I'd been considering trying Mad One Jack's for a while now as I moved to Hoboken 2 years ago but have continued going to my ridiculously over-priced salon in Manhattan that whole time. I'd been to the same salon for over 8 years with the same colorist and a couple different stylists for cut. I was VERY nervous about the switch so kept putting it off. I finally decided to just go for it and, after a bit of online research, booked with Rowena. She was, in a word, amazing. Soooo patient and attentive. She listened to everything I said - including all my fears about trying a new place - and even recapped a few times as the appt went on. I came out LOVING my cut and color. It's now a week later and I'm still thrilled with it. (I used to have to go back to my other place to get "fixes" a day or two after I was there.) My boyfriend even gave me the perfect compliment when I got home from the appointment: "You look good. It looks just like it does when you go to the other place." I am 100% converted to a Mad One Jack's (and Rowena!) devotee. So happy to have a great local salon now in the town I love! read more

This was my first time here as I wanted to go to a salon closer to home. I actually chose this salon based on the yelp reviews and I am glad I did. The salon is uniquely decorated which makes it stand apart right away. I was scheduled with Yanni and she was fantastic and very sweet. She gave me a great consultation and some pointers. She sent me off to get washed and hands down one of the best washes I've had in a very long time. The hot towel and massage was well worth it. I would go there for just that part alone. Yanni gave me a great cut and was very helpful with tips on how to blow dry my hair and style it. I have already made my next appointment and will update this review if necessary. read more

I went to another salon in Hoboken a few days ago and left with a bad haircut (see previous review). Decided to go to Mad One Jacks to get it fixed. I am SO glad I did! This is my favorite haircut ever, and my visit was one of the best salon experiences I've ever had. The staff were super accommodating, friendly, understanding, and most importantly, down to give me the specific cut I was asking for. I have a pretty unique style, and so I came prepared with several images depicting the look I was going for. My stylist Brittni took great care to understand what I wanted, how I wanted it, and made sure to do EXACTLY that. I really appreciated her attention to detail and receptiveness. My favorite part was when she warned me that the look I wanted was "kind of dated," just to be sure I knew what I was doing. I was like "I don't care at all, please just do it just like the picture," to which she laughed, said "awesome," and gave me the bombest 'do ever. She was also just a cool person, and it was fun talking to her. The other employees I met were pretty damn great as well. All of them were very friendly and accommodating. They gave me a same-day appointment, a nice head massage, AND a little gift baggie on the way out, with some styling products to use on my own. They even offered me a glass of wine, which I will take them up on next time around. The haircut was reasonably priced for a high-end place. Thanks Mad One Jacks! Since moving to this area 4 months ago I've tried 3 different salons and been disappointed with each one. I read the reviews for Mad One Jacks after being referred there by a friend and immediately made an appointment. The receptionist was incredibly friendly; I was greeted as soon as I walked in, she took my coat and offered me something to drink. The salon was clean, everyone was very nice and welcoming. They were very punctual, I was actually taken early for my appointment! Kristi did my color and highlights and Princessa did my cut, both of them were AMAZING!! For the first time in years I walked out of a salon and there was not one thing I wanted to change about my hair. I had consultations with both of them before anything was done and Kristi even broke down the cost of everything I asked for before she did anything so there were no surprises when I checked out. I could not be happier with the results I got and I will definitely be going back!!! read more

Worst service i have ever received! I walked in for my appointment and asked if they had a place to hang my jacket, they said they would take in a minute. 30 minutes later no one took my jacket or told me that Jack was running late for my appointment. I finally saw Jack and he was on his phone looking at pictures. I asked him if he was still going to cut my hair since it was 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment, he ignored me and didn't answer. 5 minutes later he came over to me and brought me to his chair. I nicely said wow it was quite a long wait, is there a reason why you ignored me? Jack then said he wouldn't cut my hair I should leave! I had been going to Jack for many years, this is NOT the way you treat a client. I do not recommend anyone to go here! read more

Have gone to Mad One for many years. Been thru 2 stylists who I liked but moved on to different careers and a colorist who also left the biz. On 2 other occasions I tried other stylists there for cuts. Both times they were terrible cuts. I was put off by the service charge added for using credit cards. They say it is "customary these days to offset their expense of using the cards". This is not a gas station. If you want to offset the cost it would be a better image to raise your prices by $5 and not Nickel and dime the customers. I can't recommend this salon any longer. Moving on. read more

