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Macy's was founded in 1858 and established itself as the Great American Department Store. Unfortunately, consumer shift to online shopping has contributed to the demise of department stores and there are only a handful of Macy's left. This is one of them and most likely the most extravagant. In addition to shoes, clothing, beauty, & accessories this store also carries housewares gifts & furniture. I admit, I'm part of the 70% who prefer online shopping. However, I've been to this location a few times. It's actually quite cool with multiple levels to explore. While my girls go shopping for their things I like to browse through the men's clothing section to see what deals they might have. While I don't regularly buy clothes anymore, I appreciate how neatly organized the store is. Even coming by during the holiday season (the last week before Christmas), it was rather empty. This is, by far the most elaborately decorated Macy's I've ever been to. Nearly every wall featured antique mirrors, East Asian paintings and prints as well as some truly inexplicable objets d'art. Anyway, this is a pretty basic layout for a Macy's, with a clearly divided men and women's section. Despite the interesting decor, the selection was typical for the chain. However, on the second floor (third technically, as you have to go up a flight of stairs to enter the building), there's a discount floor with everything from clothes to furniture, linens, body products and more. Definitely worth while to take a look. I'll say this much, of the Macy's I've been to, this is definitely a nicer one. And the staff were friendly and helpful. read more

I never went here as a kid, but this place reminds me of my youth. My mom was nutso for the Bullock's in Westwood, which had a similar look. I didn't much care for shopping for clothes as a wee boy, but I could get into the magical floor patterns and sexy antique elevators, which you can still find at this Macy's in Pasadena, which is a former Bullock's. The Bullock's my mom was crazy about was turned into a Target and nothing really remains. But this department store still has kept a few touches. The barber shop upstairs has been preserved as an odd one-room museum behind glass. But wandering the store, you will find little bits of history all over. read more

I love historical Macy's don't get me wrong but this particular Macy's on lake Avenue in Pasadena always seems to be short-staffed. I'm in line for an order pickup right before Thanksgiving of course and there's two lines for returns and online pickups somehow they ignored the online pickup which is just scanning a barcode and I actually had to say something to get someone's attention to say I was waiting before the two customers they're calling before me. It's Thanksgiving I don't know if Macy's aka Thanksgiving Day parade Macy's has to be reminded that it's a busy time the week before Thanksgiving and the following weeks to come to Christmas. read more

My wife and I stopped by this Macy so she could return an item here. We were already in the area so that's why we came to this one. We parked on the roof of the parking structure since all the other parking spots in the garage were taken. So we entered through the top level and had to go down to the lower level to return the item. This Macy is very nice, I think it's the nicest Macy I been to just because of the way they decorate inside. You feel like you're in a high value store based alone on how they display their items. This will forever be Bullock's Pasadena to me. It is a Historic Landmark in the city the artwork and architecture is amazing. While operating as a Macy's it is better in service and cleanliness than most. The staff I have encountered seam to enjoy working there . The selection of goods on offer is also better than many locations. Prices are usually the same as in neighboring stores . Parking is available in structures and lots with numerous entrances preventing bottlenecks . The layout is unique and the departments are treated to their own unique rooms. Chandeliers, wall hanging, woodwork, fireplaces. A children's hair salon ( now display only) and more don't just shop here explore and enjoy the beauty of Bullocks Pasadena. read more

To be honest, this macy's is not that bad. You can test the perfumes and stuff and this store is reall big, but the price can be high sometimes. They even have a toy r'us connected to the macy's! In the toys r'us, they have many selection of toys and games to play. Im reviewing on macy's tho. On the third floor, they have a ton of chairs that you can sit on and thats where the kids clothing is. The overall service is pretty good and there are some workers around but not much. But the store itself can be a little pricey so you should probably find a cheaper store before going here. read more

Appalled by my first online order pick up experience. The line was nonexistent but the lady ahead of me had a lot of issues to go through so it took awhile. Finally it was my turn, and I'm simply just picking up one item thinking Pasadena is a good location, must be great service etc. Clerk went to pick up a busted Amazon looking box and asked if I want to examine the goods, I said yes, she opens it and the lunar new year limited edition item's box was also busted... she acted like this was normal and I was suppose to be happy getting the item. I had to ask what other options do I have because this is a gift, can't give someone a busted looking box. She seemed really annoyed that I was complaining. Gave me an attitude the entire time afterwards and in the end said "you can just return it and go up stairs and buy it again"... do you even have the item? "I have to check it in the system" Sounds like a lot of work and I'm asking for too much ... What exactly happened with the delivery?! It's probably not macys fault but her reaction makes me think this happens all the time. Someone who works there needs to look into this. read more

