Interesting lighting and decor make this a pleasant place to dine.

Being vegetarians, my wife and I appreciate when a restaurant offers meatless food that still tastes good. We ordered the vegetable egg rolls which came with a very different and delicious sauce than the run of the mill duck sauce and hot mustard. They were a crisp and hot when served and we would order them again. We both ordered the vegetable ramen which was loaded with plenty of fresh vegetables and rice noodles in a wonderful broth which was not too salty. The dish had plenty of umami for our pallets and we both highly recommend this choice for others who want to avoid meat. The restaurant is convenient to downtown and just around the corner from the Pablo Center where we had tickets for the Eau Claire Jazz Festival kickoff concert. The space overlooks the Eau Claire River just above the confluence with the Chippewa River.

The place was very open, lots of light, friendly and outgoing. Right next to the river. Prices were reasonable and the food was great.

The ramen broth had no flavor, even with the addition of chili oil and soy sauce. Noodles were undercooked. The pork belly was done to perfection. Spouse had a vegetarian poke bowl which was ok. The place is very well designed and nice to look at. But broth needs work - someone in our party got a different ramen bowl and also thought it was tasteless.

Very quiet atmosphere and our server was very nice - kept checking back to be sure we were happy. Liked the vibe. The food was nice, but nothing special.

Review Visit: November 13th, 2024 You'd have to be mad to skip this place. For the short while that Tim has lived in Eau Claire, he has always said great things about Madden Ramen. With that in mind, we made plans to visit here on this trip to visit him. After getting our gaming on at Rebbot Social, we walked the few minutes over to Madden and were promptly seated. Our waitress was quick and attentive with seating us and taking our orders and clearing off the table as we finished. Tim and I talked about the menu a little bit and he highlighted the few things he's had here before. I am a sucker for spicy stuff so I ended up getting the Madden Ramen. Tim ended up getting the same plus one of their boba teas to go with it. The food didn't take long to come out and while we were being served, I ordered a Kirin Ichiban beer to go with it. I'm glad I got the beer to go with it as this sucker was hot hot hot. Not only temperature hot but also spicy hot. Each bite was delicious but left me sweating a bit... which is a good thing. Tim talked this place up and it delivered with every bite of the ramen and every swig of my beer. The food tastes of high quality and the cuts of pork made me wish I ordered it with extra beef. It was dang good. Each bite a treat for the taste buds. For how good the food here is, it's pretty easy to pop in for a quick bowl and dip out after you finish. Maybe not for the hotter bowls but this can be a quick trip if you need a quick bite. On our way out, I did stop and get a pokeball from the coin machine. I got a Darmanitan, I think? I'm not familiar with any pokemon after Gen 2. I also tried the claw machine and came close to getting an Ash Ketchum twice but it slipped out after the claw fully retracted. Had I a few more dollar bills, it would've been mine. I'm definitely looking forward to visiting here again once I return to Eau Claire in 2025. Our friend Matt will be joining us then and he is in for a treat.

What a beautiful restaurant! The lighting, the cherry blossoms on the walls and the koi sinks in the bathroom!#love The service was kind, helpful and immediate. The food was delicious! I had the Madden salad and gyoza. My son had ramen with pork belly. I highly recommend and can't wait to go back!

I would give 3.5. The location was pretty good, ramen was fine. Chewy noodles and flavorful soup. We ordered the bun and the sauce was a little over powering. And I felt the chicken karage was a bit burnt. Hence taking off the stars. I did hear good reviews from others so maybe my experience was a fluke. There are lots of typos on the menu.

Took the kids to Madden Ramen and we were all impressed! I had the Madden Ramen and it was full of flavor--maybe the best ramen I've ever had. My son got the steak ramen and tore it up, and my daughter loved her spicy poke bowl. We also tried their fried chicken (crispy and well-seasoned) and some delicious boba drinks. Everything hit the spot. Definitely recommend.

This restaurant has an open, modern space on the eau Claire river. Table service, open kitchen. I went on a Monday just afternoon. I was alone. I will see you immediately. I had a Boba tea which was delicious. And I had a pork ramen which was excellent. Poke is also on the menu. I brought my wife here two days later. We had the potstickers and eggrolls as an appetizer. They were good. I had the curry chicken, it certainly was not as good as the ramen I had a few days earlier. We both had the Boba milk tea, which was absolutely delicious. I had the taro milk tea with tapioca Boba.

