4/10/22 evening a male staff member called a young woman a bitch, grabbed her by the back of the shirt, and violently shoved her into the stairwell because she was not moving fast enough. She was obviously very upset by this, as were a number of people who witnessed it. In general, shocked by how unfriendly and borderline violent staff and patrons alike were. Places like this should not be allowed to exist. The one quality thing about this bar was the woman and her band on the first floor... I've forgotten their name but she was funky as hell and excellent. read more

It's an institution in Adam's Morgan, but definitely not my vibe. Just too crowded and rowdy, with fairly undifferentiated cocktails and lackluster beer selection. I prefer the whiskey selection at Jack Rose or Dram & Grain down 18th. read more

I don't give 5 stars often, but Madam's Organ has earned it! Make sure to stop in when you're painting the town red in Adam's Morgan. I've been there for both happy hour and the late night turnup, both settings are winners. Let's talk happy hour -- rail drinks are $4-$5 until 7pm and are well made. They have appetizers but they're not on the happy hour specials menu. The bar service is always great -- bartenders are friendly, quick, and attentive. There are four bars on the three-ish different levels of spot, each one has its own vibe if you ask me. The downstairs is usually the most crowded and has a typical bar feel. The middle floor has a great pool hall vibe -- there's a small bar, a pool table, and lounge chairs. There is a third floor that feels like a swanky lounge -- fireplace, a more grown feeling bar. And there's a rooftop!! Make sure to visit the rooftop, there's heaters up there in the winter and fans in the summer so it's comfortable all year round. At night, they charge $5 cover for folks for enter (after 10pm I think). Although most bars don't charge cover on that street, I'd say this $5 is worth it. They have a live band on the first floor usually playing blues or jazz music. A DJ spins on the second floor, which makes it a great dance spot. The night crowd is lively and fun -- highly recommend. Overall, Madam's Organ is a must try. Inexpensive, quality drinks + music and merriment, how could you go wrong? read more

First of all, I'm not from Orange-somewhere-or-another, Baltimore, but DC. THIS GREAT PLACE, Madam's Organ is my favorite watering hole (or rather, WAS my favorite watering hole, until Docs took me off the booze) and the place is a wonderful spot to meet people. 3/18/23 - Bald bartender with beard on roof - me and my two friends made our way to roof. I asked bartender for two shots of RAIL tequila. He gave me my two shots and I payed my tab. After not tipping him for pouring TWO shots of RAIL tequila, he came up to me, in front of my friends, and asked me if I was going to tip him in cash. I declined and he proceeded to try and humiliate me in front of the bar. He tried to explain why he deserved a tip to someone who has bartended for over 1.5 YEARS in a busy DC bar. It was TWO SHOTS OF RAIL TEQUILA - that's it - maybe, being generous, 20 seconds of work to pour a single liquid into two cups. I have NEVER confronted a customer for not tipping. I very much welcome a supervisor to reach out to me to discuss this matter further because this was totally unacceptable. I WILL be telling people not to come here. read more

I have never had issues with this establishment before and am generally pleased with the service. However, I extremely dissatisfied by the service of tonights staff who refused to return my property as I have followed up with their team regarding it. The bartender is extremely rude and needs to be better educated on customer service. I expect better moving forward. read more

Soooo glad we stumbled upon this little gem while visiting DC. We actually stopped by on Thanksgiving because it was one of the only places open. They had live music, the sax player was great and our server was super friendly. Apparently there's a few levels of bars which is cool. That night they were offering Turkey and 3 sides as the only Menu option but it was delicious! It was only $9 and it turned out to be the perfect Thanksgiving dinner. I would love to come back here to try other foods. They have such a chill vibe here and the drinks are cheap!!!! read more