Giving this old school now retro department store 5 stars for maintaining so much of it original style. So few stores exist that have 3 levels and a barber shop inside and about 4 different ladies and men's departments. Back in the day Lake street used to be the street for shopping. Sadly it has faded overall as Colorado Blvd or South Pasadena are the hipster places to be. Putting a Ross across the street and. Ghetto purple Planet Fitness next door doesn't help. The store is a flashback and I hope Macys is able to keep it going. Was super slow when I was in the in a Sunday at noon. Wish it were still called Bullocks. read more

FURNITURE DEPT REVIEW This Macys is a stand alone and one of the largest furniture department Macys. I went looking for a sofa set during one of their sales and found a beautiful, comfy living room set for a HUGE DISCOUNT! Pros: - good selection of living room, bedroom and patio furniture - sale prices are excellent. I would never pay full price again - very spacious and not crowded, my 2 year old ran around the whole time safely - worrynomore insurance program - easy ample parking lot. Next to Marshalls also a plus - Tim the salesman was very patient and helpful in my search for my sofa. Thanks Tim we LOVE our sofa!!! Cons: - no clearance room like other Macys I highly recommend getting the worrynomore insurance. It's a 5-year warranty to fix or replace your item for free. If you don't use it after 5 years you can put the money for a new item! read more

This is one of the more vintage-style Macy's out there. Def harkens back to the days when going shopping was an event. We were in the area so decided to stop in as it has been some time since we lasted visited. You can feel the history of the building as soon as you enter...the wood details, murals, art work, the sturdy staircase and attention to detail. If walls could talk! I would say this location caters to the local crowd. They do have a great basement for housewares and other domestic items...and also a Toys-R-Us! I love this location. It's the closest one to me and always super festive. Their Toys R Us revival melts my heart. What a nostalgic come back. I love this location even more during this season. Well, this is really my first time back actively shopping for my once regular essentials. This morning, I had a dentist appointment for cleaning across the street at premier care dental and once I left, I opted to venture across the street to visit some of my favorite haunts. I began with ORVIS, and I did find a few treasures... I found a couple of driving caps or Gatsby caps (Barbour wool and a waxed cloth) as I ventured deeper into ORVIS. I discovered a beanie of sorts... multi colored striped beanie... think of it as a nod to Missoni or Coogie ? It was literally amazing! Next, I migrate towards Macy's so down Lake I go... it's been literally months since I've been inside and in all sincerity... I didn't recognize my Macy. This was by no means the once iconic Bullocks that my grandmother would bring my mother and my siblings and myself for those things that used to fill you with wonder when you were little. I still have found memories of my grandmother bringing me for shoes or new pj's, and I still recall grabbing a bite upstairs in the dining room. South Lake was something! Actually, Pasadena was something truly special. My grandmother would have a routine... I. magnum which was just right across the Cellor parking is a destination that my grandmother would make for statement shoes and bags and gorgeous suits and dresses and then we'd head up Hudson and pull into the parking where Chase bank stands today and grab a delicious meal at Beatles and then I remember crossing the street to J.W. Robinson, where Target stands today. But I digress ... lol, just a bit. I enter Macy's, and I'm taking a back... am I in my Macy's, or did I wander into Marshall or T.J. Max? I see racks of items that we all have made comments about in relation to mall Macy's. Where are my sales people that I had known forever, and who knew my mother and grandmother? I navigate deeper into men expecting to find suits or dress shirts and dress socks or ties? THIS IS NOT THE STANDARD OF DRESS THAT I HAVE BEEN RAISED TO PROJECT OR EVOKE. I'm literally in disbelief. I enter the area adjacent to the Polo shop, but I see nothing familiar in this area either. Where the heck is the dignity or character? Am I now inside a Burlington? Or a C grade mall department store? I head up to the 3rd floor to see if I can find something for the niece's and nephew's. But.... what the heck happened? I remember going to a swap meet when I was little with my cousin, and this evoked that very same esthetic! I was suddenly struck with sadness. My mom used to love this store, and my grandmother wouldn't shop anywhere else. So sad. To add insult to injury, after my mother's massive stroke and subsequent recovery I made it a routine to bring her to Macy's almost every other week to remind her of her of the very things she would enjoy. Finding items for herself and her grandkids! Plus, to re-engage with sales staff that she knew and was always helpful in finding or acquiring beautiful things. My mom was filled with confidence in the simple things like visiting Anie in women or her salesperson in lingerie her at Macy's ..... and her regular sales person at Nordstrom to encourage her in therapy of sorts utilizing her hemi walker for longer durations. My mother and certainly my grandmother would flee this bargain basement of sorts immediately if they were still here today. The department in which I would wander through in search of a new suit or silk blouse for my grandmother is now the refuse that one would find at the end of a sales rack that most wouldn't have any desire to bring back home. I still have memories of walking into these departments and hearing my name or my grandmother's name along with a greeting. Gone are the days in which Lake Street was celebrated and portrayed in those television shows and featured films that presented the lifestyle that most knew. So sad... Grrr cancer! read more