After reading all the reviews I scheduled a same-day appointment, on a Saturday, with Jack the Salon owner. I was surprised they had any openings - might have been the first indication. I won't write a very lengthy review. I will say this - it was one of the worse haircuts I've had in ages. If you're used to high end NYC or hairdressers in Europe, this salon does not stack up. I shouldn't speak about the salon in general - I only had an experience with Jack. I agree that everyone was very friendly but the cut was terrible. Once Jack and his assistant both started blow-drying my hair straight with paddle brushes, I knew I was in trouble. I had to come home and style my own hair, to get rid of the frizz, only to realize the layers were incredibly uneven and it was just a bad cut overall. Still growing it out after months to go back to Sally Hershberger salon in the city - REALLY pricey but when I walk out of there I am delighted not miserable! read more

I know it says it's not good for kids, but I disagree. Our 2.5 year old son has gotten his hair cut here several times. Jack is amazingly fast and does a great job each time. He also uses scissors which is great for kids since razors can be a little scary. read more

I am so glad that my Yelp search led me here. I had an appointment with Princessa for a much needed haircut. I actually showed up a few minutes early, but I was taken care of almost immediately nonetheless. Princessa asked a few questions about what sort of cut I was looking for and the amount of daily styling and maintenance that I do, and within the hour, I got exactly what I asked for. She couldn't possibly have done a better job. The salon was clean, the staff friendly and professional. I found the product suggestions to be helpful rather than pushy and credit card payment was very convenient. Overall, this was a great experience and I fully intend to be a loyal customer. read more

Went her after a year of looking for a great hair place. Disappointed again. Parking is difficult. The seating area being full of kids also want the best start to my experience either. While getting my cut , my stylist left 5 times to go check on the color of another client. When I asked to have more length I was told no as my hair wouldn't lay right if she did that. Fair enough, it is your profession but please keep on mind professionalism. I would prefer a place where my appointment is just for me. I won't be back. Not for this cut at that price. read more

i love this salon for all of the same reasons everyone else already mentioned (dog-friendly, wine, flexible hours, friendly service, head massage). i used to see yanni but after she moved away i tried a new stylist and she gave me a pretty terrible haircut. to be fair i didn't complain or go back in to fix it because it was something that needed to grow out and i was afraid if they did more cutting it would only make it worse. there are so many other salons in hoboken i'd rather get it right next time on the first try. read more

So let me start off by saying this salon has the worst, creepiest, money hungry owner I have ever met. I have been going there for quite some time now and never did I have to deal with Jack (the owner). Unfortunately, my stylist wasn't available so I had no choice but to book it with him. I have never heard my hair sizzle, the sizzling was because this man used the flat iron on my hair while it was still wet. When I tell you my heart dropped so fast I yelled, he says "oops, I had to dry it first" right there I should have just gotten up and ran out the door. However, I didn't because I desperately need my hair to get done. I also needed a haircut and at this point I was extremely scared but i continued to sit there (yes, I'm nuts to sit there). As this man is cutting my hair I noticed that he was squinting like if he could not see what he was cutting. I was wondering how the hell is this man doing hair without any glasses. Finally, I'm done with the service and I go to the front desk to pay for the services and he follows right behind me. He places the ticket on the desk and again squinting to read my name (which confirmed what I was thinking) then he kept repeating himself asking me the same question 3x's in a roll (Can I help you out with anything from our store). I looked at him like if there was something wrong with him because I said "No, I'm ok" 3x's. As the receptionist is ringing me up she gave me my total. I said to her "my total is what?" Then she stated that he charged for a extra bottle of solution 2x's, my stylist has never ever used more than one bottle on my hair and this guy charges me extra. Mind you my hair is up to the middle of my neck. I was completely taken back by this. Then I told him my stylist never used more than she had to and his nasty response well I'm not that person everyone has their way of doing the Lasio. Then he stood near which I can feel him staring and I honestly believe he was waiting for a tip. Here's a tip for you Jack STOP RIPPING PEOPLE OFF AND LEARN HOW TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE!!! Also, GO GET GLASSES IF YOUR GOING TO CONTINUE TO DO HAIR!!! Which by the way you should retire from it... Its sad because the women that work there are amazing. read more

I have very fine hair- usually just worn in longer layers... not a tough/technical cut by any means. Liked being greeted with a glass of wine after work- and ended up I *needed* that drink! :( Stylist was nice enough, but was distracted the entire time, and kept trying to hard-sell me their products. He seemed to have his own agenda with my hair, and I ended up with a horrible cut that seemed to *add* frizz and was tough to rescue on a daily basis. Thank goodness I am traveling back to my usual stylist in the near future on business...hopefully she can save my hair! read more