Once upon a time, I would have easily given this 5 stars. Because once upon a time, way back when I was a younger version of myself, this was my spot. Way back when the door dudes would waive the cover charge if you asked nicely and batted your eyes. Way back when redheads got $2 Rolling Rocks. Way back when I could brave the crowd. Way back when you could get kicked out for... Well, never mind, that's a whole other story. But to sum up, I was all about Madam's Organ like a decade ago. Fast forward to present day, and I have found that I still enjoy Madam's Organ on occasion. They may have gotten rid of the redhead special of cheap beer (or so said the bartender on my last visit), but they still have a diverse crowd and good live music. If you like a dive-y atmosphere in a place that isn't overrun with just college kids, interns, and recent grads (which can be difficult to find in Adams Morgan on a weekend night), this is a good spot for you. There are multiple levels. From live music on one, to pool another, to a lounge-y chill spot on another, to a rooftop. It's got a little something for just about everyone. Personally, I tend to stick to the first floor where the live music is or the rooftop. Hint: The bathrooms on the pool level tend to always be less crowded and in better condition than the first floor. Note: The stairs can be tricky to navigate (as they are steep, narrow, and it's always dark) when drunk and in heels. Many a female has gone down this way. And if you want a chill place to knock back a beer or two, stop by this spot in the early evening. It's all grownups and there's plenty of space to roam. The beer list is meh, but the prices aren't horrible. And the atmosphere rocks. What I would steer clear of, however, is the food. Now, granted, I've only tried it a handful of times, but every single time, its been disappointing. The wings were scrawny and kinda icky. The chili mac was close to inedible and pretty much flavorless. And so on and so on. And the service when you are seated at a table can be quite hit or miss. The last time I was here, I would say it was downright abismal. So, in short, it's an Adams Morgan bar suitable for grownups with an awesome dive-y atmosphere. This place can get super crowded but is tons of fun! The dance floor and Djs here are Awesome! My only issue was I got into an altercation on the second floor because there were 3 females who decided to sit down on the couches in the dance floor area and kept kicking me. If the area is for karaoke, and people are dancing, the couches may not be a good idea to be placed by the open dance area, as it may lead to people kicking those standing in the small area (which is what happened to me). They made me very mad, and I ended up leaving the venue because of their bad attitude. Had I been someone else, it might have resulted in much worse. Other than that, great drinks and ambiance! At first glance, you can't see more than the posterboard boobs plastered atop of the building. Once you get past that and the pierced/tattooed friendly guy at the door, its all downhill (read: upstairs) from there. The food wasn't at all what I expected. In fact, it was MUCH better. Went on a Tuesday, which -- lucky for ME -- was "1/2 Price Adam's Meatloaf" night. This made my meal a whooping $5 (not including my beverage) Score! I had collard greens and mac&cheese for sides, along with a slab of cornbread. I'm usually not a fan of cornbread, but I ate it. Its rare I'm able to find GOOD meatloaf made with ketchup. I was so happy to find that this was available. God, it was good. The portions are crazy HUGE, so I hope you make room in your fridge for leftovers. There was a cool Blue's band playing during dinner. My foot was just'a'tappin. I had such a good time. Can't wait for Drunkeoke Night! Decided to go to this bar for Halloween with a couple of my friends and had a blast! Hadn't been to this place in a very long time, at least in 6-7 years, so it was actually great to go again. Seemed smaller and a bit different than I remembered it to be, but we still had a fun time. Crowds were excited and fun to be around, probably moreso since a lot of people were dressed up in costumes to celebrate Halloween! We really enjoyed our time hanging out with everyone. The drinks were good, too. Prices seemed alright. $32 for 1 Heineken, 2 Blue Moons and 2 Rum & Cokes. Not too bad... Will definitely visit again. read more

Fun place! And from what I understand, a neighborhood staple. I had never been to the Adams Morgan area before but heard it was fun, artsy, and pretty alive. Being in DC for work and staying close by, I ventured over. I'm so glad I did! Lots of people, lots of food, lots of music. I wandered in to Madam's Organ as I am a big fan of all things jazz. The place was packed with people of so many different ages and looks, it was clearly a favorite of many. I sat at the bar and ordered a double bourbon. I think my bartender friend actually poured me a triple because it was a nice full glass. No complaints here! The music was a latin jazz band that was a better version of Santana and they really got everyone on their feet and dancing! It was a really cool place to be at that moment and I enjoyed my time there. It will definitely be a place I go to again when I am in the area. read more

