For a span of several months last year, we had a recurring pattern where…read morewe would eat at Willow and Whisk, and while seated at our table enjoying our amazing food, we would make our next reservation to dine again at Willow and Whisk two months later. (Reservations are not that easy to make last minute.) The restaurant is big and open but always busy. Kids get wax craft sticks to play with and bend into cool shapes, which I find very unique and cool. I feel like there is a difference between a diner and a true brunch place. A diner, of which there are numerous in New Jersey, is a establishment that churns out inexpensive, and potentially excellent, but very standard breakfast food - omelettes, pancakes, benedicts and the like. A true brunch place, on the other hand, offers things like lemon ricotta pancakes, cacio e pepe scrambles, mushroom thyme omelettes and shakshuka. Willow & Whisk is that kind of brunch place, and which is rare in New Jersey. The food options are varied, very tasty, and with good portion sizes. I love the shakshuka and the mushroom thyme omelette. Oh gosh, when is our next reservation again?

I asked if I could do 2% milk with my latte at 8am with only 1 other table in the restaurant. Waitress told me it's whole or skim. I asked if she could mix them, half and half. She said it takes too long for the bartenders... I said "there's 2 people here, mind if you make an exception?" To which she followed up with "no, it's a rule." Okay fine... I'll settle for my $7 latte I guess. Following that, I ordered the mushroom thyme omelette, the second bite I took had a full on hard stick from the thyme I almost choked on (not chewy, hard - see pictures). I decided to let it slide, these things happen with fresh herbs. 2 more bites in, another massive stem stick jabbed me. If I had given my daughter either of those bites, it could have been scary. I sent it back. I love their coffee, and the shukshukka (botching the spelling). But for how much you pay, their service is inconsistent and these errors are painful (literally). I'll likely come back for the coffee and vibes but won't be bending over backwards to do brunch here.

This may be THAT coffee because I def spent $10.58 on a turmeric coffee today. And I do not own a house. I'm also not a millennial so there's that. Anyway this was THE BEST COFFEE IVE HAD SO TAKE MY MONEY AGAIN AND AGAIN. Weirdly enough I was actually on the hunt for a Dunkin but my maps showed none within 20 miles. Which obvs is a lie since there's one on every corner but Whomdst am I to question the almighty Apple Maps in an unfamiliar town? It must have been kismet because as soon as I pulled into Pour City I saw DD across the street lol. But as I told my PhD advisor in year 8, I'm not a quitter so I will see this thing through (spoiler: I did quit). I was committed to the bit. Pour City had me at turmeric latte. A maple turmeric latter with espresso and oat milk to be exact. Of course the one time I don't bring my phone with me the place is super cute. I made it shake by taking pics of the coffee itself in the car. Super smooth, velvety even. Rich in flavor. Sensational. I legitimately live 60 miles away. There is ZERO reason for me to ever go all that way for a cuppa again. But I will. Gladly.

To be sure, there are a growing number of coffee options in North Jersey and Pour City ranks at the top. Owners and staff are coffee experts who gladly share their coffee knowledge in detail. The shop is clean and hangout worthy. Most important, beans are excellent single source, roasted in house, packed and dated in one-pound bags, which is unique these days. Coffee beans are ground to order when sold, but not before two days after roast. This allows time for gasses to escape and a better taste. We usually choose a medium-dark roast that provides a balanced flavor. Not withstanding the 5-star there is a strong caveat that a few coffee enthusiasts may care about. The house grinder does not grind coarse enough for french press which produces residue in the cup and some bitterness in the brew. This is irrelevant if you have a burr grinder and grind to your liking. We buy the slightly too-fine ground coffee anyway, because we enjoy the beans and deal with it. So, if you are not a french press enthusiast or have your own burr grinder, or simply don't care, then ignore the gripe and go for it. Pour City is rich (pun intended) with great coffee. ;

There's space to wait for your order too- so if it's cold or raining, there's room for you. They're open 7a-7p which is great. It was busy when I ran in today around 12:45p on a Sunday and that's always a good sign. It looks clean and the drinks I saw looked appetizing. The food menu sounds fantastic. The guy who helped me with my order was super nice. But I actually went in there on the hunt for something specific. It's the 2nd time I went in since they moved to the space across the street from where they were. The first time I stopped in quickly and saw they had what I was looking for but very few so I didn't buy anything. l had done a very difficult and time intensive Google search for Macaron Cafe macarons. They wholesale out of NYC and they're the best macarons ever. There are probably 6-7 places in Ridgewood that sell macarons, some that make them fresh baked. And none are as good as the ones from Macaron Cafe. Pre-covid I could find them locally pretty easily. But now, it's really hard. Most of the places that sell them put up a menu of the flavors that's very easily identifiable, and they carry the full line. By googling a photo of the menu I was able to find them in Fort Lee and American Dream and those are both too far. I'd gone into every single place that sells macarons in downtown Ridgewood except RCC and none of them have them. I finally made it into Ridgewood when RCC is open (we usually end up in Ridgewood after dinner and they're closed) and imagine my joy in seeing the macarons there. I can tell it's them instantly. Except - they only have like eight of the flavors! They don't advertise them. They don't have the menu up either, so they only way I could tell there might be a chance of them being there was an old photo of their counter from Yelp or Google. So, I didn't have any drinks or food. I just bought some macarons. And I would've bought more except that they didn't really have the flavors I wanted. There are generally around 28-32 flavors and they change/add/take away every few months/holidays, etc. My knocking a star is ONLY for the lack of flavors of these amazing macarons and only having a tease amount of flavors of them. And they should advertise their baked goods/desserts better, like in photos on instagram. They don't post enough of all their food. I had to just take a chance and come in from an old photo. I know I don't want to have to drive to American Dream mall for these macarons. And I know the girls behind me in line today were talking about how they came in for tiramisu.

There's a huge assortment of appetizers and they tend to make me full before I dive into the entrees! My favorite appetizers are the Pani Puri shots - crunchy and a pop of saucey flavor! I also loved the Fish Amritsari- it was fried with a nice crust but still so juicy and flakey inside! I love the various dishes, sauces and curries for entrees and it's hard for me to choose my favorite - if I had to, I would choose the Vegetable Biryani because of the nice bread crust on the top and the hot flavorful rice inside! I will definitely recommend that you try the Atom Bomb - chocolate cake with strong rose flavored ice cream - such a great combo! I tried a bit of the éclair and we both agreed that it was the star of the show. I normally am not a big éclair person but this one was so chocolatey and rich. It was filled with this creamy, fresh chocolate filling. I strongly dislike the store bought cream filling that they are usually piped with.
