This is a fun and unique park for the kiddos! Lots of vibrant colors and playground equipment I haven't seen anywhere else. Lots of room to roam. Four infant swings instead of just two (or none) like most parks. It's not five stars because of the sand and only street parking. I hate parks with sand or wood chips. That crap gets everywhere. And no restrooms. Surprising for such a large park. The dog park is pretty far from the playground. I didn't look at it although I did hear one dog fight with a lot of yelling. Sounded fairly serious. This is a good park for the little ones. Just piddle before you go. And bring a DustBuster for your car afterwards. read more

This is a great park! They have a ton of space and something for everyone. There is a fairly large dog park that in inclosed. Each time I go it is pretty busy (10-15 dogs). They also have a few concrete benches to sit on. There is a massive grass area that is perfect for picnics! Hands down the worst dog park in san diego and some of the worst dog owners in san diego. Our little dog is super beta and just rolls over on his back for other dogs to sniff him when he gets in and what happens?? We turn our back to hang up the leash and within seconds a pitbull pins our dog down and takes a bite out of his face. So what happens as our dog is bleeding and screaming?? The other owners tell us it's fine and that the other dog was just playing. The owner of the pitbull doesn't apologize and doesn't even come to help pull his dog off of ours. Then tells us that this has never happened before. Well you know what? One time is one time too many. I freaking hate the dog owners here. They acted like we were the ones over reacting as our dog was bleeding from his snout. If you want your small or medium sized dog to get attacked and to bleed with a-hole dog owners who think it's fine that your dog gets attacked then this is the place for you because you are probably an a-hole too. This is a pretty decent size park it has two sections one for kids and one for dogs. The dog area is gated and the entrances are double doors so no worries on your dog running out when it opens. The dog area is pretty big enough for zoomies and scavenging. Its mostly dirt in that area so expect a dusty dog. Maddox Park is one of the nicer neighborhood parks in Mira Mesa. I like the fenced in area for dogs to run around, though mine bark so much at every other dog outside, I have to skip the place. Also, the little fitness stations that are there are a nice touch. However, parking here is nonexistent (you have to park alongside the sidewalk)... and when rush hour hits, Flanders Drive gets really packed. At that point, forget about heading here (and if you already are, good luck getting out)! read more

I've only seen an aggressive dog once. To which I asked the owner to put her dog on a leash and she did. I've never met irresponsible owners here except for the occasional "un picked up dog poo". The only other time I would really complain about is when a lady was letting her 1-2 year old walk around at ground level with several large dogs around. That was irresponsible of her... and she kept doing it even after her child got knocked down a few times. There definitely is a Friday night crew that all bring their dogs together. Yes they're kind of cliquish, but so what? They're friends. Get over it. I didn't find them to be snotty. What is this, high school? (No I'm not part of that group.) I do wish that they had small dog and big dog separation, but I've never seen any aggression toward little ones. If your small dog doesn't like big dogs, then this isn't the park for you. My dogs (who are both 60+) like playing with small dogs and do quite great with them. I always ask the owner if it's ok if the small dog looks fearful. No one has ever said that it wasn't ok. The park is large enough where you can walk to the other side of the area and avoid any dog you don't particularly like. Really happy that we have a park this close to home. There's water and shade, and enough room for me to run around with my dogs. There's a nice play area too... one parent can go to the kid area and one can stay with the dogs. :-) read more

Yes it is true that if your dog cannot do well with mixed sizes (both big and small dogs) and your dog is not sociable enough then maybe this isn't the place for you. And if you feel this way then it is probably a lack of training or because your dog senses YOUR apprehension. The size of the field is great where your dog does not feel too far away from you. I went at about 5:30p on Wed and there was a lot of people. But the owners were very friendly and attentive and paid attention to their dogs. I will definitely be returning! read more

At the end of the day, it's up to you if you want to take your dog into the dog park. Maggie and Ike both love running around and sniffing everything in this huge open dog park but we always check to see the dog situation inside before letting them in. We've been to the park a handful of times where we've heard fights and just turned around and walked home. The times that we have gone in we've met some awesome dogs and owners and both the dogs had a bunch of fun. If you want to take your dog, especially if he/she is a little one, just be a little observant before entering. read more

