The manager/owner had a really stressed, snippy energy and was speaking pretty harshly to an employee named Stephanie right in front of customers. It honestly made the place feel tense instead of relaxing. I think things could run a lot smoother if the staff was treated with more professionalism. Small coffee shop with a cozy atmosphere, I came by to try the coffee and possibly a vegan treat; turns out they have vegan pastries and cookies available which is wonderful! I was greeted by a great staff member and the service was fast! I also came on a possibly less busier day. I tried the pistachio latte with macadamia milk. Unfortunately, it's the only reason I didn't put 5 stars! The drink was more coffee than non-dairy milk for a latte but I would go again to ask for that request! I've visited a few times and this place is a great spot to grab a cup of coffee and cookie when you're on the go. Personally, I find the inside a little too tight for catching up with friends. If you do visit during the summer and are lucky enough to find a spot outdoors, then you're in for a treat. Considering the shop isn't on the main drag, foot traffic is much lighter so you don't have to worry about people eyeing you down for your table. Don't waste your time or money at American Bulldog Coffee Roasters. I've been a loyal customer of American Bulldog Coffee Roasters for years, but I won't be coming back. I bought a $7 coffee and brought in a bagel to enjoy with it -- something I've never had an issue with at any other coffee shop. Instead of a warm welcome, I was told I couldn't eat my bagel there. I even mentioned I'd make sure not to bring outside food next time, but I was still told I couldn't finish the meal I was already in the middle of. Absolutely ridiculous. To make things worse, the coffee quality isn't what it used to be -- it's far too milky now, and definitely not worth the premium price. What a beautiful coffee shop... definitely wish there was more seating, but it's large enough to accommodate personal and smaller groups! The coffee here is excellent and especially if you are patient enough wait for the pour over. Make sure to ask for the roast date and origin of the beans. Some of the baristas don't seem as familiar with the notes of the beans, but how many really are?!? It just took a really long time for the coffee and the price was a bit on the higher end. Love the atmosphere and coffee but I've had better and I've had it cheaper. While waiting for our friends to decide on what coffee they wanted, we got distracted and took a little longer to order our coffee. Visited when in the area this weekend. The shop has a cool, laid-back, air to it and appeared to be a comfortable place to hang out for a while to enjoy a coffee. The girl working behind the counter was incredibly friendly and helpful. I ordered an iced red-eye and my other half ordered a caramel macchiato, which came out a quarter full because of how they make them there. We also purchased an oatmeal cookie. All said and done, this was $17 for these 3 small items. If the place was great, I wouldn't mind this, as we love coffee and always support local. I've down-sized my coffee needs at Bulldog to red-eyes lately -- which I take straight up -- but in the process I really need to say this place is 5 star worthy for me -- for a bunch of reasons. When American Bulldog Coffee Roasters first opened, I didn't think it would stand a chance against its competitors (in particular, one coffee shop situated only a few short blocks away). But in the years since, I've been proven wrong. While I admit that American Bulldog still isn't my first choice, their coffee does satisfy when the mood strikes. Plus, they're family owned and use locally roasted beans, which I like to support whenever possible. I typically stick to their drip coffee and prefer the light and medium roasts. Their Japanese-style iced coffee is also nice during the summer. They specialize in gluten-free, vegan and organic baked goods, but I can't really speak to their taste, as I mostly stop in just for a cup of coffee. The main downside, and one of the reasons I usually go elsewhere, is that American Bulldog's prices are much higher than their competitors. I could probably justify the pricing if the quality matched, but while their coffee is good, it doesn't blow me away. read more

The coffee here is actually amazing - it's bold, strong and energizing. I had a cortado and blueberry lemon mini muffin. The muffin had oats and was very tasty (but also expensive $4 for ~5 bites) ! They make their own muffins, pastries, scones and cookies in house so they are decently fresh. They offer a gluten free selection as well. The space itself is adorable, great for working or catching up w/ a friend. There's even a fireplace which must feel so nice in the winter. They have a coffee ice cream selection that I believe is also organic and a homemade production, but I did not try that today. read more