Love the food, aesthetic, and location! They have friendly employees that really took care of us. I ordered the Madden Ramen which was a perfect combination of creamy, flavorful and spicy. It's near a park with so many seating areas so my friend and I took a walk afterwards and relaxed. I enjoyed everything and plan on going back.

I was visiting my family for the holidays and decided to grab some lunch ramen for the cold day. Being from LA I've tried lots of ramen spots, and this one exceeded my expectations. I ordered the side of gyoza and Madden Ramen. Both were amazing! The ramen was perfect for the chilly weather. The one thing I will say is the pork was a bit dry but still tasted great. Service was good! Will definitely be visiting again next time I'm around this town.

    Curry Chicken

We ordered miso ramen, chicken curry and shrimp curry. Ramen was 4/10 because the broth lacked flavor! The curry is a 6/10 for the large quantity of protein and food. Overall, the flavor was mid. The service was fast and attentive, but not personable. At the end we were asked if we wanted a punch card and said "no." They made us feel bad for not wanting a punch card! Don't know if we would attend again for the food, but would get boba

TLDR: creative cocktail and good menu with a Wisconsin twist…read more I brought my group of 8 family and friends here and everyone loved what they ordered! The menu features a lot of local Wisconsin produce and Wisconsin favorites with a twist, like Baked Cheese Curds (the tomato jam is SO GOOD) and Portobello Poppers with a wild rice and cheddar filling (it was so tasty I couldn't believe it was vegetarian!). Everyone really liked the Chicken Fried Rabbit (obviously, not our veg friend lol). The buttermilk-brined rabbit leg was so juicy and tender. The red cabbage slaw on the side was a perfect pairing. The Candied Pork Belly just melted in my mouth, no joke! And I love that it was seasoned with hoisin sauce and came with some baba ghanoush, which you'd think wouldn't go together--but it so does. For my main, I had the Grilled Ribeye and my bf had the Roasted Lamb. Both were cooked to perfection (medium rare) and both were phenomenal! The chimichurri on the side had some sweet kick to it but the steak didn't even need it bc it was plenty flavorful and tasty. The lamb was so tender and the mint gelee was *chef's kiss*. The Great Lakes Walleye was served on a nice tomato confit brodo and my bf's parents absolutely loved how imaginative it was. We all thought it'd just come out with a side of potatoes or something but the presentation blew us away AND they said it was very lovely. The kids loved their How 'Bout Them Apples pizza, which wouldn't have been my first choice (apples on pizza?!) but it did look tasty! For drinks, I ordered the Seamus (which is basically an old fashioned with Irish whiskey) and my partner ordered the Watermelon Mojito. I couldn't believe he liked the Seamus bc he usually hates old fashioneds but tbf it was a very well balanced cocktail! His Watermelon Mojito was refreshing and yummy (but a little too sweet for me). My bf and our friend both loved it tho! We'll definitely be back again the next time we pass thru Eau Claire!!

But they seated us anyway, and took good care of us. The food is good. We just had a small shared salad and pizza. But I'll be honest it isn't as good as some of the more formal restaurants that I have been to.. (but again we only had pizza).

We are partial to sitting at restaurant bars when we go out to eat. The Shanghai Bistro bar is always in need of a wipe-down when we sit down at an otherwise barely occupied bar. We love the food, but when we have to ask the completely uninterested bartender to clean his bar, this gets the experience off to an unpleasant beginning. We've had the same bartender each of the three times we've been there and each time it seems as if he'd rather be anywhere but there. Even after leaving a note on my credit card slip last time suggesting he take more pride in his department, the bar area is still in pretty sorry shape. Shanghai Bistro used to be PACKED on weeknights as well as weekends. Even on a Wednesday night -- which is their sushi special night -- the fact that the place had perhaps 20 diners demonstrates that something has gone wrong. We will undoubtedly return despite these last three unpleasant experiences. We simply hope that reviews such as this one will reach the eyes of those who need to read them.