This dog park is the best. Sure, there are issues but that comes with the territory - you get all types of people that make up your community. That's what makes it great. This park is for the dogs and all dogs that come here seem to have a great time. There is even a group who take their dogs off-leash on a trail behind the dog park. It's a great pack walk for the dogs. People who come with bad attitudes will have a bad day period. By the way, dog fights can break out with dogs anywhere and it shouldn't reflect badly on the park. Used to be an ok dog park, you know, tolerating other dog owners. NOW I CAN'T STAND IT! It's just 3 blocks away from where I live but I drive to another dog park. Too many snotty dog owners! To the point where you just want to kick them in the face and remind them that dogs are not human kids! Be careful, if you go there you might get lectured about your dog acting like...well, a DOG! First time I took my 5 month old pups there a lady told me "Please take off their collars, I once heard a story about two dogs wrestling and one dog's jaw got stuck in the other dog's collar and it choked to death" THAT should've been a warning of what was to come of that dog park... after that awkward incident, I kept getting lectured about my dog being too "aggressive" with their dogs....... in their mind it was aggression. My puppy was wresting and chasing playfully with the other dogs. The other dogs were all happy and in harmony, the dog owners are the biggest issue in this dog park. Oh, you'll also run in to people that cannot control their own dogs. rarely will you meet nice people. nd there are A LOT of aggressive hyper pitbulls there. read more

As far as parks go, this place is pretty awesome since they have a separate segregated dog park. However, as far as specialty dog parks go... its just ok. As a dog park, there is no small dog big dog separation, its all one big scary crazy play fest. You definitely need to be alert and ready for a big guy screaming by or big fights. As a park however, its nice and simple. There's a giant open area for you to do whatever you like. Grass isn't the greatest.. but it works. Its right along a busy street, so kids need to be careful. There are a few play structures for kids to play on.. but they are old and some are broken too. Come to think of it.. this park really isn't that great hahah! I guess i seem to be partial to it b/c it has a nice open feel to it. Theres so much sunshine and you get a nice clear view. Probably 2 stars for the park, but it gets 3 for the views read more

This is a smaller park, and a little to tight for my comfort. Unlike many dog parks of this size, this park is not divided into a smaller/ Bigger dog areas. The people and dogs here are at best a "B" I don't know why owners bring their dogs that are barely suitable to be outside on a leash. Overall, if you get a good crowd here you can have a great time, but if you show up and there are a bunch of dogs that don't look friendly, they probably aren't. Nice dog park. It's really big which is good to get your pup's energy out if play chase with other dogs or running after balls/toys. It's tucked in the back corner of a nice big park and grass area in a nice neighborhood. I have a small dog, 15 ish pounds, and this park doesn't have the small/big sides like many other parks have. I've always let my pup run with the big dogs so for me that's not an issue. I'm fairly new to this dog park and I've mostly had great times; my dog included. The people are friendly aside from maybe a couple people. Not that they were rude, just unsocial I suppose. I will say that some dogs can shows signs of dominance. Not aggression but things like standing over smaller dogs, or any others and not giving much space. My dog has grown up at parks and is very social with other dogs. Sometimes when a bigger dog is towering over her and not giving her space she will occasionally yap a lil and try to get space which some dogs take as aggressive behavior I would assume. She's never been in an altercation. When this happens I'm on it and either try and move to the other side of the park or leave depending on the vibe. I feel that dogs are like people in that not everyone is going to get along. I give this park 4/5 stars because it's all dirt and has a few weedy patches ( not a deal breaker, just would prefer grass). Also I've noticed some owners that don't pay much attention to their dog which is annoying if their dog is showing a bit of dominance or "bugging" other dogs. So overall a good dog park. My advice to anyone going for a first time is to cruise around the outside of the park and "read the room" so to speak. read more

This dog park is mediocre at best. I used to only go when I was sure that it wouldn't be crowded because of all the negligent owners that do attend this park. Not only that, but there is the "core" group of people that attend this park and think they own it. They make all the other people who don't belong to their group feel very uncomfortable. I've seen people leave because they were so rude. So now I just walk in the open space above the dog park. I get irritated that people take their dogs up their off leash because it creates a disturbance for all the people that do abide by the leash laws here. read more

Lovely good sized neighborhood dog park. Most of the dogs are well socialized and well behaved. My dog, a 55 pound rescue from San Felipe, Mexico is friendly to other dogs and with people. He's never had a problem at this park. We appreciate the entry gates, the always available fresh water and poop bags, and the dog friendly attitude of most of the people most of the time. Most people pick up after their dogs if they see their dog doing the deed, and usually people pick up any mess they see. read more

I've been going to this park for a while. There's hardly any small dogs. I find that it's full of larger breeds. I have a Jack Russel Terrier and he loves the big dogs. I haven't had any issues, but I know there have been cases of aggressive dogs. That doesn't make this place a bad park. You'll run into aggressive dogs and shitty owners ANYWHERE. We love this neighbor hood park playground! Very creative play structure, with "kid powered energy" that uses the kids turning a steering wheel to generate power for car sounds. A climbing wall, swings, little kids area and big kids area, a cool rocking "boat", covered picnic takes. Only bummer: no bathrooms. Extra perk in '13-14 is the construction going on next door, your little kids will love watching the diggers (they wrap up their day around 3pm). read more