This place is amazing! I found it on yelp after a different salon screwed up my appointment time and I'm so glad that this place came along. Thank you SO MUCH DOROTA! She was so nice and polite! She listens very well and I love my hair! I'm not a very talkative person so I love that she didn't pressure me into a conversation. I also got a postcard from her thanking me! Have been going here for over a year now. While I have seen a bunch of different stylists, I have stuck with Sarah lately. Sarah is efficient, personable and all around a good person. We have finally found a toner and color I am in love with. Sarah's precision with placing hilites is out of this world, very detailed and perfectionist. Yanni was great! Pricey, but extremely professional with a keen attention to detail. For men, the ability to come back in between haircuts for a free clean-up really helps. I enjoyed a mid-afternoon Rolling Rock which was greatly appreciated. I would give it 5 stars if we could get the cost down a little bit, but I guess the market dictates price. read more

Well I have been going to Mad One jacks for a year now since my first experience and I felt an update was in order. No doubt my first experience with Stephanie was amazing! But with time I found myself longing for that experience (have changed stylists since Stephanie was on long maternity leave; maybe that's the problem) :( I never got the lovely shoulder massage ever again.. looks like it was only to impress a first-time client! I never got the same treatment. Some of the girls who wash my hair chat a little but mostly I am left sitting in my chair bored out of my wits. The service is good.. don't get me wrong! But it is definitely not worth the $$$ I pay!! Every haircut I've had is about a $100 including tip. I feel I can get a lot better for that price. Also this time i wanted to do the PM shine to give my dark brown-bordering-black hair a little shine and some chestnut shade. But the stylist recommended a darker chocolaty brown. I insisted I wanted something different but she said I'd see the color in the sun and went ahead with her plan. I paid a good $80 for that too. About $180 later, I looked the way I had when I had walked in! No dramatic change no makeover... no change at all! I really wanted something different. One good thing was that the color was not damaging and didn't leave any brassy tones, which I had wanted. But I wouldn't pay that much money and get nothing! So they're good if you have pots of gold to throw away. But if you're looking for value for money this ain't the place! read more

Great atmosphere - young, "hip," fun... I've gone to Yani for my haircuts before and she's always good at doing exactly what I want. No arguing, no pressure - and are open late on a lot of days. AND they'll cut your bangs for free once after a haircut. I've been able to just walk in and get them trimmed. Amazing. Definitely will be going again. read more

My hair is straight and fine, but I've referred friends and family with all types and lengths of hair, and they all have similar experiences. Book early if you have a date/time in mind. Came in to get my eyebrows done as a first time client with high expectations based on yelp reviews. The woman made multiple comments about how thin the edges of my eyebrows were and kept asking how I managed to get them like that (it's how they've always been - usually I pencil them in but didn't as I was going for a wax), which I found to be very rude. I asked her to clean them up and make my arch a bit more prominent, and I am not happy with the results. My eyebrows are uneven, shapeless, and spaced much too far apart, and to top it off I have a painful swollen bump forming just below my left eyebrow. I am now spending my day going to Sephora to purchase products to fill my eyebrows until they grow back, as I look ridiculous after leaving here. read more

Love this salon! I've been in a few times to get my hair cut and it always grows out nicely and remains healthy looking. During my past visit, I tried out the whole PM Shines thing to even out my color and cover some grays. It looks great! Agata is my stylist and she helped me pick out the color and was super attentive during the whole process (especially since she knew it was my first experience with color - semi permanent or not! The blowout lasted for a good two days before getting oily. I purchased some color-safe products which were not too expensive (like $10 each). Long story short, I always have a great experience at Mad One Jacks and Agata is very cool and does a great job on my hair every time! read more

I had my hair cut here three times now. The first time was with Tiffani and it was great, although it didn't grow out well. I have very thick curly hair. I went back to her for a trim and went home with my hair still lifeless and damaged. I used to think that it's hard to mess up my hair because it's so curly and thick, it's hard to tell when it's uneven....but even though I told her to take more off the weight, she didn't. I then went and some girl tried to fix it. I've been trying to grow it out since and it's very uneven and unmanageable. I'm so disappointed. I sent my mom there before my latest fiasco there and they also messed up her hair. First, some new girl started cutting her hair and made it very uneven. Then Jack tried to fix it for her and now she's trying to grow hers out now too. I feel like my first great experience with Tiffani misled me into believing I could get a great hair cut here but it simply wasn't the case. Don't bother. read more