TLDR: Prices are quite expensive, and you can't sit inside if you have any outside items related to food, even if you buy food/drink from the cafe. A friend came from out of town to visit and I wanted to show her the local coffee shops so we first went to Ridgewood Coffee Company where we got one small drink. Then we came to American Bulldog to order more food/drinks and to sit down. As we entered, we were still carrying the small coffee cup from the other cafe, which was our downfall. We ordered a small banana walnut muffin and a chamomile tea which totaled to $9.95. We started to sit down near the fireplace but we were told by an employee we could not sit. The employee was an older man who seemed upset and scolded us, "You can't sit with outside food. Come on, now!" We were confused because we had purchased food and drink from his cafe and wanted to eat inside. There was only one other customer in the store and many tables open for seating. Listen to the other reviews talking about how bad the owner is. I was waiting in line behind someone, the owner (a bald man) was taking their order, & someone was behind me. When the person in front of me was done, the owner completely ignored me and looked at the person behind me and asked for their order. The person behind me said I was in front of them so then only he took my order. While waiting for my drink, a lady came in and I assume they know each other/she's a regular because after she ordered, she asked "how do you say 'thank you' in Hebrew?" After he told her, they started talking about their Jewish ancestry and the owner went "I am German and Russian Jew. We are very racist. I am too!" Mind you, I was the ONLY colored person in that cafe and he said it when I was right there. I see someone else who is brown also had another bad experience relating to race. As someone who is a Ridgewood resident, I am not surprised by the bigoted behavior considering how the people in this town act. I stand off to the side by the kitchen to wait for my drinks to be made-and she doesn't even acknowledge you-she just walks right by. No hello -no "how is everything?" . The American bulldog coffee shop is a nice place to come in and study/read. The coffee is pretty good. The Earl grey ice cream was a nice surprise. Very creamy and has a strong tea finish. The Columbian coffee is strong and great to wake you up. The cortado was served in a glass cup. Milky texture with a strong coffee flavor- great for those that like cappuccinos with a strong coffee flavor. The ambiance is pretty casual and relaxing. Great spot to stop for coffee or tea or even ice cream (I think...we were there in the morning so none of our crew grabbed any sweet treats). The place isn't all that spacious and yet they make the most of what they've got as there were tons of tables, each one of them filled with customers sipping coffee, chatting, or working remotely. I got a drip coffee, which was just good--no more, no less--and I will say, our entire crew of 10+ got their drinks just as fast as I got my drip. They were very efficient with their process and processed us in about 10 minutes, drinks and all. ONLY DOWNSIDE: they have a credit card minimum, so don't go in expecting to put a $2 coffee on your card. It ain't happenin. I eat here all the time because they make delicious Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins that are vegan and gluten free! I can't eat gluten, dairy or egg, so it's really hard to find baked goods I can eat. So my wedding came along and I realized I wasn't going to be able to eat my own wedding cake But then my mom thought to ask the owner of American Bulldog, Maleigha, who does all the baking, if she would be up for making my cake out of the pumpkin muffin mix. Maleigha said yes and it was a massive success!!! She make it as a rectangle and put a dark chocolate ganache on top! We added in the Bear cake toppers and a sprig of baby's breath. Everyone thought it was delicious and raved about it and friends with nut allergies could eat it too! I'm giving 2 stars because their iced matcha lattes are good (even tho you can buy the matcha at whole foods). I went today and I got a lemon cookie. I came home to eat it and I broke a piece off but it was struggling to come out. I looked closer and saw it was because there is a HAIR baked into the cookie I'm so grossed out and annoyed because this place is ridiculously expensive. I spent almost $18 on 3 items. Not sure if they have gluten free options, mainly because I don't care about the gluten free population. Want to hear a joke? Q: How can you tell if someone is gluten free? A: Talk to them for 2 seconds that they'll tell you! Okay, gluten free dissing aside, the place was great. It has an actual real fire place, plenty of seating and they guy who runs it and his wife and extremely friendly and engaging. It's decorated beautifully with shabby-chic furnishings and accoutrements. Comfortable and warm, it looks like the type of place I would find in Aspen, San Francisco or The West Village. The coffee here is pretty good here however I wanted to inquire into the fresh beans and was met with an arrogant attitude that belittled me into purchasing old beans. Does being less known make American Bulldog Coffee Roasters more hipster than the Ridgewood Coffee Company which is full of hipsters? I didn't see a bulldog when I visited, but the coffee was very good, and the food they have is organic. The menu board doesn't list much. You're not gonna find a nutella or black forest latte here. They do make foam art in your coffee though, which I love! It's a very large space for a coffee shop in Ridgewood, even bigger than the Starbucks. They don't have any couches or lounge chairs though, which they could definitely fit in there. Place was pretty empty in the afternoon, it would be a great place to sit down with a board game and have a few cups of coffee. But if the hours listed on yelp are accurate, it seems to close pretty early. read more

I really enjoy the Ridgewood location. It's been awhile but there used to be a American Bull Dog who would sometimes be there, would love to see more of that! The coffee is very good, the food is good but the prices are kind of ridiculously steep. I ordered a small caramel cappuccino and a banana walnut muffin and it was over $11.