I recently went out to Madams after two drinks with friends and had the most horrible customer service experience I have ever witnessed, and have worked in a variety of customer service roles myself. I and my group of friends had been loyal customers and came to the bar, waiting patiently in line, showing our IDs, and paying the cash cover fees. Once cleared, we proceeded upstairs normally to join the dancing. I then calmly informed my group I needed to use the women's room and proceeded to the hallway, where I waited and made casual conversation with another female patron while we both waited several minutes for the bathroom to open up. Once it became my turn, I did my business and then left the bathroom in clean, unmarred condition and was in there for under two minutes. At no point were any of us encountered by a staff member other than the initial door ID check and cover payment. When I emerged from the restroom, a male staff member immediately jumped in my face saying I needed to leave. I asked why and he kept belligerently repeating that I needed to go outside. I continued asking and he continued deflecting. My friend clocked the encounter and came over, asking him the same questions about what was wrong and why I was being asked to leave without purpose. He continued to deflect to us that we needed to speak to his manager outside and that I was apparently "too drunk," which was incorrect, as I had only had two drinks spaced out over hours before I came, and he had not thoroughly assessed, as I had not been unruly in any way, had not stumbled, slurred my speech, nor been a disturbance. My friend accompanied me outside as this employee continued belligerently forcing us to the door, refusing to give his name or explain why he was throwing me out for using the bathroom. When we got outside, we spoke to the female manager, who said that he told her I allegedly "walked through vomit," which she defended as my being too drunk to safely attend the bar. My friend and I both questioned her, as I had not stepped in any such puddle of vomit, which I would most definitely have smelled, felt, and remembered, and had not received any verbal, or tactual signals from staff members on my way up the dark and loud stairway. I had no vomit on my shoes, which were clean, dry, and did not smell. I then picked up both shoe soles to show both her and the witnesses around that they were, in fact, dry and clear of mess, which she refused to acknowledge. This is unacceptable on two counts: one being that I had not received a single warning from staff that I may have been in a hazardous area, (which I likely was not, given the cleanliness of my shoe soles, which I promptly showed to management), as well as the fact that it was extremely dark and loud in the establishment, which is a considerable obstacle for anyone trying to communicate, so even if I had somehow muddled through a vomit puddle, 1) it would not have been easily visible and should have been blocked off and cleaned immediately by Madams employees per health and safety code standards, and 2) it was too loud to be able to isolate background noise given the music playing on multiple floors, both rationales serve as evidence that even if an accidental misstep through a vomit puddle had occurred, it would in no way have been a marker of incapacitation due to alcohol consumption. The bouncers outside did return our cash deposits, but did not in any way apologize for the appalling way in which I and my friend were treated by the belligerent employee, as well as the closed-off manager. At no stage whatsoever were either of us listened to or respected to gather our side of the story, even when I asked both the employee and the manager if they would test my sobriety on the spot to verify that I was not as inebriated as the employee claimed, which they neglected to do. I am wholly disappointed, as was my entire party of friends who witnessed the event, as we all noted I was not intoxicated to the point of sloppy behavior and had not stumbled through any sort of human vomit, nor received any verbal or tactual signals from staff that I was in an alleged hazard area. I felt completely disrespected, steamrolled, disregarded, and ashamed of the customer service the Madans staff showed me that Saturday night, not even considering listening to my side or entertaining the possibility that their employee could have confused me with someone else or misinterpreted signals in a dark and loud environment. It was humiliating, unwarranted, hostile, and one-sided, without the employee or manager giving me or my friend the benefit of the doubt when we were both speaking and acting coherently and without missteps. The entire night left a bad taste not only in my mouth but those of the 8+ friends I had gone with, who were all similarly shocked at my treatment. I emailed them this feedback and never received even an acknowledgment. read more