Not sure how I feel about this place yet.. I brought my dog for a walk around the park but noticed the terrible amounts of dog poop on the grass near the pathway/curb. I stepped on the grass so my dog could sniff around but then saw there were tons and tons of logs of dog poop laying around! I thought it was wood and stuff but it was all poop.. I didn't even want to walk anymore in the grass after seeing that everywhere. Not sure how I'd feel about letting my kids run around there too, stepping in all of that. The grass looks like it hasn't been cut in a couple months, not sure what's going on there either, lots of long weeds and long grass. Pretty gross. The upside is I'm sure if this place got a good mowing and clearing of poop that it would be a wonderful park to be at. Shame on people for not picking up after their dog (there's a lot of you) and shame on the city for not taking better maintenance of the greenery. Is there no maintenance for this place? I've been to parks that have signs with notices that they clean up the grass one evening a week. I didn't see any signs here which makes me wonder if they even do it? I can't say anything for the closed off dog area but I can't imagine it being any cleaner in there. read more

WORST dog park in San Diego. I've used it quite a few times, trying different time of the day. There was NO TIME without an aggressive dog. FULL of irresponsible dog owners, too busy chatting and not focused on their dogs 100%. People with aggressive dogs DO NOT correct their dogs. Don't apologize to the victimized dogs to aggravate the situation but CORRECT the dog and LEAVE and never come back until the dog is fully trained professionally. I'll bet half of total injuries (dogs or people) in San Diego dog parks happen in Mira Mesa dog park. If you want your dogs to learn aggression, it's the best place to be. If the dog has a muzzle on, it may not bite dogs or people, but it can still intimidate and bully other dogs, and fearful dogs will eventually turn into aggressive dogs. People are too irresponsible, and I'm sure they blame non-aggressive dogs for attacks. I wouldn't even give one point for this place. It is UNSAFE. The majority of people have NO COMMON SENSE. Unless some kind of community effort of education or official screening happens, this dog park is a VERY unsafe place. No wonder dog parks are called "dog ghettos". read more

I've been using them for a few weeks, 3-4x a week. I agree with Gina totally. Aggressive dogs and irresponsible owners big time. People even bring babies in despite the sign outside. When the dog harasses another dog, they should just leave! No dog is perfect, but fixated aggression toward any particular dog should not be tolerated at all. "Old timers" seem to be okay about aggressive dogs going after a timid dog, as long as their own dogs aren't involved. Usually the non-aggressive intimidated dogs leave. I can't complain too much about much needed improvement since it's larger than anybody's backyard for dogs to run. The only request I have is a larger very visible sign of "NO CHILDREN". My dog is not aggressive toward other dogs or humans at all, but a 55 lb dog running full speed could really hurt children. A sign of "fine prints" posted on the gate, but I'm sure people and attorneys find the way to sue. Again, generally people with aggressive dogs REALLY tend to ignore the behavior and not leave. Telling the dog to "play with a different dog" is not the way to handle it when an aggressive dog picks on one smaller/timid one. NOT all dogs belong to the dog park, period. I live blocks away, and I hate to have to drive my dog to another dog park. But there are too many dogs with aggression in this park (especially GSD, pits, & boxers) whose owners just "don't get it". read more

This is a pretty decent sized dog park, plenty of space for your dog to play and run around. There is a water fountain located near the gate as well as several bowls and jugs of water located at the back corner of the park. These jugs are most likely filled by the dog owners here. There are also several benches located around the perimeter in the park, some in the shade and some out. And of course, the park provides poop bags. There tends to be muddy areas so if you don't want your dog to bathe in it, make sure you are in control! There are some dogs that are aggressive, and there are a few owners that don't pull away their dogs when necessary. I've either witnessed or experienced times like these when dog owners don't know when to pull their dogs away. Be wary when you do bring your dog here. And there are dog owners that just don't pick up their dog's waste. So watch where you step! read more

Not a dog parent but I do like the kiddie area of the park. There are 2 swing sets, a big gazebo for bigger parties (no roof though so it gets really hot on sunny days), picnic tables and play structures. Furthere in, there is a big area for open play with awesome views! There is also a walking with workout stations along the way. The kid playground is not fenced in though, and it is on a busy street, so there is a huge safety issue for me. There is adequate parking on the street on regular days, but it gets busy on weekends. read more

We met some amazing huskies and a 140lb malamute who all deserve a big hand for living so long and still healthy. My favorite dog park in all of San Diego. I'm glad that they let the small and large dogs roam around together. My shih tzu doesn't like playing with the small dogs. The field is large for the dogs to have more than enough room to sniff around and dart off as they please. There are occasional owners that don't keep a close eye out on their dogs, but the excellent experience I've had over there with the owners that are more responsible definitely outweigh the others. read more