I have been to Mad One Jacks several times and recieved hair cuts I was very happy with. I usually get a wash, cut and blow out which is pretty standard, though I do have one problem with the blowdry. I have very thick hair and everytime they dry my hair they have two people do it at once. While this seems efficient its actually super irritating. Not only do I have a loud blow dryer in each ear but my head is being tugged in two different directions. It also adds money to my tab because then I feel inclined to give extra tip to the extra stylist working on my hair. I have been to many other NJ salons and nobody ever had an issue blowdrying my hair solo. I like the end result I recieve at this salon but the actual experience could be better. read more

I've been going here for almost 10 years and always had great results, but this past year has been the worst!! Their front desk staff needs training and a better handle on customer service. When their location by the PATH closed, I wasn't notified that my appointment would change to the Madison St location and that the hair stylist would no longer be working on that day. Apparently, their system didn't recognize me since I had booked my appt so far in advance that it deleted me when they closed the PATH location. I rescheduled and it worked out with a new stylist. I book my appt again in advance before I leave. 12 weeks later, I arrive for my appt and somehow I'm deleted again!!! At this point there is no 3 strikes and you're out! I'm done with this place! Get a better handle on your scheduling system and the person scheduling it! This place is also way overpriced but I always overlooked it since I was happy here. Not anymore!!!! Two friends of mine have been going to MOJ for a couple years. They both saw Michael who they absolutely loved, so are quite disappointed he left. I just moved to Hoboken and was looking to get my hair trimmed. Based on my friends' reviews I decided to try MOJ. Now I'm wishing I never went here in the first place, and my friends feel bad for recommending it to me. I'll also add that this is my first yelp review. After reading all the great reviews about MOJ, I'm even more disappointed about my bad experience. I saw a junior stylist almost 3 weeks ago (I won't mention her name because I'm not writing this review to be malicious). The stylist and I talked about my hair and what I came in for. I was clear about what I wanted. I really liked my long hair and the layers that were there. I was simply coming in for a trim to clean up the ends, as I had just gotten my hair cut less than 2 months prior. She proceeded to trim my hair and then said she would texturize it, so that it would "flow better". I've had my hair thinned or texturized before because it's quite thick. My hair is also curly so it's nice to take out some of the weight and give the curls more bounce. However, I've NEVER had my hair texturized the way she did. She cut out big, long chunks of my hair. By the time I saw all the hair on the floor it was too late. I was really horrified, but didn't say anything. I wanted to trust her judgment, and hoped that the end result would be OK. In the end I left the salon feeling unhappy about my hair cut. She took off more length than I asked for and my hair felt really thin. Over the next couple of days I noticed that when she "texturized" my hair she had basically taken out huge chucks of my longest layer, leaving me with a thin rat tail like thing protruding out from the rest of my hair. Friends of mine made comments, so it wasn't just me being overly critical. They all suggested that I go back to the salon and have it fixed. Mind you I tried wearing my hair straight, curly, up, down, any sort of style to see if I could make the cut work. It just looked downright awful. So I went in this week, explained that I had my hair cut and was really unhappy with how it turned out. I came in to have the scraggly layer of hair that remained from "texturizing" cut off. To MOJ's credit, they were apologetic and accommodating. Another stylist came out to see what was wrong and fix it. I remember her saying, "I'm really sorry you had to come back in. Stylist X is a junior stylist so...". She also said it looked like I had a bit of a tail coming out of my head, so it wasn't just me. I'm sorry but I don't think the fact that it was a junior stylist is any excuse for what happened. I moved back to the US from Australia and have been traveling around. I've been to 6 different stylists in the past year and a half, all of them junior stylists, including an Aveeda Institute where they're still learning how to cut hair! I've never had a haircut that I was unhappy with, and I've certainly never had to return to the salon to have it fixed. I came in for a very simple trim and now I've lost 5 inches of my hair. That's the most upsetting part as I've been growing it out for the past year and a half and that can't be fixed. I've also lost all the layers that were in my hair and am stuck with a blunt, no layer cut, which doesn't work with curly hair at all. Overall, I'm quite upset about losing my long hair and very unhappy with my cut. They said I could come back in if I wanted it fixed further, but I'm too scared to go back in there. Looks like I'm stuck with what I've got until my hair grows out a little and I work up the nerve to go back to a DIFFERENT salon. My two friends won't be returning here to find a new stylist either. I'm sure you can come to MOJ and get a great cut, I just hope none of you have the same bad luck I did. read more