I really want to like this place, I do, but I've just had so many horrible experiences here. From the bouncers with overly inflated egos, to the "no hat rule", to the obviously under the influence bartenders, I'm left with a pretty poor taste in my mouth (though not quite as poor as the drinks/prices). Went here last night with my Seeing Eye dog and had a miserable experience. There were hundreds of people in the bar to the point of it being a fire hazard (the fire marshall was actually called while I was there). Yet a man claiming to be the owner of the bar decided to single me out, first giving me a hard time at the door about the bar being crowded and me bringing my dog in, then ordering my friend and I to move on multiple occasions, first for blocking the stairs, then for being too close to the entrance (we were sitting on the bench in front to the right of the door). Meanwhile we literally had to force our way up and down the stairs so we were not doing anything different than any of the other customers. I guess the fact that I was out and about, asserting myself and taking up space made him uncomfortable. At one point the owner asked me to follow him through broken glass on the ground which could potentially injure my dog's paws, when I refused and tried to explain this to him multiple times he became verbally aggressive and instigated an argument with me.Multiple people witnessed this and offered apologies for the horrible treatment I received. I was asked to leave and was essentially denied access because of my service dog. Of course the owner said this was not the case, but there is no arguing the fact that an able bodied person would not have been harassed in this manner.Do yourself, and me, a favor and go somewhere else. The owner of this establishment needs to learn that there are consequences for mistreating folks with disabilities. We are just like everyone else and deserve to be treated with the same level of respect and dignity. My friend and I were just trying to have a fun night out after over a year of COVID restrictions, and my experience at this bar ruined it. Update: I wanted to update this review to respond to the comment by the owner. It's sad to see that Mr. Duggan has decided to try to portray me as someone who uses their disability as an excuse to mistreat others, with an ableist comment about how I wouldn't know there are hundreds of people in a bar because I can't see thrown in for good measure. It's interesting how Mr. Duggan claims that I was rude from the moment I entered the bar but later claims his first interaction with me was as I was sitting on the bench, over half an hour later. It's also funny that he claims to know the details of my discussion with the police officers when he was not even there. In fact, the officers were very kind to me, and after listening to my story they explained that I unfortunately did not have any recourse as I was not outright denied access because of my dog. They suggested that many of the other bars down the street would be more than happy to have me. That's certainly not something you would expect a police officer to say to someone who was kicked out of a bar under normal circumstances. So that's exactly what we did. No one gave us a hard time, it was a great night aside from the hour we spent at Madam's Organ being treated like trash. I 100% stand by my story. Yes, perhaps Mr. Duggan wasn't breaking the law, but it is completely reasonable to ask to be treated with the same level respect and dignity as able-bodied folks. That means not being treated like an inconvenience by him and by whoever spoke with me at the door when I arrived. That means not being harassed verbally by Mr. Duggan to put myself in a situation I was clearly uncomfortable with, to put my dog in a potentially dangerous situation (my previous guide dog cut her paw on broken glass and needed stitches, so this is not an exaggeration). And sorry, but having hosted veterans from Walter Reed doesn't give you a free pass on being welcoming and respectful to disabled folks. To anyone reading this, I strongly urge you to do your research as I'm far from the first individual to have had a bad experience with Mr. Duggan. This is a guy who complained about being called out for not having unisex restrooms in order to be welcoming to transgender folks, among bother things. Think about whether you want to support a business owned by someone like this. read more

The no-baseball-cap rule is just weird and seems a bit discriminatory, whether intentional or unintentional. Saw a couple other disgruntled black men inside because obviously with certain hair types, once you put a hat on for the night, you're not really going to look your best if forced to take it off. They also don't even tell you this rule at the door, but upon entering, rude bouncers will flash lights in your face and aggressively approach. Would expect/accept this policy at an upscale restaurant or bar, but this place is just some dive that for some reason charges cover? Was out with friends so put up with it for the night, but will never return to this place. Venue itself was cool and music was decent, except for when some drunk women were distracting the DJ onstage. They were clearly touching/flirting with the security on stage to be able to get up there and lessen the experience for everyone else, but clearly my blank, black hat was a more pressing issue. I went to this place earlier in the day around 7 pm. The waitress upstairs top floor was very pleasant. We came back to listen to the band & I went to the restroom. My date was sitting at a table. I asked for water and the waitress slammed my water on the table. I went to complain to the manager who went & talked to the waitress and then told me to get out. I tried to explain and he began to yell and told me to leave. I refused. As he and my date tried to clear it up, the manager became more angry. My date wanted to leave. I am born & raised in DC; I never have an issue protesting. I called the police & filed a formal complaint. read more