Came here the other day to buy some winter boots since a sale was going on. I mistakenly thought the Ugg boots I wanted were on sale and when I approached the sales women to ask if this was the case. She told me "those are UGGs, they are another brand.." (chuckled) then proceeded to say "if they were, I would be buying them" in snooty tone I didn't appreciate. She did not have the kind of customer service that you would expect and I was observing her helping others as I got someone else to help me. She was having a challenging time with others. The 3 star is given for the overall experience The one that ended up helping me with my purchase, I got boots that I love and she was very kind and gave a boost to this rating Unfortunately, the Macy as a whole is catering to a older clientele. This is the best and only Macy's I go to. Literally it should be a model store for the entire chain because it's just different! The best stuff, nicely merchandised, great prices. I'm not even the "typical Macy's customer" but find myself going to this location many times a year! I even got all my wedding pictures frames from here and other nicer gifting items. Just tried their online order / in-store pickup feature today for their Black Friday Sale, and it couldn't have been easier!!!!!!!!!!! Super efficient and tons of options for what I was looking for (more kitchen and houseware stuff). Keep being awesome and other locations take note! Thank you!!!!! read more

I love this location in Pasadena. There's ample parking and I love how there's never a crowd, even during the holidays! I came in to do a return in the men's section and it took me less than 5 minutes. Staff were super friendly and knowledgeable! I find that macys has some of the best deals during the holidays, but their in store selection is limited. I prefer ordering online for the selection then returning at this location if the items don't work out. High recommend! read more

I came here to return some shoes that I purchased online. I usually go to Santa Anita but decided on the South Lake location because I hadn't been in years. I walked in and everything seemed to be just how it has been for years which is not a bad thing. Unfortunately for Macy's but fortunate for me, I really didn't look around. I asked a sales rep where shoes were because I forgot and was given directions. Very surprised with the shoe department as it was lacking in my opinion compared to another Macy's. I stood in the one line that they had where they were accommodating those who wanted to pay/exchange/request a shoe size. I am not sure why someone had to stand in line to request a shoe size as that meant the person at the register had to leave the register to go look for shoes. The process was horrible and took longer than it should have. Once I was up to do my return, the process was smooth and quick. I will return one day to take a look around the store as stated above, I was in and out. read more

It has been a sad 10 years for the Department Store as i remember it. May Co. is gone. Buffums is gone. The Broadway is gone. A personal favorite, Bullocks is gone as well. And on and on. Nordstrom is still here though diminished from its hey day about 15 years ago: as is Neiman Marcus and of course Macy's which was not a So/Cal fixture as it is now: being pretty much the only game in town. In fact this Macy's is in the spot on Lake in which Bullock's Pasadena resided. I remember having to wear a coat and tie and my Mother's very high heels, dress, hat and gloves as we came here to shop for my going back to school clothes. Well, Bullock's and Bullock's Wilshire (an Art Deco Masterpiece) which now sits smack dab in what is now Koreatown and now inhabited by Southwest Law School which saved it from demolition. So i came here looking for a gift for a friend and maybe a couple summer weight sports coats for myself. For those of you too young to remember : there used to be salespeople who were on commision and who were honor and financially bound to help you find whatever it is you needed. Now, of course you find what you need and take it for trying on and then to a Central desk to be rung up. The Glamour is gone. The Specialness is gone. The Dining room in which the Moms and I would sit at a table and have a real waitress or waiter bring us food and drink is closed off on the 2nd floor of this store. For a 12 year old like me it was like being in a very special place. And i had to be on my best behavior and not complain about the tie (which i never wore) that itched. In any event the ladies who were working in the Men's department today are nice and helpful and personable so i can't really complain about the service. Plus the pricing is really good for what you get. And believe me i looked carefully at the garments that i bought: stitching, interior and exterior seams, etc. As BB King sings: the Thrill is Gone in most Department Stores as they exist today. It's sad really. But nonetheless: i found what i wanted at a terrific price. Cheers! read more