Such a fun little spot in AdMo! Came here for a few quick drinks with a friend and everything was so well priced and the bartenders were hilarious. They have a very cute (somewhat terrifying) balcony with spiral stairs that you can sit out on and it gives a great view of the area and is awesome for people watching read more

This place is interesting. It's very dark. The food is marketed as 'soul food' and living in the south, this was named soul food but not flavor soul food. Maybe some old lady who retired from Cracker Barrel cooks for them. That's the equivalent of flavor anyway. The entertainment of the evening was a tall, skinny, fella who had a great voice. The music and vibe is nice throughout all 3 levels. However, after going to Madams Organ multiple times I can say the service on the 2nd level is atrocious. Security is handsy and rough with anyone and everyone (including girls). The security staff loves to make the night all about them. The bartender is rude almost every time I go there. Came here on a random Wednesday night. Madam's Organ is an iconic place is adam's Morgan and I had always wanted to come here. Wednesday is Country music night. The ambience inside is fantastic. They have three stories. The first floor has the main live stage. The walls are decorated with many paintings (of women, mostly naked) and hunting trophies (not sure if they're real). The crowd on this floor was slightly mature. The second floor had another live stage, a pool table, and some couches to lounge. This floor also gives access to a balcony from where you can get a nice view of Adams Morgan. The top floor is on the roof and has a couple to tv screens showing live games. The crowd here was young. We had a couple of drinks. They had a lot of alcohol, but tasted like nothing worth remembering. But none of us really cared as the ambience and music was fantastic! read more

$5 for three floors of awesome can be quite the Saturday Night out! If you've ever been to Adams Morgan this place has most definitely caught your eye at some point. 1st floor - live band 2nd floor - DJ & tiny balcony 3rd floor - covered patio Madam's Organ is really fun but quite crowded and in summers can get really hot. More often than not the place is reminiscent of a college party but then again most places in Adams Morgan do feel that way. However I feel it's less so like that on the first floor. Had such a fun evening last night at Madam's Organ. A friend at work (in the UK) spent 6 months living and working in Washington for a previous job and said she spent many nights here and recommended it to me. I was really pleased when I find out it was just 10mins walk from our hotel! There was a $4 per person charge on the door as they had a live band in, but it was definitely worth it. We were there just before the band started and managed to get a seat at the bar. It was advertised as bluegrass, which we weren't sure what that genre of music was but we loved it! The band were amazing, there was a great atmosphere and a few people were dancing. The drinks were good, the place very quirky but the band really made it for me. They have different music each night of the week so it's a real shame we're not here longer to experience another fun night at Madam's Organ. read more

Review for 5/28/2012 I have seen the busty red head since moving to the area 6 years ago, and for some reason, the place never appealed to me. After reading awesome reviews on yelp, I decided to give it a try on a Monday night. When I walked in, I climbed many stairs to the rooftop. Ladies, when you decide to wear those "f-me pumps" here make sure that you stay on one floor SOBER. Each floor and section has a bar, so there is no need to have empty hands. I settled for the bar in the far back because the game was on, and the bartender, Kesha (I believe) was awesome. I ordered the 3 veggie plate--- mac and cheese (WOW!), string beans (DAMN good), and fried okra (nice). My friend had the burger, which he HATED, but the bartender promptly put in an order for wings, which he adored. I ordered the One Night Stand, but it had a vague taste of children's cough syrup. She added more sprite, and I was in heaven. My next drink options were red wines. The brand was Night Harvest, and it was NICE! The band was great! I enjoyed swaying to R&B and reggae while sipping red wine and taking glimpse at the game. Although my beloved Celtics got spanked, the music and wine made EVERYTHING perfectly ok ;-) read more
